This a very practical accessment of what you need in a HD. Thanks for pointing that out - and potentially saving people a lot of money.
Also consider this: it's recommended to keep 10-15% of total ssd capacity free, because of data swap and if you fully occupy ssd space, the system is likely to slow down because of that.
The only thing keeping me from buying the M1 MB is the storage. I know I can’t live with just 256 GB. It’s ridiculously insufficient for 2021. I remember having 256 GB on my laptop 15 years ago. I don’t want to carry external SSD or depend on wifi availability. Storage shouldn’t be this expensive.
these days on the average, storage costs 10 cents per GB of internal SSD storage. so for 1TB costs $100 which is a reasonable norm. but apple solders all the ram and hard drive which prevents consumers from upgrading their own memory and hard drive, so they can charge consumers 4 times as much. what a blatant rip off.
Ordered an M1 MBP 256/16 GB. Never had a problem with my old Windows laptop with 256 GB. If I need more space for games or media, I’ll just buy myself a 512 SSD for $80 - way cheaper.
Have a windows laptop with 1TB and since I dont keep movies games and series like 10yrs ago. 1TB was an overkill barely used 300GB in 3 years (mostly junk I can delete instantly). So I bought 256GB mac as a second laptop with a 2TB HDD external. Most of my work on a laptop is cloud based web design, coding. Video and image editing, word processing, this doesn't need a lot of space
~256gb is sufficient for very light users: Think word docs, pdf docs, excel docs, a small music library, and a few hundred photos. ~512gb is sufficient for your standard user: Think some movies, a few thousand photos, a larger music library, some projects files and enough room for larger applications. ~1tb is sufficient for your pro user: Think working on larger professional projects with the ability to store some of their files ~~With the storage capability for windows bootcamp. ~2tb + is sufficient for high end / specialist users: Think having to store 4tb of raw video files shot on a 2 day commercial. My recommendation for most users is to at the very least get 512gb and if you can afford it get 1tb. It's always better to future proof your computer with a little bit more storage even if you don't think you need it now.
What do you mean "Upgrade the ram"? I am not a techie, I am just watching reviews because I am looking into a new laptop. Thank you if you decide to respond.
Smart choice, did the same. You can’t add more RAM but you can always buy more storage for media. 256 GB has always been enough for OS and app data on the computers I’ve had
Not everyone is rich enough to own a macbook with 512gb and above... I myself own a 256gb gold silicon air version and it serves my purpose pretty well.
With 256GB SSDs selling for under $50, and acknowledging my simple video editing needs, it's more than enough. The demo videos of editing 10-bit 4K videos on the MacBook Air with 8GB RAM and 256GB drive are impressive. Tempting to round-out my iPhone/iPad semi-suite with a sweet Mac PC...
The speeds of these external drives are fantastic nowadays. If you don't mind the inconvenience (and I don't), and don't plan on adding a ton of software that will eat up that internal storage - it's the way to go IMO.
Thanks, Sagi. One of my current assignments involves making routine color corrections to 182 30-minute videos and I'm having no speed-related issues while editing them in Premiere and exporting a podcast audio and RUclips audio + video on a nothing-special 256GB SSD. Love the tech!
So you have an M1 MacBook Air 8gb RAM 256gb SSD and have no problem with video editing on Final Cut Pro? I’m trying to figure out if I’ll be able to get away with using the new MBA for video editing
I think today you need 512g of storage in your laptop. The updates take up a lot of space so do the apps. It’s not just RAM that makes you computer run smoothly. Extra HD helps too. Just my experience.
Thanks for this. Just went with a 512-GB model... It's 2021 and these M1 machines are great at video and audio editing, there's at most a $25 wholesale price difference between a 512-GB and 1-TB SSD m.1 drive, the only logical reason Apple puts such crap storage on their Mac Books is to drive users to pay for an iCloud plan.
I personally think you should go for upgrading memory before storage. You can always back up your data through external or cloud storage. Future programs might require more memory to run correctly so if you are only upgrading one it should always be memory. Think you have made a mistake dude
@@Capricorn_IV That depends on use case. About year into owning my M1 Mac Book Air and I can report zero regrets on the decision to upgrade storage capacity over system RAM. The Mac apps seem to be a lot more memory efficient in general that what I encountered on Windows, but the M1 also seems to be optimized (see RUclips videos of dozens of tracks being open in Logic Pro on an M1 mac with only 8-GB of RAM). I think if you're looking to do creative intense projects and live in Photoshop, Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro, you will want 16-GB of RAM and 512-GB of storage for you large projects. But then you might as well buy a Mac Book Pro. On 8-GB I'm having no issue with creative programs like Unity3D, Logic Pro, iMovie, etc.. So I disagree with you. For most users 8-GB of RAM will be fine... Exception might be if you are in these creative tools 8+ hours a day needing working as a pro. You'll probably need the headroom. 256-GB standard disc space would not cut it for me, you can use external storage and wait on cloud storage to sync, but that's a lot of time awaiting.. and time is too valuable to me. I know I've had to live that life on another system I did make the mistake of going too low. So for me the 512-GB storage upgrade was the way to go.
Been looking for this info everywhere as a new potential MacBook customer. Damn storage is such a ripoff. I haven't used a Mac in 15 yrs. But all the other laptops suck now.
i spent ages finding an ipad with 256gb for a decent price. it was refurbished and in "fair" condition according to the site. bought it, was doing a bit more searching after purchasing and found this site i had never seen before, and there was this exact same ipad model. it was £7 more, but for 512gb and in "very good" condition. i was so annoyed, i cancelled the other order and bought the 512 gig one instead. so happy I've got it. it arrived in 2 days, was completely legitimate looks great
Apple knows they can charge a pretty premium for storage because there storage is so fast with the newer M1 MacBooks running over 6GB/sec -- so yeah, they can justify a somewhat higher price but Apple being Apple they take that liberty to the extreme. The RAM problem also introduces a storage problem by swapping so having additional storage is preferred to account for the greater tendency to move data from RAM to storage in swap. If you are cramped for SSD storage the OS will reuse the same areas more often reducing the lifespan so having more storage reduces the reuse problem. For the MacBook I'm looking to get, the M1 Max 16 inch with 64GB RAM and 2TB storage the greater amount of RAM should reduce the swap issue and having 2TB of storage should permit the swap area to move around so one area isn't over used. Of course, with 2TB there's no way I can keep all my file on it so I have externals and redundant ones.
Don't care. Giving us 256GB in 2022 is not OK. I was about to buy a new Apple laptop when I noticed Apple hard drive storage size is still stuck in 2008.
Thank you for this video. I always suggest people get 512GB of internal storage if the computer is your primary machine. Apple overcharges for the upgrade so don't get the largest capacities unless you truly need it. I've been contemplating getting the base MacBook Air to use as a companion to my iMac. The iMac has 1TB of SSD storage and also hosts my music and work folders. The MacBook Air would be perfect for connecting to my google drive, accessing email or downloading the occasional powerpoint, word file or excel document.
so is buying an M1 iMac with 16GB 512GB enough for a student that uses design apps and video edits? and if I were to use external storage for my iPhone which SSD do you recommend? do i need to backup that SSD too?
Love this video, spot on, I was doubting between 256-512, but then if I see how I use the computer, most of what I do is online, even if I did download a movie or 2 for travel I’d delete it after watching, music it’s mostly on my iPhone and even there I mostly stream it, now let’s say I’d have to store a lot of data like backup I’d just use an external drive as you mentioned on your video. Great video! 👍🏻
I just bought the 512GB M1 a few days ago, I am using it for office work and backing up my phone, as well as my personal finances/taxes. No doing any video work and I use iCloud for photos as well as DropBox and MS cloud for documents. I never download movies, as for games I’m going to be using my AppleTV 4K 3rd Generation with 128GB (once I get that) for Apple Arcade.
I bought the 1TB version and it worked great for the first 4 weeks, then began to get jumpy and sluggish. Just bought an external 1TB SSD to help with data. I imagine in a few years I’ll be at 100TB. :)
Dude, I don’t know how I got to your channel, but really have found all the answers I needed before buying my first MacBook. Appreciate your job. Subscribed. Liked. Commented. P.S. just ordered base Air yesterday 😅
1 TB, just save some money and go with the 1 TB, if you r planning to use it for next 5-6 years. You can replace the battery after 3 years but not the storage. From my previous experience, never go with 256 GB, skip 512GB, 1TB is the only option you should buy.
But I bought the 256gb 8gb ram just because I’m still a freshman in college. I don’t necessarily need the power. I did however buy an external sandisk ssd. I primarily game on my Xbox series x and watch movies/shows on my tv. Casually surf RUclips on my phone and iPad Pro. Was it a good choice to go with 256gb? Probably not but who cares.
so glad you found the channel! I think for your use it'll be just fine. You've go the external Sandisk for any large files so you should be good to go!
Wouldn't a company labeling a product as say 256GB when the storage is clearly 251GB illegal?. That's false advertisement and there has to be consumer laws being broken here.
I wholeheartedly agree. I used OneDrive for school, Google Photos for personal pictures (because I can access the app on my phone), Google Drive (2 accounts, 1 for personal and 1 business, and then iCloud works for my digital planning on my iPad. The only thing I keep on my MacBook Air are the CURRENT video files that I’m editing. That’s literally it 😂 If I upgrade I’m only getting 256gb, I sure it’ll be fine.

Have a windows laptop with 1TB and since I dont keep movies games and series like 10yrs ago. 1TB was an overkill barely used 300GB in 3 years (mostly junk I can delete instantly). So I bought 256GB mac as a second laptop with a 2TB HDD external.

It's always better to future proof your computer with a little bit more storage even if you don't think you need it now.
this is helpful comments thank you.
Hey, thanks for the amazing video, but I actually bought the 256 gb, and then bought a 2 tb hard drive. I decided to upgrade the ram instead
Great move Andre! More storage, more RAM - less spending! Thanks for being part of the channel!

@@hexagonmagnetics569 MacBooks have great resale value, doubt the M1 won’t have resale value in 2 years
Smart choice, did the same. You can’t add more RAM but you can always buy more storage for media. 256 GB has always been enough for OS and app data on the computers I’ve had
How?
Not everyone is rich enough to own a macbook with 512gb and above... I myself own a 256gb gold silicon air version and it serves my purpose pretty well.
I also got the 256GB Air - works well for what I need.
@@TechGearTalk I mean unless you're a hard-core content creator or a hard-core engineer or it person there's really no need for that upgrade.
I think plenty of users could use 512 if they plan on using this machine foe the next 5-7 years. It’s important for each user to get what they need.

@@homearathy4693 yes
Thanks for this. Just went with a 512-GB model... It's 2021 and these M1 machines are great at video and audio editing, there's at most a $25 wholesale price difference between a 512-GB and 1-TB SSD m.1 drive, the only logical reason Apple puts such crap storage on their Mac Books is to drive users to pay for an iCloud plan.
Exactly. Although you can buy an external HD to backup all of your photos and what not
I personally think you should go for upgrading memory before storage.
You can do almost all of your heavy work on the cloud. Idk why 512gb should be needed.
…TBW
Is the cloud fast enough for editing video stored there though??
The cloud is neither fast or reliable enough for heavy work. Hell, half the time it isn’t either for light work either.
Been looking for this info everywhere as a new potential MacBook customer. Damn storage is such a ripoff. I haven't used a Mac in 15 yrs. But all the other laptops suck now.
The fact that ssd is soldered to the board doesn't mean it's irreplaceable. It CAN be upgraded, it just takes more effort than you'd want to
Always great to get an idea of storage beyond MBs, GBs, and TBs.
Indeed!
i spent ages finding an ipad with 256gb for a decent price. it was refurbished and in "fair" condition according to the site. bought it, was doing a bit more searching after purchasing and found this site i had never seen before, and there was this exact same ipad model. it was £7 more, but for 512gb and in "very good" condition. i was so annoyed, i cancelled the other order and bought the 512 gig one instead. so happy I've got it. it arrived in 2 days, was completely legitimate looks great
Apple knows they can charge a pretty premium for storage because there storage is so fast with the newer M1 MacBooks running over 6GB/sec -- so yeah, they can justify a somewhat higher price but Apple being Apple they take that liberty to the extreme.
Thank you for watching! Yup, I agree with your approach

So what you decided?
what you decided please ?
My last laptop had a whopping 32gb of storage. Yep you heard that night
32 gig is okay. It'd be a bit "whopping" as you said if it's like 128gb or 256gb :)

1 TB, just save some money and go with the 1 TB, if you r planning to use it for next 5-6 years. You can replace the battery after 3 years but not the storage. From my previous experience, never go with 256 GB, skip 512GB, 1TB is the only option you should buy.
Love the video, love your content. I found you by accident too! Glad I did
But I bought the 256gb 8gb ram just because I’m still a freshman in college.
Would the 256GB be good if I was to use it for school and maybe Logic Pro once in a while?
Google drive, Onedrive, etc ... are pretty cheap and safer than local storage. No need to pay all this money that Apple charges for storage
I’m currently in this situation and would gladly pay the extra $$ to have 1TB. It’s cheaper than having to buy a new MacBook Pro. Ugh!

My 2009 iMac 27” machine died and I did not want to repair the item. The next day I bought a Mac Mini with the 512GB drive and 8GB of RAM. When I downloaded from Time Machine, I had only 40GB free. I took the Mac Mini back and ordered one with 1TB of Storage as well as 16GB of RAM. On my iMac I stored all my photos, iPad backups, iPhone backups, instructional videos for the Guitar and other things. The 256 GB and 512 GB SSD don’t fit my work flow. I understand that I could have purchased a cheaper solution using an External SSD Drive.
