“It’s cold and lashing it down, what shall we do today”? “Oh, we can go start that old Volvo. I was going to do it tomorrow but it’s going to be nice and sunny and I want to sit out with a beer not faff on with that old thing”! “Yeah ok”.
I had a loan of one of these for 3 weeks back in 1980. With its straight six 3 litre engine, automatic transmission and an interior akin to a Victorian gentleman’s club, it remains my favourite Volvo to this day and in the top 5 cars I have ever driven.
It would be hard not to love one of the thin bumper 164 models as the front end is so elegant. Not many of the 164s here in the states were equipped with the fog lights, they just had covers over the openings. I would love to find a really nice 164 and make it a daily driver. Such a simple and robust design and added torque from the 6 cylinder engine makes it a joy to drive. Thanks for posting the video!
I have two Peter a 2003 s40 sport lux. Very well appointed car complete with a sat nav and colour screen very period but it works. The hu1205. And I have a 2007 s60 d5 which is like a armchair to drive in no hurry to get rid
There's no 160s near me in the US. These are so cool. They have such an interesting look to the front that makes it unique but it is still undeniably Volvo.
I have a 1983 240. It's a fantastic car, but I like the 160 series more. I like the Amazon more than the 160 and of course, the 1800 above all. I would love to get a 164, but they are so rare in the US. The 240 is still so popular that a guy at the Volvo dealership near me told me their biggest competition is their own model, the 240.
I can see that the designer of the 164 must have been inspired by the Vanden Plas 4 Litre R from the 1960's. The styling of the front end looks very similar to the British car.
I think this 164 model is from 1971/72, aproxm.... my first Volvo was the 244 DL by 1974, but with the massive telecope-front-back-profile.... and in 1988 I was driving my nice comfortable 760 GL TD, with 112 HP, in White..... THE SWAN an all streets... ....
I sure hope that the 164, is/was restored, when that model came, it has certain elegance ,distinguished looking features that make it so unique to the 164, of course the 164, was replaced by the 240/26].model, what I could never figure out is why with the 260, they had put in a newer, slower 6cylinder engine, which resulted being terrible for the 260 model when they could have used the same 6 cylinder that is in the 164.
Woow, love it! Had not less than 3 164E in a row back in the days, "most power for the buck" at the time. Those old Volvo engines...have a relative with a 142 -68 by his country house. Outside year around, always start. I hope you guys at least let her have some fresh oil and plugs prior start up? Any plans to get her fixed up? Way to go Volvo!
This may be Volvos best design ever. Not really sure what the plans are for the Volvo. When I go back over there I ask him, and shot another longer test run video. No oil/plugs change but needs to do for sure.
Like the woody Allen movie where he starts the vw bug that has been stashed in a cave for 200 years...starts immediately...also a funny jet car in that movie...tubes on the roof!
@@NorthernFlight Tack, såg denna video först 2023. Gissade på 1969 eftersom bälten saknades i baksätet. Denna första årsmodell saknade även servostyrning som standardutrustning. Det blev tungstyrt att fickparkera med en B30 under huven!
It may not have started, but it must have been turned over regularly in that climate. I live in a similar northern evergreen forest where anything left unturned for 3 or 4 years is seized.
30 years? If that car would not have been started in 30 years, it must have have had oil changes and continous crank, otherwise the engine parts would have corroded together.

This video brought me back to 1975. It was in Indonesia and I was 7 yo when my dad owned this car. Thanks !

What a little gem. I'd love to have that in my barn.
Didn't expect less from an old volvo.
Worth restoring for sure!
Nice day for a startup!
Roope Peltola 30 years was to much no time to wait for a sunny day ; )
It was raining since 30 years and they wouldn't wait any longer.
Love volvos. I was a master tech at a dealer from 1985 to 2002 and loved it. I miss working on them.

Zero smoke now that’s a Volvo
Love those cars! Drove one back in the 80's and wanted one ever since. Hard to find here in Canada and when you find them they're not cheap!
Same in sweden
Many volvos for purchase in US :)

Great touring Volvo during blizzards 😅
That model is actually finer than 240. Personally, I like Amazon and then 160 series.
