- Ever thought about the fact that the most downloaded levels in Geometry Dash have over 40 million downloads? I try not to think about it. Anyways in this video I give my thoughts on GD's most popular levels and discuss how well they hold up.

Correction: It appears that *Promises WAS highlighted in Geometry Dash World!* Along with checking the current list, I watched a bunch of old GD World playthroughs to see if the level was anywhere to be found - but didn't find anything. Feel a little guilty for saying false info in the video now but oh well, I tried my best. (thank you for correcting me!)
Also, sorry that some of the clips have small but noticeable lag spikes in them, it happend with all the clips I recorded while having a bunch of other windows (such as my editor) open. Didn't realize until after rendering and I didn't wanna rerecord dozens of clips. Not the worst thing in the world thankfully

14:28 "The nice part about Bloodbath being a 1.9 level is that it's very easy to make out the gameplay" This is like, the main reason I fell out with this game after 2.0 came out. Everyone became absolutely obsessed with out-doing each other with flashy visuals and effects, so much that level design suffered greatly, on top of moving object abuse making levels nigh impossible to sightread. 1.9 and 2.0 hardly feel like the same game in my mind.

On god. And I'm gonna say with 100% certainty that sightreading's gonna be dead post-2.2. It's all memory from here (even though old Insane/Demon levels rely on memory, at least you can still tell what's going on in them). This is why I strongly support creators putting jump indicators in any level below medium demon, since easy stuff are supposed to be accessible for most newcomers (excluding people with epilepsy or eye problems)
Yup, I agree. They're pretty much different games. When I want to have fun, I go back to pre-2.0 levels because they feel like the last levels to still follow some rules.
Yeah, I was trying to play a newer demon and I was getting genuinely overstimulated because of how many bright flashes.

5:15 as someone who had the experience of beating The Nightmare, I can confidently say that no, the nightmare doesn't set a terrible impression for demon levels. It shows demon levels as more of a challenge than something for the top 0.01%. New players coming along and seeing bloodbath is much less likely to result in a group of new players open to harder levels, than new players coming along and seeing the Nightmare.
First of all, the difficulty of a demon should stay consistent. The nightmare is easier than Clutterfunk. When someone has 2 demons, immediately you think "Are they actually good enough to beat Clubstep, or is it just the Nightmare and the Lightning Road?" It's not the difference between The Nightmare and Bloodbath, it's the difference between The Nightmare and almost any other demon.
And that wasn't even the main gripe Colon had with it. His main point was that the gameplay sucks, which I mostly agree with. I think he's overexaggerating how bad the design is (it's not great, not terrible) but I agree that the gameplay isn't good.
Every time I check someone's profile who has won 1-2 demons, I can guarantee you it's either The Nightmare or The Lightning Road. That makes it a terrible impression for demons, especially for online levels, imo.
@@brokenbacon8233 I agree that it does set a slightly worse perceived worthiness of having beaten demon levels (which is really just a complicated way of saying that bragging about having beaten a demon level is meaningless), but the video was talking almost exclusively about the playing perspective, and in that aspect, it's pretty okay.

If only there was a demon difficulty system to differentiate the difficulty of The Nightmare and Bloodbath, that is displayed right on the level page of demon levels for new players to see, and has The Nightmare and Bloodbath on complete opposite ends of the scale
Fun fact: Acid Factory probably has a lot of plays because it used to be inside the gd world servers before they got updated.

12:26 Bloodbath is SOOOO popular that even when looking up the death metal band of the same name (one of the most famous death metal bands that's a supergroup containing members from many other extremely popular death metal bands and having made Eaten, one of the most iconic death metal songs of all time), it STILL gets drowned out by GD. Everytime I look up one of their songs, I ALWAYS see a video of the level in the search results lol
I wouldn't really say it drowns it out, as it only pops up about once every ten results on google images. But yeah it's *that* iconic, arguably just as much as stereo madness

I think the only reason I enjoyed the nightmare was because of the lightning road
In the ball parts , you just go up and down.
In the ship parts ,you just go up and down.
In the cube parts you just jump and fall without much else going on.

You go up and down, tap this and then this, beat bloodbath but squeezed in a 10 second mark, and finally beat retray

The Nightmare is so popular because it's the first weekly, hence it's the weekly that appears when you have never beat that one or never clicked the X.
It was already popular before 2.11 though, which introduced the weekly demons

I think that The Nightmare holds a special place in many people’s hearts. For many (including myself), it was the very first demon they ever beat. We all know it sucks (I mean, just look at it). But for me at least, it marks a turning point in my experience with the game.
I once beat Bloodbath in practice, while on mobile, while I was still pretty new to the game. That was the best moment of my life. I'm not joking.

Great video! Extremely high quality, as always. However, I think that there's another problem with Acid Factory you didn't talk about, which is the Silver Coin placement. As a colorblind person it was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to spot them, even at full brightness and LDM; they are just hidden by shadows and I could just not distinguish them from the background.
i doubt anyone that heard "not as bad as generation retro" was expecting colon to make a whole video about it a year and a half later
my only real problem with dark paradise is that I always mistake those spinny things in the ship section for sawblades, and then end up killing myself trying to avoid them.
Whenever I feel like I can't create levels worth a damn I take solace in knowing that at least I couldn't possibly do any worse than Generation Retro

The thing with "The Nightmare" is it works as a gateway for more confidence if its your first demon. I wasnt the best at geometry dash but when I first beat the nightmare I got really motivated to improve and felt better in my skill cause the level is rated demon.
I’m gonna be straight. A lot of the level decoration 2.1 and beyond is kinda lame. Pre 2.1 had a lot of simpler level designs but I feel like they were more creative. A lot of levels post 2.1 are just a lot of flashy lights and overly complicated designs.
I swear to god I see a 2.1 level and think "WAIT THAT WAS NOT A WALL?!" or "WAIT THERE WAS A SPIKE THERE?!" every goddamn second

8:05 Promises used to be in GD World but I think it got removed when the game got updated
14:08 for those who dont know, heres a full story 😊:
It All Started When Ggboy made cataclysm and everyone thought it was the hardest level in the game, until 3 players verified it, notably, Cyclic, Giron David, and of course, Riot. In that order they all beat cataclysm with cyclic being the first to "Beat" it, after beating cataclysm, riot attempted icdx and he also beat it. Riot went on to make bloodbath. shortly after bloodbath was verified. Cyclic Made Sonic Wave, Blood Bath was made to one up Cataclysm, In the same way, Sonic wave was made to one up Bloodbath. Sonic Wave got a number of updates, 1st Update made the level a brighter blue, 2nd Update Buffed It And Made The Blues Darker, But In The 3rd Update, All Of Sonic Wave Was Deleted and Turned into a level full of random blocks and spikes.
And then one day, Riot got a chat in his skype, It Was From Cyclic. He Revealed How All His Streams Were Prerecorded and Spliced. He Also revealed how he Hacked cataclysm to verify it and sonic wave was also hacked to verify😢.
After This Shocking Revelation, 3 Players went on to beat the legendary sonic wave, Mefewe, Sunix And of course, Riot. Sunix Later went on to beat sonic wave, and also this means that giron david was the first to beat cataclysm after revealing that cyclic cheated it, imagine thinking you got 2nd place in the hardest level of the game, but later to find out that you were actually first, i imagine it must have a very bittersweet taste to it.

I think of HOW, the 3d level. I also think of Hyphen, because of the following orb mechanic. I believe it was made by this creator himself, but that's not why I put it there. I really like how the orbs follow you around and place themselves, severely reducing object count.

did you notice in every geometry dash update trailer they use the icon that is unlocked when you complete the level shown in the video this happened for the fingerdash and dead locked update and many more!

In my eyes, the map packs are a museum of old levels and some other random levels.
I remember playing a 2* level that was fully auto, just with one easy jump in 1.5 minutes
2:52 not sure whether it's a pun or something, but that little joke on Terraria's Fire Gauntlet accessory really made me smile a bit because Terraria doesn't get enough recognition. Sure, if you show the game to someone they will say "oh that's terraria", but not because the game is played a lot, but because it's considered a "shameless Minecraft 2d rip-off"
Which is funny because geometry dash (at least the 1.0 version) was more of a shameless ripoff of The Impossible Game than Terraria was of Minecraft.
Also, I remember Terraria had a big popularity spike at the beginning, which is probably why everyone knows it, and also why people think it’s a Minecraft ripoff. They probably played it a bit during the popularity spike, then they forgot the gameplay but not the style.

I have always....AND LET ME TELL YOU, ALWAYS thought that sonar could be the first level of "adventure 2" where all levels follow the theme of sonar, same feel as the normal level+ new music and being a bit harder

Promises was the first level I ever beat. I remember at one point it was very popular on Geometry Dash World. To this day, I go back to it and just play through for the fun. Plus, Promises by Kabuki is just a great song for a level.
This video got me to beat the decode wave section. Starting to get into GD even if I’m just on mobile.
When i first installed gd world back in 2017, i was completely clueless about gd and it's deeper community-side universe etc. however i strongly remember that promises by adiale WAS indeed in the featured tab there. don't have any proof, but the level really stuck out to me.

I remember playing this back since late 2013 (the year it was released) and seeing how simple level design became something beautiful (somewhat authentic) and was generally just fun to play, it was a blast growing up with this game it was quite fun.

(This isn't a correction, just wanna say something) Promises was on the gd world featured list, the first level too. I saw it when trying out online levels for the first time on GD World when I was MUCH younger. It's the first ever online custom level I ever beat and will never forget it.
3:57 Level Easy is NOT a 1.0 Level. It is most likely in 1.2/1.3. This is because the ID is larger than (1.2 lvl example) Demon Park and it is in 1.2. So therefore it is During or After 1.2

I think if I were to make a "Most Downloaded" tab in any sort of custom level game, I'd exclude the number of downloads a level gets from said "Most Downloaded" tab, and only count the downloads that are gained elsewhere. That way, the list has the chance to update/constantly change! :)
I think a good way to make good levels show up would be a combination of factors like how many people actually completed the level, as well as a ratio between how many comments the level has vs the amount of likes.
What makes most downloaded bad is that you dont have to ever play the level to make it get more downloads. Literally going to the levels main screen, without even having to look at comments, gives the level a download and if youre like most people, if you see a bunch kf negative comments on a level and decide you dont want to play it afterall, most people dont click the delete level button to undownload it.
I actually really like the nightmare minus the pointless portal and ring spam as decoration. It’s a nice intro to the harder levels in the game and it actually plays really well imo
