- Right it has been a long time since I made aRUclips video since this year's school year for my school was totally hectic...but finals are over and I am finally able to go back to making videos. Anyways lets move on to the car, in this video we'll be looking at the Volvo 164 specifically the 1973 Volvo 164 E and in this video we will be looking into the general details on this luxury sedan. Sure Volvo is one of those luxury brands that is not as well-known as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, or Jaguar but their cars do pack a punch to those more well-known brands.
By the way we have our own Instagram account so please do check us out at:

We do hope you will enjoy this brief review on the Volvo 164 and I'd be surprised if you did, please leave a like, comment down below even add some additional information if you will and please remind us of any misinformation in the video, and have a little civilised discussion about the car. And even better please consider subscribing to replenish my extremely low self-esteem.

In 1996 my parents got a 1969 bordeaux red 164 automatic which they had imported from Munfors, Sweden. The same year we went on holiday near the area the car came from, but on the way in Hamburg we got stuck in heavy traffic and my dad rammed the gearbox in Park while still rolling which resulted in a big clang noise, nothing more, at least at first glance. During our stay the starter desided to kill itself, so we ordered a new one from Germany and it became my first repair job at 12 years of age, yaay. On the way back and already very close to home my dad wanted to be home asap so he floored it for over an hour on the Autobahn, doing the quoted top speed of 180 kph easily, but then the gearbox failed quite dramatically leaving a long trail of oil behind. The broken park-part destroyed the gearbox inside, all the gears were toast. The car was then towed and a specialist converted it to a 4 speed manual. After a few years my parents sold it and it was then fully restored to mint condition. Years later we came across it in a town near us and we made some good conversation with the new owner, remeniscing an so on.
That car left a big mark on me, in beauty and elegance, I'll never forget it.
Btw, since last month there's a new old Swede on my parents' driveway: a grey 940 Estate 2.0 Turbo with only half a million kms on the clock. After I fixed all the neglected maintenance it drives like a dream, again.
Happy days, again!
Very nice video. I purchased a 1974 164E in November 1975 for $3700. It was the car driven by the mother of the dealership’s owner, and had been driven less than 4000 miles. The Volvo advertisement at that time was: A civilized car in an uncivilized world. Referring to the harsh weather condition.
I had two big bumper 164s in the 80's. First a 164E which was stolen by gypsies. They picked it up in broad daylight with crane on a lorry, it took then two minutes and it was gone. They sold it to a scrap yard for the metal value, £10. Couple of years later I bought a 164TE. The most wonderful I ever owned. It was stolen from outside my brother house in the middle of the night, again by gypsies. This time they got £25 because the price of scrap metal had gone up. From memory they made only five hundred right hand drive 164TE making it a rare car. I still have the service book and 8track I took out and replaced with a cassette player. When I went to Scotland for a holiday in it driving round the highland mountains I calculated I got ten miles per gallon. Just driving around London for work could be £100 a week in 4star petrol (price in 80's).
A good narrator having a good communication skill with clear voice to please the audience.....Well done buddy......
This video brings me back to 1973 where my Swedish MD used a Volvo 164 Black for his business activities in Malaysia. I still remember how stylish the car was and admired the luxury leather interior for a top executive. The driver Ahmad always kept it in sparkling clean showroom condition park at the Office main entrance car porch..... By-the-way I worked for Ericsson Telephone in Malaysia a Swedish Telecommunication Manufacturing company way back in 1972 in Shah Alam ...
I had a 1972. Yes, there were a lot of changes in 1973. The car really surprised a lot of people with how smooth it operated and how solid and upscale it felt. The 144s were nice but felt different, not as luxurious. The 164 was a nice luxury car.
164E -74 was my first car. Still remember that B30, endless torque almost. It was delivered by Volvo Penta so it's basically a boat engine.
The torque point is very low at 2500 rpm. In my memory, it was for trailer hauling, with no need to revolve the engine too high, and is easier to drive in town. But it can be because it was a boat engine?
I had a 144GL with D-Jetronic, the shop manual showed me that for every market the tuning was different. What do you think?
My first car was a 164E. I wish I still had it.😢
Very cool, the 164 -73 is in my opinion the best looking of the whole series. Dad of a friend of mine had one from new, ice blue metallic/ black interior - a very nice car in period.
My first car was a 1974 164E in the exact same color and trim. My dad and I even converted it back to carbies, like this owner has (the fuel injection was primitive). You forgot to mention the 4 wheel disc breaks including incredibly powerful 4 piston calipers on the front. They were incredible breaks, that were popular for use on race cars. Great review, great memories!
My father had a 1973 model 164. It was light blue metallic with black leather interior and black carpets. I remember the leather had a pleasant smell and you could hear the clock ticking. The example in the video appears to have relatively modern wheels. My father's 164 had the standard wheel (like in the 144) with the central small hubcap held in place with one central screw. The 164 added a circular stainless steel wheel trim which push fitted over the rim. My father's car didn't have the chrome trim around the headlight and lacked aircon. It had a sliding steel sunroof worked by a window wiper type handle but no aircon. Overall it was my favourite of all the cars my father ever owned. I even got to drive it when I was just 17 which was quite a thrill. I also think the 1973 model was the best looking 164 as the 74 model added huge bumpers.
I agree with Bob below. Great job with this video, one of the best reviews I've seen on YT. Keep it up! 👍
Great car and a very well-done review! I appreciate your efforts and think you can go far!
Reminds me of my highschool prom of 1971. My best friend's father was a college professor and had just bought one of these (it was dark blue). We went to the prom in it -- all 4 of us. I had exaggerated it to my date mainly to inflate my freind's ego and she gave a visible sign of "Is this modest thing what you were talking about?" I will never forget that humiliation as I knew it was too small and plain looking to be impressive in the US. It had none of the typical things large american cars had = V8 power everything I don't think it had AC -- nothing not even an automatic transmission. The leather seats were the best thing.
No car is uninteresting to me so the video was useful to relive that embarrassing episode.
Omg!! I had this same car it was a 1975 year and I got it after it had been sitting up for years and repainted and put a decent amount of money into repairs but was worth it. Wish I never got rid of it.
I had a big bumper 164TE in the 70s - lovely car with a surprising turn of speed. Ice cold A/C and a ferocious heater. superblu comfortable leather seats, a strict 4 seater.
Great review, thank you!! Greetings from Sweden
Well done. Good review. Clear and informative.
production quality has improved drastically since the last video which mind you, was quite some time ago anyways. props up to you mate 👏
Yeah thanks mate
A very professional review of one of my favourite cars
Hmm. Not 164E. The 164E had electronic fuel injection. The manual gearbox was 4 speed with overdrive.
Wing mirrors were swapped out for door mirrors. Protruding door handles changed to recessed. Column change automatic gear changed swapped for tunnel mounted. The driver door side location of the handbrake, I believe, was moved to the tunnel too.
Good vid, nice presentation. Interesting to see the 164 in bit unusual setting, where is this? PH?
Enjoyable review. Thanks.
Absolutely loved your video
Very happy you enjoyed it 🙏 thanks for the comment!
164E ….. but fitted with twin carbs 🤔… in my opinion a great improvement
beautiful Volvo with nice wheels
In 1975 my neighbour took me to school in 164, thing that stood out then was flashing fasten seat belt light, when no one wore swat belts.
Dang. That was awesome! Move over Doug M in San Diego, this kid has got it going on. Ha. An excellent auto review. Well done EN.
Nice one Ezer👍🏻👍🏻
Great overview ❤
In terms of sophistication the Volvo 164 does not quite reach the level of the Mercedes at the time. But in terms of hard wearing quality it does, and then some. In terms of comfort the Volvo seats were much better than the Merc, the interiour looked more luxurious. Anyway your review is great, you are a natural talent, hope you keep it up!
It is already a standard that Mercedes has a higher level than Volvo, but for Volvo to reach something that could quite rival Mercedes at the time was indeed astonishing. Anyways thanks for your comment!
@@keepinitezzy I agree, and in terms of value for money it could be argued that Volvo was better. Also better rust protection, old Volvo's usually has less rust than old Mercs, probably also to do with swedish steel being top notch. In terms of long lasting mechanicals Volvo is at least equal with Mercedes.
Agreed, the Mercedes a neighbor had felt a bit more sophisticated. I feel the ride quality was similar, maybe a bit nicer in the Volvo at the time, though. But the Mercedes felt quieter and more upscale. Of course, the Mercedes had the image more than just about anything other than a Rolls Royce or Jaguar.
With many Mercedes of this era, heated rear window, a, sunroof and many other things were paid for extras; my 164e had all these things as standard. I believe that this era of Volvo was, in many, many ways superior to Mercedes.
It’s just wonderful
Such a beautiful car
The first years this model had a lower shaped bumper in the middle, in front! Not just an ordinary bumper.
Gorgeous car. Expensive looking, and yet a low-profile vehicle.
For people who didn't like to show-off.
Good taste, great design -- too bad that the brand has lost its forner charme.
Excellent review of a gorgeous car thank you 👏👏👏👏🇬🇧💯🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Thanks for your comment, glad you liked it!
I baught a '73 164 E in '77 , left by a senior police officer when he baught a new car. Serviced befor used cost me lot as they changed all injectors with plug point, oil and filters. Then there was no problem untill I dumped it as scrap. It ahd excellent performance but it cost a lot. It was fun to give hard time to Tranzam, String Ray BMW
You forgot the different types of wheels/rims, the 164-E you have there are Volvo alloy rims of the period,,then you have the steel rims, with center caps, hubcaps held on with a Phillip's screw
can u please make a review of Peugeot 405?thanks
Great video of a very nice car!
A Volvo 164 could also be equipped with a 4 speed manual + overdrive. (M410) Great video!
Yes you got a bit of a lurch when that overdrive engaged and disengaged.
We had a 74 light metallic blue with the thicker bumpers and same interior color as this video.
i like the older Volvo 164 with the curved frontbumper more, that looks more stylish that the straight bumper of the later 164. that was interesting to see the difference in the comparison in this video. i like the stationwagon form of that, the Volvo 165, thats in my opinion a bit more the Volvo than the 164 and i dont mean only the bigger room inside of the stationwagon form, its more what i think a Volvo is supposed to be for practicality for a family or for a single person who wants to go camping and sleep in the car for a night.
I owned 5⃣ 164s. Great cars
Nice car! Well done! //Peter
the 164 is a really good looking car, and that is not because i'm a massive volvo freak and currently own 2 volvos and one is a classic. it really is a super sexy vehicle. there are 3 other volvos that I think are cooler (amazon wagon, pv445 duett and the car I own, a P1800ES)
NIce video! My 1973 164E has fuel injection. Maybe because it was sold in the U.S.A.?
Great video of 164👍🇸🇪
3 litre? In the UK it was a 2.7 l, clearly based on the 1,800 cc motor.
The 140 and 164 series with the small taillights are simply more elegant.
That....I can't argue with that actually. The old taillights do look a lot more classy
I started working at the Volvo Plant in Chesapeake Va in 1976. We still had a bunch of these on the lot. They drove ok. Just not my taste. As Volvo's go I like the P1800.
Wow nice car only 83000 km same as new but something is wrong E sould have injection engine but this one have carburators ?
do volvo 760 GLE turbodiesel
A superb car. I've been looking for one but they are very difficult to find in good condition. Spare parts availability is not very good either.
Finally.... He has uploaded after a year long hiatus
Yes...sorry for the wait the school year was full of projects so I had to put RUclips aside
Wonderful 😊
-Gear box with manual + overdrive 5 speed was also option
Soo nice car
I had a US 1974 in the 80s. The B30 was a great motor while the BW 35 tranny - not so much.
Volvo and Mercedes had the Safest cars long before any other manufacturers chose to make them so or were legislatured to make so.😉
A B30E with carburators🤔,thats must be B30A then, its was to type of injektion in the 164, Electronic, and Mecanic of type k-jetronic
For some reason..... All Volvos look good
My favorite volvo is the xc90
I'd have to agree to that, to be honest I'm a person who prefers simplicity, as in...I want a car that looks great...but not too flashy, like Ferraris or Lamborghinis, and Volvo...I think is exactly that, a car that is simple, yet amazing
If I had my licence still I would buy this as a last classic car I have volvos before well worth having maybe tank like but the safety built into them was brilliant the models I have are 145 244 265 440 x2 all good cars 😊
Volvos owned a 360 3 240s both manual and auto's and my last a 960 only rust i found was the 240s front window in the corner poor drainage worked for Volvo dealers in the parts dept. ,the 360 was a great little car gearbox in the rear axle torque tube,, Owned THEM in AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND 'VOLVO I ROLL
=VOLVO I ROLL
They may be boxy, but they're still good!👍👍
Nice video but anyone who is truly into cars would want to see it being driven and hear the engine running at the very least.
My dad had this car in the 70s
In Europe you could also get a 165 wagon. I think they made a mistake not marketing a.more powerful.wagon in North Ametica.
One was made. You mean the 145
I would say currently there are Audi, Mercedes, BMW, and to some degree Lexus in terms of luxury 1st tier brands globally. Then you have everyone else. Jaguar is no longer a player in this arena. They do not even have a flagship any longer.
That is NOT a Volvo 164E, it has the wrong B30 motor. The B30E has an electronic injector system (160hp DIN), this one is a dual Zenith Stromberg CD175-2CD carburetor (130hp DIN). So either is the motor the wrong one or the badge at the rear is. No way is that motor producing 160hp (DIN). But a very nice-looking car and a great video.
I did own a 1969 Volvo 164 with serial number 197 engine number 172 and then of course fabric interior. I did miss the sound of the B30 so no I only own a Volvo C303 civilian still with a B30 but a better camshaft for its lower torque range (only 115hp DIN). I doubt anything can stop it with its portal axels and gearbox-mounted winch...
Which he also points out in the video
Gg vids zer
Thank you bang udin
OMG, Doug De Muro has procreated...
He knows a lot about Volvos for a twelve year old boy.
VOLVO. My first car was a 164E.
Volvo allso offered a a 4 speed manual gearbox with an electrical overdrive
Yes, and people love to click that switch on the shifter knob without using the clutch.
Also you forgot to mention that Volvo is big in rally*s race*s
I see...to be honest I just knew that Volvo quite that big of a reputation in rallying, and also about the different rims. Many thanks for this info.
gg zer mantap
danke bang
That Volvo comes from Holland 🙂
Volvo answer to e class merc.
Nice video , pity about the bullshit pop ups that ruin it !
Mercedes is that a car?
its not luxury in normal countries like mine and even in a poor country like north korea until now operated as city taxi fleet
wow. who thought you english
Its not to be compare to Mercedes its not the same solid made
No, it's better!
The B30 was not the best engine if you compare whit Mercedes engines
also all body is not at the same level as Merc otherwise you are blind sorry@@bobjohnson205
@@bjorn2290 You've been reported! Take care.
