  • Unbridled soared past Summer Squall through the stretch to score a surprising 3 1/2-length victory today in the 116th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
    A race that had figured to be decided by inches ended instead with a runaway winner and a dozen lengths separating the first four finishers. Unbridled, a 10-1 shot who finished 3 3/4 lengths behind Summer Squall in the Blue Grass Stakes three weeks ago, looked much the best reversing that decision today and was increasing his winning margin with every stride to the wire.
    Summer Squall finished six lengths in front of Pleasant Tap, a 40-1 shot, and it was another three lengths back to Video Ranger in fourth. Silver Ending, Killer Diller, Land Rush, Mister Frisky, Thirty Six Red, Power Lunch, Real Cash, Dr. Bobby A., Pendleton Ridge, Burnt Hills and Fighting Fantasy completed the finish in that order.
    Mister Frisky, sent off as the 19-10 favorite by a small margin over Summer Squall, who was 2-1, came into the race with a record of 16 for 16, the best record in Derby history. But the popular colt, who made his first 13 starts in Puerto Rico, faded badly after seven furlongs and finished eighth, beaten by 19 1/4 lengths.
    Unbridled, a son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Fappiano and the Le Fabuleux mare Gana Facil, paid $23.60 for $2 to win as the fifth betting choice and ran the mile and a quarter in a solid 2:02 under Craig Perret. The bay-colored colt, bred in Florida by Tartan Farms, is owned by Frances A. Genter, who is 92 years old and had never started a Derby horse before in more than half a century of racing. She bought Unbridled as a yearling for $70,000 from a Tartan dispersal sale in 1987. Unbridled is trained by Carl A. Nafzger, a 48-year-old former bull rider on the professional rodeo circuit.
    Unbridled will now be the favorite for the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 19 as he bids to become racing's first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. The series concludes with the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 9.

    Retired jockey Craig Perret (born February 2, 1951) last April was voted to be inducted to The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Perret, 68, was North America's leading apprentice jockey by earnings in 1967 (prior to the Eclipse Awards) and won the 1990 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey and in 1998 he received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. A native of New Orleans, Perret won 4,415 races in a career that spanned from 1967 to 2005. He won the Belmont Stakes in 1987 with Bet Twice, denying Alysheba the Triple Crown. Three years later, Perret won the Kentucky Derby with Unbridled. He won four Breeders' Cup races, including two editions of the Sprint (G1), as well as two runnings of both the Travers Stakes (G1) and Queen's Plate, among others. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m., next August 2 at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion. The event is open to the public and free to attend. Legendary racecaller Tom Durkin will serve as master of ceremonies. Congratulations Mister Perret!
    Best Regards from Venezuela.

    Trainer Carl A. Nafzger (born August 29th. 1941 in Plainview, Texas) was awarded with the highest honours of two different sports in the same year: In 2008 he was inducted to both National Museum and Hall of Fame Racing in Saratoga Springs, New York and to Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas. Before Nafzger was involved in horse racing, he was a Rodeo bullrider champion. Congratulations Mister Nafzger!

    For the benefit and convenience of you and others who view this, I have the lyrics for "My Old Kentucky Home" and they are below if you want to look them over while listening or sing along.
    It occurs at the 36:13 mark.
    The sun shines bright on My Old Kentucky Home,
    'tis Summer, the people are gay;
    The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom,
    while the birds make music all the day.
    The young folks roll on the little cabin floor,
    all merry, all happy and bright;
    By'n by hard times come a-knocking at the door,
    then My Old Kentucky Home, good night!
    Weep no more, my lady!
    O, weep no more today!
    We will sing one song for My Old Kentucky Home,
    for My Old Kentucky home far away.
    👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
    And the race itself begins at the 45:51 mark.

      When Mrs Ginter died & they sold her horses I workd the first sale for Gainesway (27 years after that) and I topped Gana Facil off to go to the ring Some ole girl from South Africa came and was going to take her away from me and I kicked her in the butt and sent her head first into the shed row and that was the end of somebody grabbing Gana Facil, altho the broodmare manager at Mare Haven came to get her and she ended up getting kicked in the behind too.... there was another top racehorse mare named Jeano that I worked on too
