When you said the piece wasn't wide enough for the top, I was expecting you to just cut it and add a walnut racing stripe in the middle. You blew my mind with the herringbone veneering - such a terrific look. I've said this before, but you could switch to making dresses and I'd still watch all your videos because I'm here for the entertainment value more than anything, but the fact I also get useful creator tips, woodworking skills and innovative solutions to problems (like a slab that ends up too short) is a joyous bonus. I look forward to these every week!
Love the way it turned out. I also like that you found a solution and didn't let it stop your progress. Another solution that more of us weekend hobyists might do is to cut the top and insert an accent piece like walnut or something.
Alternatively, you could add removable drip trays underneath the bars to prevent water/snow melt/sand/mud from falling onto the shoes on the bottom shelf or onto the floor.
Thank you. Loved this vid and the Carlin clip. Love your positivity, even when things don't go right. Your videos always brighten my day. Greate Idea on handling the conduit problem. Definitely something I'll have to keep in mind.
David really like how it turned out. Hopefully you get great use out of it for many years to come my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God bless.
I've had an idea for a shoe organizer for a while but I just haven't had the time or the money to do it. It involves those cardboard tubes that you see when they make columns with at least 8 in diameter ones cut them to about the length of your shoe and make several rows that are offset of each other in their length. Arrangement like a pyramid or whatever you want then glue them together. Put a bench in casing them together on top.
David "Imelda Marcos" Picciuto, ladies and gentlemen! Here we have a fine bench-making video with a totally rad save at the end with the veneered plywood top and BONUS George Carlin cameo! Dude, I'm loving the latest videos - I feel like you're getting your making mojo back in full swing. I always look forward to you videos as one of my favorite makers. I like the creative approach to take to a lot of this and the sense of humor is just the icing on the woody cake.
FYI: I had a similar problem finding the right drill bit for a pipe I wanted to fit. What I did was turn a piece of pipe into an improvised hole saw. and with a drill I widened the hole enough to fit the full pipe. 🙂
Great video. I love that you keep in the trouble shooting process. I relate to your videos and that’s why I keep watching. Honestly if you pivoted and got into another topic that isn’t wood working I’d still watch. You’re a great teacher.
9:48 -- oh good, so it's not just me! the more complicated the project, the more i question my life/hobby choices, hate myself, curse the day i was born, etc., etc. and most of the time it comes out okay. thanks for the on-going inspiration! you rock
That sinking feeling right near the end of a project that something major didn't work out. In a sick way makers secretly want this to happen so that they can figure a way out to make the project even better. Nice save my man!
Helllllll yeaaaaa this was fannnnntastic! This one felt really upbeat, like I could feel your genuine excitement about the outcome. Either way you rock Dave! Thanks for sharing this part of you with the world!!
Love how the seat top ended up tying it all together! I used conduit to design a rack to hold all my disc golf discs and ended up 3D printing some snap fit connectors to hold the conduit
I was really hoping to see a WU-------------------------------TANG logo in the top or something! Even though it's not what you planned originally I love how the finish design looks. Everything's an experiment!
Loving this!! Hearing you on the podcast saying you need a nice and quick project which you can easy plan from start to finish and it turns out there is always a curve ball!! I really love the end result.
Wow! That pivot to homemade veneering with a herringbone pattern set this project to a whole new level. What could have been a really upsetting ending transformed into one of the most beautiful pieces you've ever made. Well done, sir!
David f*#king Picciuto does it again!!! I'm so glad you made the top with the veneer and plywood. That came out way better than if you just did the hickory top. Thank you for sharing. I plan to make one too soon.
I’ve been with you for a very very long time. While I’m not the biggest fan of your aesthetic, I just love your attitude and the good vibe you are putting out into the world. IMO, this here (probably my first ever comment on your videos) is peak Make Something. Taking a fail and turning it into a bigger win than was originally visioned. I also really love the herringbone. Inspirational stuff, thank you.
Great video. Strange how "failures" often times leads to something better. The "mistake" makes the piece more interesting. The bench turned out so awesome. Mahao for sharing! : )
turned out cool in the end I think I would have added breadboards to the hickory piece, using the offcuts, but there are always many ways to achieve similar goals. well done!
This turned out sweet. Nice place to put those super fine kicks. Love that you included the sap wood in the design of the reimagined top. Really nice contrast to the heartwood and it looks beautiful. Wu-Tang is for the children. It may not be walnut, but we can still #respectthehickory. Thanks for sharing!
I love this video having just made a shoe rack for my daughter using big box store stair treads. I wish you had shown more about your resawing skills. In some cases it looked like you were using a fence, other times it looked like you were free handing it. I'd definitely watch a video on resawing tips. 😉
Just a suggestion. I would have angled the shoe tiers at about a 15-20 angle. With a back stop on the back side. The shoes would then be easier to store and take out.
In some ways, I'm glad that even professionals go through that "I'm bummed!... I'm happy!... I'm bummed again!" etc., because I go through that on almost every project. But in other ways, I think, "So it's always going to be this way with the bummer parts? CRAP."
@Make Something great piece. Love the beauty and the functionality! I’d like to make something similar. As a reference what are the dimensions of you bench?
Hahaha 🤣 you’d have fun with my shoe collection 200 plus boots shoes sandals and 6 pairs of wellington ! Okay I’m nuts but hey my feet stopped growing unlike my body so why not. Great project I love the idea and I love wood working diy. Just finished a shed and house lean to. Thanks for sharing.
Dave, this is a beautiful bench! I kinda have the feeling that it's too pretty to be a 'shoe bench'. Hey, it's good to see(hear) Dangerous Dan behind the camera again. I haven't noticed him in your latest videos. Thanks for sharing this video with us.
"Two levels of shoe holding technology" Love it!!!😂
I was getting ready to come here to make that comment, 😂

George Carlin's "Stuff" routine is one of my all-time favorites!
Watching you design a workaround from your original design is so instead inspirational.

“A couple millimeters over an 1/2” thick…” 🤣thanks England!
Thank you. Loved this vid and the Carlin clip. Love your positivity, even when things don't go right. Your videos always brighten my day.
Greate Idea on handling the conduit problem. Definitely something I'll have to keep in mind.
Mistakes are just a new opportunity. Love the way the new design turned out. Better than the original!
Very nice save on the top, I thought about plywood and veneer, but never would I have thought about the pattern ! Super great !
That top design is simply AMAZING!
I enjoyed watching you change tack midway. Always something exciting coming out of that .
Can beat the extra storage compartment, well done!
Might be my favorite video you’ve ever done.
Awesome! I really love how you've embraced veneering. Really enjoy your humour and videos.
The pattern on the top was such a nice top! Really liked how that turned out
That veneer is the BUSINESS. Crushing it, dude!
David really like how it turned out. Hopefully you get great use out of it for many years to come my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep Making. God bless.

That top / seat is excellent. Really, really cool. Kudos.
Started out as a shoe bench and ended up as a design piece! Absolutely in love with the homemade veneer!!! Awesome job!!
Thank you!
Very cool, creative solution to your material constraints, right on
Nice Pivot!!!!

@@jeremyspecce I stuck a dowel in it, and ran a bolt through the dowel.
Another banger Dave. Great project but always love seeing you have fun in the shop and adjust on the fly. Rule #4 always.
I'll be re-watching this video over a few times to get all the nuances of the various parts & pieces down prior to giving it a go!
The solution to your problem turned out great. Better than the original plan IMO!

Truly one of the nicest looking shoe storage/bench combos I've ever seen! And way to prove my mom wrong by totally succeeding by failing to plan!
Liking the little lift up storage area for ‘more stuff’ I’m all in on that idea!
Love the Carlin clip, totally was not expecting it, but love that your references come out of no where, but totally match my interests, lol
always nice to see some love for the hickory
That top was perfect. I like it better than the original idea.
That beautiful top is such a bonus!
That sinking feeling right near the end of a project that something major didn't work out. In a sick way makers secretly want this to happen so that they can figure a way out to make the project even better. Nice save my man!
The top looks amazing! Nice work.
Turned out even cooler
dripping glue on your new shoe too funny! I love how your creative mind thinks

This looks really good, great herringbone pattern, well done.
That looks amazing, really liked how you overcame the problem with the top. Great job!
I can relate with the shoe problem. I have three pairs of Crocs and two pairs of Extra-Tuffs. Storage is always an issue 🙂
I was really hoping to see a WU-------------------------------TANG logo in the top or something! Even though it's not what you planned originally I love how the finish design looks. Everything's an experiment!
I have a nearly identical design. In other words, I dig it!
So many great ideas coming to mind based on your use of electrical conduit.
Love the project and, as always, your sense of humor. The hickory is gorgeous

I love the wood and metal combo and the top is just fire!
It would be good if you could let us know what tools could be substitutes for those of us who have a more modest collection of tools. Love this bench.
looks just like my every single project: less making, more fixing. Very well done, sir!
Necessity is the mother of invention no truer saying but they should add style ,looks good.
Hell yeah! Looks fantastic
That’s a fun use of conduit!
Finally a project with no walnut
No tools were harmed in the making of this project. 😂
Outstanding build!
Funniest video in awhile, D. LOVE IT! Shout out to all my fellow slots out here, slittin' it up!
Love the veneered top! Best pivot idea I've seen in a while! Nice glue drip technique too! ;)
Your videos NEVER disappoint. You will remain my favourite “maker” good job with the top. Looks awesome matey.
Great video. Strange how "failures" often times leads to something better. The "mistake" makes the piece more interesting. The bench turned out so awesome. Mahao for sharing! : )
Beautiful work, Dave! 😃
The way you made the top is brilliant!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
turned out cool in the end
I think I would have added breadboards to the hickory piece, using the offcuts, but there are always many ways to achieve similar goals. well done!
Ooooh, that herringbone pattern!
Been waiting all week for a video
Is this a real thing
Amazing work!
Love that 67 impala!!
I’d be happy about making a mistake on this build it worked in your favour. It looks killer.
Brother, you’re vid style is looking so good! I’ve been watching since drunken woodworker and hadn’t caught one in a while. You guys are killing it!
"just a couple millimeters over an inch thick" had me wonder how many people's heads exploded at the mixed units, lol
Haha! That was totally on purpose. Was wondering if anyone would notice
I totally admired that too. Switching so casually between the two systems of measurement - awesome. I might say something similar.
This turned out sweet. Nice place to put those super fine kicks. Love that you included the sap wood in the design of the reimagined top. Really nice contrast to the heartwood and it looks beautiful. Sweet video David! Love the piece and editing! Y’all get a new wide angle? The shop is so much more prominent in this one.
You could have made hickory veneer's for each end to make up the small shortfall and saved a heap of trouble, but it's still a great piece of work.
Sap wood grout-line love it!
Gotta have a place to put your stuff!
I would have simply added some bookends to the top in a contrasting wood. Great project.
Thank you for the great video.
Hot dog! That top came out so nice! Sometimes mistakes are that little shake of cayenne you need to make a project really sizzle :). Great work

Your style is so definitely settling in! 😂😂😂
Building a flip top was a great idea. Now you have a place for a shoe horn. The kind with teeth.
I need to get a shoe horn. The kind with teeth.

Love the project. I am building a computer printer side desk for my niece. Like you said its an experiment.
Could have done a bread board end top. Would have saved a lot of time lol. Great project
I was losing it when it zoomed in on him dripping the glue 😂

❤ perfect idea & design
Great job 👍🏼
Beautiful. How long did it take for the shoes to end up on the bench top or all over the floor in front?
"Just a couple millimeters over an inch thick" dudes working in multiple measurement systems, that's next level
Love the George Carlin bit. I love how you attempt to lick glue off of your shoe that cracked me up.
