The reason The Weirding Way was changed in Lynch's film is because a book-accurate Weirding Way was unfilm able at the time. The problems with Lynch's movie are first and foremost: budget and technology. He could certainly make a masterpiece with how far technology has advanced.

Obviously they targeted more to mainstream audience, as 84 version was not properly "recognize" in time when was released, only later one became cult movie.
something I've kinda wondered but never heard about: you hear that The Spice "extends life & expands consciousness" (much like 'dusty supplements' in the real world), but do they ever focus on 'how The Spice gets shipped to Ix (where The Navigators use it to fold space for the space-vessels ... or am I just imagining that space-travel part?)?' The Spice fumes give Fremen (& eventually others who live among them) blue-on-blue eyes---but why aren't those big Navigator slugs' eyes blue-on-blue?
@@therecanonlybeone7131 yeah a bunch of times, and the reason Lynch wanted his name off the movie was because of editing not a filming issue. There are things the studio couldnt cut out like the kids Paul had to take care of after he killed their dad. So like I said if you know what your looking at there is alot to see in the '84 Dune, educate yourself my friend.
Many "purists"dismiss this movie outright. I saw this in my teens and comparing the new one to this, Lynch's version managed to get you uneasy with the different characters/races and bring about tense situations. The current version, although as they say more faithful to the book is just pretty, I won't call it spectacular. Set design is too close to the recent Blade Runner look and what's up with that Daft Punk headgear 🙄 And nothing can beat Lynch's Fremen suits, they were iconic.
They have a reason to not like it. You can't squeeze a big book into a 2 hour movie. He should have done something like release this as "Dune Chapter 1" and then followed up with a second movie. Fortunately, we got a very short TV series called "Dune: Messiah" which is basically chapter 2. Then chapter 3 is "Children of Dune."
Currently reading Dune. About to finish the second “section” of the first book. If you’re interested just know it is regardless a VERY good read. You will be confused for parts but that will not be long lasting. The writing itself may feel archaic but that is just because it is from an older time. Either way I believe any sci-fi fan should at least attempt to read this series. The following books I hear are not as good but I already own the next 2 so we will see.
This version was very well done and has a Director's Cut version as well. I like the dystopian out look that even with incredible advances humans still fight for power and resources as we currently experience. Not every movie need to have sequels or become a franchise.
@2:45, I personally REALLY like Lynch's version. I've since seen a Fan Edit of Lynch's version which just made it SO much better :) If you want to see it, search for Dune Alternate Versions, it was uploaded by The Devil's Own. I have no affiliation with him and I don't wish to cause any problems, if Marvelous Videos bans me for this, I'll understand.
3:45 The spice does not help anyone “fold space.” The spice gives them prescience or foresight to plot course through space to avoid obstacles . the holtzman engine folds space,
Saw it at the Drive-in back in the day and it is always an inspirational adaption of the book in my opinion. Some critics dismiss it for the 80's feel to it - but it is brilliant in my opinion. The 3hr version is the best version ... i don't have high hopes for the remake - they always ruin the story, alter characters and try to appeal to the pc crowd ...
Villeneuve did a genderswap of Liet-Kynes (the character played by Max von Sydow in the Lynch movie) for no other reason than he "liked the actress" and for some reason didn't think that having Jessica, Mohiam, Shadout Mapes, Princess Irulan, Chani, Margot Fenring, and Alia were enough female characters.
It took them 10 years to make this movie happen. Production began for the film in 1973 with Alejandro Jodorowsky directing the project. Mick Jagger Orson Welles Salvatore Dali, Gloria Swanson, David Carradine, Udo Kier, and Amanda Lead were considered for roles in the movie. The budget was $30 million dollars, which was a lot of money. Producer Arthur Jacobs passed away in 1974 before filming had begun, and the project was cancelled. Ridley Scott was approached to helm the project, but turned it down to work on ALIEN and Blade Runner instead. David Lynch was picked for the job, and the rest is history.
@@Shan_Dalamani ... And iirc, Dune used to be Earth-like, before it became a desert planet, because the sandworms/trout came from another planet, brought to Dune/Arrakis, which in turn these worms re-terraformed Dune to desert. So making it rain would bring Arrakis back to its former environmental state. I would have to look at the 30 thousand-year Dune timeline again to refresh my memory.

Ever since I saw this movie when it came out it's been one of my favorites. I was excited to hear about the new one and I didn't think it was that good it just doesn't grab you like Lynch's version . Lynch's version just says that gritty Gothic darkness.
Muadib was his formal siege name,. He chose it himself, after the nocturnal desert mouse- like creature that usually only came out on nights when the second moon was visible. His informal siege name was Usul (akin to a nickname) Calling him THE Maudib is akin to calling him THE Atreides. THE Kwisatz Haderach was not so much a title but a descriptor for one that would show the way of the Golden Path, (the best possible future for humanity) A Bene Geserit pseudo title. THE Duke of House Atreides... would be his only _actual_ title after his father was killed, (If there were anyone left alive to address him as such) THE _Mahdi_ (savior) is the Fremen pseudo-title you were looking for.
Please Lord don't let them mess about with too much CGI in the new film. The details in the book will probably call for some but I just love love love the 1st film.
@@Captain.AmericaV1 ... They are actually human, but because of melange, they start changing into that giant bogey-looking thing you described. The one in the movie is Lynch's interpretation. In the novels, they are supposed to look more like a fish-man iirc.
@@robwebnoid5763 One thing to note: they are treated as "gods" and get free protection and transport for life because their ability to "see" into everything is what makes them so valuable to the people they rule over. Another interesting thing: when they visit Shaddam IV, there is one man with a microphone. He is next in line if the current navigator suddenly dies. He has been consuming huge amounts of spice and it's already affecting his voice, which is why he uses the huge microphone.
I don’t care what others think, it is a special film to me and I do like the soundtrack too. I get worried when we try re creating great movies, but it is in good hands.
I too enjoyed this movie, especially when it has Patrick Stewart in it. The music makes me think of the Flash Gordon movie, which was also good. The villains really had that evil appearance look, especially Feyd-Rautha. The sound weapons were actually cool, I don't know why they were not in the books. When the new movie comes out, I doubt it will be as exciting as the good and might be a little more complex and hard to understand. Even if the new movie turns out good, I may still like the 1984 movie more.
OMG: What version is the hardcover of dune to the right of the 2 other books. I got that one fromt he sci fi book club ages ago and cant even find a cover image online.
I definitely think that Lynch's film failed in telling the first books story. That movie is one of my guilty pleasures though. When I reread Frank Herbert's books I see the costumes from David Lynch's film. For example I love the look of Lynch's stillsuit's, Bene Gesserit's, Guild Navigator's and the worm.
@15:32 I would think Cerberus the three headed dog that guards hell would also be an influence on the sand worms as they have the three jawed mouths and hell is known as the underworld. There's also a lot of Biblical themes in Dune so "where the worm never dies" in regards to Gehenna, the lake of fire comes to mind.
I disagree about the weirding modules and the 3rd stage navigators. First the lesser objection; the navigators. I get that their appearance in David Lynch's film isn't all that pleasing...but they weren't supposed to be. The point was to show how far 4,000 years of forced spice rapid evolution had moved them from traditional humanity. In the novel and other screen versions, they seem *too* humanoid. I for one am glad Lynch took a more bold approach, even if it wouldn't win any beauty contests. It shows how humanity had become at least a little less superficial. Now for the major objection; the weirding modules. Not only do I agree that the battles weren't really a good idea to have with martial arts just due to the look and how difficult it'd be to fight ankle-deep in sand, but much more importantly, because it would fail to make sufficient sense of how the Fremen could finally free themselves of Harkonnen and Corrino oppression; especially from the Harkonnens. But the weirding modules *do* answer this dilemma, honestly, in my opinion, better than even the great one himself, Frank Herbert, did in his novel! I will explain. No other production of DUNE has the weirding modules, and some would say they were an FX gimmick, but they're wrong. They were very much needed to resolve an otherwise sticky point about the Fremen. How is it that the best hand-to-hand fighters in the universe -- better than even the Sardaukar and *far* better than the Harkonnens -- were held down and oppressed for so long by House Harkonnen, until their messiah came along? If the excuse is supposed to be it's because they were scattered and ununited, I ask why was *that* the case? We can quibble about how those of the North and South didn't trust each other fully, or similarly juxtapose the city-swelling Fremen with their desert-dwelling counterparts. But that just doesn't hold up, because the sheer brutality of the Harkonnens would've long-ago caused the Fremen tribes to unite, -- probably under Stilgar -- despite these far-lesser issues / differences, and throw off their shared oppressors. So why didn't it happen until the coming of Paul Maud'dib? The answer, it seems clear enough, has to be technology. Until the messiah came to them, the Fremen's best weapons were knives made from worm teeth that can sometimes break, -- hence the Fremen curse, "May thy knife chip and shatter" -- and their emblem of adulthood, the maula pistol...a spring-actuated dart gun! Meanwhile, House Harkonnen had air power to drop bombs, body shields (which were only a problem in the open desert sands where they might not work and would drive the worms into frenzy if they did work, but which would work just fine in cities), lasguns, and other forms of high technology. Think about why the Emperor was afraid, not only of Duke Leto's rising popularity, but also of the new secret army House Atreides was building. It represented a genuine military threat, because the technology was new, potent, and even worse, not well understood by anyone outside the House. And it turned out the Emperor's fears were correct! The weirding modules allowed domination on the battlefield, even over the Sardaukar, despite the technological advantage they'd heretofore enjoyed over the Fremen. I say, then, this is *no* FX gimmick! You *have* to have the superior technological advantage this films' version of the weirding way represented. Otherwise, even with Paul's prescient vision, his revolution may well have failed. Other than that, I agree with everything else in this video. Thank You, and Good Job! 👍
You should dive into Murder By Death. Such a classic cult movie that is overlooked so much that there are very few, and all baddly done, reviews of it. The Allan Smithee version of DUNE is the only version worth watching. It's been my favorite movie of aaaaalllllll time, since I was 8! Murder by Death was one of those movies I watched over and over again as a kid, that no other kid would watch.
The "weirding modules" are certainly not the biggest or most "criminal" deviation from the book. They're just a bit superfluous. The biggest deviation is turning Paul from a gifted guy making use of BG propaganda and worrying about djihad into an actual Messiah-like figure fulfilling genuine prophecy.
Love this movie. Lynch is genius. Sadly we will never see his full vision. I don’t really care that it is not true to the book. As a film it looks stunning to this day (except few things) actors are amazing and it is not just a soap opera b movie. It is a really underrated
I love the book but I'm never sure how to feel about this movie. I love the sci fi adaptation in the year 2000. Great stuff there for sure. I still have to see the sequel. The 2003 TV series about the son of Paul, Leto II. Thanks again. Love your channel.

I can't wait for the new Dune to come out it looks so good and has a huge A list cast it's gonna be a banger, could get best movie of the year if done right.
I don't believe that it's possible for any director to adequately surmise this outstanding story within a 2 hour norm allotted film. Although looking forward to seeing the next iteration, I am not enthusiastic about it being a decent rendition of the books either. Also I can't help but to mirror the state of the world of today's political arena with the Baron's "plan".

Obviously they targeted more to mainstream audience, as 84 version was not properly "recognize" in time when was released, only later one became cult movie.
something I've kinda wondered but never heard about: you hear that The Spice "extends life & expands consciousness" (much like 'dusty supplements' in the real world), but do they ever focus on 'how The Spice gets shipped to Ix (where The Navigators use it to fold space for the space-vessels ... or am I just imagining that space-travel part?)?'
The Spice fumes give Fremen (& eventually others who live among them) blue-on-blue eyes---but why aren't those big Navigator slugs' eyes blue-on-blue?
I still love this movie! Great 80's cult sci-fi movie!
Searched for a deep dive into the Dune movie before seeing the new one and wow does your channel have a lot of good stuff.
Dune is a super complex series.
Yes but the 1984 film was not
@@therecanonlybeone7131 it's there if you care to look for it. Jamis' kids being pretty much Paul's first Fedaykin was cool to see.
@@jacobthompson1682
Have you even read the books. Even David Lynch, who directed it wants nothing to do with the film

My Catcher in the Rye as a teen, Ya Hya Chouda, Long live the fighters
Many "purists"dismiss this movie outright.
I saw this in my teens and comparing the new one to this, Lynch's version managed to get you uneasy with the different characters/races and bring about tense situations.
The current version, although as they say more faithful to the book is just pretty, I won't call it spectacular. Set design is too close to the recent Blade Runner look and what's up with that Daft Punk headgear 🙄
And nothing can beat Lynch's Fremen suits, they were iconic.
I agree. Also, Oscar Isaac's acting is not even close to Jurgen Prochnow's performance, as Duke Leto.
*The 1984 Dune is my favorite Scifi movie, I mean I grew up on these 80's movies and to me this one did not disappoint. And the remake is* 🔥
and I thought "Shai Hulud" was what they called worm-sign (that lightning that pops up when there's at least one worm on the way)
Currently reading Dune.
All of the books are amazing, especially the last one. But the first three tell the best cohesive story imo
God Emperor of Dune FOREVER changed my way of looking at things

This version was very well done and has a Director's Cut version as well. I like the dystopian out look that even with incredible advances humans still fight for power and resources as we currently experience. Not every movie need to have sequels or become a franchise.
Yeah . . . there is that.
The version with all the deleted scenes is a masterpiece
watched this before reading the novel had no idea there was one till years later. if no knowledge of source material it is a decent movie.
@2:45, I personally REALLY like Lynch's version.
I've since seen a Fan Edit of Lynch's version which just made it SO much better :)
If you want to see it, search for Dune Alternate Versions, it was uploaded by The Devil's Own.
I have no affiliation with him and I don't wish to cause any problems, if Marvelous Videos bans me for this, I'll understand.
I've read the first few books.
And the movie is a classic.
That's all I got to say.
Just wanted to state my appreciation.🤘
For years and maligned by so many, very unfairly. I like the 3 hr cuts the best.
The flaw of the messianic rainmaking on Arrakis is it effectively killed the sandworms and the Spice along with it.
The films didnt establish that at all
@@hildriet056 It's crystal-clear if you pay attention to the book that rain will kill the sandworms, because water is poisonous to them.
This is DEFINITELY one of my all time favorite movies. Ever.
Have you read the books?
@@therecanonlybeone7131 only the 1st years ago I'm going to order it and read it again. I was quite young so I know it will be a whole new experience!

The movie is awesome serious sci fi movie. I don’t give poop about the fact it is not 1:1 to the book

The audiences did not like it because it bombed in the theaters and it was considered the worst movie in 1984.
Many of the reasons mentioned are why I like the 2000 trilogy versus the 84 movie. They don't exactly shy away from some of the typical issues.
I love this movie I can't wait for the new one
DUNE is the greatest sci-fi epic available, nothing is close, not star wars, not Star trek. The only thing on its level is 2001:A Space Odyssey.

His informal siege name was Usul (akin to a nickname)
Calling him THE Maudib is akin to calling him THE Atreides.
THE Kwisatz Haderach was not so much a title but a descriptor for one that would show the way of the Golden Path, (the best possible future for humanity)
A Bene Geserit pseudo title.
THE Duke of House Atreides... would be his only _actual_ title after his father was killed,
(If there were anyone left alive to address him as such)
THE _Mahdi_ (savior) is the Fremen pseudo-title you were looking for.
Duke Lego's name is pronounced lee-toe, not let-oh, I thought! 🤔
And Baron Harkonnen's name is pronounced hark-oh-nun, not harka-nin, isn't it? 🤔
I think this movie was fantastic!!
Awesome job!
The 2021 Film take its time ... and does so little with it.

Hey can you guys also try making videos about the Spectre
The spice must flow.....

I really enjoy Dune 1984
Please Lord don't let them mess about with too much CGI in the new film. The details in the book will probably call for some but I just love love love the 1st film.
Just looking at some of the trailers , it looks bad, really nothing against the actors playing in it either, just looks like a cash grab.......
What is that giant floating bogey looking thing in the spacing guilds liquid container?
That's a Guild Navigator.
@@Shan_Dalamani ah, thank you.
It looks creepy as hell
The theme is so great, an epic score by Toto, I was hoping it gets reused in the new movie, bit perhaps in a live-action adaptation of the rts games.
Love your channel but never @ Lynch like that...ever.
Kidding great vid
Har-ko-nen is how it's pronounced

It’s called an adaptation. DUNE 84’ is an adaptation, so is 2021 version.
That dune was awesome at that time, but the shadow of star wars was really strong
Lynch did great for the technology he had ... and he kept his movie close to the books thou condensed to much he did a great job a true classic syfy
The best version of this movie is a fanedit which is available on RUclips for free.
Love this movie. Lynch is genius. Sadly we will never see his full vision. I don’t really care that it is not true to the book. As a film it looks stunning to this day (except few things) actors are amazing and it is not just a soap opera b movie. It is a really underrated
YEAh, Lynch deserves final cut.
My one hope is that use of the Bene Gesserit Voice doesn't make a character sound like he/she is demon possessed.
So I have a part in the movie huh? Playing a truck!?!? And my co-star, a famoust movie star!!! WOW! lol
I love the book but I'm never sure how to feel about this movie. I love the sci fi adaptation in the year 2000. Great stuff there for sure. I still have to see the sequel. The 2003 TV series about the son of Paul, Leto II. Thanks again. Love your channel.
This is just a summary, very little explanation
I bet this is the movie that Lynch did that convinced Lynch to have Kyle as his friend and good luck charm.
This was Kyle MacLachlan's first movie. Up to that point he had been a stage actor.
Fun fact: David Lynch has a walk-on in this movie. He's one of the spice miners.
No one notices that this is about astral projection and lsd/acid/peyote, etc. (melange), help with that…. The cia had projects on astral projection (without help of psychedelics)… the newer version Looks to be about “colonization” if ya get my meaning… like whaaaaaa
dont think i ever have or ever will see dune referred to as underrated, people rave about that shit
The Original movie is pretty bad because the studio forced Lynch to cut so much & change the placement of scenes but the version free on RUclips is far better & closer to Lynch's original vision & to the books.
The ridiculous snobbery over the 1984 David Lynch film is overdone. It's a marvellous film. Cast and visuals and effects are top notch. I can watch it over and over. David Lynchs vision is exceptional and beautifully done.
I've also seen the new Villneuve version and it's brilliantly done.
So I now have 2 great films to enjoy and Villneuves 2nd film to come. Life is grand.
I honestly liked the 1984 Dune movie even as a kid. I liked everything about it. But TBH that's partly because I never read the book. I sincerely hope that the new Dune movie is a bigger immediate success than it's predecessor.
I doubt the new movie will be visually as nice as this one was, this one captured the inbred moldy monarchy feeling nicely. Look & feel on this one was spot on. The new one looks kinda basic.
I like the 'Dune' story as the original inhabits taking on on alien industrial empire. If only we First Nation Tribes had tamed dragons and giants, eh?
Ive read the book but I like the movie, it was a good try on a tough book
I can't wait for the new Dune to come out it looks so good and has a huge A list cast it's gonna be a banger, could get best movie of the year if done right.

I don't believe that it's possible for any director to adequately surmise this outstanding story within a 2 hour norm allotted film. Although looking forward to seeing the next iteration, I am not enthusiastic about it being a decent rendition of the books either. Also I can't help but to mirror the state of the world of today's political arena with the Baron's "plan".
84 Dune isn't terrible at all, but it *is* a mess.
I acknowledge Dune 1984 is deeply flawed. I still love and keep rewatching it.
