  • On a very hot day we arrive at Port Augusta to catch the Afghan Express as she readies her carriages for the run to Wool Shed Flat to meet up with the Pichi Richi Explorer, to combine for the run into Quorn. Due to the heat and the high fire danger Diesels engines were used for this Double Header train, Loco NT76, from Port Augusta, meeting NSU52, at Wool Shed Flat, making a rather unique double header this year, to say the least.

    Great video Trev!
Holy Christ almighty it was hot that day. By the time I got back to my carriage at Quorn Depot my head was killing me. 41’C in the shade and 60 plus in the sun. Crazy! The things we do for trains ay? Nice work and thanks for sharing with us. My video will be up soon. Cheers Caleb

Gidday, Bloody hot, I was going to give it away, but got some good stuff, found out eventually a bolt on my tripod was loose, looking forward to see what you did with the day.

I walked to that lookout above Hawker in the 1990s on a mid 40s day. With the benefit of hindsight it was a stupid thing to do. It was cloudy with this howling hot wind - I've never been so hot in my entire life and I've been through mid 40deg days since. I had plenty of water but still arrived at the lookout with a dull thud headache. My pure bred Blue Heeler (GRHS) accompanied me and thought it was great fun; strong those dogs. I'll never forget the sign on the way to the lookout that that read "children's playground and cemetery." The pool was closed because it was too hot. Was told on days like that they sometimes re open at 5:30pm.
We were camping and that night the howling hot wind never dropped. I must say I love the area in the heat of summer. Not many tourists either.

Good to see you back Trevor. Maybe you can also resurrect the intrepid explorer series with your Nissan Dowdy!
