My great grandfather did a lot of woodworking and made a trammel of archimedes where the moving pieces never extended beyond the frame. I played with that thing a lot as a kid
That's cool!

The Trammel of Archimedes is actually useful - you can use it to draw ellipses. We have one in the wood shop I work at. I didn't know that increasing the number of shuttles would increase the sharpness of the ellipse drawn, that's cool.
It is because it doesn't. In the two shuttle version, the distance from the shuttles to the tip is exactly the longest and shortest distances from the center of the elipse. Similar distances can be observed on the 5:shuttle version albeit not as direct, but importantly, the sharpness of the elipse is not due to the number of shuttles, but the relative position of the shuttles on the handle; in the 2 shuttle case: the further up the middle shuttle sits, the sharper the elipse.
3 years late to the party...
Oh my Lord, thank you SO much, you helped me solve a 14 year old riddle my 5th grade science teacher showed the class that nobody could solve, if I ever do meet Mr. Tyner again, I’ll tell him it’s a mirascope and get my $5
Mirascope: two parabolic mirrors create a 3D image above the actual object. The image is not a hologram and is produced solely by reflection off special concave mirrors.
For more details check out this link

Hope it will help you :)
6:01 Ah, I see. The illusion is not the object itself but the video of it taken from a carefully-chosen angle.
Yes it is the angle and the side shape. This arrow and the next are related in design

Great video and music fits it perfectly.
It has larger mass in the bottom
Like boxing baby toy
(I mean sand bag inflatable toy )
Yes but what you actually mean is it has a very low centre of gravity
To clarify even further, the center of mass is below the rim that would serve as a fulcrum point as you try to lay it flat
Muhamed Arbaz yeah i mean that too
What are you talking about?

9:11 call me crazy but... i think, there might be a small chance that it could have a weight on the bottom, maybe. 🤷♀️ idk

that reflective wind spinner was dope..
Each toy is really amazing and illustrates some fantastic physics and 3D geometry. Love the way the 2 parabolic mirrors still work when you shine the laser! Fundemental physical laws seem just as amazing. Really stunning. Thanks.
My two grown-up kids are 24 and 21 so I'm a bit old for toys.
Now, where's my credit card?

Guesses to the riddle.
1) There can be a heavy mass exactly at the centre of the base.
2) There can be a magnet stuck at the base and you have another magnet below the table (less likely possibility)

Wow, I realize that I am older than dirt, but has nobody ever heard of a WEEBLE???? "Weebles wobble but they don't fall down..."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weeble
no but they still hurt if you tread on them thou ,lol
I HAVE the commercials were cool
They made great weapons, you'll never forget being hit by a flying Weeble. Weebles were not the first application of this principle, there were toys on sale in the 40's and 50's to put in your pet Budgerigars cage. They were made in the shape of a Budgie and the birds would sit for hours having a fight with it.
Now I feel old because I grew up with them and I am only 19 about to be 20 in 6 months.
@isaiahut24 But the can is tapered and thus the same principle applies with the exception the weeble wobble had allot less upper mass per volume of air compared to the can which made it so that as long as there was the tiniest motion the unspent kinetic energy of of the weighted bottom held aloft would move the weeble wobble toward the gravitational center from the conical point of the weeble. The curved taper area is key as the weeble weight was slightly above the actual bottom which cause the rounded placing to be the center of gravity just below the curve, as the weighted end is made flatter toward the earth as the mass entirety moves toward the moving gravitational center. Both are doing the same.
Great fun! I wonder if that spinner could be used as a bird scarer if you grow fruit in the garden!
By placing a weight in the bottom, you lower the center of mass and center of gravity, which means that if the center of mass is on the opposite side of the focal poit as the direction is leaning, the object will return to it's standing position.
I just selected Physics and Maths as me pre-classes,
Wasn't disappointed at all! 😂
CMYK Coasters are absolutely WONDERFUL for anyone with experience in the printing industry. Otherwise, "Huh? Duh?"

Re Trammel of Archimedes: years ago I worked for a UK sculptor named Alan Boyson, and in 1974 he brought something like this into the studio calling it a’Bullshit Grinder’ It had been made by somebody unknown. We both thought it was very apt and funny.
Just loved the reflective wind spinner...❤
Wow....😨😱😱😱 It's so freakin amazing ,the right pointing arrow was damn confusion....now I am confirmed that physics is also creative
The right pointing arrow is not physics, it's phenomenon is based in our visual interpretations.
This happens because the mass is more concentrated(placed/pasted/fixed) at the centre of the bottom surface which makes it to come back in its initial position whenever it is tilted.
Thank you for the kewl visuals, very satisfying.
The 5 shuttle Archimedes trail is an example of how a radial aircraft engine works.
No. Not at all. The pistons don't travel over center in the engine and the crank and rod assembly (by itself, nevermind the master and slave arrangement in a radial engine) has different kinematics than this one. This is more like a ring and planet (or internal gear) arrangement. The rotor maintains point to point contact with the stationary base around the periphery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicyclic_gearing
the shuttle reminded me of engines
The lever on top of the trammel of archimedes describes a perfect ellipse
Yes, indeed, but what about the 5 shuttle one? I'd like to see it in action with a pencil, tracing on paper...
@@saveriog.825 Just trace where the central axis of the turning rod is.
The center of gravity was really close to the bottom. The edge of the bottom acts as a fulcrum for a sort of lever. With the center of gravity on the side of the bottom, it will tip to stand up.
The extra weight in the bottom of the can pulls it back level
Well, I can't complain, some of these are pretty mind tricking, but I do know the secret of the bank.
Actually, TheActionLab proved that it is not cetrifugal force but atmosferic pressure that pushes the water in the center down.
Inside a vacuum a spinning liquid doesn't rise on the sides.
Anyway, the video looks really great and the spin cam looks even better!

The answer to your can example is a fairly easy one. Aluminum, which the cab is made of, is a very soft and not dense at all. Obviously the can is empty, and that's what makes this so easy. There is a washer, either carbon steel or stainless steel, which cut into perfect circle that almost perfectly fits into the bottom concave party of the can. Stainless/carbon steel are substantially more dense than aluminum and the weight of the washer is perfectly distributed at the very bottom of the can, which in turn keeps the can from tipping over.
8:25 The liquid stacks highest farther from the center for the same reason why you should put songs that have a lot of sizzly high frequencies near the edge of the LP record. Further from the center of a rotating circle, there is more speed meaning the centrifugal force will act on the water more over there. For the record the amount of vinyl traveling under the needle's contact point is greater for the same amount of time when the needle is near the edge of the record.
My inner geek is grinning like an idiot. I enjoyed this video way too much 😊
I am indian .....I love ur channel. ....I got practical knowledge of physics from ur video....thx u so much
Why do u say u are Indian?
@@triclinium8508 because i think indian don't believe anyone....but if they trust anyone then with 💯 % ...so i called it.....and thank u so much it helps me alot
For the can at the end. There is a gyroscope in the can. An internal spinning mechanism that uses the principle of angular momentum along an axis to keep the can upright desipe the angle forced upon it. That's why it returns to it's original possition
8:46 Centripetal acceleration is inversely proportional to the radius, so it decreases as it gets further from the AoR... I feel like it has more to do with angular momentum and a change in the moment of inertia, but then again it's been a few weeks since I last did physics so I may be wrong 😅
I'm not confused but satisfied with my great inventors 👍🏻🌹🌹
1:10 wow the new engine technologies now days 😂
The two trammels at 1:04 ansd 1:57 could both definitely be piston motor designs, especially the 5 shuttle trammel--like a radial engine
I can't seem to help but to chuckle and say "Cool!" when I see things like this.
I used to have a similar illusion bank around 30 years ago. The downside is the very thing that helps create that illusion prevents it from holding much.
Your videos r to good love your background music.
There can be two reasons
1) Heavy mass at the base of can
2) Magnetic base of can
2:01 that is why circles move on ground easier than squares because each point on the circle is moving in an up, across, down pattern instead of sliding which causes a lot of friction.
That Reflective Wind Spinner is Amazing. Any ideas where I might get one. UK if possible Thank you
Lower centre of mass!
And also they filled the top with some very bouyant gasses to further lower the center mass beyond the depth of the container.
answer to the riddle
The can has a really heavy weight on the bottom of it.
Those sand grains were having one heck of a great party
The answer to the spinning water quiz is that the water is being flung outward from the center, which is why the water level in the center is so low.
And it’s the same reason for why u always get flung off the large spinny things on some playgrounds if they go too fast
SCIENCE!!!
1st of all this was awesome, 2nd of all, i liked every clip.
What do you get when you combine a reflective hologram with a mirascope? An urgent message to Obi-wan, of course. ;-P
Abstract toys! One of my totally most favorite things! Thank you for this ^_^
So the geehawwhimmydiddle is aka Trammel Of Archimedes lol.
4:30 Well, if it isn't Girl with a Pearl Earring!
5 shuffle one is rly cool, great vid ty
Totally misses the point of the Archimedes trammel... which is for drawing symmetrical ellipses. The camera focus is too close, so that's completely out of view.
i was going to ask or search what those were for, but you are awesome for saving me some time. i give you a thumbs up!
@@melkel2010 - Glad you know it and you're very welcome! :-)
Due to centre of mass
The mass on the centre is greater than the boundaries(I dont know what specific name it has) that's why the can always stands straight no matter how much you lean it.
So,so glad Centrifugal isn't listed as the explanation on the quiz! Thank you!
"Weebles wobbe but they don't fall down!" 😆😆
when all the cows fall over during an earth quake but we bulls wobble but we don't fall down
I had one of those mirror illusion piggy banks when I was a kid of about 7, it was a lovely bright yellow and it confused the everloving shit out of me lol
It would be nice if you provided links to the original designers of these things

When you realize IQ is an inaccurate measurement that can literally change by the hour and has too many independent variables to actually mean anything.
People who test low are usually stupid .
People who test high are usually rich .
Iq is an acceptable way of rating stupidity i think..
Mine is around 98 -102..im reaaally good at rts games so likely 102iq.

Thank you so much much
the shuttle trammel of archimedes = world's first fidget spinner
that mirror one is awesome thank you
The cans bottom is weighted so that the center of mass is not in the middle, making the can sit up right.
These are more interesting rather than confusing...
It's more like psychophysic. Any effect you have shown, can be also explained with psychological effects
The bottom part of the can is heavier
Right
some solid stuff if fixed at the bottom of the can from in side which is keeping the the center of gravity of the can constant that is why it gains its previous state Plus the solid stuff is covering less than 1/3 of cans volume
Best confusing toys ever seen in my life
Its not confusing its satisfying!..
And also mind blowing
Because you added some weight inside it and made the center of gravity more lower.
This is the reason i love science, anything is possible only required is that one brain!
VERY clever stuff. Very cool!
Thanks :)
Please also mention the original use of these objects... like trammel of archimedes .... bet he built it to show something.. what was it?
There is something very heavy in the bottom of the jar. Because of this, the center of mass is very low.
(Google Translate)
Plus maybe under table there is a magnet :)
"Jar?" You sir are not a beer drinker.
@@CoolDogWalter I used a translator. I do not know English.
One can make an amazing maze using those concepts.
9:06 simple, the cork in the bottom has most of the weight of the can and the can wasn’t tilted enough for it to fall on its side, therefore since the center of gravity was closer to the bottom of the can and not the top, it self righted itself
No body know how this all came in those people minds 😱
Ehh, actually many people know how these came in the creators minds.
What a brilliant toys 😵i really want this😔😍
The can behaves like that to attain stable equilibrium which is to return to its original position when slightly displaced:When the can is placed on its base on a flat surface (stable equilibrium),it returns to its original position when slightly displaced because the line of action of its weight cuts the supporting base internally, that is,the circumference of the base of the can.Under this condition, the weight of the body has a moment about the point where it's makes contact with the flat surface. The turning effect about that point tends to restore the body to its original position.
I hope I'm correct.
For the quiz the center mass lies the centre of the bottom of the can so when the can is displaced it the mass at the centre provides the maximum force towards gravity resulting in maximum torque and corrects itself.
And the top of the can has some stored gasses that are very bouyant. To further lower-er the center of mass, even beyond the botom of the can.
0:35 If you listen closely you can hear batman screaming for someone to help him get out of there.
Either the bottom is heavier or maybe you out a gyroscope in it xD prob not bc it will probably spin around.
It’s centrifugal force! Had you spun it hard enough it would have flown out all over the place!!
Trammel was so satisfying to watch
Yes !
Physics is *FUN*
There is some weight kept inside the can at the bottom
Or may be due to magnets(not sure)
Weight at the bottom is higher and also the shape of bottom is 45°(some angle with bottom flat shape)
So the tin have tendency to stand always
Cool I like the first toy, it shows how space can be curved and flat
