First of all, I’d like to say how incredibly embarrassed I am after seeing that so-called interview with Dai Vernon. I’ve been a practising magician for more than 50 years and I actually remember seeing that particular interview, which was also the first time I saw Dai Vernon on TV. That interview was from an awful Australian talk show that aired around 1978 to 79, and to this day I hoped to forget. The interviewer’s name is Peter Couchman. Around that time there were many wannabe talk shows trying to find a new variety show and attempting to emulate the Johnny Carson format….. and as you can see, it flopped big time.
It’s still puzzles me today how Peter Couchman got the gig as he’s technically a political journalist and interviewed mostly politicians and all political events. For some unbeknownst reason he was lured over to the commercial networks after only reporting on Public TV. During this commercial TV stint, he was offered the show called, The Peter Couchman Show, a daytime talk show and then moved to the late-night format, “Peter Couchman Tonight”. I think ratings wise two people and a cat watched the show until it finally folded. With tail between his legs, Couchman went back to radio hosting political shows in 1980.
I hope none of you mind me posting this as I just wanted to fill in the gap for the great embarrassment of an interview. I promise you all, Australia has far more wonderful talent than that man.

I don't think the host is aware he is disrespecting the magician. Taking the avenue of 'lets see if we can suss out the trick' the host thinks he is bigging up the magician and keeping the audiences interest.

It hurts me to see these legendary magicians (Dai Vernon, Tommy Wonder) being treated with such disrespect.
There is a spectrum of people like this. I have a set of things for people like this.
Host coulda been worse by grabbing stuff.
