I was on a case where I had to pretend to be homeless because it was the most common thing to see in the specific area I needed access to. I also gained access to a high end hotel in the same outfit.

I’m considering a career as a private investigator and I really loved seeing this!! I was wondering if you had any tips for someone looking to get started in the business
Get car play, when you get a call your phone will take the call but the car dash will still show the map. And if you have a walking route you just exit the vehicle with your directions still plugged in and what I do is have my Apple Watch which will tap 2 times for a left and 3 for a right so o can keep my eyes on the subject while getting directions.

Good information. I just passed the Exam for the C license and I will be submitting my application using ~4 years of retail loss prevention experience. Not sure if I can start out part time in this field but I would like to slowly transition from my current job to fulltime Private investigator possibly within a year.

My family has been getting calls threatening a family members life. Cops say they can't do anything. What do you suggest? We already changed all our numbers. This person is using public domain and calling associated numbers. I'm broke so idk if paying for a PI is the way to go. What if they don't find anything either?

The first thing you need to do is learn all you can. Watch my other video about the books you need to read. Immerse yourself in the subject by subscribing to PI Magazine. Find an online learning/training course. I recommend piinstitute.com/ ...Kelly is one of the best in the business. If you're willing to make the financial and mental commitment you'll have no problem getting into the business.
Try to get a job as a surveillence investigator entry level. Work your way up 3 years and go take the PI test. Pretty straight forward I guess.

Thanks, Alex. Yeah, its really inexpensive business to get into. I can't speak for whatever state you're in, but in Massachusetts the original application fee for a license is $550 with a renewal fee of $150. Bonding is $50 a year, and I pay about $400 for liability insurance. So, just starting out you're in the hole for a grand. Then you factor in marketing costs, equipment, association memberships, training etc. But those costs can be mitigated for the business savvy entrepreneurs. I wish you luck, Alex!
I live in New York state my house was broken into and my dog was stolen , my house when then broken in second time , I have had multiple people profiles copying saying there stalking my ex girlfriends I have the proof of all this , on top of a dog attack on me as long with my house broken into.. now I was just in another incident were I was robbed in the new area I was living in made police indicdent report the police here have known here for 7 years now somebody has been doing something with on top of a profile threating me on Facebook that was military .. I had profiles claiming they were gonna shót Donald Trump also .. who would I contact in regards to all this to put it all together to find out who was behind this cause there also been stalking my girlfriends for long time now there is proof of all this .thank you

This is my dream job , I’ve been trying to study everything I need to know ...laws and ethics ...different techniques you use ...but I don’t really know if you have to go to college for this type of job . I was gonna go to the police academy and because a officer first and go from there ? Is that something that is possible
Of course, many PI's start in law enforcement then venture out on their own. Even though helpful, college is not a prerequisite to be a PI, most learn on their own. Check out local state associations for training. Some of the biggest are FALI and CALI.
I wanna become a PI how should I get started I’m 17 and just coming outta high school
PI requirements vary by state, but I’ll assume you have to be 18 in your state. I live in Virginia and the requirements here are be 18, and take a 60 hour course and pass the test at the end. The course is full of in classroom and in field skills and techniques. Look up if there if a department of criminal justice services in your state and also try and find a company who offers private investigator training. Should cost anywhere from $450-$650.
Oh and dude look into “Process Serving” in your state and the requirements. It’s an easy, simple way to learn how the system works and make a couple bucks and also make connections

How much do you charge for this type of case
I guess it depends on several factors. For example, if its a client that shoots me regular work I'd offer a discount, or a bundle rate. Otherwise, I'd offer a flat rate (depending on what's involved) or an hourly rate. The median rate for a private client in Massachusetts is about $125 and hour. The top rate for public defender cases (through CPCS) is about $50 an hour. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching.
Just curious as to why the client hired you to take some pics of the injury scene? Isn’t this something they or an acquaintance could have accomplished? TIA
Yes, but its always better for an unbiased, third party to do that in the event it goes to trial. Then, the attorney would call me in to testify as to what I saw in terms of elevation, defects, etc. Very reasonable question, thanks!

I guess it depends. There are many different techniques to find people, I guess it all depends on what information you have to start with. I'd interview family/friends first, and then follow leads from there. If I believe the person was in an institution, I may do a site visit and ask around. There's no database that'll tell you that and most health professionals will not tell you due to HPPA laws. I've had cases where I was hired to find homeless people and I usually start at the shelters. In Massachusetts it gets cold in the winter, so most will stop off at a shelter even if its for one night. And many people in the homeless community know each other and may be tempted with cash to provide any information. Hope this helps.

Very interesting work and very informative! I have one question, when PI do get permission to record and gather information. Can that be used in the court of law?
Yes and no...I know, you were anticipating that answer! But in reality it really depends on the type of information that was obtained. For example, some states allow you to record a conversation as long as one person consents. This is not the case in Massachusetts...under no circumstances can you record someone's voice without their knowledge. This law has become blurred the last couple of years as recording cell phones has become much more commonplace. However, anything legally obtained by a 3rd party (such as a private investigator) would probably be admissible in court. But I'm no lawyer!

Yes it Varys by state law, this is usually called the “One Party Consent Rule” just use those keywords to look it up in your state
I work in Florida which is a two party consent state but that means it is an every party consent. However, it is situational. If you walk up to a person(s), even out doors, and have a conversation, and record it, that is pretty much illegal. On the other hand if you are camped out in the driveway of an unoccupied house next to the house of your subject, and said subject has a loud argument with his girlfriend or other in his driveway, and you can hear it, neither of them have an expectation of privacy, so can be recorded. Same for a rally or riot. If the subject is outdoors with a megaphone or just yelling, he or she can be recorded. In most states the underlying rule is whether or not the recordee has an expectation or not of privacy. Same applies to video and photography. If you are out in public, you are fair game in almost every circumstance.

After using the bug detector, when a microphone is detected, what actions are taken on your end?
Easy answer: whatever the client wants! Hard answer: depending on where the camera or electronic device is found, I would document the hell out of it...pics and report...and then remove it. Most times they're located in an easily accessed location like a heat vent or counter top. Most devices are untraceable, meaning there is no way to trace the item back to the person who placed it there...however the client usually knows, otherwise they wouldn't have hired me. Hi Dan, no...you do not have to be licensed to work for a licensed firm. In fact, the licensing requirements in Mass require you to work under another PI in order to apply for your own. Unfortunately, I'm not actually hiring right not. What happened is websites like Indeed crawl other sites and post listings based upon their “now hiring” pages. I had a job listing on my site so they copied it and created the listing. I have not posted to that job on any recruiting site, that’s why it links you to my website as opposed to applying right from Indeed’s site. But thanks for watching, keep in touch!

Using an electronic device to track could be illegal...depending on the state. Conducting surveillance is not illegal unless the subject being followed has a restraining order against the client...which could happen!

Usually classes cost about $450-$650. Be ready to pay that. Just look up private investigator training in your area. As well as try and find your states department of criminal Justice services and that’s how you get your registration or license. Honestly you don’t need a lot of money getting started, use your phone voice memos app for voice recording, buy a spy pen on Amazon for $30 and you’re all set.

Question: if someone asks what you are doing there, what do you tell them?
Great question. I usually have a story ready to go. Usually I look at the area on Google Earth and find a utility or commercial establishment and make my excuse relate to that. For example, if I'm in a strip mall or something I'd say I was waiting for my wife to finish in XYZ store. Residential neighborhoods are a little tricky. One of my surveillance vehicles was a white pickup and I would through a ladder in the back and some empty paint cans and say I was marketing my painting business and provide my fake business cards. You never want to specifically identify a neighbor who you're doing work for. With cell phones they'll call the neighbor and you're busted. If I'm just in my charger and I see someone approaching my window I'll get on my phone and pretend to be in a conversation. That usually keeps the nosey neighbors' questions to a minimum. But get creative. NEVER say you're a government employee or official. That's a recipe for disaster. ALWAYS check in with the local police before setting up a stationary post. That shows good faith and maybe the cops won't respond if they get a call (but sometimes they do anyway). Thanks for watching!

I have a question can a Private investigator work with a non law enforcement group or is that illegal? Also how can a PI arrest someone? Would you need to contact somone eles to do that or can you normally just arrest someone. (Sorry if this doesn't make any sense I'm a 16 year old girl who plans on being a Private investigator)
You cannot arrest anybody. A p.i. is a regular citizen with no powers of arrest. We have no more authority than any citizen.

How do I become a PI in the USA if I am not a US citizen?
Depends on the licensing agency...I don't think many of them check your legal status, but I do not know. My guess is you'd have to have government issued documents (identification, passport etc.) to prove who you are.
Hey I’m 16 about to be 17 and am trying to find a good career. Should I go to be a PI or go into a different law enforcement path such as GBI (for Georgia).
Hey Hunter...it all depends on what you want to do. My suggestion is learn as much as you can about each career by reading, watching videos and talking to those in the profession. Don't forget, you can always change...nothing is permanent. When I was your age, I wanted to be a cop. I loved the uniforms, the discipline, the chase etc. Eventually I did it, enjoyed it and then recognized when it was time to move on. Have no regrets when it comes to your career. Good luck!
I have been a p.i. in Florida for 29 years. My advice after doing this for 29 years? Definitely go the law enforcement route. P.i. is an underpaid profession unless you own your own agency with good steady clients. If you plan on working for a company dont expect to ever earn more thsn 25.00 per hour. At lesst here in Fl. I own my own small agency so I do pretty good. But you have to be a salesman and go out there and market and set appointments to speak to people in i surance companies, law firms etc. And these people get msrketed all the time by numerous companies. The job is not nearly as glamorous as it seems. Lots of 430 or 5a.m. wake ups. Lots of weekends working, no access to a toilet, some elements of danger, boredom. Trust me. It is not a glamorous job. If you go into law enforcement you will have great benefits, good pay and s huge pension at tbe end. You can retire very comfortably. Take tbe advice of a guy whose been doing this almost 30 years. Go into law enforcement.
