My father bought one of these new in 1960.It was an absolute nightmare, always breaking down and once when in stalled starting backwards and propelling him into a ditch. However it was a nice looking machine and our first family transport.
His scooter looks tip top. I have just bought a non running James SC4 (engine is seized and I 'm just sorting that out. Any body got any spares for the SC1 or SC4?. How about a facebook page for James scooters?
Hello I don't quite understand what you mean by Magbeti is shut sorry. However I cant remember how I actually did this one but there is a couple of ways you can do this. First the easy way do away with the ignition coil inside the mag and the wiring. Take a wire from the 6 volt battery pos ( assuming its neg earth ) through a switch ( a flick switch or key switch ) to a 6 volt dc ignition coil connect to + from the - side of the coil take a wire down to the points, fit a condenser to the pos wire. done. If in doubt just look at any old bike or car wiring diagrams they are all the same. There is another way but it means wiring it ac using either a lighting coil or winding your own ac coil. If you are not familiar with ac ignition I would stay away from this.
The standard ignition set up on these engines is very poor even when they were new they didn't work that well and this was a major contribution for the reputation of being unreliable, Compared with a modern flywheel the magnets were weak and the ignition coils were prone to fail. If you have an old ignition coil of this type don't even consider trying to make it work they are 50 years old and WILL be faulty , either buy a new one or convert it to 6 volts dc.and fit a 6 volt battery and charge the battery using the lighting coils. On this particular machine if I remember I wound my own 6 volt primary coil and used this to power the car type 6 volt coil. I could have used this coil to charge the battery but on this one I just used it to power the dc coil.
@@derekevans8266 Derek What type of Ignition switch was fitted to this scooter, and also could you let me know (by way of photos)how the side panels were attached to the scooter at the back. information on this scooter is in short supply. malcolm wunatey@googlemail.co.uk
lets have a look at it. I have to say its not the easiest bike to restore. I have done two. Removing the bodywork is difficult and the wiring is a nightmare to get into the right position without rubbing on something. The petrol tank on mine was absolutely solid with solidified fuel I had to cut the tank open to get it out. Also don't expect the lighting and ignition coils to work they most certainly be nackered and make sure the flywheel magnet is ok. Good luck

I think they meant 'the magneto was shot'meaning it was knackered!!
We have just bought a very sad looking one.
Spares are a knightmare to find for these
