Wow, what a blast from the past! Thank you very much for that unboxing, it has brought back many good old memories. Late 80s, early 90s, those were the glory days! I purchased my copy and both expansions as a kid, one of those long summers that I used to spend with my family in England. I remember when I brought the game back to Spain and showed it to my friends... it totally blew their minds! Then it was released here and many of them grabbed it, but it came with the second box art... and how proud was I of my very much nicer and crispier box drawing! About that time I also bought the classic 1990 edition of Space Hulk, which I remember was gathering dust on a shelve at a WHS, for a mere 10 quid. As I never got my hands into the original expansions, I made out house rules and cardboard tokens to boost the terminators with assault cannons and chain fists! We always thought that the genestealer player did kick way too much butt and wanted to level things up a bit, at least on that edition. Perhaps it’s time to resurrect my old copies of both games, which I stored years ago in my parent’s attic, and restore them to full glory for when my kids grow up a bit. That would be a really awesome and motivating restoration project, indeed. Many thanks for the inspiration, and keep up the good work!
Thanks for sharing your story. I'm glad the video was a nice nostalgia kick for you. Restoring the game for your kids would be a fantastic project, and I'm sure they would really appreciate it. So, was Space Crusade renamed Star Quest in Spain? I know it was rebranded in places like Germany, and even had some of the violence toned down.
Always Board Never Boring , in Spain the game was called “Cruzada Estelar”, which is a direct translation from “Space Crusade” in English. Even though technically it was not rebranded, and kept the same name, it did not sell as well as Hero Quest and didn’t get to be as known as the latter (perhaps the name wasn’t as catchy easy saying?). As for the violence, I am pretty sure that the game was not toned down in Spain, but you are right about this being done in other countries. At that time it was rather normal and, for instance, many violent computer games in the mid 90s (when polygons started to be a thing) were toned down in countries such as Germany, with green blood and no gory effects. Now that I think of that... if you shoot gretchins I guess blood would be kind of green, so it wouldn’t make a difference after all!
Thank you SO much for this video! I literally stumbled upon this and clearly have been missing out! Now to find a copy...it looks AWESOME! Cheers, Ryan
Still love this game. Have it and both expansions (with my Mission Dreadnought still mostly on the sprues). It has aged much better than Heroquest though I still love that game too. I have the second edition but tbh I prefer the the 1st edition box art. Not sure why they changed it.
Thanks for watching. I suspect the art change was to do with violence. Certain elements of the game were toned down in some territories, as I understand it, so it may be the case they changed the artwork for those places and then just ran with it for everywhere.
I thought it just did such a fantastic job of setting the scene, and making sure you knew you were really going to be up against it. Coming to this from HeroQuest, the first game I got a drubbing by the chaos lord was quite a shock!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring So for me this was my first game after seeing a space marine is a random white dwarf I found by chance. For me the art on the cards and in the book just made me want more.
Such a great game! That one, Space Hulk, and Crusade (and Talisman) were great investments for the Games library. Some games can languish unplayed or rarely, but not those! The magnetisation sounds interesting. I'm pretty certain, this was not even a rare option at the time when these games were new.
Brilliant game had it in the 80s along with about 20 other games left them all in the loft of my.old house can’t believe the price of them now cheers brilliant video as usual be interested in seeing the play through 👍
This was one of the games that I sold in the great purge, which I regret often. Sold it all for pennies, so I know your pain. I’m looking forward to doing a playthrough, hopefully soon.
They are really nice. I particularly like the marines and chaos marines. They look pretty funny standing next to modern marines though, due to the size creep.
Having managed to acquire Advanced Space Crusade, Space Hulk 1st edition and Death Wing, I've put this on my list of things to get. I dig modern GW, but this older era is what latched onto my brain. The lore, the charm and a huge dose of nostalgia keep attracting me to these games.
Ohh, Advanced Space Crusade is on my list to reacquire one day. I never really appreciated it back in the day; just couldn’t really get my head around the rules. Good luck with your collection!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring thank you! It's fun collecting these games. The prices are a bit over the top, but that's the only real drawback. Channels like yours keep reminding how fun this can all be.
Yeah, as much as I love modern games, I've always got one foot in the past. I started my blog originally just to talk about old games, and I'm really enjoying doing more of the older stuff on my channel. It certainly can sting the wallet sometimes though. But then, I guess that's true when collecting newer games too!
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring i keep buying old White Dwarf magazines and it just keeps fueling the love of the era. Being in the states late 80s early 90s meant little to no access of GW stuff. Not until the mid 90s did I even get a chance to start my failed Eldar army. Good thing a current paycheck and ebay exist :)
I actually imported this game from the UK to the US about 2 years ago now. I've only played it once (so far!), but it's such a great game. Was such a shame it was never released here.
I consider myself lucky. I got a copy many decades ago for Christmas. The local toy shops were getting rid of their back stock, and they were selling the core game for $19AU. I even got a copy of the Mission Dreadnought expansion pack for $9AU. So their loss was my benefit. I still own Space Crusade, with both official expansions, and I agree with you. This is better than HeroQuest, which I also own. I even have Battle Masters, the latter two I got from Charity Shops here in Australia. So I'm proud of myself for owning the complete trilogy of Milton Bradley/Games Workshop collaborations.
Nice. I had Battle Masters as a kid, but just like with HeroQuest, Space Crusade and dozens of other classics, I sold it when I went to university. I would probably pick up Battle Masters again if I got the chance, but it's not high on my list of things to reacquire. I don't think I would have the space for the box these days. That thing was huge!
Would love painting tutorials for this! I've just got into painting heroquest miniatures. (Your vids have been extremely helpful) I desperately wanted heroquest as a kid but I got space crusade instead. I still have it to this day and have extra board tiles and figures etc as my friend gave me his so we used to combine it to make it more epic! Fun times great game! I was always planning on repainting the figures as my painting back then was not great!
Well I'm definitely painting this set as soon as I plough through the last of my HeroQuest stuff. Hopefully I can ramp up the speed so we can get to it sooner!
the original genestealer had only one body type. the one in your hand. there were then 2 arm variations, the version here with its 4 arms "level" and the space hulk version with its arms at different heights. these along with the plastic tyranid hive warroirs in the advanced space crusade box made the core of my nid army throughout most of my teenaged years. good memories
A blast from the past. Always liked this game as a step into the WH40k and Space Hulk universe. By the way, the Genestealer bodies are very much alike the one´s in the first edition of Space Hulk while the arms are not. The claws have a different shape and the angle of the hands is different.
Love the vid, with any card parts in any game that have to slip into plastic or other card bits if you get one of those superglue pots that come with a brush you can just brush some on the edges and it will stop them peeling or getting scuffed. . . You can even paint the edge to protect it further either to match the component or just black looks nice. . If you have an airbrush a quick spray of varnish also helps things last. . I sprayed all my components with satin varnish to make them match as sone were glossy and some were matt as there seems to be a difference from the two different sets I used to build one, they had different box art. .
Thanks. PVA gluing the edges of card elements to repair or preserve them is all covered in my HeroQuest restoration project videos, and I will be doing similar videos when I go through the Space Crusade restoration project. There are two different box arts (I have both). Some components like the space marine trackers were matt in the second edition box (which I show in another video) and glossy in the first edition box (which is the one I show here).
Space Hulk also told the story through vox comm and mission logs, so this is a reference back to that. Chaos androids were built by the evil Chaos Squats. All obviously squated, ha, almost immediately. They feature more prominently in the Space Marine epic range where androids were on the chaos sprue along with chaos squats daemeons, etc. The good old days when beastmen were part of the imperial guard. The chaos dreadnought is also based on the one from epic rather than the Rogue Trader metal one. What's odd is that all of them weapons for it, and many of the marines, look much more like designs from Mutant Chronicles Warzone than anything from 40k of the time. This is especially true of the assault cannon and missile launchers. Almost like someone was looking at the wrong art...
Interesting. I don't remember the androids turning up anywhere else. I mean, other than Terminator movies, I mean. I don't recall much of Space Hulk from back in the day. While I consider it a classic now, when I was a kid it just didn't appeal to me (possibly because it didn't have the enemy variety I had seen in other games) and I never actually owned my own copy until the 2009 edition.
Space Hulk had lots of variety, it's just that, true to GW form, you had to buy all the expansions to get it. Lots of White Dwarf extras too. The androids were a good option in epic, especially since you had the minis already if building a chaos force. They even had the cards in the Renegades box set. Shame they never went further with the chaos squats. GW probably will never do them now because the minis can't be 50mm tall.
Oh, I know that now about Space Hulk, I'm talking about my perception back in the day. Space Hulk came out when I was 10 or something, and I think at that point I owned a single copy of White Dwarf which I only had because I liked the artwork on the cover. I hadn't even watched Aliens at that point!
I dug out my rulebook from the Renegades expac for Space Marine because I thought I was forgetting a small detail and figured you would like this too - "The Chaos android is a shining skeleton of hardened plasteel. Its cunning construction is a secret known only to certain tainted Squat fabricators working in league with Chaos Renegades. Each android contains a tiny bound daemon, an animating spirit imprisoned within its plasteel shell by the conjurations of a Chaos Sorcerer. The contained daemon hates being trapped in this way and will do anything to escape, but is bound to obey any direct order it is given. The daemon will always try to interpret any command in as perverse a way as possible in order to avoid doing what it is supposed to. Chaos Androids are just as much daemons as robots and are therefore considered to be daemons for rules purposes, for example if attacked by a Librarian's 'destroy daemon' ability. They fight as troop stands, five models to a stand, in units of four stands. To represent the Chaos Androids' determination to deliberately misinterpret orders wherever possible order counters are placed in a slightly unusual way. Once all other order counters have been placed, including Eldar orders from a Warlock, both players roll a D6 for each Chaos Android unit on the table. The player with the highest score may place whatever order counter he wishes, so the Chaos Androids are still moved and fight under the control of their own side, but must do so with the orders they have been given. This means that sometime their orders will be inappropriate because the bound daemons have perverted the command they would normally have been given." So they are bit like other Chaos weapons where a bloodthrister is bound into a magic axe as punishment or a lesser daemon into a talisman. Another note is that Chaos Daemon engines are fully daemonic constructions with sometimes multiple bound daemons. The Lord of Battle is a bloodthrister bound into a siege engine, for example. I imagine that some are honorary like the lord of battle, but most are punishment for failure. There is a nice illustration, that might be duplicated in Space Crusade somewhere of several androids walking beside a dreadnought and they all have 8 pointed chaos emblems on their front skull , khorne symbols on their left rear shoulder blade, and the world eaters symbol on the right shoulder blade.
@@johnmiddleton4291 Cool. Thanks for sharing that, it’s really interesting. I took a look in the Space Crusade books and there isn’t a picture like the one you describe (which is a shame). When I first got the game I didn’t think the androids were from part of the larger lore. Just like when I first got HeroQuest I didn’t know what the gargoyle really was!
Man i got given this game too young & didnt look after it, lucky i got to play it at my friends place years later but i wish i still had my original game, there is a digital version of it on Amiga which is cool but just not the same
The first time I herd of Space Crusade was after I got my own UK copy of Hero Quest off of Ebay because of the inserted add. It's had my curiosity ever since. Before I got my own copy of Hero Quest off of Ebay, I only got to play it on a friends US copy & I don't think that edition had anything related to Space Crusade in it.
have you got MB's Battle Masters? my mate Sam had it and we use to have to move his mum's coffee table to play it on the floor, the board was massive, I think it was connected to games workshop?
Battle Masters was the third collaboration between MB Games and Games Workshop (the others being HeroQuest and Space Crusade, of course). Games Workshop provided the setting and miniatures, MB Games did the rules. I had it as a kid, and it was pretty exciting to fold out the big polythene battle mat and push massive blocks of miniatures around. I don't have it any more and while I would pick it up if I saw it at a good price, it's not something I am rushing to get. Avalon Hill did recently muse on the idea of bringing it back, but I doubt they really would, especially after they just failed to revive HeroScape.
Thanks a lot for your vids, I love those retro games, and they are so lovingly presented here! I would need a little advice from you all, I would like to sleeve my Space Crusade cards. Which sleeves exactly you use (there are many out there, with so many different qualities and dimentions...) ?
There are so many great retro games, I could be here all day listing them. I actually have a new video going up today for a classic GW game - The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb. It's from the same range as Chainsaw Warrior, Chaos Marauders, Fury of Dracula, DungeonQuest, Talisman, Block Mania, Valley of the Four Winds... You can pretty much name any old GW boxed game and it's worth checking out. Except for maybe Trolls in the Pantry.
Awesome man. I guess what I’m saying is I really don’t know much of the retro games. I grew up in FL in the 90s and no one really played these games. So I missed a ton of games and don’t know which ones exist. I’ll look up the ones you mentioned. And can’t wait to watch your new video.
A lot of the GW games have come back in different forms. Classics like Blood Bowl, Warhammer Quest, Space Hulk, Lost Patrol, and Necromunda all got new editions (in some cases - most notably Warhammer Quest - very different to the originals). I've covered all of those games in varying degrees on my channel and blog. Games like Talisman, DungeonQuest, Block Mania, and Fury of Dracula have all had new editions from other companies under licence as well. It's a bit of a rabbit hole. When I first started out I was a blogger mainly focused on retro games, so my blog (link in any video description) has lots of reviews of old games as well.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Any? All? I kept coming across it reading review of the new Aliens game and it really sounds like something GW should reprint. Last edition was about 2014 I think?
@@glenndean6 It seems to be one of those games they reprint whenever the accounts need a shot in the arm. If you're looking around, I recommend avoiding the second edition. Some people may disagree, but it was the weakest version as far as I'm concerned. Of the two newest iterations (2009, 2014) go for the later one as it has a little bit more content and some tweaked missions. But really, any is good.

Yeah, I used to enjoy the computer game. As with other old games like HeroQuest, there are plenty of 3D print files and people offering 3D printed replacements. I'm only interested in original components which is all I cover in my videos, but 3D printing has definitely made completing old games a lot easier for people who want to go that route. It's worth searching for StarQuest, which was the alternative name, as many people have items listed under that as well as Space Crusade.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yeah I remember you saying from your hero quest videos you only want original parts :) I left the 3D printing stuff incase anyone else was interested👍

That's interesting. Thank you for that.
Thank you SO much for this video! I literally stumbled upon this and clearly have been missing out! Now to find a copy...it looks AWESOME! Cheers, Ryan
Oh Space Crusade is the best. There are some playthroughs on the channel if you want to see it in motion before buying.
What a great game! Still holds up after all these years!
It really does. I still have so much fun with it.
I am going to get my copy out tomorrow. Great you have the numbers and pieces. I loved the little story and art in the rule book as well.
@@TrentRosenbaum Yeah, basically HeroQuest and Space Crusade were the start of a very slippery slope for me too!
Such a great game!
That one, Space Hulk, and Crusade (and Talisman) were great investments for the Games library. Some games can languish unplayed or rarely, but not those!
The magnetisation sounds interesting. I'm pretty certain, this was not even a rare option at the time when these games were new.
I've never seen a copy for sale with magnetised marines, but I'm sure people must have done it. I should be looking at doing it pretty soon.
That is cool. Between Space Crusade and Epic Scale it seems GW already has everything need to just keep making by making the occasional reprint.
It's a great game. Unfortunately, I doubt we will ever see a remake.
The minis look surprisingly good, considering their age. The Dreadnaught is definitely a distant evil cousin of Ed 209
Old White Dwarf magazines are great to leaf through. There's so much fantastic artwork and old painted miniatures.
I actually imported this game from the UK to the US about 2 years ago now. I've only played it once (so far!), but it's such a great game. Was such a shame it was never released here.
I'm not sure why it never got released in the US; seems like it would have done really well. It really is a great game.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring cool! Looking forward to it.
the original genestealer had only one body type. the one in your hand. there were then 2 arm variations, the version here with its 4 arms "level" and the space hulk version with its arms at different heights. these along with the plastic tyranid hive warroirs in the advanced space crusade box made the core of my nid army throughout most of my teenaged years. good memories
Darktide very much has vox comms as part of the game. 😊
Awesome video, very thorough. Feels like we are 30 years late, lol!
naaah.... 20 years ;)
Thanks for watching. I don't like to think about the fact it was over 30 years ago when I first played this!
A blast from the past. Always liked this game as a step into the WH40k and Space Hulk universe. By the way, the Genestealer bodies are very much alike the one´s in the first edition of Space Hulk while the arms are not. The claws have a different shape and the angle of the hands is different.
Ah, thank you for that. It's such a classic pose for genestealers.
I dug out my rulebook from the Renegades expac for Space Marine because I thought I was forgetting a small detail and figured you would like this too -
"The Chaos android is a shining skeleton of hardened plasteel.
This means that sometime their orders will be inappropriate because the bound daemons have perverted the command they would normally have been given."
So they are bit like other Chaos weapons where a bloodthrister is bound into a magic axe as punishment or a lesser daemon into a talisman.
Just like when I first got HeroQuest I didn’t know what the gargoyle really was!
thanks
Man i got given this game too young & didnt look after it, lucky i got to play it at my friends place years later but i wish i still had my original game, there is a digital version of it on Amiga which is cool but just not the same
The Amiga version was good fun, but nothing beats pushing miniatures around a board. It's amazing how well this game holds up, even now.
That would make sense as it was never released in the US, unfortunately. I am sure it would have done well.
Urge to get out the printer and some spare tactical Marines try and recreate the game
It would be quite an undertaking, but I'm sure it would be very satisfying to do.
have you got MB's Battle Masters? my mate Sam had it and we use to have to move his mum's coffee table to play it on the floor, the board was massive, I think it was connected to games workshop?
Battle Masters was the third collaboration between MB Games and Games Workshop (the others being HeroQuest and Space Crusade, of course). Games Workshop provided the setting and miniatures, MB Games did the rules. I had it as a kid, and it was pretty exciting to fold out the big polythene battle mat and push massive blocks of miniatures around. I don't have it any more and while I would pick it up if I saw it at a good price, it's not something I am rushing to get.
Avalon Hill did recently muse on the idea of bringing it back, but I doubt they really would, especially after they just failed to revive HeroScape.
if you carefully run a little thin super glue around the edges of your card doors and walls it will help stop fraying
I use PVA. All that’s to come in my restoration vids. Thanks for watching.
Thanks a lot for your vids, I love those retro games, and they are so lovingly presented here!
I would need a little advice from you all, I would like to sleeve my Space Crusade cards. Which sleeves exactly you use (there are many out there, with so many different qualities and dimentions...) ?
I am away from my computer to check for certain but I believe I used Sleeve Kings Yucatan 54x80mm.
Hey Mate,
Can you make a list of retro GW and other boxed games that are still good today. I see you’ve done a few but are there more?
That's it. Time to track down a copy of Space Hulk.
Which version? Space Hulk is a classic but I'm very happy with my 2009 edition so it's unlikely I will be picking up any of the earlier editions.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yeah, if only I could find one affordably ... probably going to save my shekels for Cursed City!
@@glenndean6 That's exactly what I'm doing at the moment!
I wish I can get a copy
I have a boxed set and the game on my Amiga 500 it's a straight conversion
I think there is a pc version of it
There are also files I've seen on thingiverse for most of the models
For people missing models
Yeah, I used to enjoy the computer game. As with other old games like HeroQuest, there are plenty of 3D print files and people offering 3D printed replacements. I'm only interested in original components which is all I cover in my videos, but 3D printing has definitely made completing old games a lot easier for people who want to go that route. It's worth searching for StarQuest, which was the alternative name, as many people have items listed under that as well as Space Crusade.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring yeah I remember you saying from your hero quest videos you only want original parts :)
I left the 3D printing stuff incase anyone else was interested👍
@@Spardin It’s a really useful option, especially for the really rare stuff like Wizards of Morcar. Some of the HeroQuest 3D prints I’ve seen look amazing.
Do you mind sharing what size sleeves you used for the cards?
Of course. I’m going to cover all that sort of thing in my restoration series but they’re Yucatan 54x80 from King Sleeves. The same type I used for HeroQuest.
Excellent, thanks!
OH! It never had a US Distribution? No wonder I have felt like an idiot for missing it!
Yeah. Not sure why it never made it over there.
Many serpents very alpha legion
I guess you're right. I hadn't even noticed, really... but then... not being noticed is what the Alpha Legion are all about.
Can’t find any of the marines on eBay. I’m missing one yellow, 2 blue. Any information on best place to find buy from?
Are you in the US? They are harder to find there. You can find them easily enough on eBay UK. Searching for “space crusade multi-listing” turns up a good option. International shipping may be rough though.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I’m in Cheshire, uk.
I'm looking forward to more space crusade videos whatever you do. Ive got the same complete box and im interested in magnetizing my marines
I'm keen to get into it, but this copy came into my possession a bit sooner than expected. It was my plan to have HeroQuest and Advanced HeroQuest done first, but I'm changing up the schedule now!
Didn't this game come with multi meltas and lascannons too? I'm sure I have a couple glued onto 40k marines that came from space crusade
Those weapons are from the Mission Dreadnought expansion, which I’ve also covered on the channel.
