LEARN HOW TO MAKE A VEGAN / VEGETARIAN CRISPY CALAMARI INSPIRED RECIPE THAT WILL ROCK YOUR WORLD!
LAY HO MA (how's it going in Cantonese)! This is definitely a game changer, but fair warning given to make this when no one's around - you're not going to want to share! Join me in this episode and learn how to make a vegan/vegetarian crispy calamari inspired recipe using hearts of palm. Let's begin
    Ingredients:
    5-7g Kombu ( • SUPER CRUNCHY Japanese... )
    1 cup water
    3/4 cup flour
    1 tsp salt
    1 tsp garlic powder
    1 tsp onion powder
    1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
    400ml can hearts of palm
    1 1/2 cups avocado oil
    1/4 cup strained tomatoes
    1 tsp Tabasco sauce
    lemon wedges to serve
    few sprigs dill
    few sprigs parsley
    Directions:
    1. Soak the kombu in 1 cup of water for a few hours or overnight
    2. Set up a small bowl and a plate for a wet mix and dry mix station. In the small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup kombu water, and 1/2 tsp salt. In the dry mix, whisk together 1/2 cup flour 1/2 tsp salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper
    3. Drain the hearts of palm and slice them to about 2 inches in length. Then, carefully press out the centre cores
    4. Using forks or chopsticks, coat the hearts of palm pieces in the wet mix, then in the dry mix, and onto a plate
    5. Once the hearts of palm pieces are all coated, pour the avocado oil into a frying pan and heat on medium heat. Give the oil a few minutes to heat up (you can stick a wooden chopstick in the oil, it's ready when you see fast moving bubbles)
    6. Carefully add the hearts of palm to the oil and fry for 3-5mins on each side. Do this in small batches as to not overcrowd the pan. Carefully transfer them onto a cooling rack or onto a plate lined with paper towel to rest. Repeat this step until all the hearts of palm are cooked
    7. Make the dipping sauce by stirring together the strained tomatoes (or marinara sauce) and Tabasco sauce
    8. Serve the crispy hearts of palm with the dipping sauce, some lemon wedges and a generous sprinkle of fresh dill and parsley

I was fortunate to have been in Costa Rica and my friend had a timber operation in the mountains. We went up on horseback and on the way back down we went through a palm grove. My friend cut down a palm and we took it back to the beach where he prepped the heart. We grilled it over Guanacaste hard wood charcoal. OMG! It was so delicious. A great memory. I've been on the lookout for fresh palm, but to no avail. I'll try this recipe with canned. Thanks, Will, for another of your very inspirational recipes. And, I will order your latest cookbook to add to the first two you published. Judy

Made this recipe (with confidence). Hearts were crispy and super tasty. Did not have all the ingredients for the sauce so made a Korean gochujang sauce ( 1.5 Tsp gochujang, 1.5 Tsp ketchup, 2 Tsp cane sugar, 1 Tsp toasted sesame seeds, juice of 1/4 lemon; mix well). New to the channel but already a convert. Ordered all 3 books. The tiger is loose! Thx for sharing all these.

Thank you will for putting those little shorts/ads or whatever we can click on to get to your recipes. I'm off and thinking about many other things I have to look at on RUclips but then I'll see one of your recipes and stop caring about all the important stuff and just watch this!
(I'm curious thinking I may be able to bake these successfully if I cut with a pastry cutter a tiny bit of solid-at-room temperature coconut oil or something into the dry mixture, as if making a pie crust or scones 🤔 So that tiny bit of oil within be in the dry mixture inside the rings, so they can cook correctly?
This recipe superb and I cannot wait to make it. Perhaps I will be able to share it with others I hope.

I had no idea what a coconut palm is until I see the wikipedia description. Apparently it's the literally the "heart" of a palm tree obtained from the bud of the tree when it's cut down.
My mom recently told me about such vegetables which is quite hard to get, even for us who live in a tropical country. No kidding, to get one we need to cut down the tree to get it. And you might not even get one even if you do so if it's already eaten by fruit bats.
My family until recently had a coconut tree in the backyard. It died. Why? Because the bats ate the bud. And for such reason too, nobody in the neighborhood had palm trees anymore.
So yeah, this vegetable in particular is such a luxury in my place. If there's even some somehow appeared in local market, I bet it'd be sold out in a second.

This would be good option for vegan/vegetarians that crave calamari or something. Heart of palm has a lot of fiber, B6, iron, zinc, manganese and other things so definitely be good for non meater.

Hi Will, I have been following your Channel for a few years now and all of your recipes are superb! What do you think of the Lotus rice ramen noodle brand? Would you recommend cooking with those noodles?

"1 teaspoon tabasco sauce or more if you like"
*proceeds to dump half the bottle into the sauce* 😂

Tomato purée is also known as passata. It often comes in glass bottles, which can be reused.

I'm cooking this dish with jicama fries. Hearts of palm make a great mock tuna salad.
