1936 Francis Barnett seagull running. Its halfway through restoration. A lot more work needed. First ride in first gear down the drive today.
Thinking gotta mix oil with gas on that one ?
Make sure your plug wire and plug cap are good, don't use a resistor plug cap, and make sure the carb is clean, get some guitar strings to run thru the carb passages, use a Champion N-3 plug, make sure valves are adjusted, make sure float needle is good, then I turn on gas and choke, open the throttle and kick it thru three times to prime cylinder with gas, close throttle, kick.
The Sears 106 and its big brother, the 124; the 175 and 250 Allstates (Puchs), the moped and the 3-spped hand-shift scooter--the stuff of dreams in a catalogue and in real life with the Allstates.
Cigweld wirefeeder faulty
Hi Derek. Very interested in your prop (side) stand - any details available? I'm looking at options for my F-B Cruiser 75.....
I'm having exactly the same issues . With the 130 I'm going to copy exactly what you have done . Thanks for sharing .. legend
My father bought one of these new in 1960.It was an absolute nightmare, always breaking down and once when in stalled starting backwards and propelling him into a ditch. However it was a nice looking machine and our first family transport.
Well its April 2020 four years on from when I made this video and the mig has finally packed in. Its been an absolute trogon its been used nearly everyday but this morning it failed, the pcb that feeds the wire feed motor has gone so I will have to get another mig The part is discontinued and its £40 to have the board repaired but the torch is battered and the feed motor must be on its last legs as well. Ah well.
My first bike as well. 1966 in Val-d’Or, Québec. Bought from Sears in Val-d’Or. I was sixteen years old. Since then, I owned 7 other motorcycles : Honda 200, 450 and 750 K, Goldwing 1983 + Yamaha 125 cc, Tmax 500 cc and now Honda ST 1300. Motorcycling is a way of life. Thank you for your video.
I have been given a mig welder, sip migmate 130 and the wire feed is erratic. I have found a forum that has a tip for it to replace the plastic tube with curtain wire for the wire to travel more smoothly. I will make a brace for the rollers too 👍
Another update on the SIP pocket mig another year on and its still working great. In fact this month the co2 bottle ran out I have been using the large pub gas bottles but when it ran out I had bought a small disposable bottle of co2 ages ago and never used it so I connected this up until I had time to go for a refill. It seems to be even better with this disposable gas I am getting a cleaner weld and it seems hotter. I cant explain it but its great.
Thanks for sharing 😊
It's nice kinda sounds like a jawa
I have century 80 gasless wire feed welder and has automatic wire feed and I can't weld worth a shit with it because I can't control the speed
I bought a gas / gasless mig from screwfix direct when it arrived I couldn't believe how big and heavy it was, I thought great this will last forever, It was absolutely rubbish I had it one day and set it back. Gasless dosnt work in my opinion.
I had a Maypole mig welder over 20 years ago with the same wire feed unit, I went through alot of wire feed units and the problem is they are cheap shit and not up to the task period. Most of the cheaper Clarke, Draper and SIP migs have these units in them and the best thing you can do is stay clear.

His scooter looks tip top. I have just bought a non running James SC4 (engine is seized and I 'm just sorting that out. Any body got any spares for the SC1 or SC4?. How about a facebook page for James scooters?
i done your modification to my little sip 120 mig welder now it is pulling a 15kg reel without slipping thanks
We have just bought a very sad looking one.
Spares are a knightmare to find for these
lets have a look at it. I have to say its not the easiest bike to restore. I have done two. Removing the bodywork is difficult and the wiring is a nightmare to get into the right position without rubbing on something. The petrol tank on mine was absolutely solid with solidified fuel I had to cut the tank open to get it out. Also don't expect the lighting and ignition coils to work they most certainly be nackered and make sure the flywheel magnet is ok. Good luck
Just noticed you have A car ignition coil on this I have Sc1 but the magbeti is shut So is coils how does this setup work plz
Hello I don't quite understand what you mean by Magbeti is shut sorry. However I cant remember how I actually did this one but there is a couple of ways you can do this. First the easy way do away with the ignition coil inside the mag and the wiring. Take a wire from the 6 volt battery pos ( assuming its neg earth ) through a switch ( a flick switch or key switch ) to a 6 volt dc ignition coil connect to + from the - side of the coil take a wire down to the points, fit a condenser to the pos wire. done. If in doubt just look at any old bike or car wiring diagrams they are all the same. There is another way but it means wiring it ac using either a lighting coil or winding your own ac coil. If you are not familiar with ac ignition I would stay away from this.
The standard ignition set up on these engines is very poor even when they were new they didn't work that well and this was a major contribution for the reputation of being unreliable, Compared with a modern flywheel the magnets were weak and the ignition coils were prone to fail. If you have an old ignition coil of this type don't even consider trying to make it work they are 50 years old and WILL be faulty , either buy a new one or convert it to 6 volts dc.and fit a 6 volt battery and charge the battery using the lighting coils. On this particular machine if I remember I wound my own 6 volt primary coil and used this to power the car type 6 volt coil. I could have used this coil to charge the battery but on this one I just used it to power the dc coil.
@@derekevans8266 Derek What type of Ignition switch was fitted to this scooter, and also could you let me know (by way of photos)how the side panels were attached to the scooter at the back. information on this scooter is in short supply. malcolm wunatey@googlemail.co.uk
@@derekevans8266 I think they meant 'the magneto was shot'meaning it was knackered!!
The problem I've got with my old sip handymig is that the wire feed motor gets its power from the main transformer so the voltage dip when starting causes the feed to slow down and then you get burn back, and when you arc again if does the same thing. The result is a really difficult to control weld at any speed or power setting. The fix would be to use a seperate transformer to power the wire feed motor, but I haven't worked out how to do that yet. Funnily, I've not had the problem you have here with the tensioning feed rollers, but then again that's probably because my old mig has barely had 20 hours use in the 20+ years I've had it!
I love it.
An update. Two years on from making this video and the welder is still working great I had to fit a new liner last year but apart from this its never missed a beat apart from wear and tear. It could do with a new torch its falling to bits the shroud is held on with wire and the tip is loose in the gun but it still works well.
nice one man, bought mine new 10 years ago welded with it once and had the same issues should have brought it back, im about to sort it once and for all tomorrow. might replace the feed motor while im at it as these also give problems
Just an update on this modification I made may 2016 its may 2018 now and its still working fine. I use the welder every week for something or other. This machine has been brilliant. The only thing I have had to do is change the liner and fit a new tip.
great looking bike
I had one that I bought from a "Buddy." He put black electrical tape over the Sears name on the back of the seat, and tried to pass it off as a Harley Davidson. It used to eat nylon timing gears, and even back in the 1970s, they were hard to find. I finally DevCon-ed one back together and it never failed again. After I sold it, it suffered a carb leak that burned it to the ground.
Take that Del Orto carb and throw, it in the trash and put a PWK 30mm on it and it will start on the first kick. That's how I fixed mine.
Buddy of mine down the street got a new one of those when we were in high school, kept it looking like new.
The torch will probably need a service to. Any hobby mig that has feed problem needs new liners.
First bike. Bought out of a shed in 1973 when I was 16. Three days cranking and fiddling before I had it runnings. A stupid teen I probably just kicked enough fresh fuel through it to clean the carbs. That's how I learned to ride. Around the yard, then up and down the gravel road in front of the house, then I was off and gone and riding as much in the dirt as on the road. Stripped it down, road it so hard, clueless and it ran and ran. Loved that bike and still miss it. Wish the HD FLHS I recently picked up worked as well.
This (model) was my first and only bike. Bought a new one in 1969. Never had a problem with it. Top speed, wide open, could be 60 or so--on flat highway, but generally it was hard-pressed to go 55. I used it for about 2 years, as my main mode of transportation. Nothing but good memories about it.
Does anyone know why my wire feed keeps shooting out with my finger off the trigger?
Happened to us on a job your probably having an issue with the contacts in the switch in your controller you might need a new gun. Or to jerry rig it.
If available I might be willing to purchase.
The bike is for sale. My bike riding days are coming to an end. send me a message if you are interested.
Thanks for sharing - great tip.
I have the same issues with my mig, shitty plastic feeders, going to do the same fix on mine, thanks for the post
l had one of those engine as a kid, nice little power plant
Sounds crisp, very nice.
hi there just wanted to say thank you for posting this ive just got same mig sip 150 turbo with same problem will try this when courier brings mine just bought it off ebay he says intermitent fault with torch i hope its this problem
What's with all the fuckin birds whistling?......is your shop also a pet store??? BTW, the wire-feed on my MIG has been acting up as well. I don't know ANY MIG that doesn't have, or have had, wire-feed problems!!!
You would think a species as intelligent as us humans, that can send people into outer space, and land satellites on fuckin comets, could figure out a way to build a proper wire-feed system for MIG's!!!! lolololol
The birds in my garden are happy its only a garden shed. A few years ago my cebroa welder packed in and I bought a new welder from screwfix direct. This thing turned up it was huge made in china. It was supposed to be a gas and gasless welder with reverse polarity, it came without gas or wire so I had to go out and buy some gasless wire. I spent 4 hours trying to weld something / anything with it. What a load of rubbish gasless looked like pigeon shit and the wire feed was pathetic. It went back the next day.
🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏼👍🏼
beautiful bike Derek, lovely restoration. I'm trying to finish off my 1973 suzuki GT250K model. just gotta build her up now . that wee dream is gorgeous. can you not get original pipes for it. I don't know what it is about the dream, but I can't help liking it. 😀 👍 👍
Very nice! The Sears 106 was my first bike.
Nice !
Nice work on those carb covers, I'd be willing buy a set if you made one.
Nice Work Derek!
