  • In this video, I will show you how I prune Japanese maple bonsai trees during the fall season when they started dropping leaves in mid fall. It's a good time to see the structure and growth from the previous spring/summer seasons, determine which shoots to keep/eliminate, remove unnecessary buds etc. All of these would help the tree focus on the growth on the right places in the upcoming growth season next year! I avoid doing any major cuts now and will wait to do that till later winter or early summer.

What a fantastic way to enjoy a cup of coffee the morning after Thanksgiving. Your trees are looking better and better, my friend!
Oh, and great choice for a backdrop at your work station. What is that, a fillet cutting board? It works great! Limited shadow and no shine.

Thank you! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving day! It's a hockey shooting pad :) I play ice hockey so I use this to shoot pucks sometimes :)

Thanks for making videos with actual tips and explanation on why you do what you do in your bonsais. Very helpful to beginners. 🙏🏼
Now what do i do if a junction in the apex is already swelling up?

Thanks for watching! I would eliminate some of the branches and buds that are causing the section to swell up in late winter & seal it so it will heal and all the energy in the spring to grow other areas and heal up the wounds. 😁

Nice looking tree. A ? If I keep my trees outside all winter should I wait until spring to prune? I’m worried about the tips dying back to far if I trim back in fall. Thanks

Yes at this point, I would wait till late winter/early spring to prune!

I just found your channel. Its awesome and very relaxing! The song reminds me of Gramatik, Just Jamming. Dope song! With this mid fall style of pruning. Do you do that with trees that are in the next stage in development?
Just started with this hobby and my Acer has a small trunk.. so im letting the grow......Or do i need to do this style of pruning also? For preporation winter and spring? I live in the Netherlands, the tree has shed his leaves and its about 5 to 8 degrees..
Thank you. Time to check the rest of your video's.
    Greetings Luuk.

Hi Luuk, thank you! Glad to hear you enjoy my videos!! I do this for most of my trees unless I want to leave them alone for regaining energy, developing sacrificial branch(es) or secondary branches.

It was late Fall and had to start cleaning up the trees - I could have waited till they naturally drop all leaves but I wanted to start early.
