Space Crusade BLOOD ANGELS Mission One Playthrough Battle Report | Let's Play an Old Board Game

  • Always Board Never Boring is super excited to bring a playthrough of Space Crusade to the channel. In this first mission battle report, a hopelessly outnumbered tactical squad of Blood Angels enter a space hulk in hopes of hunting down a chaos dreadnought. Things go about as well as you might expect...
    This is my first time playing the game in over 25 years, so there's every chance there are a few rules mistakes, but hopefully you all enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed playing.
    A few notes on the playthrough (minor spoilers ahead):
    1. Yes, I make a tactical blunder leaving a space marine exposed in a corridor in the first turn. I should have used his two remaining movement points to hole up in one of the rooms.
    2. Yes, I muller the pronunciation of Mekaniak twice. It was late. I was tired. And I'm stupid.
    3. It's debatable whether I should have lost 5 or 10 points for the death of the assault cannon marine, because he was armed with only a bolter at the point he died. If it was only supposed to be 5 points, then my marines actually put in a "commendable" performance and I would have got one honour badge (requiring four to go up a rank).

    Brilliant, I love Space Crusade! I see one disgruntled alien commander has given you a thumbs down. One of the things I enjoy most about it is how well visually designed everything is. I love that the cards have colourful flavour on one side which gives you an idea of when to use them. Then you flip them over for what would in most games be the dull mechanics, and you get the most amazing little piece of action packed artwork on that side too! Great design given the intended younger audience - giving them little strategic pointers like that. And the manuals are full of gorgeous, dynamic and quintessentially 90s GW comic book artwork. I was so pleased to grab a lovely condition one from eBay last year. I had the lot as a youngster, Eldar Attack, Mission Dreadnought, but when I got back from uni they'd all gone :(

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

      We've found the person who clearly wasn't pumped, and definitely doesn't lift. It's in my character to focus too much on downvotes. I can get dozens of upvotes, but when I get a downvote I fixate on that instead, wondering whether it was a bad video, something I did wrong in the presentation, if the video was too long, or someone found my voice too annoying. Was it something I could "fix" for next time. It comes from having anxiety, and I'm trying very hard to not do that anymore and to keep telling myself that life's a garden party and people dislike things for reasons that are entirely their own and beyond your power to do anything about. Phew. That was a bit heavy. I should go get my morning coffee...
      Space Crusade is a wonderful presentation, packed with so much evocative art, and it just looks and feels so exciting. When this turned up in the post when I was a kid my excitement was through the roof. My original copy went during the purge, when I sold all my games and miniatures before university. It was a bad move. I'm glad to hear you managed to get a copy for yourself. I would love to get Eldar Attack as I've actually never played it!

    It was great to hear the genuine excitement in your voice - it really was taking you back all those years. Very enjoyable playthrough, would definitely like to see more. It does seem a bit harsh for one squad to take on the same enemies as a full three squads would do. That first alien turn was brutal!
    Looking at it now I don't see why I didn't like this game more, as it has quite a few elements from the future Space Hulk in it, but for some reason it didn't hit the spot, despite being a massive fan of early GW board games.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 года назад +1

      It was so good to be playing this again after so long. The way points are allocated is supposed to offset the disadvantage somewhat (really the alien player only wins if they wipe out the entire squad while the marines get "access" to a steady stream of points, and really the ultimate goal is to reach the fifth rank, regardless of which missions you win), but it definitely swings the difficulty considerably in the marines' favour when there are more squads in play and they help each other out a bit. It's also really necessary for the alien player to have a "gentleman's agreement" and not do anything like drop all 32 blips on the first board.
      The original Space Hulk came out in 1989 while Space Crusade was 1990 and was a more accessible option for children. Both are excellent games that I love. I only have the third edition of Space Hulk, which is beautiful, but it would be nice to have a vintage 1989 copy as well. I also wouldn't mind having a second edition copy, which did come out long after Space Crusade. I could fill my house with all this vintage stuff if only I had deeper pockets!

    • @phildevey6302
      @phildevey6302 3 года назад

      I thought Space Crusade came out first for some reason, but I didn't look it up. I have a 1st edition Space Hulk with Deathwing and Genestealer, and a 2nd edition, then I didn't bother with the next two - only so many times you can buy the same game. I will sell the 2nd edition one at some stage, because I don't really use it, and I like the retro look of 1st edition (and the rules are better, in my opinion).

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

    And there was i thinking '7' was a lucky number (not according the the space marine results chart!!! Unlucly start on the first set of rooms, to lose as many as you did was a real bad roll streak. Great upload, really brought back a lot of nostalgia, I wasn't lucky enough to have Space Marine, my parents bought me Tyranid Attack instead which I coukd never work out the rules so didn't actually get to play.
    The game has stood the test of time, a real masterpiece in a box. Thoroughly enjoyed your play through, more outings with hopefully better dice rolls would get my vote.
    I can see that the restoration videos will be quite short in number, it looks in great shape, what a fab donation!

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 года назад +1

      I think the first marine dying in the corridor was all my own fault. He could have hidden in a side room as he had movement points to spare. Other than that, my loses were just brutal bad luck, and towards the end my commander couldn't catch a break with zeros across the board on two different rolls.
      As you say, this really is a masterpiece in my eyes. I'm so happy to have it back in my collection. The copy that was donated to the channel was missing a few bits, but another subscriber made a money donation which enabled me to buy the bits I was missing, and when it was all brought together it was in amazingly good shape so I am immensely lucky and grateful. The difference between this and the beaten up copy of HeroQuest I bought off eBay is night and day! It's mainly going to be a case of painting it up and fixing the box now that I've magnetised the miniatures.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  8 месяцев назад

      So, the genestealers are just roaming the space hulk, that's why they turn up from random card pulls and don't grant victory points - the alien player has a little less control over them, and for the marines they are a distraction from their main goal. This game is from the Rogue Trader era, and it wasn't so uncommon for orks to align with chaos if it helped them achieve their goals. There is a section in the Rogue Trader lore about chaos orks, and how orks will work for or with chaos without being corrupted by it, especially if there is loot on the table. It seems to be something that has been removed from the newer lore, though.

      There are no cards to give the grunts more wounds. There are cards to make the commanders more resilient though, while some order cards can help to keep your team alive. Your commander is your staying power; your grunts are your tactical versatility and mobile weapon platforms. There squishiness is built into the balance of the game.

      It's very different to HeroQuest. Same designer, same publisher, same involvement with GW (leaning much more into the 40K setting than HeroQuest leaned into the Old World setting), but it plays in a very different way, and everybody is competing to be the winner. Unfortunately, Avalon Hill have already addressed the idea of a reprint and indicated it wouldn't be something they would consider as the game is bound so heavily in the IP.

      @carlosbarreto4695 Год назад

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yeah... Indeed, Space Crusade seems to be deeply connect to Warhammer.
      Yet, that could be doable. Avalon Hill has the big opportunity to build a world for HeroQuest and a new Space Crusade could be the future of said world. I know it's easier said than done, but it's just to say that this could be a possibility.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Год назад

      I agree it's doable. I do think it would lose a lot separating it from the IP (HeroQuest was very generic, Space Crusade isn't), but it would still be a really fun game. It doesn't seem like it's something Avalon Hill want to pursue though. They did talk about Battle Masters though.

      They have made several games that sort of fall into that space, without ever quite being like Space Crusade. Labyrinth of the Necrons gave me strong Space Crusade vibes, although it was a much more compact and streamlined game. Blackstone Fortress feels like a tactical skirmish game with a squad of characters, and then there were title like Deathwatch: Overkill. Space Hulk is probably overdue for a reprint now, I guess.

    • @genghisgahan9623
      @genghisgahan9623 2 года назад

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 года назад

      Deathwatch Overkill is good, but it takes a while to get used to the spatial nature of the game. While Labyrinth of the Necrons plays completely differently to Space Crusade, there was something about the really streamlined rules, simple dice combat, item cards, and the coloured marines that really made it feel like a Space Crusade game.

    About the devastator, I disagree with most peoples interpretation of them. "Devastators - Futuristic Battle Machines" was one of the original box sets that came out for Rogue Trader and contained three support weapons, the land speeder, the squat mole mortar, and the imperial tarantula. I think the devastator referred to in the fluff and on the ork cards refers to an ork combi weapon that has the same functions as the tarantula and then explodes. Unfortunately, the Space crusade tarantula rules were in the Mission Dreadnought expansion and so this card is a leftover from early drafts.
    An actual combi weapon rule like in Rogue Traders 'Ere We Go, was likely overkill for Space Crusade purposes, so the tarantula twinned las cannon suffices. Ouch.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 года назад +1

      That sounds feasible, if they were intending to put tarantulas in the base game; although that would make the Mekaniak incredibly powerful. I happen to have the Mission Dreadnought rules book, and the tarantula fires three shots, each rolling two red dice. It would make sense to remove that from the base game! I really like the idea of letting the D6 decide what kind of crazy contraption the ork fires, though. It seems suitably orky.

    • @johnmiddleton4291
      @johnmiddleton4291 3 года назад

      I think it's that some dude at MB saw there was going to be a tarantula in the game and then saw the front image of the Devastators box assuming they were all just called Devastators.
      I would probably let it fire two random heavy weapon shots, as that's closer to a combi weapon.
      There are other instances of weird naming. In the original WD preview of the metal prototypes, the assault cannon is called an autocannon and it looks like the autocannons from the old epic warlords. Someone realized the 40k autocannon isn't the same thing. The plasma gun was going to be a flamer too.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 года назад +1

      Yeah I’ve seen those pictures of the metal miniatures with the flamer paint job. I guess another possibility is they were originally going to call the commander’s heavy bolter a devastator. It’s worth noting the space marines combi weapon doesn’t get to fire two heavy weapons. It’s either a heavy bolter or a plasma gun for each shot.

    New to space crusade. A quick question, can marines from different factions engage in firefights in a four-player scenario?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Год назад

      Technically there is nothing stopping you. The only co-operation between players is when they make a deal, otherwise everyone is out for themselves. Friendly fire is a thing (you can blow up your own troops, or any other troops, with things like the plasma gun and missile launcher), but there is also no rule that forbids you from shooting at any miniature you like.
      However, it's generally not worth doing. The alien player has a lot more troops than the marines, and a lot more tricks to play from event cards, so marines should usually be focusing on those threats. Space marines only get points for killing aliens - not for killing marines - but a marine player still loses points for every marine they lose. And at the end of each game, you have to work out your points and progress in the campaign. If the marines fight too much, they will give the alien player too many points and they will all lose as a result

      When shooting, bolters cap at 4 damage, which isn't enough to hurt the dread. In close combat you have a lot more options. A bolter marine with an assault blade, bolt pistol and meltabomb has a very good chance of ruining a dread in a single round of combat.

    Those white dice must not be very balanced considering the amount of high rolls you got with them (to disgrace of your marines I must add :( )

      Definitely. Obviously it was never intended for solo play (although I really enjoy playing it solo, and I tend to play a lot of games solo that aren't necessarily intended for it), and with fewer squads the difficulty spikes considerably. With one alien player facing off against three marine players, it gets really interesting. Thanks for watching.

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I didn't explain my point very and I fully agree with your point. What I was commenting on was the difficulty level of only playing with one team of Marines, not on you solo playing. Great video series on a classic game from mine and I assume your childhood.

      @@Stuffandstuff974 I agree. It's really tough with just one squad of marines.Taking on all of the bad guys and facing all of the events means there's a considerable spike in difficulty. The only good thing is there are relatively few points on the table for the alien player to score.

    I NEED HELP.
    Does the alien player get buffed at all the more marines play?
    With 3 marine players its just a cake walk.
    Am I missing anything?

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  Год назад +1

      The game is balanced on the assumption there will always be three squads of marines, so there is no additional balancing. But it shouldn't be a cake walk for the marines, especially not in later levels.
      A few things to keep in mind:
      The marine squads are competing. Only one player can "win" a level, so even if one marine player wins, two others don't. Divide and conquer.
      Play for the points. Each marine kill is a big swing, because you gain points, and the marines lose points. For example, if you kill a heavy marine, you gain 10 points and that player loses 10 points. That's a +20 swing, and with more marines on the board there's a lot more swinging to be done. If you can force marines into very low or negative points, they die and lose their rank and honour badges, which gives you a bigger lead in the campaign. Remember, the aim isn't to win individual missions, it's to disrupt the marines to an extent that you become a Lord of Chaos before any of them become a Captain Senioris.
      The alien player should also find it easier in later missions thanks to reinforcements that could potentially double the number of units they have to play, and also because as they progress they get extra event cards and reinforcements.

      The different marine squads are competing. They all have their own separate scores and will go up and down the rankings in the campaign independently.

      Rogue Trader era. There are no Necrons in the game, they are chaos androids, and at the time this game came out orks would work with whoever furthered their goals. The genestealers aren’t part of the chaos force as such, they spawn from cards so although the chaos player controls them they are actually just supposed to be roaming around the space hulk.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 года назад

      It’s worked into the rules in a different way. The chaos player doesn’t have blips for the genestealers so has limited strategies for them, they cannot summon them on demand, and they don’t grant any victory points when killed. That’s the compromise for being a versus game with no AI for the enemies.
