  • In this video we try the most popular street food in Northern Germany, Fischbrotchen. When at the beach you have to get fresh seafood and none better than a fresh fischbrotchen. We try the buttermackerel and Matjes fischbrotchen and give our opinions. If you haven't seen our recent video about the top things to do around Rugen then make sure to check it out.

Matjes is a young herring that has not yet spawned! It's good that you do what the locals do!

It was definitely different. We love trying the food that the locals eat.

Salmon (especially with honey mustard) and Bismarck slaps really hard too, would really recommend

Hey guys, good to see you are open enough to try the main food of the local areas. Once you are at the coast, fish has to be eaten. Also informe yourself always about the local specialties. Some will not match your taste but others will surprize you. CU

Thanks for watching! What are some local specialties where you live?

It is of course convenient for streetfood to put the fish between the two halves of a breadroll, but when at home try to eat cold fish with breaded wholegrain rye bread. And the best way to eat smoked or pickled fish is with fried potatoes (complete with chopped onions and cubes of bacon).

Oh, the smoked fish with potatoes as you described sounds so delicious! Thanks for watching!

I'm German and have to admit that the only "Fischbrötchen" I like is the Filet-O-Fish at McDonalds. Fellow Germans, don't hate me!

Is there still fish in a Filet-O-Fish?

May I ask if you're from the North or the South?
I get that licorique (Lakritz) isn't for everyone, but why fish???

@@dansattah I'm Bavarian, but that doesn't mean I don't like fish - just not cold, raw and on a bun. And our freshwater fish are better anyway. 🤪

@@hape3862 I gues it just depends on habits. I'm from Saxony, but always felt most at home on the "Ostsee" due to my Prussian-Syrian background.

if a fish tastes and smells like fish/fishy then its not fresh anymore

That is good advice. Coming from the middle of the US it is hard to get really fresh fish. Northern Germany had some great seafood though. Thanks for watching
