Netflix lost me when they renewed The Society for a S2, only for them to cancel it 2 weeks away from filming s2. While their crew was already setting up things in Massachusetts, and the cast had their flights booked. They found out online that Netflix canceled them. Netflix blamed Covid. I honestly think the Netflix executives don’t realize what doomed circle they created. Shows get cancelled all the time -> people stop starting to watch smaller, less known shows bc they will get canceled anyway -> show doesn’t meet the numbers -> gets cancelled ….
I for myself can genuinely say that my Netflix consumption has gone down A LOT due to this. I rarely just go and start to watch random shows, bc I don’t want to get invested in them.

That's not why they're getting cancelled. We're doing this because we know they get cancelled. Netflix's cancellation model is really annoying for consumers too. there's a constant pressure to watch something as soon as it comes out, or risk it simply being cancelled. If your job or life doesn't allow you a ton of time to watch stuff, you have to be selective, and sometimes that means waiting until you hear some buzz around a show, and you simply CAN'T do that with Netflix cause by the time there's buzz, the show's fate has been decided.

    • @flamemasterelan
      @flamemasterelan 5 месяцев назад +18

That's not a Netflix thing, that's a media thing. Of course you have to watch something when it comes out. It was the same way with watching shows on network TV, where you (or more specifically, people who signed up for the Nielsen ratings program) would have to tune in week-to-week to their shows, or else risk their ratings drop, which could mean cancellation. If anything, the current subscription model is more forgiving, since you can watch your shows outside of the "prime time" broadcasting block and there's a window of time that they're watching the show, instead of just "the night it premiered," like it used to be.
The Netflix model obviously has its issues, as Alex said. Dropping all 8 episodes in one night is great if your show is Stranger Things and you become a smash hit. But it doesn't allow you the chance to really build buzz or a following. Even Netflix has started to see that by now, based on how they delayed the final 2-ish episodes of the latest season of Stranger Things so they could have a few weeks of people talking about the reveal 3/4 of the way through.

Normally I'd wince and hope that we get another adaptation in 20-30 years, but Stroud didn't make it big enough to have the necessary longevity, even though he's a much better author than JK Rowling. The fact that there are a handful of media websites saying that Netflix is claiming that a reason they cancelled "Shadow & Bone" was because of the strikes was what I immediately thought when the WGA and SAG were striking. The real reason is because they are reducing spending on projects to adopt a model similar to TV, a lot of competition and lifestyle shows that don't require writing, acting or special effects that cost $$$. It's ridiculous - and to know that they're going to open brick & mortar locations (physical stores) for Netflix experiences is moronic!

Also, they completely rushed through the story told in the books and completely nose dived away from them. They pulled a Percy Jackson. I’ve read the books, and was so extremely optimistic from the first season. One season, one book, and they only missed some worldbuilding aspects that they didn’t explain and started focusing a little more on side characters. Cool, cool, I can vibe with this. But then they rushed books 2 and 3 into one season, so they didn’t properly explore either, ruined the ending to the books, and sidelined the main characters. So they ruined the story, themes, worldbuilding, pacing, and had no where left to go other than their own “creative vision”.

There is a twisted truth to that statement though, even if it's disingenuous. Technically the strikes did affect the show due delaying productions for months. I know that there's still a bunch of people putting in the effort to try and get the show brought back or get another platform to pick it up and I really hope that it works. It quickly became one of my absolute favorite shows, and now that I've read the books it's based on, I'm so sad that there's no plans to continue the adaptation.

But it didn't get the promotion and the buzz it deserved and I'm still heartbroken they cancelled it. At this point I just don't want Netflix touching any other form of media for adaptation. They'll just ruin it.

Lockwood and co getting cancelled was such a gut punch to me. The acting was amazing, especially because it was the actor of lock woods first time acting, the story was great and enticing , the special effects were so good and the mysteries were all there but very subtle. The chemistry between all the characters was also perfect. And apparently it’s a very faithful book adaption too. Cancelling it was crazy, especially because it was in the top 10 for a while

I discovered Lockwood & Co. this week! For those who are wondering, it’s basically Sherlock Holmes as a teenage ghost hunter.
And I just happened to stumble across it. I had no idea that it even existed - and I was confident that it’d get a second season. It’s not on the same level as the BBC Sherlock Holmes (seasons one and two), but it’s a solid watch. It’s fun, a bit campy, and the premise is surprisingly unique. I personally like it better than Stranger Things.
It’s also MUCH better than most of the mediocre garbage on Netflix.

I didn’t even know the 2nd season of _Shadow and Bone_ released. The trailer and release date for the second season of _American Vandal_ dropped days before the entire season was released (never release an entire season of a mystery series at once. Fan engagement involving examining clues and forming theories from episode to episode is half the fun and also brings in new viewers between episodes through word of mouth and trending online chatter. All that dies when someone can binge it in one sitting.) and it# cancellation was announced the next week.
It seems like Netflix doesn’t bother advertising *any* of their shows beside _Stranger Things_ and _The Crown._ (And in the past Arrested Development, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Bojack Horseman.)

I loved Lockwood & Co. But I knew the moment the numbers came in it was one of those shows that was going to fight for its renewal. An immediate bubble show that didn't do badly, but not well either. Ultimately though it wasn't strong enough to justify 2 more seasons (the show was planned as a trilogy). Damn shame as it was SO well made. It was everything what Lock & Key should've been but never could become.
Felt so bad for Ruby (actress that played Lucy) because she turned down her role on Bridgerton and recasted her for this show only to end up like this. Her character on Bridgerton was at some point going to be a lead (probably), but she made a risky bet and didn't pay off.

Yes! Also, it would have been only two more seasons, it's a very solid story which could have made a major impact on fans and the trust in Netflix. Right now they are destroying any kind of faith and it's only getting worse. I'm at a point right now that I don't want them touching any book-series for adaptation, because they'll just leave us hanging with abused corpses of one beloved stories.

People, if you want to help shadow & bone to get picked up again, SIGN THE PETITION. Best example: warrior nun got picked up again after being canceled because the petition reached 120.000 signatures. SHADOW & BONE HAS MORE THAN THAT ALREADY AFTER NOT EVEN A WEEK!!! It’s not impossible!!!

Netflix made everyone wait like a year to find out if Julie and the phantoms would be renewed only to cancel it like a week before Christmas. the cast found out while doing a panel at a convention I believe. Netflix is ruining themselves by cancelling every good show

my friends and i were so devastated when Lockwood and Co. got cancelled. i've watched it so many times and i love the characters so so much. netflix doesn't know what they're doing. how could they let Riverdale go on for SEVEN GODDAMN SEASONS but won't even let Lockwood and Co. have two??? as for Shadow and Bone, it deserved a third season and/or the Six of Crows spinoff. they had absolutely no reason to cancel it and it was unfair to the fans, cast, author, and everyone involved in the making of the show.

Riverdale is a CW show with most seasons around 20 episodes. Netflix only has to pay to license it rather than to produce it.

when I came across inside job i thoight it was such a cool show with a unique concept- the shock I got when I found out it was only one season with THAT big of a cliffhanger too.
i agree again though nimona is so unreasonably good

I have this love hate relationship with Netflix right now. They cancel good shows, they ruin easy adaptations, they save shows and movies other channels screw over, and they perfectly adapt very difficult shows.
I love them For saving Star Trek Prodigy, and I am amazed at how good One Piece was. Honestly if they cancel One Piece after two or three seasons I'm gone. It needs to last ten seasons.
