Ok great video but I do have one flaw to pick at I have cut new growth that were green and had newer branch grow come from the cut after 2 weeks

When should you prune Japanese Maples? I heard they bleed a lot in the spring.
I have several potted JM's which are not bonsai, however I apply certain principles to keep them dense and compact. I do any stripping of deadwood and heavier structural pruning in the winter. Once it buds out in spring I wait until the growth to harden off and around early July mine all tolerate some light thinning out to open up the structure to see the branches and create levels. This allows enough time for a second flush of growth into more dormant buds before autumn. My massively rigourous sango-kaku will happily sprout shoots over a foot long in the spring which go way out the desired silhouette of the tree. I cut these back to 1 or 2 pairs of leaves. Whatever you do make sure your tree is healthy, if it is it will happily tolerate sensible pruning and a bit of sap loss

I found this video helpful. Remember though that Japanese Maples are much hardier than people might think and will tolerate sensible structural pruning (removal of significant branches/trunks) in winter as long as you leave a good amount of tree for the energy to be directed into in spring. Just make sure you make a good clean cut at the collar of the branch. Some people use a special wound sealer after cutting large branches. I have never done this although if a cut lies flat and level so that water may collect in it I sometimes put a dab of vaseline on it to prevent this. Keep the root ball happy in good soil and you'd be surprised just how robust these excellent trees can be.

Is July okay to prune your Japanese Maple?
Mine looks like a mop and the beautiful twisty branches and trunk are completely hiden along with the sidewalk due to all the lower branches laying over the walkway.
Can I apply this principle to shortening the trunk of a deciduous tree I collected from the wild? It is an ash of maybe 4 years, with a slim trunk about 20 inches tall. It was growing under a dense spruce so it is tall. I would like to cut it back to 12 inches, but all the leaves are clustered at the top. Would I kill the tree if I cut the trunk at 12" in Spring before it leafs out?
How can I reduce the gap between internodes?
Is this the mechanics of most trees?
I have eight J maple saplings of diff cultivars... hope they survive SoCal's dry & hot climate, also with not much needed chill-hours during winter.

On a grafted maple how do you hide the graft please
You just have to wait. If its planted into the ground and allowed to grow the trunk will thicken quicker and even out. Failing that you can hide it somewhat by turning it side on to the front so it's not so visible
