- I've litterally just returned home from a short trip to Basel. I've just edited and uploaded this video as fast as could cause this is a very special one. Some days ago I got word that the Rada Airlines Ilyushin IL-62 was expected at Basel on the 28th of January. As you might remember I missed this bird in a cruel way at Madrid Barajas last year. So I took my chance and booked a two day trip to Basel. And so on a very windy tuesday I caught my first IL-62! It came it from Vitebsk, Belarus. It first flew past the airport on downwind. Then it made a super wobbly and mega smoky landing at runway 33 with such speed that it needed the whole runway to stop! Me and about 30 other spotters watched in awe. What a onbelievebly cool plane! 1.5 hours later EW-450TR lined up on runway 33 and did an incredibly speedy take off. That was because of the hard wind the only 600 kg of cargo: reliefequipment and medication destined for people in Syria. The flight went to Damascus. It was an amazing experience to catch this magnificent aircraft. Amazing sounds from the rear mounted Soloviev D-30 engines! It was perfect redemption after what happened at Barajas last year. This 34 year old Soviet plane started life in 1985 with Interflug and was converted to a freigther later in life. It's the only active civilian IL-62 in the world right now. Enjoy guys!

I watched them start and land every day when I was a child but never in such weather. To see this makes my heart beat fast and wonder how the pilots felt. They did a great job. The Il-62 is such an incredible beauty and also nice to fly with it. Love it forever. ♥

I live 30 mins away from BSL and i remember hearing those loud engines when she was flying over my house after taking off.
I was so shocked & excited when i found out that it was actually the IL62 i was hearing.

Speaking of Interflug there's a bar in Leipzig built on the wing of an Interflug Il-62. Very cool venue. You can book the interior for events such as dinners.

Thank you! Yes there are! There is this one which is the only active civilian one and there are a few military ones flying around too!
Air Koyro in North Korea operates four IL62s, two are civilian use and two are military/VIP. Rada Aero Belarus operate two modified cargo version. So only 6 are still in service worldwide
Bad Boy Bubby Russian Air Force operates a few too. Rada only flies 1 at the moment.

En dat met een vliegtuig dat niet alleen net zoveel rookt , maar ook nog eens net zo oud is als ik.
Tevens 1 van de weinige 62's die kennelijk wel binnen de Stage 3 geluids limieten valt.
Al is dit akelig goed te vergelijken hoe dat ik op school altijd over ging naar de volgende klas......

Haha Ik wist wel dat jij dit een gave zou vinden! Ja hij vliegt gelukkig nog. Ik had hem bijna op Madrid Barajas een paar maanden terug. Dus daarom was ik extra gebrand hem te pakken als ik een kans zou krijgen. Dankzij Easyjet kon ik nog redelijk goedkoop naar Basel toe. :) Heerlijk gevoel toen ie op de camera stond! Wat een ontzettend gave bak! Thanks en we gaan doorrrr

Does the rear tail wheel retract back into the body of the plane, or is it permanently exposed during flight? I don't see it ever go into the body of the plane as the other wheels go up. Love the sound of those four engines roar.
I think it just stays in its place during flight. Yes these engines produce an amazing sound!

Anybody knows what was the reason to change engines placing from back of planes to under-wings?
The IL-62 was designed to operate from rough runways. That's why the engines are mounted high on the back of the plane.
Engines below wings are easier to work on.
Boeing/Airbus Planes = Loud Buzz
Russian planes= EARRAPE SQUEAL!
