You asked for theories, so here’s mine: The red and blue aliens are brothers, and the blue one was always the better kid and their parents’ favorite. As expected, the red alien was jealous, so he kidnapped his own brother and brought him to his own part of the galaxy. The green aliens are his workers and are supposed to make sure the blue alien never escapes. He allows visitors so nobody is suspicious of him hiding something. That’s why he was all nice at the beginning of the level. But when the key is collected, it opens up the area where the blue alien was trapped. That’s why the red alien says “NOOO!!!” The red alien begins to search for the blue alien, and sends his highest ranked worker, the other red alien in the first boss fight, to take care of you. The blue alien knows that you’re in trouble, so he goes to save you. After the first boss is defeated, the red alien decides that he needs to take care of you first. That leads to the “level final.” The red alien then destroys the blue alien, which leads to you getting revenge for him once and for all, as you blast the red alien. I really just spent ten minutes of my life writing a story on a RUclips comment. Welp
I think the issue with Scarlet Surge is that if you can't beat it in your first few attempts, it just becomes tedious. Crashing in the last 25% makes you REALLY not feel like playing the entire damn thing again.
I feel like if Generation Retro was made today and polished up a bit, it could genuinely be a really awesome level. In my opinion, some of the concepts are really unique but I feel like the creator couldn’t really establish them properly because of the time period the level was made in.
2 more things about this level Colon didn't point out: 1. The alien that kills you in the ball part is actually using fading spikes and is slightly visible. 2. The bullets in the first UFO part are visible all the time and the boss doesn't spawn it.
I have a feeling that “You are not win” was inspired by grammatically incorrect phrases from older games, e.g. the iconic “All your base are belong to us” from Zero Wing’s opening cutscene.
@@SaItogaming202 yes I did, it simply doesn't make sense because being myself latin-american I dont see whats wrong with that line I mean, it would roll of the tongue much better something like "All your base now belongs to us" but my point still stands, it looks like an honest mistake rather than a reference. Greeting from Perú!!!
15:59 Plus, the bullet that the red alien shoots out is just THERE, not the red alien shooting it. It kinda gets blocked by the red alien and moved really quickly to make it look like it’s being shot out. Like… why???
10:43 I theorize that perhaps maybe the reason the alien yells "NO!" is that the blind jump just before is actually a trap set up by him, and he is actually upset that you survived his trap
Oh that makes a lot of sense at first I thought that he welcomed the player at first because he didn’t expect the player to get to far but ur theory makes more sense 👍
5:02 just goes to show how far colon goes for good content. Being held hostage and being forced to play generation retro takes some serious guts. Hope you’re ok, Colon

4:44 "The level has a lot of flashing lights making it a potential nightmare for photosensitive players, so picking it for the most important gauntlet in the game is extremely inconsiderate on RobTop's end." Ever heard of Electrodynamix?
Also GD in general is not very friendly to players with these problems because there are just so many levels like that (and like you said, also electrodynamix). There should be a warning that people need to put when publishing a level for it to get rated.
Theory: I think the reason why the alien says “NO” after he welcomes you is because he wanted you to have died by now. He welcomed you because this was supposed to be a death trap, but when it became unsuccessful, he got angry. Maybe that can also explain the gameplay at the start. What are your thoughts?
I think that the alien is mad that you're completing the level, being fully aware that the player will exit once the level was finished, so it tries to make you have not win so you start all over again, hence the bossfight.
11:23 colon, it’s a coin texture. Viewable at the end of the level where the boss fight shoots a big wall of pellets, the coin texture is there, where the only easy pathway is. So that isn’t a cult symbol or eyeball, but it’s a used coin texture.
I think the eyeball thing at 11:15 was an early version of the custom coins seen later in the level. The part that disappears looks kind of like a coin, and the disappearing could be the coin getting collected. My guess is it wasn’t clear enough what it was, so the creator switched to the newer version later on.
The major issue is the quality control behind what levels are picked for the gauntlets. I remember the first Fire gauntlet level having a coin with the text “ViPriN iS tRigGerEd”. A blatant community inside joke in a level hand picked to be in an official piece of content shows how poorly gauntlets are managed as a whole.
@@decastar2819 during 2.0, Viprin would often rate the coins of the levels he reviews. A low rated coin, for example, would be the most blatantly obvious coin that's effortless to get. Viprin would be especially critical on these ratings, leading to jokes about easy coins triggering him
Probably a really unpopular opinion but Generation Retro is one of my favorite levels that’s been put into a gauntlet; however, I’m in the same boat of the “why is this even in a gauntlet”. The level has so much more character and charm then the majority of levels in the gauntlets and I found the gameplay to be really fun! Yeah there’s a couple of iffy parts but compared to other gauntlet levels it’s not bad at all. Or even compared to other levels in the game for that matter. This is extremely biased as Generation Retro was one of the few gauntlet levels I first beat back in the day on an Amazon Kindle with less than 20 attempts (at the time Fire Aura for example took like 170). Really good level, with pretty readable gameplay for its release imo.
I AGREE!! I poke a lot of fun at the level but I also really adore the unique theming of it (even if it's poorly done), it's just the gauntlet that ruins it for me (and everyone)
My theory for the pixel block things: The creator thought that you couldnt scale pixel blocks and decided to use the 3D tile instead because it was larger and "fit" better.
what if generation retro is in the piuson gauntlet because someone went back in time to tell rob to not do that, and he did it anyways for laughs and now he forgot about it
6:21 You know, if you think about it, the green orb has technically existed since the game was first released, as creators could have easily created the mechanic by combining a yellow orb with a gravity portal, which was done very often in pre-2.0 levels. Therefore, Arathhsa could have started building the level in 1.9, but that first click would have initially been a yellow orb combined with a gravity portal, and then they changed it to a regular green orb after 2.0 came out.
My personal theory is that the designs were just copied from some random 1.9 level. Since the creator was also likely very young, I can imagine this to be possible. This also ties into the fact that custom objects were new in 2.0.
I see it but the majority of the level uses 2.0 items like the move trigger included in the entire bossfight, the text, the coins, the key, clouds, and the moving decorations like the swirl. So with all these factors, it’s most likely a level in 2.0 unless it was a half made layout in 1.9 before 2.0
One thing I really appreciate about Gen Retro being in the gauntlets is that there's no chance in hell it would've gotten so popular otherwise. Even if the execution is pretty bad, I'm really glad to see people talking about how genuinely creative and interesting it is for a starting creator. This level has ideas and a "story" (even if simple) and creative applications of the retro theme (mainly by incorporating it into the gameplay). And as frustrating as it might be to play, it puts creativity over quality, which is something that starting creators should learn is completely okay. During an era where super high quality levels are everywhere and people are always comparing their works to better levels and losing motivation through that, Gen Retro is proof that a level can still offer so much even if it's crudely made, and those are the kinds of levels that creators should be comparing their own levels to: not to compare quality, but for pure inspiration. So, honestly, I'm really happy this level is in the gauntlet for that reason.
11:24 my theory is that its an eyeball watching us complete the level and complete the gauntlet but the eye actually moves on to other gauntlets as u beat the poison one.
The reason why the object count at the end is inaccurate is because since the text uses small pixel blocks, the creator looked at the object count before making the text and put the previous object count into the level, taking up a lot of objects. If he used normal text, he could just look at the object count, put it onto the text, and change the text by 1 to make it accurate.
I actually found a skip in that level. There is a well-known robot glitch where if you click right before you hit a jump pad, you’ll go much higher. If you do this in the transition to the wave, and do some precise jumps to get over some slopes, you’ll be underneath the wave part. If you keep going there is a green monster that the creator placed with this exact scenario in mind, but you can just jump over it! Keep going, there’s a random red alien on the floor around halfway but he won’t hurt you, wait some more, and you’ll be able to skip the entire level! You’re welcome, Cologne.
You can also go back onto the level, because some of the slopes hitboxes extend just slightly too far. However, I'm pretty sure that's a RobTop issue & not an ArathhSA issue.
Here's my theory: The first boss is the intentional boss for the level and the second one is a virus who breached the level like the one they were talking about in the wave part (I think the virus's intention is making the level last longer)
This wouldn't make much sense, as your supposed "virus" boss appears at the start and welcomes you to the level, way before the "virus" was detected. Otherwise, a very captivating theory!
For me it’s Fire Aura for being so inconsistent with difficulty & super frustrating to grind out for less experienced players. It’s like throwing the first Deadlocked Wave in the middle of Jumper
I honestly really like Fire Aura because I enjoy fast paced wave sections, but I can agree that it's a little extreme for the lava gauntlet and it shouldn't have been rated a 7 star.
I agree with the comment above me, fire aura is a pretty good level, but the only problem is, is that the first cube should be in a five star, and there’s other parts that i wouldn’t complain if they were in a easy demon. Fire aura is really cool, but it doesn’t have balancing.
This isn't the worst Gauntlet level mostly because of the broken English dialogue. When I was beating this level I was laughing out loud the whole time reading "JAJAJAJA! YOU HAVE NOT WIN! YOU... DIED!!!"
Haha, the broken English dialogue adds a special touch! 'JAJAJAJA! YOU HAVE NOT WIN! YOU... DIED!!!' - Classic. Laughter is the best way to survive challenging levels! 😂🎮
11:20 I think this is the creator's attempt to make a "pixel art coin" but probably scrapped it. It disappears after you pass it apparently (like the key)
It disappeared because it's not linked to any group ID, but it's color is. It's you see, as he moves to the right, it disappears because Color ID 220 and 221 I think change to black, which is why we don't see it.
The "scary eyeball thing" is most probably just an abandoned custom art for the coin, which explains it's disappearance after you go past it. And it's a pretty decent thing to cling on to, just like Devil Vortex saws, they were styled just for Devil Vortex and were used in the actual level, but the creator forgot about deleting them afterwards. I think this comment is too long.
Great observation! The 'scary eyeball thing' might indeed be an abandoned custom art for the coin. Those leftover details like Devil Vortex saws add a unique charm. Short and sweet insights! 🎮👀
@RomanianMapper12 For your information, my comment was 67 words long, meaning that no matter how fast you read, it still counts as long. Even though, glad to hear that!
I just realized that it's actually a really good thing to cling onto, because the level feels like an unfinished preview, because it (the texture) wasn't even deleted or moved in the right place, and there were probably more of such unfinished assets that weren't deleted

I remember when I first played generation retro, I thought it was pretty cool. I guess new players don't really think about if the level the gauntlet throws at you is unfair, I mean after seeing the map packs this would look like straight fire for a newbie 🔥 In hindsight, though, I completely agree with everything you said about this level, but only an experienced player would be able to point out those flaws.
Totally get that! For new players, Generation Retro can be like a fiery initiation. It's only with experience that we start noticing the flaws. Hindsight, the ultimate game guru! 🔥🎮
So I just played through generation retro (traumatising, i know) after watching and the biggest thing that threw me off was actually the blue pad at the start of the ball part. I kept tapping to make the first input, which made me immediately launch off of the first platform and into the spikes. Also it's more than possible to skip the wave portal and enter the wave part as the robot.
So far, from what I could say about this is: - There are certainly worse levels out there, but this one's forced. You can blame the creator for inconsistency, but it's up to the players on whether or not they shall play it. At least the creator made an effort to at least appeal to the kids, knowing that this game's made for kids. Wonder why RobTop forced us to finish this is a mystery you could think about. Maybe ask him? - This isn't the worst level. To me, it's just what basically RobTop does- it's to challenge players. It's neat to see a 27 minute critique of the level, but if you think about it: is that necessary? Maybe yes, because it's the worst gauntlet level ever, but it's still better than 50% of the more recent levels in the magic tab. - Probably the reason why the pixel art was inconsistent was that it was made in 1.9 but was updated to 2.0 shortly upon the making of this level. - Awkward mechanics in this level are expected, considering the creator wasn't that much experienced or didn't know much about play testing(it's probably made by a middle schooler bro). It was made for fun anyways. Same goes for the triggers, placement and stuff.
I think the "eyeball" art hidden in the level was meant to be an attempt at recreating the decorative saws -- my theory is that the creator scrapped doing that when they realized that there was no way to rotate objects due to the level being made in 2.0 instead of 2.1 (ie. no rotate trigger, so no way to make the decoration look like a pixelated version of what it was supposed to be)
You could've done rotation in 2.0 using toggle triggers or 0 second alpha triggers plus multiple rotated versions of the same texture, plus it would've had the pixely rotation that *CLEARLY* would've gone very well with the style of the level. Too bad it's too much effort for a Spanish kid who can't even use pixel blocks properly.....
13:42 *GD Colon:* An Easy 2 Star Level that suddenly turns into an Extreme at the very end is unfair. *Basically every "Full Version" of a RobTop official level:* _intense sweating_
I have a theory about the aliens using the 3d blocks. It's that whoever made the level couldn't make the art themselves, so they copied a level with the aliens in it and used custom objects to put it in their level.
i feel like generation retro stands as an example that anyone who can make levels that don't look like an eyesore has a chance at getting their levels featured in gd
Never knew I needed 27 minutes of colon ranting about generation retro but here we are, I think you spoke for everyone who played this level after unlocking it in the poison gauntlet for the first time 10/10 no time wasted

My theory is that the "eyeball" was a test design for the coin that he was too lazy to get rid of, and the one without the coin is just a copy + pasteable deco design that yet again, was too lazy to get rid of.
The level was probably made in late 1.9 and rushed to completion in 2.0, you can see some fade ins that look like they come from 1.9 (ball part) and the only pixel arts made with real pixel blocks are 2.0 features (key, custom coin)
Parts where i mostly died while playing the level for the first time are -That stupid "moving platform that pops out of nowhere" -That dam triple medium spike that comes right after the custom teleport portal -That horrendous introduction into that terrifying ball part (I thought you were supposed to switch gravity bc I had no idea there was a blue pad) -The evil virus guy in the ball part because the arrow indication is way to late making you either think its for after the space invaders dude or just not see it at all -The devious ground spikes after the first dialog with evil boi -Yeah I barely died to the boss fight other than that bc you can just keep down where the coin is -Except for in the second phase where he suddenly makes you do real gameplay (yay) also i thought that the shield was a portal and the arrow was just too small to even see
i honestly like it when the vid is over 20 minutes. and, take your time on these videos, they are 100% worth watching when im bored, or when im not. thanks for making these
19:13 I actually got a good idea watching this. It’s like a complex bossfight but at some point a wall of spikes is chasing you and you have to go through speed portals to survive. You get slowed down periodically.
Okay, here's my theory for the complete Generation Retro story and lore. I think first, the red space invader is trying to welcome you to grow your trust in him. But he's really only trying to get a virus installed on your computer. He suddenly says "NO!" near the beginning because he notices you're just getting through the level without caring about his virus or whatever. I think the virus/scam theory makes sense when you realize the "Insert Coin" really only means he's here for business. The wave portal represents eventually downloading the virus, with the wave specifically representing cryptocurrency graph, related to the point of this virus. But this virus actually has an emergency "antidote" or whatever to save your PC from the virus. It was used for testing the virus but was accidentally left in by the scammers. This antidote is Blue Space Invader. He helps you through the level. He starts deleting parts of the virus, which makes Red Space Invader glitch out, explaining his physical change, and him becoming spanish. But then disaster strikes. The blue space invader thinks he's done after attacking his red enemy, but in actuality, he just moved in another location where the antidote couldn't find him, so he could heal and come back full force. It took consiousness and erased the antidote tragically in a fierce battle but the antidote hinted at the location of the virus in his death, allowing you, the user, to erase it. The reason the player color changes is because the virus is making this level inconsistent, which flows as a thematic throughout the level. The final coin represents getting your money back a lawsuit later. Truly a fascinating story.
also, the offscreen thing looks like a coin but is a fake coin for a simple reason. It was supposed to be used by the red space invader to convince you that you can "win a million dollars without even breathing" if you click his link. Eventually it's offscreen because you're too dumb to even need a reason to click it so he doesn't use that motivation.
i feel so bad for the creator, they probably just liked 2.0 features and decided to make a level not even as bad as some early 2.0 levels, most likely without even aiming for it to be rated. and then robtop put it in the gauntlet for everyone to hate the poor kid who built the level

Theory: I think the reason why the alien says “NO” after he welcomes you is because he wanted you to have died by now.

We need this guy as a personal trainer. He could point out so many problems in the life editor.
I think the eyeball thing at 11:15 was an early version of the custom coins seen later in the level. The part that disappears looks kind of like a coin, and the disappearing could be the coin getting collected. My guess is it wasn’t clear enough what it was, so the creator switched to the newer version later on.
also there's an extra state that looks like the coin part is rotated 90 degrees
Or it's a autoing method like devil vortex saws
thats nice of them to do. wouldnt want to make the level un-sight-readable or anything.
Nice detective work! The disappearing eyeball might indeed be an early coin concept.
But why would he just leave it there🤔
The major issue is the quality control behind what levels are picked for the gauntlets. I remember the first Fire gauntlet level having a coin with the text “ViPriN iS tRigGerEd”. A blatant community inside joke in a level hand picked to be in an official piece of content shows how poorly gauntlets are managed as a whole.
Well atleast outer space has fun and interesting gameplay

Did viprin do anything wrong back then
@@decastar2819 during 2.0, Viprin would often rate the coins of the levels he reviews.

Not to mention, I'm pretty sure you can see 1.9 color triggers (the ones specifically for color channels 1-4) in the beginning.
@@TheChallengerB That's not too surprising since the level uses few colours anyway
My personal theory is that the designs were just copied from some random 1.9 level. Since the creator was also likely very young, I can imagine this to be possible. This also ties into the fact that custom objects were new in 2.0.
🤓
The Generation Retro segment was my favourite part of your gauntlet video.
But my levels look worse than generation retro what am i supposed to do then!

11:24 my theory is that its an eyeball watching us complete the level and complete the gauntlet but the eye actually moves on to other gauntlets as u beat the poison one.
So your saying that when you complete the Poison Gauntlet and move on to the Shadow Gauntlet, the eyeball moves to that Gauntlet!?
@@MarineMammals75yes (also clearly im joking, im making fun of the absurd theories in the comments lol)

11:20 I think this is the creator's attempt to make a "pixel art coin" but probably scrapped it. It disappears after you pass it apparently (like the key)
I thought it was a scrapped orb decoration
for a second i thought you were neiro
It disappeared because it's not linked to any group ID, but it's color is. It's you see, as he moves to the right, it disappears because Color ID 220 and 221 I think change to black, which is why we don't see it.
100th like :D
The "scary eyeball thing" is most probably just an abandoned custom art for the coin, which explains it's disappearance after you go past it. And it's a pretty decent thing to cling on to, just like Devil Vortex saws, they were styled just for Devil Vortex and were used in the actual level, but the creator forgot about deleting them afterwards. I think this comment is too long.
thats what i thought
Great observation! The 'scary eyeball thing' might indeed be an abandoned custom art for the coin. Those leftover details like Devil Vortex saws add a unique charm. Short and sweet insights! 🎮👀
I thought that too!

I guess new players don't really think about if the level the gauntlet throws at you is unfair, I mean after seeing the map packs this would look like straight fire for a newbie 🔥
In hindsight, though, I completely agree with everything you said about this level, but only an experienced player would be able to point out those flaws.
I finished the poison gauntlet all the way back in 2017, and even I remember this level being horrid.
@@pepearown4968 Well maybe you had played more /better custom levels than me, so you had higher standards to compare Generation retro against.

27 minutes for a video dedicated to a single level? That's some dedication
12:57 the alien was not moving like the others
So far, from what I could say about this is:
- There are certainly worse levels out there, but this one's forced.
We can also blame it for its existence
Personally, I’d say Fire Aura (lvl 4 of Lava Gauntlet) is way worse. The gameplay is just awful, especially the wave parts, and it’s also forced.

He's gonna go kill the creator and Robtop for this.
I think the "eyeball" art hidden in the level was meant to be an attempt at recreating the decorative saws -- my theory is that the creator scrapped doing that when they realized that there was no way to rotate objects due to the level being made in 2.0 instead of 2.1 (ie. no rotate trigger, so no way to make the decoration look like a pixelated version of what it was supposed to be)
my theory is that it's actually an unused version of the coins used in the level, but yours also makes some sense
It’s the decoration around the green orbs in that section.
You could've done rotation in 2.0 using toggle triggers or 0 second alpha triggers plus multiple rotated versions of the same texture, plus it would've had the pixely rotation that *CLEARLY* would've gone very well with the style of the level. Too bad it's too much effort for a Spanish kid who can't even use pixel blocks properly.....

i feel like generation retro stands as an example that anyone who can make levels that don't look like an eyesore has a chance at getting their levels featured in gd

How long did this take you?
i think bro saved it
23:23 “Actually you know what, yeah this alien would definitely du that.”
GD Cologne- and everyone, for that matter- will hate me, but I played Generation Retro outside of the poison gauntlet
That loud 'SHUT UP' destroyed my eardrums.
22:11 I love how GD Cologne* wrote an entire paragraph that only shows up for a split second

i feel so bad for the creator, they probably just liked 2.0 features and decided to make a level not even as bad as some early 2.0 levels, most likely without even aiming for it to be rated. and then robtop put it in the gauntlet for everyone to hate the poor kid who built the level
Robtop definitely takes part of the blame here
@@davinchristino Yes RobTop didn't choose the best level possible... But Colon chose to make this video
11:35 it's the "gun" in the bossfight
