Hey Carol, I use Clonex for rooting. I just ad a few drops of soap and a dash of alcohol in a small amount of water. But only when really infected. Normally I do not bother.

I used your bag method for some juniper cuttings in January after seeing you suggest it on BNut and had success for the first time after several failed attempts and they’ve rooted! That reminds me - I need to take some cuttings of the fancy field maple I found a couple of years ago. The mother is doing well in a pot and i promised to send out a few kids at some point. 🙂
This video’s golden, yet, I have a question for ya… 😁 I’ve done the same exact steps shown in your video at the beginning of June and now I can see that the majority of the cuttings are still alive and should’ve rooted. It took 7.5 weeks for this. Now what should I do? Let them grow (not under direct sunlight I guess) in the same pot together till I see more substantial growth or would it be better to repot? 🤔
I leave mine where they are for the year. Slowly I will get them used to drier air by opening up the baggie. Maybe around leaf drop, or else in early spring will I take a look, lift them from the pot and plant them up properly. Hurrying the process is a recipe for problems!
Finally, Waited for this video. Pruned my maples already and put them in perlite pinebark coco coir substrate. Will try vermiculite next time I take cutting. Thanks for all the helpful tipps.
Another top quality instructional video. I have always struggled to get my maple cuttings to strike so I am using sphagnum this year but will also not try to be so greedy with lengths of cuttings!
I’ve found through trial and error that putting the pots/flats with the cuttings on the ground contacting the earth makes a significant difference in strike success! I’ve had better that 80% success with the flats of cuttings sitting in the ground! Mother Earth power!
❤ QUESTION and comment: - When you say “No sunlight”, do you mean no DIRECT sunlight? I have a few places next to my house that have no direct sunlight. Or, I could keep in my basement if no sunlight needed. - This is the best video I’ve seen so far! Makes me feel like I actually have a chance of success.

Hi joanne, once these are rooted they have regular survival as other maples. Grafted arakawa has the downside that the nebari does not get the rough bark. I have 2 mature arakawa on their own roots (see my videos, one of them is in there). They are on their own roots too.
Hi Bob, not I am not trying to sterilize them. Just getting rid of some aphids. The mix is the same as I use for spraying: Maybe a spoon of soap & a shot of spiritus in a liter of water.

@@pablosuarez7602 - the end of the video explains some of the things at the start. The soapy water is used to rinse off aphids that were present on the cuttings. The cuttings were chosen from new growth areas near the top of the planting.

As soon as I see the first buds starting to open up. That for me is a sign of the tree (starting to) root. Mind you, if a cutting just sits there all summer, I do not fertilize. Whereas if they start pushing 6 weeks after taking the cutting, that is when I start

Hey Dan, great to hear from you. I am going to have ton answer based on hear-say. My understanding is that arakawa roots very well, also from well-aged trunks. I am planning on giving it a go on one of my old arakawas next spring, so I know from personal experience how that works!
Hi Silvio, yes. (And as plants create oxygen.. It will create more by itself). I am not completely sure of the process of it, but I have not had any problems putting them in zip-lock baggies. I do every few weeks open them up to check.
I found out that hygene is very important. I desinfect my tools and I microwave the substrate untill it´s hot. I let it cool down and it´s sterile. I have way less rotting cuttings that way.

I've just tried this method today per your instructions exactly, but for propagating Box Elder (Boxelder Maple) trees and also White Ash trees. My goal isn't for bonsai, but for adding big trees for the birds and for shade in my back yard. I will give an update in 8 weeks!
@@Soul_N_Control I do not need to water normally. I do every month or so take them out, wash them and flush the soil. Let them drip dry and putthem back in!

I am not sure whether it would work. But.. Give it a try. What have you got to loose if you are pruning anyway? The bag provides a mini-ecosystem. As the plant produces O2 and CO2 and uses both, it seems to work without trouble

Really good, I had no success with the coco coir last spring. I have a question, I've let my Trident maple get more than 1 meter tall so it could thicken the base... It is said that large cuts are made on the winter, since sap flow it's slow, almost null. But if I want to make those long sacrifice branches into cuttings, would it be on the winter? or I would have to wait till late spring to make those big cuts? Same situation with air layerings, you do on mid/late winter or late spring?
I have never understood why people want to make big cuts in winter. In fact, today I have taped a new video (Out next month I am afraid, lots of editing). In this video I take a rotary tool and carve a big chunk of trunk away. I do this NOW because the tree is nice and actively growing. It is right now responding to the damage, sending all energy straight to the damaged site to repair. Do this in winter, and you have to wait till spring for it to start repairing. I make big cuts in mid spring to summer. Which would coinside with airlayering in spring and then separation in summer.
@@GrowingBonsai Well, because people say that once maples got active again, they would bleed a lot throught big cuts... Also maybe because it would induce the plant to bud on the right spots once spring comes by? Idk, all the maple care is really new for me.
@Albanus35 The period from around late feb to the start of growth is when maple roots start pushing juice into the trunk. (Think maple syrop!). If you trim in that period some water comes out. But nothing to the extend that it will seriously harm it. After that, once the leaves are out, bleeding is virtually non-existent :)

It is still early days! The weather has been bad here, so I do not expect any roots yet. I will most likely only check for roots in late summer, early fall.

That was such a great video! Very informative! I and my sister decided to plant our Japanese maples using this method. We have Bloodgood, Beni kawa, Tamukeyama or Scarlet Queen (I'm not sure which one we have), and a green Japanese maple (we think it is a Weeping Green Laceleaf). So far, it's going on pretty well, except that one or two wilted. When is it obvious that the cuttings have rooted? Is it normal if they wilt? We will be very grateful for your help. Thank you!
Can cuttings be stored somehow? My parents live long distance from me and will be visiting in late June, I’m wondering if they can take cuttings off their Japanese maple now (or soon) and keep them alive until they come to visit me in late June and I’d process them then, use the rooting hormone and planting them.
I rooted maple cuttings in small screened pumice, as it allow air movement around the stem.. I also used the same timing of early leaf cuttings…a horticulture professor told me it was beginner luck

I have one red Japanese mable growing here in cold Finland and it somehow have survived many winters. Last summer I tried to grow cuttings of it but did not succeed. I will try again this spring with your advice.
I'm new to it , my first attempt at propagating was a pink blossom cherry tree non fruit edition. I put growth hormone on the twig that came up from the base of a big tree I should have put a baggie around it because it got burnt on just a small amount of sun, still alive and giving it more attention

I'm attempting this for the first time off a mature adult maple tree growing near our house. Hoping it goes well! I may be a little late to do a cutting, but I was challenged to plant a tree this week and show a progress update in August after we move to Oregon from Indiana.... so I need to get a little creative. Going to do some cuttings from a yew bush as well to see if that works better.
@@TreeGuyTy1 the move went well, but ultimately the tree didn't survive after a few months. The yew survived a bit longer than the Japanese maple did. It was a fun experiment though!

Be extremely careful to not plant directly in your yard, better let them stay in pot for one year. Hopefully you can update the results in 2024.
These cutting which were placed in the coir didn’t stand a chance because it was way way too wet.

somehow smaller cuttings seem to do better. I am not sure why this is. Any indiciation yet whether yours will root?

Oh, I just got to the part you mention hardwood cuttings.
I have never understood why people want to make big cuts in winter. In fact, today I have taped a new video (Out next month I am afraid, lots of editing). In this video I take a rotary tool and carve a big chunk of trunk away. I do this NOW because the tree is nice and actively growing. It is right now responding to the damage, sending all energy straight to the damaged site to repair. Do this in winter, and you have to wait till spring for it to start repairing. I make big cuts in mid spring to summer. Which would coinside with airlayering in spring and then separation in summer.
Let me know how you go on the hardwood cuttings on trident. I have not been succesfull with tridents yet.
@@GrowingBonsai Well, because people say that once maples got active again, they would bleed a lot throught big cuts... Also maybe because it would induce the plant to bud on the right spots once spring comes by? Idk, all the maple care is really new for me.
@Albanus35 The period from around late feb to the start of growth is when maple roots start pushing juice into the trunk. (Think maple syrop!). If you trim in that period some water comes out. But nothing to the extend that it will seriously harm it. After that, once the leaves are out, bleeding is virtually non-existent :)

Thanks for sharing this video. It’s a huge help. I successfully rooted some softwood cuttings of Japanese Maple last spring. I live in Zone 6 Ontario. How do you winterize these tiny newly rooted Japanese maple cuttings?
I do not really treat them different from the rest of my maples! If concerned you could keep them just above frostlevel for a winter.
Does the bag not need some inflow of air?

Did the vermiculite & cocopeat have the same results?
It is still early days! The weather has been bad here, so I do not expect any roots yet. I will most likely only check for roots in late summer, early fall.
Do you already have an idea (at the end of September) which medium gives the best result: vermiculite or cocopeat? am very curious!

That was such a great video! Very informative! I and my sister decided to plant our Japanese maples using this method. We have Bloodgood, Beni kawa, Tamukeyama or Scarlet Queen (I'm not sure which one we have), and a green Japanese maple (we think it is a Weeping Green Laceleaf). So far, it's going on pretty well, except that one or two wilted. When is it obvious that the cuttings have rooted? Is it normal if they wilt? We will be very grateful for your help.

They do not really wilt for me. Rooting.. Can take more than a month to be visible. Patience is key.

Can cuttings be stored somehow? My parents live long distance from me and will be visiting in late June, I’m wondering if they can take cuttings off their Japanese maple now (or soon) and keep them alive until they come to visit me in late June and I’d process them then, use the rooting hormone and planting them.

I rooted maple cuttings in small screened pumice, as it allow air movement around the stem.. I also used the same timing of early leaf cuttings…a horticulture professor told me it was beginner luck

I have one red Japanese mable growing here in cold Finland and it somehow have survived many winters. Last summer I tried to grow cuttings of it but did not succeed. I will try again this spring with your advice.
I'm new to it , my first attempt at propagating was a pink blossom cherry tree non fruit edition. I put growth hormone on the twig that came up from the base of a big tree I should have put a baggie around it because it got burnt on just a small amount of sun, still alive and giving it more attention

Stek poeder zou ook moeten werken. Ik ben een paar jaar geleden op de gel overgestapt en heb wel het onbewezen gevoel dat het beter werkt. Substraaat staat wel in de video, is vermiculiet (Welkoop / boerenbond verkoopt dit oa)
Do you have to cut off the growth tip for the cutting to produce new growth? Or can you leave them?

Will powder rooting compound work or does it need to tbe the gel variety?
I think the powder should do the trick too, but I have the unprooven feeling that since I started using gel, I have better success.
What kind of soap and how much rubbing alcohol?
I use regular dishwashing soap. Just a few drops
I have successfully rooted cuttings of all kinds in perlite
I have a lovely little tamukeyama in my flowerbed at the house. Been meaning to propagate but never have time!

I am not sure what you mean with drain the bag. Once closed it is mostly closed. Only nearer to growth will I typically water

I'm attempting this for the first time off a mature adult maple tree growing near our house. Hoping it goes well! I may be a little late to do a cutting, but I was challenged to plant a tree this week and show a progress update in August after we move to Oregon from Indiana.... so I need to get a little creative. Going to do some cuttings from a yew bush as well to see if that works better.

@@TreeGuyTy1 the move went well, but ultimately the tree didn't survive after a few months. The yew survived a bit longer than the Japanese maple did. It was a fun experiment though!
