I remember seeing something where basically, streaming services will make shows that have representation like these shows to hook those audiences who don’t have other shows to watch into their service, and then cancel the shows for money to use on shows for wider audiences and hope those audiences they hooked originally stay for the wider stuff because they already paid or are hoping for more represemtation

I'm so sad they canceled "i am not okay with this" especially since it was such a cliff hanger at the end. It's crazy to me how they keep making shitty movies like the kissing booth series and things like that, but the second they come out with an actual good show it gets canceled :/

Anne with an e was a big surprise for me, I wasn’t interested at first because I thought it would be too childish. But after I’ve seen all the reactions over its cancellation and the petitions, I finally tried to see for myself.
And it was wonderful, so beautiful and well written. All the characters evolve and feel like real people. The story is engaging and you really fell in love with Anne by the end of the show. One of the best show I watched, a warm fireplace in a dark room of overly dramatic and sad shows. An ode to life and imagination. It talks about a lot of important subject and do it so well. I can’t recommend enough!

(If you find Anne annoying at the beginning push through, it’s part of who she is but she does tone down as it goes on) I for one didn’t find her annoying; I think it was nice to see a bright young girl with a mind full of stories and big words, made me think a little about myself when I was younger 😂 anyway glad my comment made someone watch it and hope you like it !
Yeah it such a warm tone series, a soft spot after watch other tense series and one of the series that make you feel you grow with the characters.

@@trinaq yep that show was just starting to get good also. Netflix loves to cancel shows after one season before they give it a chance to even get viewers. Like after a week if it's not pulling record-breaking numbers in the views they cancel it.
they literally screwed the entire cast & crew over. at least kathryn newton (the actress who played allie) has gotten booked and busy and is now in antman 3!
I wish the creators would just tell us the answer to what happened (like how they switched universes or whatever) since we’ll never get to find out through the show

Literally, when First Kill was cancelled I was so upset. It wasnt THAT good, but It was the representation we needed (a cringy teen drama). I had such high hopes for it, and not lesbians and non sapphics were shitting on it not caring that they were taking away our tiny pool of respresentation. Anyway yeah, ur essay sounds interesting haha
Everything Sucks was marketed completely the wrong way. I Am Not Okay With This took too many episodes to start its plot. Warrior Nun S2 simply wasn't marketed at all or at least hardly. With Imperfects, I'm pretty sure 99.9% of Netflix accounts never even heard of it, NO marketing at all. Anna with An E is the classic show that will have a niche but devoted fanbase, it was never going to do Stranger Things numbers but we need shows like that in the industry, it would have never been cancelled this soon if cable TV was still a thing.
In the end, Netflix never cared about these shows, no matter how good they were. They were throwing out stuff to get their representation number up, hoping they'd catch a hit show in the process

Sense8 actually got a series finale though, series don’t need to go on forever and a lot of cancelled show don’t get to have closure. I get it though, there was likely more the director and writers wanted to do with the concept.

I'd definitely recommend "I am Not Okay with This", "Anne with an E" or "Julie and the Phantoms." They all ended with sudden, exciting sounding cliffhangers, with but were abruptly axed. Hopefully they'll be brought back some day.

Everytime I remember Anne with an E being unnecessarily canceled I want to cry that show was too good for the fate it got
emphasis on Anne with an E for sure, awae is one of the best shows ever imo, the acting is phenomenal, the story is beautiful and a great combination of being of being loyal to the original story along with modernising it. It explores so many important topics in a very natural, sensitive way, that feels real and touching. I've still not forgiven its cancellation!

@@-NoNo. i never said it was a contest i was just pointing out that lesbian shows perform great but are always cancelled and are never promoted as much because it is a fact. and i am aware there are others that arent even considered especially the aroace spectrum however a romance show with aroaces doesnt exactly make sense coming from someone on the aroace spectrum which is where my point was. i would love to see a main character on the aro/ace spectrum and navigate that and learn however that would not be a romance show even if they had dated a few people, it would be a self discovery show.

Anne with an E was a literal masterpiece. A slow burning show for sure, but even the slow burn is made dramatic with Anne's flare for drama. It is a visually stunning show that tugs on your heart strings from the first episode to the last. I also think they do a good job of dealing with modern issues even though it is a period setting. Racism, sexism, bullying, the treatment of indigenous people, SA, socio-economical differences, abusive relationships, homophobia and death are all issues which get explored at depth. The characters feel like real people. I do not know a single person who has watched it without falling in love.
I think it was easy for the people who cancelled it to justify ending it where they ended it. I still don't think it should have ended but they could have ended it in worse ways for sure.
yeah. Still crushed it ended with some storylines not resolved but glad we at least got an ending that made sense and felt pretty satisfying all things considered. Do always wish we got a good ending for ka’kwet though.
the OA was a masterpiece. I usually really dont like shows like that, but that was amazing. It was heavy and confusing at times, but it made me want to figure it out.

It was so unique and brilliant. Thinking about its cancellation still gets me a bit heated tbh. Like Idk how anyone could see/know the season 2 ending and be like "Yeah, we should just cancel this and not see where it goes."

Sense8 quite literally changed the trajectory of my life like I think I was a bit too young to watch it (I watched it when I was like 13-14) and I was slightly traumatized by Whispers for a few years... but like I rewatched it during the pandemic and the plot, the representation, the characters are just everything to me. Like I was struggling with my sexuality since I was like 11-12 and I think it was one of the shows that just helped me feel comfortable about being in the closet and with myself in general.

I watched it at 17 and it has forever impacted the way I see humanity, love, and family. Got my first tattoo a week after I turned 18. It's says, "Amor Vincit Omnia". Which I'd never heard before the show but knew I wanted as my first tattoo as soon as I'd watched it
This was the series was a "mind blown" moment for me. I was so drawn to it for some reason. It's also just queer as hell. Love this series.
Sens8 really sold to me the idea of polyamor. I was iffy about it before, but that (and science) really made me a strong supporter (I'd say more than supporter since I now believe is the only logical thing for humanity as a whole, but let's go with supporter ahahah)
Me as a grown 33 year old woman is still pissed that Julie and the Phantoms got cancelled. It was such an amazing show and that cliffhanger was a rough way to end everything!

Anne with an E, I love. They have basically taken Anne of Green Gables but also added queer characters, POC characters and a subplot about the awful indigenous Canadian schools that the church ran. There is a bit of “white saviour” in there, but the characters they added are honestly all just great and really add to it. And (other than the main characters being a bit more accepting than you’d really accept olden day white people to realistically be) it doesn’t shy away from subjects like racism, sexism, homophobia and mental health issues/ trauma. Might not be your thing but for anyone who does like period dramas I would recommend.
i LOVE that show. i remember being absolutely crushed when it ended, but im grateful that at least we got the ending that we did. i do wish ka’kwet’s story could’ve been resolved and we could’ve seen that more before the end, but at least it wrapped up some of the main storylines-it felt rushed in some plot threads still being incomplete but other than that it was a pretty good finale all things considered.
FOR THE OA: Both episodes three and four is when it gets good. But episode four is when it starts picking up FAST. When i tell you i was shooketh. It's so good.

This is an unpopular opinion…but I never wanted The OA to have another season, the first one felt very well wrap up and I liked the idea of it being just Prairie’s imagination or maybe not(? It should’ve been one of those shows that has you talking about it and making theories on your own. That’s why I never saw season 2, I prefer to imagine that OA got to go back to his friends and rescued them or maybe she just died because it was all on her imagination, that she used as a defense mechanism after getting traumatized when they kidnapped her… Not knowing if it was true or not was what make the show so special to me, but I feel like season 2 just ruined that.

I know you haven't seen 1899. I also know it definitely wasn't for everyone. But I can definitely say it should have been in the first tier. Not only was it fantastically done visually wise. They really got an amazing international cast and everyone is speaking their own language during the show which adds up to the mystery and confusion throughout the story. The whole meaning and allegories hidden in it are just mindboggling. The creators really put a lot of love crafting it and it's just disrespectful for Netfilx to cancel it, especially after the success of Dark. This show was literslly just getting STARTED. I will never forgive them.

I LOVED Half Bad: The Bastard Son & Devil Himself series. World building was awesome. It had so much potential BUT Netflix did not promote it properly so nobody was aware of that show... Its a shame that it was canceled.

Same with the Imperfects! I didn't find out about either show until they were already cancelled. Netflix did absolutely nothing to promote them, and then cancelled them due to lack of numbers. If you don't tell anyone about the show, you can't expect them to watch it! It's so frustrating - there is so much potential with several of the shows on this list.
(although hard disagree on his ranking of the Gossip Girl reboot - the original was problematic enough - student with teacher being 'romantic end game' without the teachers being that obsessed with their students' sex lives to the point of stalking and recording them)

It wasn’t helped that it came out within a couple of weeks of Wednesday. It was such a contrast - half bad was darker, MILES better written and more interesting, diverse and compelling. Wednesday was so generic, half bad was fantastic and I loved the ot3 and really felt so connected to Nathan. They did cool things with subverting expectations and the way they showed time jumps without doing “10 months earlier” or “1 year later”. Just a great great show that was so overshadowed by Netflix failing to market it outside the uk and spending so so much money and time promoting Wednesday.
Watch "I'm not okay with this" you'll understand why everyone was angry it was cancelled, and you'll join them.

The OA starts picking up soon after she starts telling her story. I don't remember the specific episode but IT ALL CONNECTSS. Like it's so good.
I absolutely love the OA, still one of the most interesting things I've seen on Netflix, but if he didn't like the first two episodes I don't think he'd like it - it's a slow burn
Netflix has canceled a lot of shows I care about, but The Society is probably the one that gut punched me the most because of how much they pulled the rug out from under us, announcing the renewal, writing the second season, hyping up that they were about to shoot it, etc. I know there were external factors (obviously) outside of their control, but I just was so blindsided by that one. By the time they canceled some of the others I cared about, I was mentally prepared for it.
One of the BIGGEST reasons Anne with an e hit hard for me was the indigenous rep :(( it was so good it tackled things I haven’t seen in bigger shows 💔💔 and as an indigenous person it was nice too see.

Had recently watched Half-Bad and was so mad when I found out it was already canceled. Tho one show that I really hate being canceled (not on streaming tho) was Deadly Class.

You're in for a treat with Anne with an e for sure, even though period pieces aren't up your alley per say. It's THE only show that has made me cry and feel things MULTIPLE times per season alone because it's so heartfelt, melancholic, joyful and wonderous all at the same time, you feel the passion put into the production. The characters are compelling and charming, which makes you very attached to their joys and sorrows throughout. If I need to gain my faith in humanity, escape reality for a bit or find inspiration and motivation in Anne's imagination for my academics and love for art, I could watch this multiple times a year. Really sad it ended so soon, it deserves the top tier definitely.
I loved the midnight club! I was heartbroken when it was cancelled, but I absolutely loved mike Flanagan for sharing exactly what would have happened season 2. I wish more creators would do that so the fans aren’t left on infinite cliff hangers.

i will never get over julie and the phantoms but controversial opinion… i did not enjoy the society. the premise was really cool but a lot of the characters fell flat and i feel like drama over took the show so much that we never went back to the premise of the show until the last episode. campbell, sam & grizz carried ❤️

I think that season one was just meant to establish relationships and set up the dynamic of the cast before they got into the meat of it (how they got there, figuring how to get out, main plot stuff). Netflix did greenlight a season two, but ended up canceling it because of the pandemic. There was a ton of potential to expand the characters, but the writers probably got carried away with the drama and left everything for season two. That said, Sam and Grizz really did carry the show (Campbell scared me when I was younger LMAO.)

Slight side note: While First Kill did technically outperform Heartstopper, it also technically didn't do that. While it had bigger numbers, that was in watch numbers, not completion numbers. More people finished the whole season of Heartstopper than they finished the first season of First Kill within the first 30-ish days. Anyway, great list. I'm really upset that The Imperfects got cancelled because I just started it and I really like it.

Grand army was definitely heartbreaking to find out that it got cancelled. It came at such a great time during covid that it had so much potential for more development in a second season. Three other shows that made a huge impact on me when I found out they were cancelled were One Day at a Time, Daybreak, and Teenage Bounty Hunters that really weren’t given the broadcast they deserved. Smh.

"Gossip girl" had it coming. They ignored the critiques from viewers, basically told them to go f themselves. They leaned into everything annoying about the show. 🤨 "Raising Dion" advanced too fast, all those kids with power'. 😐. "First Kill" had a embarrassing budget. SMH
I fucking agree with what you say about the Gossip Girl reboot. The first season was one of the worst seasons I've ever seen in any teen drama. The show itself was a embarrassment to the original Gossip Girl in every way. Glad it got cancelled.
GOD I wish Mindhunter would get another season. I LOVE that show and they even touched on anxiety/mental health in men briefly and I think the end of season 2 really set up for more to come. Makes me sad.
1899 was really interesting, and I was excited to see where season 2 went. The ending of season 1 just doesn’t work without a follow up, so it’s a shame it was cancelled.

Some of the shows that I loved which got cancelled are: 1899, Everything Sucks!, Degrassi Next Class, Insatiable (I know it was problematic :( ), Babysitters Club, Diary of a future President (Disney+) and there are probably a lot more. Now I'm sad again. 😢😭

As a big fan of the books, an earlier shows, was so mad that 'The Babysitter's Club' was cancelled since it have been created for a new generation of readers since the books have been relaunched as graphic novels. It teaches you so much about how kids are different, families differ, responsibility and friendship.
The one I will never get over is The Get Down for me... The music, the aesthetics, the authentic shots of late-70's New York, the characters... It got cancelled in about the same week as Sense8 and man that was such a bummer of a week... Thankfully Sense8 got its movie to finish it off and I really wish The Get Down could have gotten that too, bcs god it really deserved it, that show was truly special

i can understand that the OA starts of a little slow but for what it becomes, it is SO ENTIRELY WORTH ITTTTTT. i would 100% put the society and the OA in my top two most missed shows. DO NOT SLEEP ON THE OA!!!!!!!!

I LOVED 1899 and it's definitely worth checking out. It has a divisive ending, so I think that's where the love/hate relationship comes from for some people. But the same people who made the Netflix show Dark (which is amazing and I highly recommend) made 1899, so I trusted them to have a good plan for where to take the show for the next season and I'm so sad we won't get to see it! Also, the multicultural/multilingual aspect was so unique and I wish we could see that in more shows.
im a the oa stan and tbh have like several theories about it and i think the first time you watch at least the first season youre like maybe "yeah okay" but rewatching it and having its season two is just so good for me it was like sense8 2.0 (and i do think during the 2015-2016 era of netflix shows like the oa and stranger things netflix was planning to have like this huge crossover event that was never able to happen for x y z reasons) but i highly recommend at least getting to season 2 if for no other reason then the characters of karim and zendayas parts
the society being cancelled still haunts me to this day 😭 but another show im heartbroken being cancelled is Freaks and Geeks, its an older show so I didnt watch it when it was cancelled but it had such good material and potential for second season and now I am forever wondering what would happen 💔
Freaks and geeks had it coming though because they spent most the budget on the intro song. Also James Franco abused and beat Busy Philips (who played his love interest) regularly on set.
the OA is so so so SO good oh my god it's phenomenal. It takes a second to really get into it, but my god it's so mind bending and breathtaking with its story. It definitely deserves another shot, and it DEFINITELY didn't deserve to be cancelled... especially since the creators were initially greenlit for FIVE seasons and they had everything plotted out already, only to get the axe
For me the sadest show, which got cancelled, is "the irregulars". Its such a good mysthic/19th century london/ sherlock holmes adaption, i really fell in love with the caracters and the storyline. Sadly the show is quite unknown :(

It still hurts to this day that Teenage Bounty Hunters didn't get a 2nd season especially ending on a cliffhanger. Also Santa Clarita Diet deserved another season.

Unfortunately for everything sucks, they casted a 15 year old and a 22 year old to be the main couple, so it had a lot of problems.

The OA was incredible, it’s been a long time since I’ve watched it so I can’t say for sure when it picks up but I heard a lot of people compare it to sense 8

Some of these shows I didn't hear about until after they were canceled, and it's hard to bring myself to watch them knowing they are just going to end abruptly. Even if it's a good show. I don't want to get my heart broken again by another canceled show.

first kill was also disappointing bc it was great to see a black protagonist in a supernatural drama get a proper romantic arc and have a black family shown in a positive light. felt like justice for bonnie from tvd.
I would give The OA at least an episode 3 watch. It is a slower show for a while (I'd say it really picks up pace around episode 6), but episode 3 you have the characters grappling more with how much to believe her and you get more into the rest of the characters lives, as well as unraveling the mystery of what happened to her in the past 7 years.

I was watching a video on Wednesday and one of the comments said something like "Wednesday wouldn't have blow up like it did if Netflix didn't cancel shows" At first i was offended but 5 minutes later I started thinking about it and was like damn true. Wednesday has a lot in common with I am not okay with this. If that show continued I think the boom for Wednesday would be softer.

Anne with An E is my favorite show ever and I was so upset it was cancelled!!! It’s so special. One of the rare films that are actually better than the books
I love the show, but definitely not better than the books. L.M. Montgomery is an amazing writer and it was written in a total different time in 1908, where the Canadian writer had to write under her initials, because women couldn't be writers.
@@elimo3901 Oh yeah I mean the series was great and what she did was very impressive. I do like her style of writing. I just found myself more captivated by the show then the series which for me is not common. And that could be because I don’t rlly like reading classics too. Both were good. :)
The fact that they cancelled "I am not okay with this" breaks my heart every time I remember that because it was one of my favourite shows when it first came out. And JULIE AND THE PHANTOMS?? That one pisses me off fr. Like it was a show that let me live in the Disney space while giving us substance. It was good and everyone involved knew it was. Netflix fumbled the bag hard on that one. I know that q-force had it coming (I won't argue on that) but damn it was such a fun show. I kinda wish we had more of it. I think the one that upsets me the most rn (you didn't talk about this) is Inside Job. They had renewed it for a second season already then recinded that renewal. And it was such a cleverly written show!

At least Sense8 was given an actual ending! The last episode of season 2 is like a full length movie and I feel like they wrapped up the show beautifully!
Okay, i actually don't remember how The OA changes in pacing, i think it was slow for most of it, but if the mystery catches you there, it's done, you are in. It's kind of that show that you hate or love, and if you have time you should check and find out. Season 2 is a bit different (with ZENDAYA being in it??) so yeah, it's wild
I loved The OA! I rewatched season 1-2 a few months ago. The first season is definitely a slow burn, but I thought it was totally worth it.
The combo of fantastical & sci fi elements in this show were stunning. The show explores many interesting ideas. Imo season 1 needed to be slow in order to properly introduce and flesh out those ideas. They are literally the foundation of the show. Therefore, I think people disliking the show is also due to the fact that they couldn’t accept those concepts. For example, I know some people hated the school scene at the end of season 1. I personally loved it.
Like you said the 2nd season was different. One of those differences was the faster pacing. Also the plot expands enormously. And we get introduced to Karim! There are a whole lot of other exciting plot lines that occur. Jason Issacs character was such a good antagonist!
@@janellelives5158 I was definitely one of those ppl who felt a little underwhelmed by the school scene on the first watch (appreciated it much more on the rewatch), but because everything else was quite intriguing and the storytelling was well done decided to stick w it for Season 2.
Season 2 had me hooked. There is still a small bit of hope that one day they’ll secretly drop season 3. It def belongs in the bring back now tier.
I never got upset about the Lovecraft Country cancellation cause I genuinely watched it thinking it was a limited series, from day 1 I thought it was a 1 and done type of show and the ending felt like a satisfying enough conclusion that they didn't need to do anymore
I can relate so much to what you said about The Order! I remember being obs essed and still kind of am, but I don't remember anything about it... Also, if you've watched "Dark" and loved it, you'd probably like 1899 too. It's got the same kind of mind-twisting and mind-boggling feel to it. A bit slow at the start (like Dark), but gets pretty insane later on.

I can't believe no one is talking about Chambers!? I literally cried for months and canceled my Netflix because of it. I am not okay with this was the last straw though. I miss so many of the shows I was watching but honestly not worth paying so much for them to most likely cancel them.

The OA is very high concept and it does require a slower entry I think, but it does start to pick up after the first few episodes. Of all of the netflix shows they've canceled that I've enjoyed, this one breaks my heart the most. They ended on a cliffhanger with an amazing premise for a new seasons, very 4th wall breaking stuff! It's a show that has genuinely changed me and it deserved to finish its story
