Here's a tip that's really helped me manage my GAS: reconnect with your old gear! Sometimes, I dive back into the manuals and watch reviews of my older equipment. It reignites my excitement and makes me want to use it again, keeping my mind off buying new stuff. Just a thought-hope it helps!

I have found it rewarding to give my unneeded gear to my local school music program rather than sell it.
I have a variation of G.A.S. I don't buy hardware anymore, but I buy way too many plugins and virtual instruments.

My latest GAS journey has been modding the electronics on guitars. Not just pickups, but completely rewiring them with all new components and wire. Im still giving into GAS, but on the other hand I'm developing the new skill set of soldering and understanding instrument circuits. It's a double edged sword. Im still spending money and spending too much time on gear, but I'm learning, and I'm transforming instruments I'm not too fond of and turning them into something i cant put down. It's definitely a good skill to have, but i need to spend more time writing and recording music instead of noodling for hours.

Great advice on avoiding debt. One thing I would add is that certain gear can save you a lot of time. While it's possible to get good results with cheaper equipment, you might spend more time adjusting and troubleshooting. This is why some professionals prefer specific preamps, channel strips, or cables. For instance, Amazon offers a line of cables called 'Cable Matters' that are very good. They may not match the high-end cables entirely, but they share many of their characteristics.
Great video Mike! I always recommend beginners not to buy the most expensive gear. The reason is you can give an inexperienced person two pieces of gear and they will likely come up with the same results because they haven't learned how the gear works and how to achieve the sound they want. After that don't upgrade until you can hear the limitations of the gear you have. That way you know why you want the new piece of gear and how to achieve the sound you want.
On another note, the song is king. That's why Van Halen had a cover on all the early records. Roth said, a hit is still a hit. Look at all the people doing covers on the Internet today. Keep the great videos coming!! I love the channel and community.

We need to remember the great music of the past did not have the quality of equipment that we have. All they had were 4 track tape most of the time and some small mixing boards.
I determined years ago that if I can't make music with my current setup then buying more stuff wouldn't change it.

Con 3 is the reason why there are very few original analogue designs now; everything is a clone of a classic Neve, SSL, API, or Telefunken design. I think the Distressor was probably the last great original analogue compressor, and that's a real shame.
I like obscure gear. I don't WANT to sound like everyone else.
Compressor is a specific function, and in analog hardware there are limitations to how you can switch it up. In software there are compressor s that work differently. If you want saturation in the signal and use a compressor for adding saturation, I would suggest to focus on saturation hardware. If what you are looking for is hardware that treat signal in a different way, there are some, but most stick to the tried and tested methods, because those are the best way to adress the issues as far as analog hardware design offers. If you cant come up with how you would like to process the signal for a non traditional processing, you cant expect others to have figured it out for you. What is is that you would like to do, that you can't in analog hardware?

Hi Mike, wise words as always, thank you. I have, over 50 years of playing guitar, spent thousands because of GAS. It has never really helped except for one or two items that I believe made a real difference. I have learnt, that gear, most of the time, is less important than working on my skills. I have now find the perfect solution to GAS. Lack of money ! Lol.

Thankfully i can't afford g.a.s., so i must squeeze my brains, tutorials and free DAW and plugins... I just bought an M-Audio m-track solo to properly record guitars (I've been using the onboard jack input the whole time) and have a decent monitoring on headphones. Thanks to you Mike, and other mentors here in the community i've been able to learn and grow. Success to me is learning and putting something out from time to time. Cheers!

I can't speak to bought cables as I make my own, but I can say that even the quality of the raw cable itself does make a huge difference. One of the worst problems with cheap cables is microphonics. That is, when the cable is tapped or knocked, it generates an electrical pulse. Drape a cable like this over something that is vibrating at 50Hz (or 60Hz) due to a transformer or motor, and it will produce hum that cannot be fixed by screening. It can take a lot of time and effort to find out that this is the problem!
Mike Love what you do Always. Cable Management is nothing to be Hasty about. All laughed at me asking them about Quality of Mic cables Specifically and Audiophiles Make a Great Stink about this. I took their advice as you have they were Right. Thank you Carry On.
Mike Good info. I try to buy stuff that helps me work better. ATM im looking at the new Icon controller because of the big LCD screen so i can see the channel names as im about blind. Been losing time thinking about this. Back in the day we did not have credit like you see today. Music shops would give you a small line of credit to keep you going!! if you paid your bill. Thanks to all the small stores for keeping us going. Blown Speakers! stuff like that. Also most folks don't know they can still call big music shops and ask for better deals then they see on line. Everything i have bought in the past 10 years i have just not added to cart and checked out. Thanks so much! Your videos inspire me to jump in and start making music again. My GAS problem involves virtual instrument and plugins software. This is fed by FOMO the fear of missing out. If I don’t buy the gear at the low, low intro or sale price now, I won’t have it at the ready when musical inspiration strikes that requires (or at least could benefit from) said gear to implement. Of course, it takes massive amounts of time to install, learn, backup and otherwise manage this software. I thought it would slow down, but there is always more cool stuff coming out. I haven’t made much music in the last few years.

Mike, I've developed a touch of buying plugins that go on sale that I probably really do not need.
Totally justifiable, don't worry. 😉 Sometimes there's a very special problem, that needs special solving. 🤷♂️ I too bought some pretty expensive cables, because they needed to be *extremly* flexible to fit behind an existing installation. Using others simply would have been the wrong choice here.

I bought a Tiger Woods driver once so I could hit it like him. I did hit it further into the woods. Effective recording and practice strategies are still the key skillsets to develop IMO. Nothing fixes bad performances as quickly as practice.
The distraction is real. I know so many people that can talk studio gear and have so much nice studio set ups and zero business, zero knowledge on how to apply it beyond basic information.
Well just ignore them...lots of people talk sports too
DIY seems to alleviate the pain and dis-ease of price and provides further opportunity for creativity. Preamps, effect units, microphones...

I like to kid myself and say I'm above all of this marketing pressure and hype, but what did I ask for my birthday? Money to buy a UA channel strip and Capital Chambers. Do I need it? Probably not. But it is inspiring to hear the results.
I think the best advice is to try and struggle with what you've got and then when you come to the point of "Ugh, this would be so much easier with [insert name of gear that would solve it all]. Note it down and why it would help in a notebook and continue to struggle. Wait a day and go back and read your reasoning. If it still seems reasonable, start putting cash aside.
I did this with a guitar and when I finally saved after 7 months, getting the thing was so satisfying and I love the guitar all the more.

I'm with you on everything you said Mike.....almost. I am referring to your $100 dollar mike cables. I think I would have kept the money in my pocket and just be more careful where I placed the cables! LOL I'm no better. I don't even want to think about how much money I've wasted on junk I didn't really need.
I love gear but I can’t afford a lot of. So I’ve made sure what I have is solid and reliable for what I do and doesn’t slow me down.
Years ago I was assisting for a producer/engineer. The band had booked time at a studio that said it had an Amek board. We were expecting a Mozart or at least an Angela. Nope, it was a TAC. Made by Amek but not an Amek. After grumbling a bit we just got down to work.
It taught me about getting the best out of what you have.
I only buy new stuff when I have reached the limits of what I can creativley do...and the new equipment opens the door to my next level. Example: I am only NOW looking for a DAW Controller because m at a point where using a mouse slows me down...i never buy anything new until I can FEEL the need for its usefullness...
Another Example: buying a Native Instruments A49 3 years ago opened the doors for me because I was never a great keyboard player and this device helped me with my "handicap" of playing chord progressions

Hi Mike, I had an addiction to purchasing plugins, but I am slow weening myself off. I came to the realisation that I was only using a few favorites to get the results I wanted. Now I rarely purchase new plugins and just keep what I have updated. I think another area you have to be careful with is subscriptions. You can easily get trapped with too many of those.
... And What kind of microphone was that ? Because I'm sure I Need That !!
I've had a decent enough microphone (Marantz) sitting on a stand since I bought it 4 months ago. I don't sing, so it doesn't get much use, other than the occasional toot on my saxophones. So, yesterday, I decided to splash out on another instrument to use with it - while simultaneously indulging my GAS. I spent €15 on a vibraslap! It's perfect for a 'snake' noise in my currently-being-written TV cue track, for a music library. Not all GAS has to be expensive.
I thought you were going to tell us that those cables were Kryptonite-free! Sorry Mike, I promise no more 'jokes' on the Superman theme 😁 I've been strangely (and uncharacteristically) restrained on the gear-buying front over the last couple of years - either I've become more sensible, or just getting more forgetful...

I remember back in the 80s it cost over £200 for a roll of 2 inch tape. The cost's of recording were prohibitive. I'll take gear addiction over that any day.
And that was 15-minutes of record time at 30-ips, or 30-minutes at 15-ips.
The COST of playing this game has dropped exponentially.
Many of the RUclipsrs doing anti GAS videos are talking about the price of Plugins!
If they only knew how much Each one of my TT Patchcables cost they'd take up knitting instead.
For me, everything is goal oriented. How can I reach my goal with what I have? Sometimes I remind myself that the Beatles recorded the entirety of Sqt. Peppers on four track machines. Even if you have a 2 channel scarlett, a PC and Cakewalk, you already have more than they had. It's not about the gear.
I have two Mogami Gold mic cables, for exactly the same reason.
I have G.A.S. because I believe I need to have the necessary tools to do the job at hand, without being constrained by gear that doesn't work well. So, I don't think better gear makes me "better," it just doesn't make me worse.
My Mogami cable connects my K2 vocal mic to my rig; a Hosa cable connects the SM57 on my guitar amp to my rig.

People can collect gear as a collector. It's just a matter of recognizing you are collecting gear, you can do it but gas Is Just collector's bug. If you collect maps it'ok but It doesn't make you a traveller.

You've heard my playing - Eddie Van Halen I ain't! - but like you, I've found that a couple of my guitars really inspire me to play (and are, frankly, easier to play). Unfortunately, that doesn't explain the other dozen guitar hanging around my studio!

It's a serious malady for sure! I somehow ended up with over 200 microphones of all types shapes and sizes. But honestly I'm perfectly happy using just a few favorites like an SM7, or any decent tube or condenser for most things, knowing there are tools (many excellent free ones) that allow me to ultimately shape the results. One thing you mentioned about cheap low quality guitars in particular is interesting, I'd probably go a step further actually and say "poorly setup" guitars. I've been using what many consider to be "cheap", low quality guitars for most everything I do, the one difference is, they are all meticulously set up to play like an old familiar friend. So they're all inspirational to play and are amazing. And, many of the great songs of the past (I'm talking early blues guitarists) were done on some of the cheapest low quality instruments available, but yet the music transcended that somehow. A lot to be said about a good song to be sure. My favorite Bob Clearmountain quote... "If it's a great song, people won't care if it was made on a wire recorder". Thanks for another great video👍👍
I swore I wasn't going to get the new Sonar as long as Cakewalk by Bandlab was still available. Last night I signed up for the backstage pass and downloaded Sonar. As least I can cancel at any time.
I've built up VSTs and have a round 3000 sounds Maybe more, but I have the urge to buy more. To stop this, I have vowed to go through all the instrument sounds I have. I am keep discovering more and have resisted buying any more VSTs.
You're right. It starts with a good song. If it's not a good song on guitar and vocal or piano and vocal, then all the production in the world won't help. At least, that's how I look at it.
Neumann U87, Mogami Gold XLR into Mic Pre of choice (Neve-1073, API-312 classic choices, UAD Apollo Unison, SSL, Audient modern "interface" preamps)
With that combination, you no longer have to Think about the tools capturing the music. Just the music.
If the Music is SO GOOD that it warrents other than U87 & Mogami, you have an enviable problem on your hands.
A $3500 Mic with a $100 cable is dare I say 'Industry Standard'. What you get for that price is not only Quality gear, but peace of mind and confidence. And not only are You more confident in your gears professionalism, but anyone you bring in to record is also set at ease by seeing the same high end gear they've seen in countless other studios, magazines, and bts videos...for decades.
There are certainly GAS purchases that cant be justified, but these are time tested Investments that will outlast You and your Career.
(And as an aside, if you decide to get out of the business, these items retain a High Resale Value. You'll get much of your money Back when your done using it, and Vintage U 87s go for a Premium, you might even Make money after you make your music.)
Personally, I'm very much in the camp of "I can get by with a small number of core instrument and effect plugins". Unfortunately, I've had to buy a load of stuff to get to the point where I can come to that realisation!
For example, I picked up the Arturia V-Collection and while it's got some great stuff in there, between Diva, PG-8X (doesn't strictly compete with anything in the V-Collection, but it's still in constant use for me!) & TAL-Sampler, I rarely have a reason to use it. I did get it on sale for £300 or so, it was very useful for a while, but unlike physical gear it can be difficult to impossible to sell on plugin licences. Then again, I don't think I have enough desk space for a single 1 of the physical synths in that collection so I guess it's a price worth paying!
On the plus-side though, when it comes to guitars, I got the guitar that I really wanted on sale for something like £200-250, and honestly wouldn't change it for anything else at this point. Well, maybe if a fancy carbon TransTrem-equipped Steinberger fell on my lap, I wouldn't say no, but I'm not paying £5k for one!
Apologies for the rambling! Thankfully I'm very much over the GAS bump now, but it feels like some GAS is necessary to reach that point. That is to say, only when you spend a load on gear and still make crap, do you fully realise that the gear is not a substitute for putting in the hours and effort!

I'm convinced that:
1 There is something about a recording that makes it popular, and it's seldom the equipment used. Study early hits that charmed us most...likable but not that impressive in a number of ways.
2 We tend to subjectively deify details of a recording/artist that we like. Often an attractive recording was made with catchy creativity that super equipment alone could never have achieved.
3 Avoiding game-stopper bad mistakes is as important as anything else.
I think I have a mild case of GAS myself.

G.A.S. can be a serious problem. I was not unaffected by it in the past. I think that if one's reasonable in approaching gear choice it can be avoided.
Music instruments and audio gear have reached such high levels of quality at such reasonable prices that you can now equip yourself for minimal expense compared to the cost of the "best" gear. Of course what is a reasonable expense is subjective and relative to the money you have to spend.
A very good electric guitar or keyboard can be had for 8 hundred to 1000 dollars. It's not necessary to spend more than 3 or 4 hundred for an excellent 2 channel audio interface. Even at this price external pre-amps are not necessary. Very good microphones can be had for three to five hundred dollars. Serviceable monitors might set you back 5-6 hundred. Considering monitors and other audio reproduction equipment it should be remembered that the refinements of better gear can go completely unnoticed if your room is not properly designed and treated, so until it's possible to improve the listening environment buying very expensive equipment is a waste of money.
The basic point is that it's possible to equip yourself very well for a small expense compared to the cost of high-end "professional" gear. Of course the decision is not always reasonable, but may have a high emotional component. It's the difference between what you need and what you want.
What exactly is poor equipment and for that matter, what are minimum requirements? Who decides that?
No such thing. "poor equipment" is something you buy that breaks soon after you get it or doesnt function properly because of a poor company...besides bad cords or connectors, etc other than that there is NO poor equipment today
The same is true of electric Guitar. in a similAR WAY. How doe tone wood matter the the metal strings vibrate over an electromagnetic field. If pickup do a good job the that electrromagnetic field get transformed into an electronic signal and sent to an amplifier again though it is not the amp that makes the sound. It is the next one down the chain. The Speaker. That is with we hear.
I'm so full of GAS I have a Gastro appointment coming up - they say it's because I'm fifty but us musicians know better ........ LOL ;)
I'll never understand why people think that expensive plug-ins , gear and instruments will make them a better musician and/or mixer.
Because those people are the ones who fuel the iNDUSTRY and make things affordable for us REAL musicians who actually can use and appreciate those tools. There are TWO things going on....the people with money who like "toys" they will never be able to use financially prop up the industry for the FEW like us who Can use them

I have NEVER seen "poor equipment". Its always "user error". I grew up as a "hip hop kid" in the early 1980s...where we took the skills we had from playing REAL instruments and REAL musical training...and used turntables, creatively manipulated samples, and other equipment not designed for the use we were using them....
DJ Quik created his entire first album with a TASCAM 4 track by continually bouncing the tracks...today there are no 4 track tape machines being used...so there is no such thing as bad equipment today!! My first studio in 1999 had more power than a Phil Spectre orchestra...so imagine what I have today!!
the SPIRIT of creation will take any piece of musical equipment and express itself thru the capabilities of that equipment....in 1994 I remember taking a friends "toy drum machine" that wasnt suitable f r music...and realizing if I played with the tone dial i could make it sound like an 809 sub bass. No such thing as BAD EQUIPMENT today unless it just DOESNT WORK!!

There is an easy answer to your question and I don't think you have considered it. Both Quincy Jones and you are completely wrong. There are so many bad and shitty songs out there making money, that's your initial hypothesis is already wrong from the get-go. In fact quality music doesn't matter anymore. What matters is promotion, attitude, production value etc. this is commercialism in music, baby. Most people cannot tell the difference between good and bad songs. There are at least two generations that have grown up with so shitty music, that of course cannot tell the difference between good and bad songs. I know I'm a music teacher! The only thing that really matters is the production value and the promotion via videos, advertisement etc. etc. Quincy Jones was from another era, when late stage of cultural industry was not yet so advanced.
Well you are 100% correct..and THEY are 100% correct. The dilemma YOU are talking about is a generation who were "re-engineered to be dumb"....the problem his PEOPLE arent artificially programmable for long....I drive Lyft sometimes and we talk about music a majority of th eparent smy age (GNEX) sya that have kids tht absolutely love the music THEY grew up on....
the newer generation has broken the "stupidty" programming the millenials and the kids after them have been programmed with. "Music slavvery: doesnt last because by NATURE the human spirit resists slavery on all levels
