Hey Mike, you wont probably see this. But Learnign the monte scam isn't that hard. I recommend you try it for one of your videos, and try to disclose as little as the method as possible. Just an idea. ;)
AND depending on where the scam is happening, someone in the crowd could just grab your wallet and run. Remember these people are scammers, they don't care about winning the "right" way. Almost everyone in that crowd is in on the scam
I've seen this done in NY. Also, even though Steven talked about others being part of the team, you need to know that it's usually not just the people that win that are part of the team. There are also lookouts and pickpockets that can be part of the team. So even if you don't play, if you stop to watch, be VERY careful.
If they think you know what is going on, they might approach you (I've had this happen). I didn't feel threatened (but I'm also a big guy), but probably should have. It was more of a, "Hey, you look like you know what's going on, don't ruin it for us and we won't have a problem with each other."
gynandroidhead Actually even the ones who know how to do that get fooled. Of course the dealer should be really good, but I suppose that all of them are good enough, since they don't fear to perform outside.

The main move is to release the top card instead of the bottom card being shown. When he has the queen visible, there's a joker on top of it. He then *appears* to slam the queen down, but is actually dropping a joker (the top card) and keeping the queen in his hand. But don't go thinking you know how to beat the game now...there are MANY more moves that can be employed to ensure profit for the scammers. Just stay away - no exceptions!

I saw this exact same thing when I worked in New York City in the 1980s. They had the bent card and they had schills too. A guy who worked at my company lost three $20 bets in less than a minute. The cool thing was it was on a narrow street and they had guys stationed at each end of the block. When a policeman would come around that street, those guys would yell something in Spanish, and poof, the cardboard card stand was gone in an instant. If you didn't know better, your $20 was lost in a second. And lots of people didn't know better.
I've never seen this scam performed IRL before, but I've heard of it many times. People will always lose playing at it. I'm so glad you did this video Steven because it can help others avoid being taken! : )
I've seen different people do this 3-card monte scam more than a dozen times in major cities. The one time that an actual player spotted the right card, when the scammer started reaching for his wallet to pay the player, a person in the crowd - who was working with the scammer, of course - loudly shouted, "Police. We gotta run!" The scammer ran off immediately, even leaving behind the cheap wooden table and the three cards. Of course, there wasn't actually any police officers around - that was just their way of literally running away so they don't have to pay out.
I distinctly remember my dad falling for 3-Card Monte in NYC over 30 years ago when I was about 9 years old. I still don't understand how it works, but at least I learned the valuable lesson not to fall for it!

His "accomplices" actually left pissed off and I walked over to a hotel I wasn't staying at and walked around to different hotels till I got to mine and never saw the guys again.
freestylegreek Yes. Happened to me in Germany. I won five hands and finally a buddy tapped me on the shoulder said "Let's go". Being Military I knew the tone. What he told me later was there were guys totally NOT Interested in the game but ME. We walked back on bright open sidewalks all the way home. He told me later that if I won any more I'd not have collected it. He was street smart while I was from a small town kid just happy to win free money. Unfortunately for the dealer I had very good hand eye coordination. Fortunately for me I had a buddy who knew what time it was and possibly saved my butt.
Saw this scam in New York. These 2 girls wanted to play but I told them not to since it's obviously a scam. And they didn't want $20. Minimum bet was like $100! Absolutely disgusting. There were 2 other people participating in the scam. They were the only ones who won so it was more than obvious.
I mean It would've been ironic since he was playing three card monte on the streets and held 20 pound in his hand... I'm just saying it would have been difficult to explain!
Yeah it was quite possible given that everything about it looked just like the legitimate scam. That's why I was careful to make my opening line 'this is a scam! not for money!'
I remember seeing the Romanians doing this on the exact bridge in 2010. It was obvious fellow Romanians were in on the scam but my gf at the time who's a lawyer wanted to play. Funny how one can be so smart but not see a scam in front of them.
And I bet you are not that vocal about the Romanian doctors and nurses taking care of your people, or the Romanian engineers and construction workers building your infrastructure.
My dad told me about this game in Mexico, a guy played and when he didn't win he pulled out a gun and said show me all the cards, realized it was a scam and shot the guy in the head
Every second one at least one idiot is born that’s the real reason why the game is still around. From the time I start writing at least 20 curious guys was born. What’s your name?
I was wondering when you'd get to the people in on it. That's a big part of the scam. I use to watch a team at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. They'd have people winning big as a way to attract suckers. They also had a guy at each end of the block watching out for the police and a runner or two. They set the game up on cardboard boxes and when the alert came, they just knocked everything over and walk away. Seen this for decades in the USA, coast to coast, but I've never seen it done in London.
It plays on the human fallacy that one can pay enough attention and make the right choice. The problem, as displayed here is that the game is rigged and there is no possible right choice to make. Gullibility. The sad thing, or maddening thing is that now everyone standing around these scams has a smartphone in the pocket that could have told them in seconds that it was a scam. People, stop believing what you are shown and told. Always verify everything involving your money. The saying “most people are good” is wrong. It should more accurately be “most people are deeply flawed, with complex behavior dictated in part by life stressors, unfortunate decisions and losses”
So smooth. I used to ride the city bus, and there was a guy who would set up three plastic soft drink bottle caps, and a piece of paper crumpled into a pea. Shell game, and he had his plant in the audience. The dealer must have cleared two hundred dollars in fifteen minutes, and whenever people started to get angry, he and his buddy would just hit the next bus stop and leave.
I saw this happening out in vegas years ago. I was walking back to my hotel and there was a group watching some guy do this right out in front. Someone was wise to the trick and screamed “it’s in your back pocket” as they walked away. (It actually was in their pocket) Almost immediately, two people from the crowd started following and harassing the person until security came out and chased them away.
When he's holding multiple cards with one hand, he wants us to think he's putting on the table the one below, when he's actualy putting the one above. So he's showing to people that one card, which is currently below and he "puts it" on the table, but he doesn't. He puts the one, which is currently above, while still holding this below card. He just lets this "above" card to slide on the table, but it happens so quickly, that we can easily miss that and think it was the "below" card, which he showed us. You can see that perfectly between 1:29 and 1:30. Just set speed to 0.25 and pause at the moment, when he puts the card on the table.
This is EXACTLY how i lost $60 in the Bronx . . . there was a person there in the crowd who was allowed to win when i came up, and as soon as the cops came, they both disappeared.
Lol, I at first thought he was commenting over the video and repeating what the black shirt guy said probably because of some audio issues. It wasnt until 1:50 until I realized that the guy was actually him.
The funny thing is once you know the scam you'll win. But youll be flagged from playing. We got 200$ us from one guy and they all broke character while we taunted and explained it. What they DIDN'T know is as soon as we saw them we called transit authority and gave the bus route/number and descriptions. Theft by deception is a class C felony. We got to keep the money too.
So you can never win because no matter what you pick it will be a joker or is there still always a 1/3 chance in picking a queen? Someone please explain I'm a little confused because while watching it I guessed the card 2 times in a row.
I used to perform this entire routine, made popular by Dai Vernon. However, it takes so much skill to accomplish in a real world setting. I only perform it if the situation demands it.
My grandfather taught me the card trick chase the lady. I used to use the trick at school to win dinner money & money for after school etc. Also can be funny to gamble with friends, acquaintances or people I've met in pubs/bars. Only for a drink or couple of quid.
I never had occsaion to try it. But I'm pretty sure if you bait against your "intuition" (created by the dealer) you can win. But pretty sure they will not let you go away with their money... Btw I tried on the video and it worked. I wish I could try with you :D
It has literally nothing to do with intuition (or lack thereof) or being able to follow the right card though. You lose if the "dealer" wants you to lose.
Crazy thing is: I knew how a dealer was doing the trick. Everytime he would shuffle the cards about he subtley switched the card placement somewhat and you can barely notice the movement. Sometimes I managed to lucky guess but majority of the time I still got out played.
I saw the same thing done with cups and a ball. It was amazing how some people fell into the scam... Until an off-duty police officer happened to pass by and kick the sh*t out of their business 😂
Nice swap with the jokers when he pulled the wallet out. 2 card split in the right hand while he pulled the wallet with the left hand, had 2 queens under his wallet for a quick switch. Very smooth
I remember seeing this crooked game years ago in the streets of Manhattan. The scammer always allowed the person ‘working’ with him to win a few hands then some unsuspecting simpleton lays down a bet.
If you ‘got it right every time’ that still won’t help. The scammer can still switch the card before turning it over, or another one of their team will bet on a different card and they ‘will have to take the larger bet’.

He told me later that if I won any more I'd not have collected it. He was street smart while I was from a small town kid just happy to win free money. Unfortunately for the dealer I had very good hand eye coordination. Fortunately for me I had a buddy who knew what time it was and possibly saved my butt.
Rxonmymind that's exactly it....you win big , your gonna get robbed.
Carlos Hernandez yes i do
"Any of you recognized this yet?"
"Yes, I'm Italian"
Saw this scam in New York. These 2 girls wanted to play but I told them not to since it's obviously a scam. And they didn't want $20. Minimum bet was like $100! Absolutely disgusting. There were 2 other people participating in the scam. They were the only ones who won so it was more than obvious.
Those 2 "winners" were the "shills," working with the dealer.
“What’s *YOU’RE* name??”
“Paul.”
“What’s your name??”
“Paul.”
“What’s your name??”
*“Boyinaband!”*
took me a while to realize it, nice one
I dont get it
So what if the police came in and saw you "hustling"? That would've been a great video...
he hasn't taken any money off anyone so please explain to me what exactly they would arrest him for?
I mean It would've been ironic since he was playing three card monte on the streets and held 20 pound in his hand... I'm just saying it would have been difficult to explain!
Yeah it was quite possible given that everything about it looked just like the legitimate scam. That's why I was careful to make my opening line 'this is a scam! not for money!'
I don't think you know what the word 'ironic' means.
not really since he had about a dozen witnesses. pretty easy to explain.
I remember seeing the Romanians doing this on the exact bridge in 2010. It was obvious fellow Romanians were in on the scam but my gf at the time who's a lawyer wanted to play. Funny how one can be so smart but not see a scam in front of them.
And I bet you are not that vocal about the Romanian doctors and nurses taking care of your people, or the Romanian engineers and construction workers building your infrastructure.
you thought to yourself why don't i work on destroying the reputation of millions of hard working people to soothe my broken ego
wait, you think lawyers are smart?
At 3:50 the dude is fixing to fork you if you don't pay him his winnings.
Haha what’s your name “Paul”, sorry what’s your name “Paul”, sorry what’s your name “ow it’s Dave”...absolutely split me up 😂
My dad told me about this game in Mexico, a guy played and when he didn't win he pulled out a gun and said show me all the cards, realized it was a scam and shot the guy in the head
lol is this some drug dealer show
Really Smooth slight of hand with the cards when you brought your wallet it! Caught me the first time off guard!
Why’s my man holding a fork in the green bomber jacket 😳😂
Watercooled Performance couldn’t of but it better myself babi
@random they need to ban racists like you!
whats ur name?
paul
excuse me?
paul
sorry what was that?
Dave
LMAOOO
How this scam is still around is beyond me!
Every second one at least one idiot is born that’s the real reason why the game is still around. From the time I start writing at least 20 curious guys was born. What’s your name?
Man your sleights are so clean it's frustrating, lol. I know what you're doing but I still can't see it, amazing skill
The camera work is infuriating.
It's in on the trick
I was wondering when you'd get to the people in on it. That's a big part of the scam. I use to watch a team at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. They'd have people winning big as a way to attract suckers. They also had a guy at each end of the block watching out for the police and a runner or two. They set the game up on cardboard boxes and when the alert came, they just knocked everything over and walk away.
Seen this for decades in the USA, coast to coast, but I've never seen it done in London.
You make it look so effortless like you're just having fun. Great video Steven keep up the great work!
The guy in the end just casually holding a fork
What an awesome trick! The audience participation was so humorous! Thank you for creating another video that made me smile =)
Thanks so much!
@@stevenbridgeshi Steve, I was hoping you’d show us how it actually worked? Like where does the queen go if it’s not the one everyone thinks it it
I saw this happening out in vegas years ago.
Plot twist, Dave's real name is Rodney... lovely jubbly!
I want to run into this scam and play along until they ask for betting money.
Than i would say : Thank you and walk away.
tis is actually so good, even though you explained it all I still had no clue how it was done. love it and thanks for deterring me from being scammed!
Well the thing you need to know is to not play it hehe
Even when you slow playback down to 0.25, it's still hard to see the switch. Very impressive!
I Lost $300 on Las Vegas corner to this scam !
Unlucky man! An expensive lesson to learn :/
Idiot.
+mauriano baruso your own fault.
Saw this scam when I was child, some things never gets old.
Playback Speed 0.25 @ 1:30 and you can see the slight of hand real good, props dude
This was a scam in NYC decades ago. The video for Run-DMC "It's Tricky" shows 3-Card Monte with Penn and Teller as the dealers. From 1987
I went on the london bridge and counted how many stands there were for betting and stuff like this...
There was 11 ^^
!!!!!!!!!!!
This scam is old, The Real Hustle did a similar thing
Watching this 4years later. Still brilliant! 👍
U can bet on the obviously wrong card it's gonna be a winner
Steven: I'm sorry, what's your name?
Paul: 😒 ... Dave
This was great I wish more people would out these people for their scams
+x SyZz even if you pick at random the dealer can switch the card last second
Yeah right
I keep walking when I see stuff like that. If it's trick cards that stick to each other, or something else, you're going to get scammed.
its slight of hand. always follow the cards they don’t show you:) i managed to follow it until his final everything was a queen :).
It would be nice if the camera man didn't have adhd. Couldn't even focus on the cards to make the video relevant.
James 😂Laughed so frickin hard ... man u made my day with ur comment caught me off guard
I used to perform this entire routine, made popular by Dai Vernon. However, it takes so much skill to accomplish in a real world setting. I only perform it if the situation demands it.
Everybody hates Chris taught me this lol
My grandfather taught me the card trick chase the lady. I used to use the trick at school to win dinner money & money for after school etc. Also can be funny to gamble with friends, acquaintances or people I've met in pubs/bars. Only for a drink or couple of quid.
Sooooooooooooooooooo no actual explanation then?
This used to be very popular scam in Greece but you can see it in the streets of Athens time to time
anyone notice the guy wearing sandals and socks in the back xd
Yeah, that's actually how the trick is done.
This exact thing happened to my dad, step by step in the 70s in New York
893 scammers disliked this video
I learned absolutely nothing, but I was entertained
Scammer scams people with this trick.
Steven: Hold my cards.
what kind of mental damage are you required to have to bet money on a street gig
Nice swap with the jokers when he pulled the wallet out. 2 card split in the right hand while he pulled the wallet with the left hand, had 2 queens under his wallet for a quick switch. Very smooth
Nobody:
This guy: *The jokers do not pay*
I remember seeing this crooked game years ago in the streets of Manhattan. The scammer always allowed the person ‘working’ with him to win a few hands then some unsuspecting simpleton lays down a bet.
I love doing this I'm 13 and this is how I get money off of my family
I mean... that's one way to live I guess haaha
I came here from your newer card counting content and I have to say, this is awesome!
