How to PROGRAM your KEY REMOTE for FREE

  • HERE's HOW to program a new key remote on your Honda or Acura yourself for FREE!
This procedure was demonstrated on a 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 Honda Accord. The procedure should be similar for the Pilot, CR-V, Civic, Odyssey, Insight and Element as well as Acura EL, TL, TSX, RSX, MDX and RDX.
If your keyless remote is BROKEN, or you want a second set of keys, why pay the dealership to program a remote for you when you can do it yourself and save money? The procedure is quite easy and is as follows:
    1. Insert your master key into the ignition, then it on, press the lock or unlock button once, then turn it back off.
    2. Repeat step 1 two more times, without taking the key out of the ignition.
    3. Turn the key to the on position for the fourth time, and press the lock button. You'll hear the locks cycle, indicating its in programming mode.
    4. Press lock or unlock buttons on your first remote, followed by subsequent remotes that you want to program. The locks will cycle indicating it has accepted the remote.
    5. Turn the key off and pull it out of the ignition. Test each remote to see if it works!
    NOTES
Make sure you have all your remotes present when programming, as it will over ride your previously programmed remotes.
The system can store a maximum of 4 remote keys.
This procedure not to be confused with engine immobilizer programming, which is needed for a new key to start the engine. For that you'll need Honda HDS, a PCM code or a dealership / locksmith to program it for you.
New keys can be found on eBay. Look for keys with OEM electronics. A fresh key blade can also be bought on eBay, and the electronics can be transferred over. The keys in this video were sourced from junkyard cars.

@@matthewgarmendia7803 you can try an SBB Pro2 which costs $60-150 depending on where you look. It's software updatable and sellers tend to list the software version it ships with. You can also buy keys from a site like TomsKey or another site that sell single vehicle key programmers (on first use it locks to the VIN of your car) with their keys.
This video is for if you've replaced the remote electronics (ex: dropped key in a pool, smashed, etc) but still have a the immoblizer RFID tag from your key. If you have the immobilizer tag, you can move it from the old key to the new one. But if you have a brand new key your options are to clone it (some hardware stores sell keys with programmable immobilizer tags and they clone your current key so the car thinks they're both the same key) or better, reprogram the car to accept your new key and delete the old key (dealership, some locksmiths, expensive pro tools, hit-and-miss SBB Pro2 or similar tools).
If you're getting a dealership or locksmith involved, they're going to program the remote for you anyway...

@@Zytres You do not need the master key. My car came with one key fob and one standard (valet key) and somehow the fob was lost. I just purchased a new key fob on eBay for $35 from a locksmith who also cut the key and I did exactly what was done in the video. It worked and was easy to do. The only problem I have now is that the new key fob does not start the car. So now I have a valet key to start the car and a fob key to unlock/lock the car remotely. I was hoping I could avoid having to visit the dealership, but it looks like I will have to anyhow to get the key programmed to start the car. Sometimes technology can stink.

Automotive Locksmith here. This will not program the immobiliser chip, and this process is only for older Hondas. Now remotes are programed at the same time as the transponder chip. Therefore you can't program the remote part yourself, and even if you did, your key would not start the car.

I understand that this works for the remote unlock/lock functions. But does it also enable the key to drive the vehicle, assuming you get a locksmith to cut it to match the original? Or do you still need to go to a dealer to have them program it in order to drive the vehicle?

    • @simplycellec9614

No. You need to get an OBD programmer from ebay. There's a youtube video on that. Just put obd programming for honda and you'll get a dumb video, but in the comments, there's a guy who provides details on how to do it.

do these instructions, just hit the lock button 4 times on the new key.

From what I understand, this only programs it for lock/unlock; you still have to have it programmed to actually start the car. How much would Honda charge to do this, or can you do it yourself, and how? I have a broken key that still starts the car, but the remote part went out, so is there a way to just swap out the chip itself? Thanks.

    • @chabat124

The technique in this video won't program the chip that allows the car to start. The answers I have gotten everywhere I asked was locksmith or dealer. I called the locksmith - they weren't any cheaper than the dealer. But you can do no harm in trying the technique in this video.
