Makes me want to cry. My first car as a 17-year-old. I had a 1971 that I bought in 1975 for 3700.00 Canadian dollars. Had 3 part-time jobs after school and saved every penny to buy my beauty. Absolutely the best car I ever owned.
My first Volvo was a 164, white over pale blue leather, auto with column shift. Great cruiser, no issues at all, apart from keeping that grill clean It took me over an hour each time!
I had a 164E Series 2 in the early eighties. It too was first owned by a doctor, he's right about it driving like a Rolls Royce and people looking at the car. It was stolen from outside my home by gypsies one afternoon. They picked it up with a crane on a lorry and drove off with it. It was sold for £10 to a scrape yard that immediately crushed it. I found the wheel hubs and other trim at the scrape yard a day later. When the insurance paid out I bought a 164TE Series 2 several months later. This was also stolen, this time from outside my brothers house in the middle of the night. I found the engine and boot lining in a different scrape yard a few days later. That got £25 for that one.
I had the chance to buy a metallic blue example (1 owner) in great shape many years ago (mid 1990's), from an old lady who was a friend of my family. I turned it down and have regretted it ever since. Such a nice motor.
Just lurking (enviously) from across the pond. These are rarer than hens teeth over here, especially the manual + overdrive ones. I had the pleasure of owning one in the 1980's back in S. Africa. Fantastic car. A little thirsty, but hey... worth every fill-up. Thanks for posting the video and helping me break the 10th Commandment "Thou shalt nor covet thy neighbour's Volvo 164".
How many of those Volvo 164 you have in The uk. Here in sweden there are some of them. But not so many. Really Nice car you have. Old Volvos are The best cars ever build
You are right. I bought my first Volvo in 1967. It was a 1961 122 S Amazon. It had 55,000 miles on it and I paid $500 US for it. I sold it after college with 155,000 miles on it and got $500 trade in. I am on my 10th Volvo now and own 3: 1985 245 Turbo, 1997 Volvo 850 R, 1998 V 70 Cross Country Turbo and love them all. At 71, I don’t think that I will be buying any more cars.

That was the cap used on all of the Volvo’s from the 60’s. My 1961 122S had that same Crome locking cap. But my 1971 145S has the first flap. Now on my 10th Volvo. The old professor
I own a 1970 model in nearly perfect condition since 10 years and I must say, what you told about the peoples reaction on that car is definitively wrong! No one will turn his head after a 164.
vierfachreihensechse so im a liar ??? i drove through london last week and loads of people looked and stopped me in fact and home in my village its the talking point when i have drove it...you keep up the negatine comments i will keep up smiling in my volvo :-)
Actually , I own this car and wherever I go in it, it recieves no end of admiration ? People comment about in droves :) It is a lovely machine :) Strong , reliable and drives like a car that feels indestructible:)

Are you sure that's the "original" petrol filler cap? I thought they came with just a simple twist on/off colour coded cap.

the twist ones i'm thinking of had a coachline grip in the molding to match the car, not hidden behind the flap you speak of

@GARY GRAY I test drove a '75 back in the fall of '79 and managed to destroy it in less than an hour - I spray-washed the engine! lol
