The premium magazine is a great way to build 2/3 really solid starter armies through kitbashing or allies. The first one is GSC, turning the guard into brood brothers and then buy a unit of pure strains. They can be used with either the GSC or tyranids. Which will get you 1490 points with brood brothers and the genestealers for GSC. Or 1000 points raw for tyranids.
Next you build either world eaters or black legion (or your own Khorne leaning warband) all the big models like the Deamon prince, hellbrute, and mauler fiend can be run in either, the legionaries can be built as normal or made into extra bezerkers. Lastly the space marines can be turned to chaos making some chaos terminators with characters. The infernus can be made into extra legionaries using the spare weapons. The CSM army in particular when bolstered with the space marines and taking bezerkers as allies comes in at 1690 point! Or the world eaters gets to 1415 (not using any other infantry besides the terminator and the two csm characters being made into MoEs) realistically you could make extra bezerkers out of the legionaries and maybe the infernus marines but idk how many blades you have to go around and you’d run low on heads. But I’d just sell them and the terminator characters/havocks and put that money towards angron for when you want to move to 2k.

So I'm the extremist with these things, built huge armies during imperium and doing the same here.

In terms of extras, if I'm only wanting a few duplicates I'll try to source those at retail, if I want a decent amount I'll preorder the cap of 5 copies at Forbidden Planet and take the postage on the chin.
Now that we know the Termagants are split across 4 magazines for the 20, which is terrible value compared to what on sprue fleshborer 'Gants can be picked up for right now, I've maybe overdone it with duplicate Leapers on issue 2 as I may end up just grabbing a couple of 40K starters for extra 'Gants. No real problem as the Leapers look to be holding a fifteen quid value so can move on extras of those. The Barbgaunts that aren't in the starter were well worth snagging extras though.

In terms of who it's for: people who want to play Combat Patrol. GW are increasingly pushing this idea of "collecting wide or collecting deep" - you can have nine small Combat Patrols instead of one or two huge armies. You get more varied building and painting projects, don't need such a big table so easier to play at home, no list building so no pre-game prep is needed - I can just give someone a patrol and teach them it like any other board game. It's a smaller scale and whole other world to the gaming club / tournament scene but it's also the way huge numbers of people engage with the hobby, and GW finally delivering product aimed at this group is welcome. (rather than delivering product clearly meant as a "stepping stone"- the biggest cost of moving from a 500-point to 2000-point army is a bigger dining table!)
For rules support, I'd note the rules will be in the magazines that come with the models! I'll be interested to see how they handle the extra mini in the magazine, but the partworks have always worked this way. They come with rules for playing the exact minis you get. They may not be the exact same as the core game, but you are able to play with them.

Good discussion chaps. Hadn’t considered the inconsistency between the models offered vs the actual combat patrol game mode. With the specials that some people sign up for to get the redemptor dreadnaught etc too; just not compatible with combat patrol - which is the name and point of the magazine. Marketing point I guess but what is on offer here is more than combat patrol. Interesting that they muddy the messaging in this way for new players. Cynically, it’s just about providing the additional eye catching models they hope people will plum for.

Something most people fail to realise is Newsagents only receive the first 4-5 issues of a new partwork on a SALE OR RETURN (or SOR) basis, where newsagents can return unsold magazines by a certain date after the publication date of the title after it's been on the shelf for a pre-set time.
If it's returned before that cut off date, the newsagents gets credit that goes towards their magazine supplier bills, every magazine and collectors cards/stickers are under this form of selling, with the EXCEPTION of partworks, they stop being SOR after the first 5-10 issues (depending on the partwork).
So Newsagents WON'T receive copies after that SOR period expire, now major Supermarkets and WH-Smiths don't have this restriction, so those are the places your more likely to find the partwork during it's entire run.
As a result of the SOR limits, most newsagents won't get in issues for people to "Cherry Pick" what issues they want, as they CAN'T get credit back for those unwanted issues.

Enjoying your guys content! Super new to 40 k. Got my first game of Combat patrol in last month, I've played 4 so far. I have 2 other friends who got into the game at the same time and 1 veteran player - the vet had all the units to form their combat patrol. It's convenient to get started and took a lot of the pain of learning every model in the army and trying to decide what is good and what isn't.
It's been fun, but I'll admit I'm already ready to bump up to plain 500 point games. Having just 4-5 units doesn't feel good when two of them get wiped out by some bad dice rolls by turn 2. Then you're not really playing the missions at that point.
My friend brought up boarding actions and I'm definitely interested. We were debating whether or not we would play next at 500 points with combat patrol rules or use big 40k rules - I think it should depend on what units we bring to the table. If all units have combat patrol rules then we agree to play by those ones but if any player takes a unit without combat patrol rules, we will play by the big 40k datasheets and can use combat patrol missions.
I'm ready to step up to 1k already lol.

    • @WorHammer40k
      @WorHammer40k  2 дня назад +1

Its always fun stepping up the points. I sometimes find it hard to balance a 500 or 1k point game as some armies just simply do better at small point costs. Just keep the games to a point where its fair and fun because as you mentioned, if you loose 2 5ths of your army its even worse at 1k/2k games haha
Boarding actions am really interested in learning/playing. Something different from the regular 40k games, means you can take a break from combat patrol whilst you wait for more models to come to build up your points!

Unfortunately, age of Sigmar has done a much better job with their version of combat patrol by adding special rules when purchasing a spearhead box which also has to be built as the units are pictured on the box.
It also has a random event deck and comes with a double sided special board specifically for spearhead and each side represents two different realms, which I think is life and fire ?
So depending on the mission and which side of the board, it tells you to use the spearhead rules include random special events that both players have to find ways to optimize their turn or get around any negative modifiers from the event deck.
Also, for some reason, I feel like a spearhead boxes contain value because they seem to come with more content and they’re slightly cheaper compared to combat patrol.
I remember when the new Necron combat patrol with the doom stalker with 10 Warriors, three scarabs swarms, three scorpion, destroyers, and an overlord with a tackyon arrow, which I still think needs a major glow up since the arrow can only be used once per turn only to have it completely blocked by a 4++, definitely something like devastating wounds or mortal wounds on a critical wound.
What I find ironic is that GW said that they were staying away from vehicles and monsters and other potential centerpiece models in the new combat patrols yet the Necron patrol comes with a doom stalker..lol

For myself I will give it a hard pass speaking while running 11 armies. There is just no value added from miniature perspective for long time collectors despite a few issues which I would need in multiples. The concept is just already outdated before the magazine lands and by the time it finishes we are in 11th already.

Considering GW print to order some models and say delivery can take up to 365 days, i dont see them cancelling the release abroad and just going with the postponement option.

Think I lost brain cells after watching and hearing this vidio as I was painting.
you are just a pair of 40k only nerds woffeling on about if its good for you when that combat patrol magazine is mostly targeted towards new hobbiest and collectors who wants a bit of everything.
Its also targeted for peaple who can't really aford to buy and paint a 2k army before the rules all change and get errata in fail 10th edition (no its not the best edition 40k is in as there are NO stability with its rules from the constant "balance" updates)
Also its more for people who can't decide wich faction to pick thats why there are 9 small armys for people to try out as they subscribe to the magazine and for collectors like my self who love to have a small army of each faction. Unlike you pair who and others who would spoil this product by buying multiple of the same magazine to get great deals and then try and sell them off as profit.

@@Kinaro666 wow, you had a lot to get off your chest there.
Of course there are folk like you who will enjoy buying, painting and owning 400-500pts of lots of factions.
But that's not the demographic either our channel or our videos are aimed at, is it?

Not sure you had any brain cells to lose in the first place if you thought that was worth you commenting, you bloody misery. Geez. If you don't like it, don't listen. Also you could add your viewpoint without being hostile to them about it. Just move on instead of complaining about people who spent their own time making this content. If you think you can do better, then by all means go and do so.
If you can't say anything nice...
Only stopping to tell you in the hope it will spare some other content creator in the future from having to hear receive comments like this from you again. It's ok to not agree with the video or the opinions, but don't need to be a jerk to do so.

im down in Australia... we have a pretty healthy group of new players playing kill team and combat patrol... 🫡 less brain load when you're learning... i'll be getting the mag to paint up spare armies for noobs to play with... seems like a good investment for the group...
