Continuing our war with Amalek

  • One of the truths I’ve realised as I grow in maturity in my trust in God is that “We do not battle with flesh and blood but with spiritual wickness in high places “ Eph 6:10
Whenever I find myself in a conflict situation, I ask the Holy Spirit for discernment, as to what spirit is attacking me.
    Let’s recall:
When David faced Goliath it was not a physical fight between a huge 10 foot tall giant and a teenage Jewish boy. That was just what was visible to the assembled armies at Socoh.
Superficially it seemed impossible for David to win, but as we read the pre battle words we see what the real fight was about.
And when the Philistine looked around and saw David, he scorned and despised him.
43 And the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that you should come to me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 The Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.
45 Then said David to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the ranks of Israel, Whom you have defied.
46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will smite you and cut off your head. And I will give the corpses of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.
    1Sam. 17:42 AMPC
We see quite clearly that the contest was between the philistine god and the Lord of Hosts. That proved to be no contest!
Knowing this David went ahead and made declarations of faith, even before he launched the stone. That stone had a supernatural inbuilt guidance system and could not fail to strike Goliath’s forehead. (verse 49).
As I said, when we face our battles we need to discern what is the root spirit behind the attack on our finances, health or relationships.
It could easily be the envious spirit of Amalek.
More examples from Israel’s history include:
As the nation started a new phase of development under the anointed king Saul, the prophet Samuel had told Saul what his top priority would be :
Samuel told Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint you king over His people Israel. Now listen and heed the words of the Lord.
2 Thus says the Lord of hosts, I have considered and will punish what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him in the way when [Israel] came out of Egypt.
3 Now go and smite Amalek and utterly destroy all they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and donkey. 1 Sam. 15:1-3AMPC
So just crowned king, with oil still on his hair Saul was given his assignment.
    Exterminate the Amalekites.
Their army with Agag their king was there in front of Saul who obediently attacked them, but failed to kill the best of the sheep andthe king.
Saul may have considered this as a humanitarian act of mercy:
10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying,
11 I regret making Saul king, for he has turned back from following Me and has not performed My commands. 1 Sam. 15:10,AMPC
About 38 years later David took over the Kingdom. At the time the prophet spoke, David was not even born!
But the Amalekite spirit was still causing distress:
David was i distraught when his camp at Ziklag is plundered by the Amalekites, who kidnap his wives and take away much loot. After strengthening himself in the Lord, David is told to “pursue and overtake” the raiders, and to “rescue” the hostages. 1 Sam.30:18-20
Then in the Book of Esther, we see this ancient rivalry once more when Mordechai, a Benjamite like Saul, faces off against Haman the Agagite - meaning a descendant of the Amalekite king, Agag. But the beautiful Queen Esther fasted and persuaded the king to help save her people.
This deliverance from Haman is celebrated yearly in the feast of Purim
The hatred of the Jewish people is attributed to many different social and political reasons.Politicians and international statesmen world try to impose peace talks on the hostile nations surrounding Israel. Anti semitismis a new title for an age old hatred.
Few modern day Jews understand why they are hated , but their rabbis do.
It’s also clear why we as Christians are hated in our families and communities
    Here is Christ’s answer:
17 This is what I command you: that you love one another.
18 If the world hates you, know that it hated Me before it hated you.
19 If you belonged to the world, the world would treat you with affection and would love you as its own. But because you are not of the world [no longer one with it], but I have chosen (selected) you out of the world, the world hates (detests) you. John 15: 17-19
Let’s stay full of God’s love and the hatred of the world will just bounce off.
