U can't just put it in the front and climb down rocks, that's out of the discussion, u can't see your holds, can't have good mobility with your hands. Dropping it down step by step it's a good ideea, not what shey did of course because he could've lost all of his stuff, but that's way more safe that puting it in the front. The safest way is to have a rope and drop it down safe and easy

Agreed, wilderness survival and natural terrain navigation are FAR more difficult to fully prepare for than urban exploration... Any single rock could have caused mechanical injury and left him helpless and with 1 liter of water. lol/// this was a harrowing adventure for sure... but he did it. like he always does.

In climbing we have a saying; there's old climbers and there's bold climbers but there's no old, bold climbers.
As someone who lives right next to High Tatras I can tell you you are quite lucky. In a winter or summer season helicopter comes almost every other day to pick up one or more tourists who didn't survive their "hike" or were badly injured mostly because they weren't prepared or the weather changed. Some of those drops were a little intense to watch but other than that it was really impressive. Maybe next time don't risk that much since mountains do not forgive any bad move. High Tatras aren't that big and there were 56 dead tourists just in 2022...

to be fair he's been climbing all kinds of things for years at this point, a lot of which were arguably more dangerous so he's pretty comfortable doing it now

The trail starts at Predne Solisko (2117) 01:38, he points his finger at Strbsky Stit (2381) 01:52, then he sits at the peak of Soliskovy Hrb 02:32, panorama from left to right: Prostredne/Velke Solisko (2400) - Strbsky Stit (2381) 04:02, etc. etc. The trail runs through the peaks of Mlynicke Solisko (2301), Strbske Solisko (2302), Furkotske Solisko (2320), Male Solisko (2336), Prostredne Solisko (2400), Velke Solisko (2412). You can clearly see three different mountain lakes - Vysne Wahlenbergovo pleso (left), Okruhle Pleso (upper right) and Capie Pleso (lower right) 12:57. Bystra Lavka mountain pass (2314) with a marked tourist route leading to Capie Pleso 14:01. The ridge goes through the peaks of Furkotsky Stit (2403), Hruby Vrch (2428) 18:49 + Strbsky Stit (2381) (his "deciding point") and Hlinska Veza (2340), the two peaks which I am not sure he made it to. He is descending to the Hlinska Dolina valley (the valley on the northern side as opposed to the southern valley with the mountain lakes he filmed) 20:37 25:00 28:33. He returns back through the second valley following the marked route (Hincova Kotlina, Mengusovska Dolina) on the southern side (the different one) the next day. Male Hincovo Pleso mountain lake 29:45.

I hope no one tries to replicate this. This is extremely dangerous. I don't know which time of year it was filmed, but in summer weather in Tatras is quite tricky. The biggest issue here is being exposed to the lightning. If a storm would be approaching you basically have only one option and that is to rapell quickly to lower altitude. The route that he has taken is not the hardest and can be done solo. But you should have at least some mountaineering experience and proper equipment.

Seeing you climb those rocks without any sort of harness or other safety equipment was scarier than seeing you climb on top of the duga or other buildings. Great video as always! Stay safe!

Yeah, especially with all those loose rocks. Rocks like that can sometimes be hard to notice before you put your weight on them.

Agree! The Real Sounds of the wind, water, footsteps, birds, etc are more relaxing and interesting than any music can replace.
The original sounds and noise give the immersive experience like we're there with Shiey.

the fact that shiey basically free-climbed all those steep cliffsides whereas people usually have years of experience attempting stuff like this.. i had about 15 mini-breakdowns throughout this video and I'm watching safely from my bed lmao. just please please be careful with mountains! They are so unbelievably unpredictable and I'm not even taking the weather into account. Love your videos tho

Tatra mountains? Those are not dangerous/scary as long as you don't act like complete fool.
2 Tips: 1) Downclimb backwards when it's steep, so you are facing the wall. If it's technical, dont worry about filming. 2) bring like 20 meters of very thin cord like paracord, or dyneama so you can lower your pack down instead of tossing it. Weighs a few grams, so hardly anything. Love the videos, keep getting after it!
Climbing down backwards, facing the wall, is super important, I agree. Last year in the pyrenees I saw two young german dudes climb a very technical and steep section (25m straight down) facing forward. I could hardly watch. (They made it down, though)

As a fellow slovakian i can say that this is definitly the most terrifying experience i have seen on slovakia in my life, please never do this, this takes months even years of planning and you got extremely lucky with the weather. If it were to even have a slight drizzle of rain youre screwed because all the rocks will start being wet and very moist. I have been to the tatra mountains many times but freeclimbing on them is out of thought for me, thank you for making the video but man dont do this ever again.

Can’t help to appreciate Shiey’s way of planning and handling things. I noticed that in a lot of his videos already.
He plans ahead, sets small realistic goals, re-evaluates the situation constantly, and changes/adjusts his plans depending on the circumstances and how he feels.
It’s very important and no sign of weakness if you’re not sticking to your plan by any means, but instead do what seems reasonable and right for you.
It's probably why he's still alive quite frankly. He rides right on the edge but knows how to not go off it (figuratively and literally).

Setting realistic goals and adding at least one extra buffer time can save your life in the mountains. Every time and every day.

this is scrambling, not climbing. still an impressive send but the risk factor is wayyyy different. For about 80% of this trail if he slipped he would have rolled a few feet and stopped. If you slip during a free solo climb its a vertical freefall and almost guaranteed death. Not to take away from Shiey's accomplishment, you're just confusing it with a very different sport.
For sure the craziest thing you've done on the channel. The rocks on the mountain were sketchy as hell. That being said, this was a stunning video. You've got great instincts Shiey. Stay safe, stay free.

Hi from Slovakia! High Tatras are our most dangerous and deadliest mountains, if you never expirienced them before. I am surprised you risked so much. There is so many news about unexpirienced tourists having to be saved from there every year...so many of them also die. There are set of rules, how to survive this mountains and the drastic weather and tempeture changes, that could cost you life - like always plan your trip, be prepared for any weather and start up early in the morning. You wanna be returning down, around noon. Anyways, good luck!

I moved into the mountains a year ago and with inspiration from your videos it's changed my life just getting out there away from where others normally go. Just please remember the mountains have their own rules and they need to be respected. Always bring the proper gear for the season and when storms roll in during the summer immediately get below treeline if possible.

I've done most of this path, it's quite alright, but the really dangerous part is that he went alone! Never go hiking in such places alone. We've had many famous climbers die this way, going alone on what would otherwise be a not-so-tough trail, but all it takes is one loose rock and you fall and break your legs. Don't be alone!

Coming from an experienced alpine Solo-Trekker: I expected a lot more rookie mistakes, to be honest. It was a good decision to abort mission halfway through. It would have been very unsafe and extremely dangerous to attempt a ridge traverse in your unrested state. Alertness and physical strength are paramount when attempting risky routes like this one, especially when one isn't experienced in alpine terrain (although your highly developed sense of balance served you excellent). Also, I can tell you from experience that if you had managed to soundly sleep for 6-7h, you likely would have been in an adequate physical condition to attempt the traverse on the second day. Good sleep makes ALL the difference.
Suggestions: adjustable trekking poles are a great way to descend some tricky slopes. They can be in the way a lot of the times when you need your hands, but you can drop them a couple meters down and pick them up again. They will provide you with plenty of options to better and more safely balance yourself on the way down. Plus, hiking without poles nowadays feels for me like driving a jeep with the all-weel drive disengaged. Feels like I'm missing half of the traction that I can put on the ground if I'm not walking with my poles.
Also, consider getting a Garmin InReach device and a satellite subscription, if you're planning to do more alpine solo adventures. It's like a satellite phone, but it only does sms (and weather forecasts for your exact and specific location at the time). It sends straight to the satellite, so as long as you've got an unobstructed view of the sky, you've got reception. Worldwide, no matter where you are, no matter the infrastructure (doesn't need any cell signal). This device lets you call SOS with the push of one button, in case of need. The SOS call goes to a emergency center and if you do not further respond, they will send a rescue team to your current location ASAP.
For everybody that is doing possibly risky stuff in mountains or otherwise remote places, I highly recommend getting one. It just might save your life one day (or the life of anybody else that gets injured in your party/that you happen upon on the trail).
Fully agree with walking poles. Used to laugh at them when i was a teenager but been using for 20+ years now and can't imagine going hiking or scrambling without them.
Also, they greatly reduce knee strain.

There was a guy who posted a video about his idiotic decision to backpack 15 miles solo on snowshoes that weren’t rated for backpacking on his first time ever snow trekking and did not turn back when he was running out of food and water.
Then was complaining about his rescue team not wanting to spend a night camping with him before hiking out.
You are responsible for your own life, the garmin is for events that occur outside of your control! Always turn back if you are low on food or water.
You can come back and complete the hike later but you can’t get another life if you lose yours.
Love your videos, I'm a little jealous but very happy for you! You clearly enjoy this so much. When you talked about how the mountains make you relaxed and you just want to get lost there for a few hours, then you cut to the majestic view. That's exactly how I feel!!

Just done a similar ridge walk on Crib Goch. It’s a fun hobby, scrambling. More fun than a hike, ropes not needed as it’s not steep enough.
I guess you don't like adventure and challenging yourself... having fun while exploring nature and trying something new isn't for everyone I guess.
@@BendwowI've been watching Shiey for years mostly due to how much I love doing the same type of stuff he does (obviously to a lesser degree, I could only dream to be as badass as him), but this is by far one of the sketchiest videos he's uploaded.
Mountains are incredibly unforgiving, especially mountains like this, with that amount of loose rocks and treacherous footing. Love of adventure and "having fun exploring" aren't enough to get you through something like this - you need an incredible amount of grit and an insane amount of physical skill.

I'm so happy that Shiey visited the Slovak mountains! This was one of his most challenging and dangerous trips. Almost lost his phone and backpack with supplies, but he showed no fear! I was hoping to climb someday too. Stay safe.

this is the best action thriller I have seen for 20 years. For reference, I grew up close to the Alps in Southern Germany, so compared to a properly prepared and equipped tour what you accomplished is even crazier to me than someone who has never been on a high alpine tour. Much respect.

Absolutely something I need after a long and stressful time at work. I love climbing mountains, as I've climbed our Mount Paektu many times. The Tatras are the pride of Slovakia, the mountains even have their own endemic species from the Nebria tatrica ground beetle to the Tatra chamois (a subspecies of Alpine chamois; a type of goat-antelope or caprine). We miss the days Slovakia was socialist as part of Czechoslovakia. Thank you so much for getting out there and creating something so unique. Sending much love and take care!

If the lakes you're passing by in 13:05 are the Bystra Lavka pass, and the river you are by in 21:50 is Poprad, then you weren't very far from "Rysy" which is the highest Polish Tatra peak. Greetings from Poland, mate!

Mountains are a whole different ball-game, even for me only growing up in the Mountains never really been a climber/mountaineer myself, I know of the volatile conditions and risk of fundamental change of conditions in minutes.
Up there in the Mountains, Equipment is the Key and preparedness King.

Lukas, no chance, horses don't walk these paths anyway :) - Never say never, though. 11 years ago, I was also pretty sure i would never, ever make such a crazy thing like a paragliding flight, and now, I enjoy paragliding.

As a Canadian who loves hiking in the Rockies, I can't tell you how much I enjoy these kinds of videos. The mountains are such beautiful place, and I'd recommend anyone that lives near a mountain to go explore it!

Istg this is the most nerve-racking yet for some reason inspirational stuff out there. No cheesy speeches, no bs; just a guy climbing mountains, almost making me cry when those rocks rolling down, making us think: “it could've been you” yet so grateful he's made it safe in the end.

I was trekking Tatra mountains last weekend and thought it would be soo cool to teak from those peaks to peaks! And then I found this video where he literally lived my dream!!! 😍❣❣
Shiey please don't throw stuff in alpine terrain for your own and other peoples safety. You can never know what/who is below or what avalanche you might trigger. You also might loose your stuff when you can least afford it safety wise. Always have a good (paper) map and compass with you. Always know where you are on the map at a given time. Rocky terrain only with shoes that support the ankle. If you twist your ankle you are often done without help in complicated terrain. Check weather beforehand. Plan your route well. Measure your average ascend/descend rate to improve your planing. If you plan to do multiple peaks/days plan a descent route for every section of the hike in case weather deteriorates. Alpine territory can become a very inhabitable place quickly, even in, and sometimes especially in high summer. Many of these things you probably know already. The mountains are a beautiful piece of this world. Stay safe!
Goddamn man! As soon as I saw the video title I was like "this will be the best thing to watch on this calm Friday evening" I clicked right away. After 10 seconds, when I realized you were in my home country, I was really taken aback and it brought a smile to my heart. I've been to the top of some of these peaks, but I only stuck to the hiking trails, obviously😁. These views and your bravery gave me chills throughout the whole video. Dude, you're so amazing! Those mountains may not be the tallest, but going through the paths you've chosen without any harnesses is sick AF! 🤌I love seeing you enjoying our small country! I remember when this guy was train surfing wayyyy back. But this, this is the first time I've really just had to comment. Cause this is just awesome man. Shiey can climb but more importantly he moves quick. He only had a couples days of supplies to make this happen but the man never fails. Much love.

The way you mix the beauty of the places you visit with the problem-solving part and the enjoyment that comes from attaining goals...this kind of stuff makes some amazing videos. I loved every second of that! You rely on your gut feeling and instincts so well. It makes you human, part of nature. We often forget we are born on this earth as part of its nature and ecosystem. We forget how to listen to our body. This is such a good example of how you should rely on your gut feeling and to be honest with yourself and your goals.
As a climber my advise is to always face the rock , don't ascend facing away from the wall (in some instances ) but let me tell you , you did a great job 10/10!
Funny i hate heights and would never go on a journey like this... but that was my first thought, i would have gone down facing the mountain so i can hold on to something... But then again, it is hard to see from a camera perspective...
My guess is that he thought being able to see his descent was safer (even thought it probably wasn't). Honestly though it's a bit weird, because in buildings he climbs down facing what he's on, so I don't know why he changed it up for mountain climbing/scrambling.

Great video as always. Love that you finally visited Slovakia :) . But people, dont think of doing something like this too. These type of trails are most dangerous in these mountains. There are like 70-100 deaths yearly in these mountains so please be careful and just go through the marked trails. Dont wanna see in news that someone else has died in Tatras again just because it looked cool as Shiey made it.
Are there bears living there
@@leepizarro Yes mostly in forests that are located lower, somewhere around the level of Shieys starting point, thats why its also a national park. Going off trail is also illegal because of animals living there besides to protect people from such climbs.

Hey Shiey, word of recomendation for you.
If you have the chance or time, make a staff. Doesn't matter whether it's taller than you or half your height.
It's a good walking tool.
It can help you climb extreme heights (mountains, windows, walls, trees, etc.)
You can pole vault across jumps with it.
It gives you a 3rd point of balance.
It can be used as a self defense tool.
It can extend your reach.
If it's strong enough, you can use it as a improvised bridge or tightrope.
It can act as a shelter pole with a tarp.
It's lightweight.
And it's really cheap to make.
Also to anyone backpacking.
Your sleeping bag will be noticeably warmer if you can unzip it and hang it out to dry every couple of days.
The bag accumulates moisture from your body every use.

A pole wouldn't serve him on this trip, he is literally alpine climbing and needs both hands free most of the time...

There's a difference. What you're talking about is the vertical climbs, sure there's limited use here. What we're talking about is slopes. Wet grass or crumbling rock, wet rock faces. It can easily be as slippery as soap. This is where a stick or pole comes in handy. What you can do is jam your pole into rock crack or dirt (wet grass patches), then place your foot in the wedge to arrest your descend. The danger, if you don't do that, is that you risk tumbling down. Just like that backpack, there are no breaks. At worst, your head smash against a rock and the lights go out. Your bones crack. You can twist your ankle. Since you don't have a pole to act as a crutch, now you have to jump/limp back down. That's not what you want to do. People don't use poles because they like looking like an 80 year old. They use it because it works.
No matter how many times I would watch your videos, they're amazing, and giving amazingly feeling of being there's witch you while you exploring all these areas. They're do look kind of dangerous.

I'm sure Shiey won't see this, but reference losing camp in the dark: it would be worth taking a glowstick, or similar to mark camp.
I have a keyring on my keys that has a glass tube in it which glows for 25 years+. It's only small, but in the dark of the mountain it would be like a beacon to help you find camp again...

@@alexjohnson1612 Valid point but in that the risk is only produced by the lack of knowledge. If he had known that it had a safety space it would've not actually been a dangerous thing to do. This is dangerous from all points of view imo.

Can only recommend, as an Austrian living in the alps, I mountaineered once in the tatras too, great climb etc, however pick for the beginning a safe one like just a hike to the peak, after that try routes that are mapped out, after enough experience going off course can be pretty fun
As an avid Mountaineer, seeing you do this without proper training or equipment leaves a bit of a sour aftertaste. On the other hand, you do have a pretty good sense of what your abilities are. Glad you made it, stay safe!

@@loljakebored07 Aside from lack of actual equipment (even proper boots) he was for some odd reason ascending facing AWAY from the rock wall which is exceedingly foolish

@@loljakebored07 One thing I noticed... he was descending facing the wrong way. Also you should never kick rocks off the mountain. It's just a simple rule because somebody could be beneath you. Those ropes were there for a reason. Climbing these rocks can be a lottery since they are very prone to break off, like he noticed. Doing this without rope on those parts seems foolish.
Well, he climbs old rusty crazy tall abandoned structures and towers with no safety gear, and has broken into heavily guarded military buildings before, just to be able to enjoy the view from some tower. If you watch his videos, he has been on the edge of death thousands of times yet somehow always makes it. I think living on the edge and taking crazy big risks is kind of his thing.
I used to clib and hike when i was about 13 - 16. Now it's been years since i last did it. This video gives me motivation to go back outdoors explore the world
This is what shiey does. He is not risking his life for content. He is just bringing us along with a camera to show what is giving his life meaning and being free. Might be an adrenaline junkie. Sure there is risk but it's living unlike being addicted to street drugs. I really enjoyed it. For some reason it didn't give me vertigo like some of his rooftop and tower climbs do.
