Hats off to the developers for preserving the local history in such a thoughtful way. Land management themes do not usually have this much care towards the former tenants of real estate properties. San Diego is keeping history alive and well. P.S. The rapid-fire baseball zingers were awesome too 😅
They did it kicking and screaming! It was really the people and the local planning agency which made this possible. I wish they had put an actual baseball diamond there myself.
Speaking as a baseball fan and an historian, this is insanely cool. You guys do a great job bringing local history to life.
This video was a home run.
Yes agree
As a Long time L A Dodger Fan. This was a Fun look at the History of the L A Stars. I didn't know that the Stars went on to San Diego. I did know that Ted Williams played for them. This was a Fun Adventure. Hope to see more of San Diego and other Oddity Odyssey. Thanks . 🕶👍
You two did a great job showing how Lane Field is being honored still. This Padres fan thanks you!
The point of preserving history is so well made here. Loved the scavenger hunt diamond and the blue skies, not to mention the hilarious banter in the car!!! Thanks for the fun trip.
Done ✅ Watching Drew with all of those Baseball Jokes 😂 ❤you two!!
Another interesting video! The bad baseball jokes and puns were priceless! 🤣
Good one! As a baseball fan/history guy love little known baseball deep dives.
Thanks.
Very cool history
Not only is Lane Field a great find, Drew and Bethany, but I loved your baseball humor! 👍 ❤ 👍
Thank you, Noah!
It is amazing how you find these unique places. This is why I love your videos.
They still have the home plate to comisky park in Chicago. When I go to the Sox games I always go there to remind myself that this is where the best baseball players from the 1900s to the 1990s played together. So much history in that parking lot.
"I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger... Then it hit me!"
One of my favorite Dad Jokes.
It's been over 50 years since I was in Diego. I love your videos!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you!
The baseball jokes WERE JUST SO EXCELLENT Thank you!!! Had to watch several times!😆
Haha, glad to hear the jokes didn't get old!
As a fan of bad puns and jokes, this was over the top. Being a baseball fan, this video was a home run.
Perfect place for a baseball stadium. A nice ocean breeze even on the hottest summer day.
Love the baseball jokes, and you both keep straight faces😊. Very cool park! Thanks for introducing it to us.
Ted Williams played for the Red Sox but he was a San Diegan and went to Hoover High he’s pretty celebrated here considering people think he’s the greatest hitter ever.
"Anger gets you more than fear"
*....PLAY BALL!*
Well! I must say, this video is in a league of its own! Well done, you guys. Slick and well-edited with incomparably witty baseball puns and humor, none of which were particularly cringeworthy (except perhaps "I had a ball with you today . . .". but that may have just been a poor 'delivery'!).) Your foray into baseball trivia in downtown San Diego is much appreciated and well-timed with the imminent return of another season for the Boys of Summer. Keep up the good work.
When I was a kid, I had a little book of Baseball trivia which claimed-a bit tongue in cheek-that Ted Williams hit the longest homer in baseball history. From Lane Field it landed in a railcar going to Los Angeles!
When I read that I didn't live in San Diego or know anything about it, but it just stuck in my head. I moved here as an adult.
When they talked about this project about 10 years ago, it was a weird light bulb moment that "ohhh that's exactly what I read about in that book!"
This video was a real "touchdown"!
What a great story. My Dad used to take me to Westgate Park to see the Triple A Padres. They tore it down to make room for Fashion Valley Mall. Too bad they didn't do something similar there.
Funny thing: Westgate used to flood. Now: Fashion Valley floods.
You guys are so clever. This was a really neat episode. Love your baseball word play, lol. :)
Padres should have used this in their opening day show ... would have been a Hit !!!
Great story for people like me who love baseball history, gracias 👏👏👏👏
Super cool! I’m glad it’s been remembered.
I grew up in San Diego, and when I lived downtown for about a year or so I used to run these bases if they were on my route during my runs.
👏 Another awesome episode!
Love this in SD keep up the content! Can’t wait till you guys hit 100k ❤
Thanks for joining us for the SD episodes! ❤
❤❤”OO” 😊 Thxs in the past but not forgotten ✌️💙
Great video! Love your dynamics and well played.
I miss San Diego. It's my home town,. Played all my little league there. Chula Vista little league on the dodgers played in imperial beach tee ball on the bees and minors on the Yankees lol
As a kid my dad used to take me to Westgate Park ..AAA Padres(Cincinnati) ~ later in the games when the breeze turned around you could smell the dude ranch next door 😋
"Get your Red Hots, Peanuts & Crackerjacks."
Thanks again. Your videography is amazing!
Love you guys, Happy Easter.
Very cool! Love when people preserve history like this ❤
This is cool. Reminds me of the Diamond of Shea Stadiums spirit in the parking lot in Citi Field.
I was just in San Diego and walked past this on the other side of the street and had no idea! Next time I go down to SD will check this out.
Love being a benchwarmer to your adventures
Hey what the hell. I’m from San Diego and never knew about this. I wish San Diego did more of this. Now I know why it’s called one field!
I really like remembering what was there before.
I saw my first Padres game at Westgate Park, my first Aztecs games at Peterson gym and the Aztec Bowl and my first Chargers game in Balboa Stadium.
Nice intro and added special touch with the baseball 😄😄😄
What a great video minus your fact on the hotel build was 2018, not 2012, for that build the layout was required by the contractor for layout. I’d say home run, but on that note ground rule double! Awesome videos love them!
I already told my sister, who moved to San Diego 2 weeks ago, that we are going to go to all the places on this Unique San Diego Series. Crazy that this was a baseball field before. I would have never known this if I walked past the building. Your channel is the best!
Ah, yes! You mentioned wanting to check off a few things when you get the chance to visit her! We probably mentioned this before, but highly recommend Regents Pizzeria. Hope you guys have a great time!
@@OddityOdysseys Can confirm that Regents is a great place. I would say that in the past 15 years San Diego has become a wonderful pizza town so there are great places, and I didn't see your videos but Bronx Pizza is kind of a must-try for new people to town. It was the first real pizza by the slice kind of place here, opened in the 90s.
the amount of times ive passed by this and didn't know that it was a diamond is crazy
Thank you for that, my Dad and his aunt had season tickets for the padres in the 50s.
Great job guys! I had no idea this existed and have likely walked past it s bunch of times.
That was very entertaining. Thanks.👍
I stayed at that hotel in 2019 for Comic Con and I saw that home plate on the corner. I was like how cool is this. No one else I was with knew how amazing it was, lol.
Glad you were able to see it for yourself!
Another amazing beautiful video grasias ❤
As a native San Diegan, I knew about the hidden baseball diamond, but I didn't know the history.
I just found my next adventure here in San Diego...thanks for the video!
❤
I found you guys recently and watched through all your videos. Love the channel. I can't say I ever wanted to visit LA until I watched your stuff. The quality of your videos are great. I can't believe you don't have more subscribers.
It's probably been asked before, but in case you hadn't heard of it. I'd like to see a video on Cerro Gordo ghost town from you two. It's in the mountains East of Death Valley. I think it would fit into your video style nicely.
Hey Nathan, thank you for your kind comment! We definitely have Cerro Gordo on our list. There is another ghost town that we visited recently that we plan to share with everyone soon. 😊
@@OddityOdysseys Looking forward to it!
You guys are so good. Time for the pros!
Ted Williams was born in San Diego never played for them. He played his whole career for the Boston Red Sox and was the greatest hitter to ever live.
Actually, Williams played for the minor league San Diego Padres in the 1936 & 1937 seasons. In December, 1937, Williams was sold to the Red Sox for $35,000. (Source - Wikipedia)
Fair enough.. I never watched the entire video to be honest. Never knew San Dan Diego Padres were a minor league team as I’d say 99.9% of people do not know that. Most people only know them as the team they are today in the MLB. Ted Williams is a legend in Boston.
@@thefourfourclub - The Padres joined the Pacific Coast League in 1936, after moving from Hollywood and changing names (per video). The PCL was founded in 1903, which included, among other teams, the Los Angeles Angels. MLB didn't arrive on the west coast until 1957 & '58.
There was another Hollywood Stars team in the PCL and I was taken to some of their games. They played in Gilmore Stadium in the Fairfax area of L.A. I believe that Gilmore, who made his money with oil and gasoline, owned the club and the stadium. They also moved 1957, the year before the Dodgers came to L. A. I don't know of any park or recognition of the Stars. Thank you for the video.
That was a totally a great idea that engineers did this
You really threw us a curve with this one.
🤣🙌
Well done! 🎉
Dude, when I visited San Diego, that was the hotel I stayed in that was in right field. It took us about an hour to figure it out but we ended up finding home plate
this is cool .. im gonna be in SD in a few months .. im gonna check this out
The actual locations of the original bases and plate would have been about 147’ northeast of the markers. When the park was built instead of putting them in the buildings (where they would have ended up) they recreated them in a different location as a commemoration to the stadium. Home plate is actually about 20’ north east of 2nd base in the park. Good video though.
Cool video. Sad to see some people (apparently) chipped some pieces off the home plate statue.
Hey! If you ever make it out to Mall if America the home plate for the old Minnesota twins is inside where it used to be, and a chair is mounted on a wall from the old stadium that represents the furthest home run that was hit there!
Good spot to add to the Oddity list!
This is neat. I worked with the SDUT on a story at Glenner Town Square (a day care center for adults with dementia) and how they're making a 1/15 scale Wiffle ball court of Lane Field. I never knew about the original field and I used to work right across the street sometime ago.
The baseball jokes were very well played.
Excellent video, as always…
Shout out to San Diego legend Ted Williams
next time im at petco park ill stop by!
How cool. 👍
I've walked over 1st base here numerous times and never realized it was 1st base!
Very cool video 😊
A real gem of an episode (gem...diamond...get it? 🙂). I'm not old enough to have seen a game at Lane Field, but I did see the Padres play at Westgate Park in the early 60s. Did you by any chance visit the Top Gun "Sleazy Bar scene" filming location at KC BBQ when you were there?
It was a hit!!
Awwww baseball history 😌
Its baseball season and Goooooo Angels
Have been by there many times didn't know it had been a ball field.
You guys seem to be reviving the Marx Bros too.. 👏🏼👍🏼
They sure slided into that video
Great vlog. I don't think you could play a game of baseball. Too close to the buildings. You could have a wiffle ball game though. Get kids together and host a game. But then again, the field is too close to traffic. I love that the hotel owners put that remembrance into the area.
Nobody could hit a ball that far
My father pitched briefly for the PCL Padres. His nickname was Dutch. Unfortunately he popped his shoulder warming up on the mound and that was it. Thank you for this video. I wish he was alive to see it. ⚾
We tip our hats to Dutch! We would have been honored for him to have seen it. Thanks for watching. 😊
@@OddityOdysseys wow. That was nice. ♥ ⚾
Looks like someone took a bat to "home plate".
Another error free episode!
It would be nice if you guys did some of San Diego's gay history.
Hillcrest used to not be the gay part of town, it was scattered all over. For example, The Brass Rail was once downtown and then moved uptown and is now at it's 3rd location, but it's the oldest operating gay bar in San Diego ( I think, since 1937 or so).
Do those markers light up at night?
First time on the channel
Cute couple
How about another pacific coast league team at the other wrigley field in south central la home of the original la angels 😉
What if home plate in modern baseball was just a stone pillar sticking out of the ground.
Would certainly make the games more interesting, haha!
San Diego studios where you at with putting lane field in the game #sds
It’s not really hidden is it ?
Am I the only one that gets Ted Bundy and Ted Williams confused?
I keep thinking Ted Bundy played for the padres.
Too douchy but pretty sweet we would have taken a couple of gloves at least
Way too cool. Let's trade lives.
Great video. I love obscure baseball trivia. I live in Washington State. For one season we had a MLB team called the Piolets. (They moved and became the Brewers.). The stadium that they played in is long gone. A Lowe's hardware store is currently located in that spot. They have a historical marker where home plate was located in the old baseball stadium. Useless but fun trivia IMO.
Very cool, thanks. Would've been a classic if you knocked the camera out of her hand.
