If you need more than 20 tabs and 4 apps open at the same time definitely get the 16GB. If not, go with the 8GB and save a few bucks. Apple M1 processor is worth it either way compared to any Windows at the same price, for now.
I used 8GB version for a couple of weeks and had the spinning beach ball fairly often. 16GB, only once when an app got out of control and used like 86GB of memory. I recommend people get the 16GB if they work on multiple apps (3-4+) at the same time.

8GB is okay , as long as you restart daily. There is an issue with the M1, where it uses around 2GB extra RAM, I hear that is down to the unified memory, getting used by the GPU? That said, the higher CPU speed means that you dont notice memory compression.
I have the 8gb version. The only time I notice a slight problem is when I leave Zoom on for days. It begins to lag whenever I join a session and also when my students activate or deactivate their cameras/microphones for some reason. So I restart every 2-3 days. Other than that, I haven't been able to tell if there is something I should be doing with the swap memory.
It’s meant to wear out faster. To be honest, instead of lasting 12 years, maybe it’ll last 10 years instead? Honestly I don’t believe the difference is that much. I suspect most of us would have a new device by then.
Software has been using more and more memory. 8gb as an entry level standard should have ended in 2017. Or at least allow users to upgrade ram with it being soldered.
@@ZaffsProductions while that may be true., what has gone backwards is soldered ram with no ability to upgrade. There is no need for it, except for business purposes. They are creating a limitation out of greed.

It would make sense for the GPU to use some RAM. I always shut mine down every time I use it.
This is the same issue with AMD 8 gb laptops with the vega GPUs. The GPU's use 2 gb off ram off the bat. So your 8 gb is really 6 gb.
I doubt those engineering softwares that need 16GB even run on macs. They're probably windows-only.
Most likely true!

Zoom seems to do that with any device it runs on unfortunately. Maybe they might optimise it in the future.
Will the SSD ware out faster if memory swapping is frequently used?

Yes! If you are compiling, you will use up a bit of the page file, if you are okay with that.

Keep in mind optimisation has come a long way, and page file swapping is much more efficient with SSDs.
