- Always Board Never Boring is delighted to finally have a copy of Space Crusade: Mission Dreadnought, the first of two exciting expansions for Space Crusade (also known as StarQuest). In this video, he unboxes his copy, talks through the components, and mentions a few things to watch out for if you are buying a secondhand copy.
A huge thanks to Phil Devey, whose generosity made this video possible.

I was glad to see it going to someone who would appreciate it, and get some fun out of it. You know what we need now - a playthrough of those new missions!
Thank you so much for all the help you've given the channel. You can bet I'll be doing a playthrough at some point.
Another reason not to glue the dreadnoughts together is that they can be combined in various ways: you can also build a tall one with 2 weapons (shown on the side of the box) and a short one with 4 weapons.
Yeah, that’s part of the design as there are four marks of dread with four different blip tokens in the expansion. The specs for the four designs are in the expansion book.
Made up for you, what a fab opportunity from Phil, look forward to seeing a play through of the missioms. Does your passion for space marine stretch to Space Crisade, advanced Space crusade and tyranid attack?
I have a complete, mainly unpunched copy of Advanced Space Crusade sitting on the shelf waiting for a video. I would like to pick up Tyranid Attack too, but it's stupidly expensive and you can almost play it with Advanced Space Crusade - just need the rules, a few cards, and the extra miniatures.
Awesome! Love space crusade! Still have my original copy from the 90s plus a copy a friend gave me Currently repainting all the minis , I didnt even realize there was S.C expansions!!! What a game!
I need to get cracking on painting once HeroQuest is finished. The other expansion is called Eldar Attack and was mainly for adding an easier to manage two-player mode.
Think I'm going to buy this expansion from ebay. Without the box it seems to be going for a reasonably...ish price. Love the new heavy weapons for the space marines, and the new chicken legged dreadnought looks amazing. I'm a huge fan of heroquest, advanced heroquest and space crusade and really appreciate your quality content on these awesome games. Good to see these classics getting love.
Thanks so much for the kind words. If you love Space Crusade, you'll really get a kick out of this expansion.
Hello! I've really enjoyed all the Space Crusade videos, it's my favorite game. I wish you kept doing more, such as a mission using Librarians (White Dwarf 145), or using Space Marine Scouts or an Ork Mob (White Dwarf 134). I have searched all over youtube and nobody has done any mission with those rules.
Greetings from Spain!
There's lots more Space Crusade to come on the channel. I have a full restoration and painting series lined up. I also have all the extra scout and ork rules which I may run at some point.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring good news! meanwhile, I'll keep watching the other videos. I have already seen the entire list of heroquest, advance space crusade, dungeonquest, lost patrol and some more. Thanks for the good videos you create, they are very entertaining.
Thanks so much for watching the videos, and for the kind words. I really appreciate the support.
They ramped up the double edged difficulty with mission Dreadnaught.
The new dreads are pretty scary.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I can't wait to see a battle report. The Marines are really going to need that extra fire power.
What a nice set, I'm looking forward to a play through video 😁
Loving your Space Crusade play through videos, any chance of featuring Scouts?
Thanks. I recently acquired Advanced Space Crusade so now have the original plastic scout miniatures, and I already have the scout rules, so scouts are going to happen at some point.
Congrats on getting that expansion! That was a great breakdown of it, and I can't wait to see the missions in action. The only bad thing is it makes me want it more, ha!
Thanks for watching. I'm looking forward to playing this on the channel.
Those old dreadnoughts are really neat, and it's interesting how much the design has changed.
I bought some old original metal necrons at a flea market a few weeks back. It was a great find, but what I found funny was that one of the plastic baggies of them was labeled something like 'Limited run dreadnoughts'. Inside were 4 battletech mechs and some necron scarabs. I bought it for the scarabs since it was cheap and didn't realize the mechs were battletech till I got a closer look at home. I think the original owner may have seen the dreadnoughts from space crusade and thought these were something similar way back in the day. I don't really know, but had a little laugh either way.
Yeah, the classic ED209 design is neat.
Excellent video mate. finally got round to digging out my old copy i picked up 20 years ago. few bits missing but its now its own restoration project haha
Nice. Thanks for watching, and good luck with the restoration!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring thanks man. Managed to get the parts for core space crusade and now just facing the taste of finding the long legged dread from mission dreadnought now
I have the core game. Picked it up a few years ago. I used to have this when I was a kid, I’ve been looking for a copy of it for a couple years, but the right one hasn’t shown up yet. You’re lucky to have this, very cool.
I'm definitely very lucky. It's a great expansion for an awesome game.
Well, I was lucky enough to get this expansion pack back in the day. I got it for Christmas with the Core Game. And the good thing about it was, it only cost $9AU!
Yeah, it's crazy to think about the prices I am paying for things now like HeroQuest and old metal GW miniatures compared to the prices when I originally had them as a child. Unfortunately I sold my entire game collection decades ago and I suffer for it now. I'm not looking forward to buying a copy of Eldar Attack!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I basically had to pay an arm and a leg for Eldar Attack. But $150AU was a price I was willing to take for the expansion. I am a bit of a completest with certain things!
I’m just learning about these things as well. Have you ever played any of the other games of that era? Pressman’s “Mutant Chronicles: Doom Troopers Siege of the Citadel” ?
I played a lot of games from the HeroQuest era, and have many of them in my collection: Most of the old GW games, Dark World, Siege of the Citadel, Legend of Zagor, D&D Adventure Board Game, Dragonlance, Dragon Quest, Dungeon!, and of course, the mighty Dragon Strike.
Wow, that is quite the epic expansion you got there! That super-sized dreadnought is sooo good! All I know about Space Crusade I’ve learned from your videos; keep ‘em coming. 😃
Yeah, this is a good expansion, and the big dread is really scary. Thanks for watching!
Looking forward to more Space Crusade.
Definitely lots more to come on the channel.
Man, the art in this book is surprisingly amazing. 2:49 has some great art in there. You can feel the weight in that image. Loving it.
Space Crusade has lots of great artwork throughout the cards and books. Really evocative stuff.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Like, 40k has always had great artwork, but something about the old stuff is just really compelling, like some of the great 80s comics.
Hope we can see some games with this set.
That is the intention, but I am running a terminator campaign at the moment and then I want to revisit Eldar Attack for another playthrough.
Very cool! Enjoy, and hope to see a play through sometime!
That's definitely the plan.
Awesome stuff mate!
Thanks.
I remember buying this brand new. Those dreadnoughts were awesome.
They really are. The big one is really intimidating on the board.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring it is. I could never defeat him.
Glad that you finally got a copy, and also appreciate it far more than I had all those years ago.
Like Heroquest, Space Crusade was instrumental in bringing Warhammer to the masses, and Hasbro & GW should definitely consider a new joint venture. Sadly I had to make the hard decision to bin all my components and regret it to this day, and also not having picked up Eldar Attack( did you get that one as well? ). Thankfully the rules of the game was burned into my brain and easily made an Eldar vs Orks themed reconstruction of the game, complete with an app to simulate an event deck. The dice was probably the most challenging thing to replace without resorting to EBay.
Great video!
Thanks so much. I still need to get Eldar Attack, but that will involve saving up some pennies as it's very expensive. Your reconstruction sounds great.
Same here Steven Ray
I only had the core game, and I loved it - absolutely loved it! With the new release of Hero Quest by Hasbro, I hope that we may expect new release of Space Crusade. Though, whereas Hero Quest is not deep rooted in the Warhammer Universe, Space Crusade is much more rooted in the 40K Universe.
Space Crusade is superb. I do think it would lose a little something of what made it special in the transition to a more generic setting, but it would certainly still be a lot of fun. I think the fact it never got a US release might make it too much of a risk for Hasbro to consider.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring too bad. Then Mantic should require the license and produce Space Crusade in their Warpath universe. They have their own version of Space Marines - Enforcers - and orcs (Gorans), goblins, aliens (Nameless ones), andoids, walkers, etc. It would be AWESOME,
Conversion beamers are great weapons. Make short of terminators. The fusion gun (mulit-melta) rules are sort of strange.
The conversion beamer rules are really fun. I like them in Advanced Space Crusade too. The fusion gun is probably the least interesting of the new weapons, as it's really just a plasma gun+.
Thanks for the video. Makes me want to dig it out and play it. I have this expansion (gutted I threw away the box). I also have Eldar Attack and I kept the box. The prices of these are crazy and it would be great if this was released again (like Heroquest). As an aside, I always used to think the dreadnaughts looked like ED-209 from the RoboCop film🤭
Thanks for watching. Yeah, I often refer to the dreads as ED209 myself (and the androids as T800s).
this was so so cool!
Good video mate, nice components!
I have this expansion. Unfortunately don't have the box anymore but still have the complete contents inside the main Space Crusade box. Damn I threw a lot of stuff out 20+ years ago not knowing how collectable this stuff would be.😢
I feel your pain. I sold every board game and Games Workshop product I owned before going to university and now spend my days trying to buy it all back for about eight times the price!
WooHoo! Nice!
I have this but couldn't find the box in my old bedroom. All contents were put in the main game box
Thanks, great video. I have vague recollections of fielding an old style ‘baked bean tin’ dreadnought in blood angels colours on the side of the marines. Were there ever rules for this, or were me and my friends just messing about?
There were no official rules for adding dreads to the marine forces in Space Crusade but there were rules for adding them to Advanced Space Crusade.
Any plans on picking up Advanced Space Crusade?
I did a “coming soon” video the other week where I revealed I have recently acquired a complete mostly unpunched copy of ASC.
The graal.
What about a little play ?
It's on the dance card, but I can't say when right now.
Woot, I just got this 2 weeks ago. :)
Any chance you have a extra missile launcher for the Dreadnought ;)
Unfortunately I don't. Sorry.
Space Marines always know how to crash a heretic-party, SWATTING mutants, and blow the shit out of xenos... but that giant Dreadnought too knows a thing or two
... or three or four. He's quite a terrifying enemy with that many super heavy weapons on board.
I am just about to play Space Crusade with an Ork Mob using the White Dwarf 134 rules, do you know if the Orks get extra boys or an extra heavy weapons like the Marines, Scouts and Terminators get if your using the mission Dreadnought expansion? . . I couldn't find anything 😪
I believe 134 came out at the beginning of 1991, so would have probably been written without consideration for what might happen with expansions. I would have to go back and check the article again, but I don't remember it specifying how to handle Mission Dreadnought with scouts or termies either.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring it's in WD 145. . For that campaign but also the regular missions Terminators get an additional heavy weapon Terminator and a Librarian but can't use Tarantula if your using mission Dreadnought. . Scouts exchanged exactly the same as power armour marines so you get an extra heavy and one extra standard scout..
Just no mention of Orks anywhere. .
You get 11 orks without mission Dreadnought compared to 5 Marines, Scouts or Terminators . .
I think as a house rule we will just give the ork player an extra Heavy and 3 extra boys as its about 2 orks to a marine conversion. . Maybe an extra equipment card. .
15 Orks should be a suitable mini horde . .
I'm sure it will be fun, Space Crusade always is 😁. . . About bloody time that it was re released really. .
Ah, of course, 145 being a much later issue, that makes sense. I have a copy of 145 but I've never played that campaign (I've only relatively recently reacquired a copy of Space Crusade after getting rid of my original copy many moons ago).
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I was the same, I played it continuously through school but when I went to college my room and all my stuff in the loft got tidied by my parent. . .
When they said "we threw out some of your old toys" I thought they ment rattles and teething rings not my entire rogue trader collection along with a 100 strong space slaan army and a simular sized squat army. .
Even my warhammer quest, Heroquest, Space Crusade and Advanced Space Crusade got tipped. .
I only picked up another copy of Space Crusade years later and got back into it again, sadly that went missing while moving house a few years ago,
I just got another copy of my own this year as I remembered it being a simple enough game to teach to kids so I was hoping to play with my Daughter and Wife. . . Beats cards when you have a rainy camping holiday 🤣
This is the first time I have ever owned mission dreadnought and the eldar expansion though or used the White Dwarf content so it feels new and exiting again. .
@@johnfarscape I only had myself to blame. When I went to university, I sold everything. I really didn't think I would ever come back to gaming as I hadn't really used any of it for about a year beforehand anyway. I sold three almost entirely metal Fantasy Battle armies, and every GW boxed game I owned (and I pretty much owned them all). It's painful to think now how much it would all be worth these days. The armies alone would probably have put one of my kids through university!
Dont tell me what to think.
I got this when it first came out!!!! Bloody brilliant expansion 🥰🥰🥰 3 extra dread's if I'm not mistaken 🤔🙄🤣 Well, it was a long time ago 🙄🥲🥰
Two more dreads, giving you three in total, but one of them had the four weapon mounts. You also got four more androids, but the best thing was the new weapons for the marines.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Painting everything was so much fun 😎
