I don't think anyone mainstream news wants to bum everyone out with the fact that in the US we have only 2 bad choices right now. Lockdown again or have the 50k hospitalizations a day until it infects half the population ( I think those were the figures he quoted)

Because they are too busy running around like headless chickens looking for miracle cures instead of addressing the cold hard facts.
Thus we have the likes of the current obsession with "cloth face masks/coverings' despite the dearth of supporting evidence and data.
I despair at the lack of questioning of new research and political polices by media and opposition politicians.

Yes indeed, it beyond astonishing that anyone, let alone the leaders of our exceptionally great nation could ignore this existential threat... and disregard all of the strategies and plans that had been laid out to deal with exactly this sort of threat. I think it would be fascinating to discover how and why this happened... although I suspect that the explicating the nature of the failure would encounter the same denialism that continues to characterize our response to the virus.

@@accountinglavidalaguna2384 I Yes, Dr. Katz readily acknowledges the limits of his knowledge however that statement was made in the context of whether the U.S. is anywhere close to herd immunity; he deferred to Dr. Osterholm's expertise. The problem with this analysis is that a case of the common cold is not a public health issue. It is the serious cases, the hospitalizations that are significant. And the declining mortality rate suggests that we are learning how to treat the disease. We did lock down. But life continues.

The problem with comparisons to other countries is that as soon as they truly open up their economies, the case load will rise.
At this point, contact tracing in all of these countries will be absolutely useless because the vast majority of cases are completely asymptomatic.
Furthermore, his case load projection does not take into account the compounding effect of herd immunity.

    • @popland1977
      @popland1977 4 года назад

The difference with most other countries is that when they see the cases rise, they go back to an earlier phase of lockdown to prevent a spike, therefore making the level of virus manageable. For example, Ireland's R number went from below 1 to almost 2 in the last two weeks and as a result they have postponed removing scheduled relaxing of restrictions

I too appreciate Dr. Osterholm’s honesty but he and other health professionals need to remember that their opinion is only part of a decision. Has Dr. Osterholm considered overall mortality with his lockdown opinion? I notice that opioid overdose deaths are way up in the counties in my area for example. The Governors need to look at economics and the mental health of the people. Also will the public in their state tolerate another lockdown? In my state of Florida, I doubt it! Perhaps with more deaths, more people might social distance and wear masks though.

This is what I don't understand. Why don't the leaders in the various governments explain that the shorter shut down IS to save long term economic and mental health. This is why you guys are failing so bad. You haven't done the complete shut down like the rest of the world who is now enjoying economic opening had done. Not shutting down is going to wreck the economy beyond repair AND most people either ending up brain damaged, lungs or kidneys permanently damaged, psychotic or demented or dead.

If we are killing millions or tens of millions by the lockdowns and other actions, we need to consider if the they are worth it. I really hope he can do a podcast on the risks associated with reopening schools. It seems children are collateral damage for mainly an adult problem. Is it true that even with a vaccine, the flu is deadlier to children, etc (166 deaths last year vs 29 COVID). Sweden never closed elementary schools, no children died. Some school reopening plans sound eerily similar to how to run a prison. Plexiglass dividers (spit shields), Restraints (masks), Physical distancing, no socialization, no playing, no sharing, no eating together, no recess. Do children play a significant role in transmission? Can't we just let the children play? I'd love to hear Dr. Osterholm on those important questions. America really need his help with this. The American Academy of Pediatrics thinks we need to have kids back. Are we causing more harm than good by what we're doing to kids right now? It certainly seems to be the case, but I would love to hear from Dr. Osterholm. Thank you!

Well all I can say it's clear Dr. Osterholm needs to be on the President' s task force. A voice of reason and one who could adequately explain this all to the public. Even our local health department is not able to follow any guidelines other than CDC and doesn't have the foresight to think beyond CDC.

Hi Dr Osterholm, another great podcast. Thankyou. I've read there's a possible outbreak of a novel pneumonia virus in Kazakhstan, which China says is more fatal than Covid. Something to keep an eye on. It got me wondering if the presence of a virulent global virus can bring about the formation of other, similar viruses?

"Tell the people the truth." - Amen. But in Dr. Osterholm's talk with Joe Rogan in March, he said wearing masks didn't work (except for N-95s) . . . .

From a public health perspective, everything you do restrictively may improve outcomes. So even if cloth T-shirt masks only help a few percent, that will reduce transmission per thousand people.

He meant we should not falsely believe masks are 100% proof. Your mask protect others from you so it helps for everyone to wear one in public indoor settings.

The mask issue has changed. We were told that in March,so medical professionals could get them. The mask help it spread less. That brings the numbers down. That’s where we are today.
