Whenever I was in a Wal-Mart lot, alone, I had a great trick. If I was leaving to go into the store, I'd exit my RV, lock it, and start to walk away. After 2 or 3 steps, I'd stop, turn around, and open the door again. I'd stand there and pretend i was having a conversation with my husband. Like, "What flavour?", or, "Do you want pre-cooked or raw?" Then I'd pretend to be frustrated and walk away. It gave the impression that i wasn't alone, and my husband wasnt allowed to come with me because he was a human sea monster.😊
Yes, the idea of saying the word “we” is really wise. I even go so far as to lie to people and say, “my husband and I” and I’ve never been married. Putting two chairs out is smart, as well. Parking to drive OUT is essential. I’ve always found (and told children and women) that LIES that keep you safe are NOT LIES. They are life savers.❤ Love you guys.
I’m a female solo tent camper…always 2 chairs, and few “manly” items of clothing (shoes, sweats or shorts thrown over a clothesline) and a firearm (or pepper spray or bear spray). I also have an 80 lb pit bull: she’s a big wussie, but she will definitely deter someone! Looking for an RV now, getting too old to sleep on an air mattress! Thanks guys!!!
I have a Doberman who is a big baby. She is way too friendly. But I wouldn’t let anyone know that if I’m alone. I’m married but my husband is disabled so I do all the driving, set up, and tear down. That puts me outside alone often. I put our useless dog on a leash and keep her with me.
I just travelled through Canada and up into Alaska by myself with my dog in my Sprinter. I have another month of travel. I always say “we” because I am traveling with my dog, never thinking it’s a good idea as a solo woman, LOL. I simply trust my gut and am aware of surroundings at all times. Unless I am in a campground, my van is in a ready to go mode before I go to sleep. I leave nothing outside and have the van parked so I can escape forwards or backwards. I also have several defensive items within my van close by in case I need it. I love traveling alone. Women have to deal with way more issues as far as security than men and always have, whether it’s solo van living or just living day to day. It’s simply a sad fact of life. I personally refuse to let fear control my life. I love your videos. You two are refreshing and wonderful. Walk in peace guys!!
I'm used to traveling alone because I'm a trucker. I've bought a small class c for my upcoming retirement which includes my protective dog and the 2nd Amendment. If someone picks me for a victim I'm gonna make them regret it. Just because I'm old doesn't mean I'm nice. I don't bother anyone and I refuse to BE bothered. I sure don't mind the size of my rv, compared to living in a semi my rv is a palace with a bathroom and kitchen...luxuries! Plus I'm already used to bathroom "challenges" and being very frugal with water. I'm sure the drastic changes for people accustomed to regular life will find these things a bit of a challenge but don't give up on your dreams...you can do it. Happy trails, my friends ❤.
I haven’t lived in an rv but did drive from the west coast to Missouri alone. Honestly, I loved it. I had only one frightening incident on the way with a big rig riding my bumper cuz it said Cali. Thank God a little truck came from out of nowhere, I mean nowhere and got between us waving me on to make distance from him.
Yes, you´re right: To trust our intuition is very important! My husband an me never stay at a spot where one of us feels unsafe. And we nerver discuss, why one feels unsafe... And also yes: many "normal" things take a lot of time in a camper van. Thanks for sharing your experiences and greetings from Germany!
I can relate to so much of this. I'm new to it and I thought I would just be breezing around floating from here to there. I quickly realised I had to have a plan, and I can see how I could get planning fatigue, and also lonely sometimes. I love learning all these things though. And I take safety seriously, when it doesn't feel right, move on. Love your vibe and video, thanks for sharing 💕
Some really good tips. Thank you. I am a solo traveller, and my channel shows that, so I can't really hide it. I don't tell people where I'm going beforehand, but I let them know when I've left the area. Love your channel, thanks for sharing your tips/life/experiences. Best, Kaye
My husband and I were short-term and weekend campers until we were at a campgground on Claremore, OK, on May26 when we were sleeping in our travel trailer and it was rolled over in a direct hit by a tornado. We were too far from town to hear any sirens, my phone setting had changed and did not sound a weather hazard notification, and the campground security car had to take cover before we were warned. It was a miracle that we survived. My point is that every camper should stay weather aware and find out about the weather conditions and notifications they need to know in case they need to go to a near by sturdy shelter. Be prepared and have a plan for what you will need to do to be safe because riding out the storm in a van or RV is not the best plan.
We stayed in a free campsite once......and ONLY once, the dodgy stuff that was going on we didn't sleep a wink. Now we always stay on van parks, they're cheap and they're safe when I'm by myself and Dave is happier when he can't come with me. So glad you've made this an open information discussion.
As a single female who tent camps with a young child, I always take my 2nd amendment with me. I was approached once by someone claiming to be a ranger. He invaded my personal space and I declared that I did not have to be a sharp shooter at such a close distance. He left pretty quickly.
Well, I’m glad I’m used to living alone for a long time. I don’t get lonely. I cherish my solitude and all the things I do because there’s no one to object to my choices. The hardest for me would be the minimalistic living. I love all my extras, the choices of different clothing each day, my many shoes, jackets/long coats, and I love having all my kitchen gadgets. I do love the RV living but I don’t think I’ll do it full time.
Well I’m going to van life in 5 years and I started cleaning today as a hurricane approaches. I filled a large garbage bag of shoes and a garbage bag of bathing suits and swim and old clothes hanging in my closet that I haven’t worn in a year. There’s something freeing to the sole letting go. My stuff will no longer own me😎
@@JL-mc2dx Good for you! I know it’s a lot of time and mental gymnastics to sort through many things. I have work to do as far as going through my closets but it will never be to a point that it would fit in a van or an RV. I’m still working in a professional setting and I need most of my things.
Great information. I am “learning” how to roam. My biggest find is I spend too much time trying to figure out where to stay each night. And not enough time just flowing. Still working out balancing the miles a day and what to see while meeting my need to know where I am spending the night. I’ve had flashes of things being idyllic, but sort of mirrors life. Moments of perfection, not endless perfection. On the organization, I laughed. All my efforts to organize always end up in “cram and store”. This inability to organize is inherent and lifelong. I theorized years ago “An organized person can become unorganized, but an unorganized person will never be organized”. After two great trips I have made friends with the fact that part of van life is moving stuff around all day. Thanks for the great videos. I am jealous you get cat snuggles. Happy miles and many smiles
To acclimate pets that are not used to traveling, give them a controlled environment to check out and explore your van or RV BEFORE departure day. Cats are particularly sensitive to new places and need to explore where their box will be placed. They will eat and have their water source away from their box. Do you eat next to YOUR port-a -potty?
I had zero safety issues as a solo female nomad 10 yrs....I did however find that sleep, care of the stomach, bladder, bowels, and general hygiene makes it a non-idyllic lifestyle. Health definitely takes a nose dive.
So we have to spend months and thousands to actually get into van life before we are allowed to know why you had such struggles for ten years? I've seen videos about how well people sleep, so how are supposed to just figure it out? I would genuinely like to understand what problems you had, and why...
We got our kitten when he was very young and the dogs raised him so he acts like a dog he doesn't use a litter box he goes out with the dogs outside and goes to the bathroom. Which I had an old litter box that belonged to my mom and her cats that was cleaned up and put in storage but at the time he just wanted to be with the dogs so that's how he is. So that's one thing I would not have to worry about. One thing I do first before going anywhere is check with my bet if she knows any vets in that area even if it's from back when she went to school and then I worry about finding Specialists that I can go to for my health issues. The fur babies always come first. I so enjoy your channel keep up the great work.
Most important items to have by your bed within reach: flashlight, keys, bear spray, dog leash, and most important of all, remember to check/lock your doors just before bed 🚌
I had to subscribe because I fell in love with y’all!! So much good advice. Thank y’all for sharing. I’m a 70 year old East Texas girl & used to solo tent camping & loved it.
Also keep large men jackets out on chairs when it’s cold, as many men items as you can to make it appear you aren’t alone. Keep bear spray on hand too, a great line of defense
Thank you Dave and Tonya. After a few years of being out of van life, my husband and I, and our kitties are headed back out. The situations you talked about are all so true. We are looking forward to our new adventures equipped with your suggestions re: I overlander. BLM properties. It's been since 2010, yes that long, since we have done van life. Soo many good changes and challenges. Needless to say, we are older now soo thank you both so much. Be seeing you hopefully soon perhaps in our adventures!❤o
Solo female van life is less safe in high crime urban areas, as it is for EVERYONE in high crime urban areas! After 18 months in both tourist and remote areas, I haven’t even met someone creepy. I did leave one boondocking site because it didn’t feel good. I use apps, maps, and weather forecasts to plan my travel-since I can’t afford campgrounds, I have to have a couple potential spots lined up every time I move. My 90-lb, barky pup serves as my early warning system and predator deterrent as well as companion. I’ll never be a minimalist, sadly, so organizing and putting things away are a constant. Is it always easy and fun? No, especially when your social security is below the poverty line. Some creativity and resilience, and willingness to take the time to work through the issues that arise are key for me. Would I rather be in stix and bricks? Not on your life! Maybe when I’m 85!! Great video
Hi Tanya and Dave, You know that I'm a true fan! I don't do RV life and that's why I love watching you and Dave! I like how honest and real y'all are! Schooling the other RVers is absolutely great! The information you're getting out is important!!I will always watch your videos!! TO THE BEST COUPLE EVER!! from Tricee in Virginia Beach, VA😊 ⛱️🏖️🏖️
I lived in my car for 10 years. I didn't travel far or much. I stayed in places i knew mostly or always have plan B C. Along with chairs I had a pit bull people only knew Pit not that she was like a kitty cat 😊 people looked the other way because of dog Always have a plan food sleep entertainment driving gas etc.😊
Wait, so you lived in your car 10 whole years and had a Pit Bull? I'm a Pittie mom of 3 and really want to rent an rv so we can travel for a bit. But I'm really intrigued by your story😊
You're a super cute couple with great positive energy! And your fur babies are adorable...! 😻😻 Glad you get to enjoy them on the road and they get to enjoy you too! Thanks for sharing the female solo myths/tips. Very helpful for a hopeful "one day" solo van traveler with a small dog.
Quit tip for bikes mounted to RV or Van. Use a cable lock as one of your tie-downs. It will make it more difficult for someone to take your bike. You might even be able to also use a U lock or 2. But the nice thing about a cable lock is it can take the place of other straps and do double duty of both securing the bike to the rack, but also making it harder to steal.
I enjoyed living in a travel trailer in my 20s and again for a short time in my 50s. I liked being able to go live in a new town. Travel trailers have bathrooms, showers, and kitchens. I couldn't live in a van without a bathroom and shower. I have a mobile home now in the desert, surrounded by a 6-foot fence on an acre with 7 large dogs. I only go somewhere if I have to.
I'm heading out for the first time with my amazing precious sweet darling sick cat tomorrow, I have been finding it very overwhelming to find where to park for free without having to pay for campsites... ioverlander only gives us places that are like stealth street parking where I can't keep the back of my SUV open to cook any food.. or to put up my privacy tent for my bathroom... So I overlander unfortunately has also not been very helpful because of that reason... I've watched so many of your videos and it was all so helpful! How do y'all find good boondocking spots that are safe? Like legit boondocking places that an SUV can go that is not four-wheel drive?? I love your little family so much! 🙏🧿❣️
#5 This was my biggest worry getting into RV'ing. This is our second season, we go on long trips mostly. Occasionally a long weekend somewhere local. The black and grey tank are not a big deal if you follow some basic advice. I thought it was going to be way worse, and it really has been super easy. I could never do a cassette toilet. We use our RV toilet as a family of 5 and I just stay on top of keeping everything clean. Matt's RV tank treatment is awesome, having a black tank flush and a hose flush inlet on the drain. No issues. Make sure everything is connected well and you don't even smell anything. Ya'll should consider a black tank RV for your next rig.
Good points. But... you don't have to boondock all the time. I bought into that hype the first year. I didn't like it. I spent less money this year staying in campgrounds and staying longer. I have never stayed in a Walmart. Don't want to. I stay in campgrounds and have made a lot of friends. And you forgot to mention when you have dogs you have to physically take them outside. They don't use cat boxes. I meet more women solo campers than I do couples and solo men. Women are pulling 5th wheels and trailers.
I recommend always parking in a way that you can quickly get out anyway. Sometimes in the morning a lot of additional cars come and the suddenly it’s not as easy and boom your stuck. 😅
I'd like to add, not just keep your keys handy but if there is a fob you can use that in case of an emergency.. you may not see the person but others in the area may, and it could help others! Alos, even if you live in brick n mortar with the crime rate increasing its better to be safe than sorry ;0)
Females travel along and also put out a large dog watering dish and a large chew toy. No one will know if there’s a dog there or not you could be out walking your dog and coming back.
This really doesn’t have anything to do with the content, though it is great. I just wanted to say your voice is awesome. Great to listen to. Love 1:23 your video.
It's me and my daughter doing this here in Florida, and I agree, the way vanlife is portrayed isn't what it's cracked up to be. This lifestyle chose us so planning wasn't an option
I am really enjoying your videos! Very helpful information for sure. I just bought a 2006 Chrysler Grand Touring van. I had it checked out by a reliable mechanic and plan to get it on the road here in Texas to start out and then go fulltime next year. I have questions about how and where do you get fresh water. Will I need to carry a long water hose? I never see that talked about much on any of the videos I have been binging for the past few months. Keep up the great work! Thank you!
Did 5 months on the road after I sold my house, went around the entire US looking for a new house to live in. Some days I wished I'd never sold my house. Solo, it was not always as fun or easy as they say. But we all have to stop at Wall Drugs "in that part of town."😁. Then Little America for $0.75 ice cream cones. I thought the tourist part was fun!
What make/model is your rv? I love that it seems easy to maneuver and it has space, because I have 3 dogs currently and would love to know about your rig would work for me.
Hey Tanya, i know you play call of duty. Another good game is tomb raider or play unchartered!! Don’t know if you have played those? Thanks for the tips and tricks!! ❤
I have a caveat to your constructive recommendations. That is you're coming from the perspective of an occasional solo traveler which is a heavier lift than someone who does this routinely. For example, I'd compare it to running; the more you do it the easier it becomes. So things like planning, surveillance, and preparation becomes automatic (second nature). And solo travelers usually have their viewers/family/friends to bounce ideas off/assistance. However, I can say having a second hands to help with driving would very much be helpful 😃
Hi Tanya and Dave! You did a great job Tanya, but I know you must have missed Dave. You both make a great.couple! Also Dave like your hair, minus the few grays. 👏🫶✌️
I've never traveled in an rv but I thought If i'd be in a location I know nothing about, wouldn't it be a good idea to seek the advice of local law enforcement for a safe place to spend the night?
I finally opened my hatchback and made a fire after about 4 months and relaxed and their came the ranger or you but you flash your teeth and there's somebody walking by you get up in the morning and there's someone driving slow by
I think I'd feel more safe with a 🔫 on the road but I know there's laws with carrying over state lines. Not to mention the fbi report on 300+ active serial k's using highways at this very moment. The world is just not safe for women in general but you're right: intuition and being aware of your surroundings goes a long way.
heh, i go out camping i never meet anybody, i am usually as far away from total strangers as possible. try to find a spot nobody will be even driving past let alone stopping or parking next to me... if in a camp ground i can choose my spot, the one farthest away from everyone else every single time. if i was driving around my actual home out there... i would be even farther away from total strangers if possible. i go out of my way not to talk to total strangers, if i waiting for them to finish at a spot,, dropping money in a box, looking at maps on the little wall at enterance, at dumpster, whatever. i will wait 25 feet away until they leave then go do what i need to do after they are gone. .. i wont be rude if they talk to me first.... but i generally do things in such a way they do not even get the chance to talk to me.... i probably would not even talk to the two of you if stumbled upon you camping somewhere, ya i know who you are.... but i dont actually know you, just drive by oh there is those you tube couple, nice.... well i need to park far away so i dont get on a video would be my first thought lol. and i am sure you would not want some total stranger deciding to park next to you JUST because they saw a video of yours either.
@@YeshuaKingMessiah nothing strange about trying to not to be surrounded by total strangers at all. what would be strange is purposely getting up in the middle of all them people for no reason at all. no more strange than wanting a house with plenty of room between you and the neighbor rather than wanting one where you can knock on their bedroom window from your bedroom window like most modern developments.. that is what is strange... may as well just be an apt. that 1 foot seperation is pointless. a house should stand alone, not right on top of the next one and the next. If I wanted to be surrounded by total strangers, I would just go to a bar or casino.
Who in the world would even think having pet's in an RV full time would be easy. My thoughts are that would be the biggest challenge of all. Second only to getting I'll and not having the comfort of home and a full private bath 😂

it's a sad reflection on our days that you have to take all these precautions. Be careful everyone.

Use `happy camper` to reduce smells from number 2 so it won't effect you
Thank you beautiful people! ❤
As far as a bubble bath you could always rent a hotel room for a night and just really clean the tub and take one there
We travel with our little 13lb dog, Violet. She travels well and loves camping. We are very lucky. She is very scared of thunder so that can be hard.
Try a thunder shirt….they work!
I dropped a duece in a bucket for the 1st time just recently in my van.. im new 🤷♂️
😂😂😂 congratulations!
Medals on the way😂

I had to subscribe because I fell in love with y’all!! So much good advice. Thank y’all for sharing. I’m a 70 year old East Texas girl & used to solo tent camping & loved it.
Thanks for the misconceptions of RV life.
Safe travels!
You are very welcome Yvonne! Thanks for watching!!
Also keep large men jackets out on chairs when it’s cold, as many men items as you can to make it appear you aren’t alone. Keep bear spray on hand too, a great line of defense
Tonya. You and Dave are so realistic about RV life. I cracked up on your up front and real description of emergency Pooper Trooper use.
Two chairs and a large pair of men's boots
Thanks for the great tips! Love the large pair of men’s boots!
@@LetsTurnItUpWorld welcome and I love tuning into you two and the kitties
Also, empty beer cans on the ground, empty ammo boxes and a gun cleaning kit.

Great video
These videos are so informative, I will be revisiting as we get closer to getting our own .
Thanks so much Melody, we are glad that you found the video helpful! When are you getting your own camper van?
Hi Tanya and Dave,
You know that I'm a true fan!
Great information guys! Thank you for sharing. ~Stay safe😊
You are very welcome, thank you!
Thanks for the Good Info! Safe Travels Guys!
You are very welcome Rooney, thank you so much!
Great tips thanks for sharing
Good tips! I love watching you guys! Safe travels ❤
I just thought of this - make a recording of a ballistic barking dog to play if you’re inside a van, and someone is around the van.
Excellent video very informative. Thanks for sharing.🤗
Very very usefull!❤❤
Great video! It’s funny how some people have so many misconceptions about camping! Keep up the good work! Happy Camping and Safe Travels! ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻😺😺
Reversing into a spot makes it easy to make a quick exit.
I'd like to add, not just keep your keys handy but if there is a fob you can use that in case of an emergency.. you may not see the person but others in the area may, and it could help others! Alos, even if you live in brick n mortar with the crime rate increasing its better to be safe than sorry ;0)
Really love your channel 😊
Thanks so much!
Females travel along and also put out a large dog watering dish and a large chew toy. No one will know if there’s a dog there or not you could be out walking your dog and coming back.
Stay in safe overnight campsites! Staying in Walmarts and other free spots really open yourself up to bad situations!!!
Yep, all the casual, I just go to “any” bathroom 🙄.
Thanks for the great info! Happy travels❤
Excellent épisode. Thank you!
Great information, very helpful
Glad it was helpful Eleanor!
Love this channel!
This really doesn’t have anything to do with the content, though it is great. I just wanted to say your voice is awesome. Great to listen to. Love 1:23 your video.
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for the helpful tips!!💖💖
The background music makes your video difficult to listen to.
These are great tips😊
Thanks Susan, we are glad you find the tips helpful!
My buddy Ruger is the best companion, especially in open carry states. This eliminates uninvited conversations and visitors.
Right…always safe and everything working fine! 😂😢❤
You are in my last video towards the end where I am watching your video. :)
That is good advice, for sure. It would be nice to have some suggestions for small, quick meals on the go. What do you think?
It's me and my daughter doing this here in Florida, and I agree, the way vanlife is portrayed isn't what it's cracked up to be. This lifestyle chose us so planning wasn't an option
How’s your experience? Overall, do you feel safe living in a van with your daughter?
@aryanva8735 safety wise, we are fine, comfortability is another story.
U were forced into ur van
In Fla that’s miserable. It’s sooooo hot
@YeshuaKingMessiah yes, yes it was!🥵 but we've since left FL 🤗
@@Snicoleliving to where? I'm in a similar situation and preparing to leave after the hurricanes but also because it's so hot and humid here.
You guys are great and i love your two kitties. How have they adjusted to van life? I'm guessing there's no 3am zoomies...😂Be safe you two!💕
I am really enjoying your videos! Thank you!
I don't think Dodge vans have water tanks
You need to take your own, inside. Like 1 gallon jugs.
Have you thought of. Trying out Bean Teardrop trailers instead?
How about meal planning? Eating out gets expensive, so what about cooking your meals?
Thank you so much 🌻
Did 5 months on the road after I sold my house, went around the entire US looking for a new house to live in. Some days I wished I'd never sold my house. Solo, it was not always as fun or easy as they say.
But we all have to stop at Wall Drugs "in that part of town."😁. Then Little America for $0.75 ice cream cones. I thought the tourist part was fun!
Thank you stay safe God bless you guys
You guys are awesome
What make/model is your rv? I love that it seems easy to maneuver and it has space, because I have 3 dogs currently and would love to know about your rig would work for me.
Hey Tanya, i know you play call of duty. Another good game is tomb raider or play unchartered!! Don’t know if you have played those? Thanks for the tips and tricks!! ❤
Thank you for the tips! I will have to try those games out!!
Harvest Host and Boondockers Welcome are great to join for Van lifers
Hi Tanya and Dave! You did a great job Tanya, but I know you must have missed Dave. You both make a great.couple! Also Dave like your hair, minus the few grays. 👏🫶✌️
Maybe camp only in states that allow cross state carry travel.
When alone, carry and camp in carry states. Otherwise the byrnas for non carry states.
I'd love to do this, but my hubby has a bad back. We're not for that we would be right out there with you.
Thank you both for joining us virtually on all the adventures.
I've never traveled in an rv but I thought If i'd be in a location I know nothing about, wouldn't it be a good idea to seek the advice of local law enforcement for a safe place to spend the night?
I finally opened my hatchback and made a fire after about 4 months and relaxed and their came the ranger or you but you flash your teeth and there's somebody walking by you get up in the morning and there's someone driving slow by
wasp spray it shoots 6 feet.
Thanks for the great tip!
You took the words right out of my mouth. The good thing about that wasp spray is they have to go to the hospital to have it removed🤩
you guys seem sweet. Be safe out there! New to your channel. My sig-other and I will start camping more and more
Yep, planning and decision fatigue in sticks and bricks so…❤
I think I'd feel more safe with a 🔫 on the road but I know there's laws with carrying over state lines. Not to mention the fbi report on 300+ active serial k's using highways at this very moment. The world is just not safe for women in general but you're right: intuition and being aware of your surroundings goes a long way.
Thanks for sharing! We appreciate it.
I have been solo van living for 3 years. Intuition and engaging your brain keep you safe.
HI TONYA AND DAVE 😊❤
heh, i go out camping i never meet anybody, i am usually as far away from total strangers as possible. try to find a spot nobody will be even driving past let alone stopping or parking next to me... if in a camp ground i can choose my spot, the one farthest away from everyone else every single time. if i was driving around my actual home out there... i would be even farther away from total strangers if possible. i go out of my way not to talk to total strangers, if i waiting for them to finish at a spot,, dropping money in a box, looking at maps on the little wall at enterance, at dumpster, whatever. i will wait 25 feet away until they leave then go do what i need to do after they are gone. .. i wont be rude if they talk to me first.... but i generally do things in such a way they do not even get the chance to talk to me.... i probably would not even talk to the two of you if stumbled upon you camping somewhere, ya i know who you are.... but i dont actually know you, just drive by oh there is those you tube couple, nice.... well i need to park far away so i dont get on a video would be my first thought lol. and i am sure you would not want some total stranger deciding to park next to you JUST because they saw a video of yours either.
U sound a little strange
What about this one: " your life will be easier, all your problems will disappear and it's cheaper living "
Who in the world would even think having pet's in an RV full time would be easy. My thoughts are that would be the biggest challenge of all. Second only to getting I'll and not having the comfort of home and a full private bath 😂
Do you have clear film for your windows for security?
Thanks, what do you mean “clear film”? We appreciate you sharing!
#4 would have been a good opportunity to mention caravanning
