Thanks Mike for covering this topic. I have a Behringer X-Touch One and I love to use the fader, it's so much better than the mouse. Important tip if you have a single fader device: Check the "Select highlights track" option. This will make sure that your single fader always works on the track you want. You also want to have "Use Scrub+Bank ..." option checked for switching between tracks and busses.
Where is this option located? I'm thinking about going with a Behringer X-Touch One or the Presonus Faderport V2 (I don't have the money to buy any of the bigger machines) but have read a lot about issues with both devices not following the track selection in Cakewalk, which is still holding me back from pulling the trigger on either device. I really don't want to shell out any money only to be left with a controller that doesn't really let me control Cakewalk without any major hassles. Those boxes are meant to make things not only more hands-on but also faster, so a device that's severity limited in its abilities doesn't make any sense.
Here's a nice ol' comment to help your video out because I've been searching for hours to get my controller back working after it bugged out for some reason! Top job, thanks!
I was hoping that you would go through the Cakewalk Generic Midi and ACT functions. I have an Alesis VI49 with lots of knobs, buttons, and transport controls have no idea how to synch them up. There's a surprising little amount of info out there and it seems like a waste of the new keyboard's potential
Thanks Mike. I have had my Keystation 61 for about 8 months and could not get the transport buttons to work. It was the "Disable Handshake" that got it working. Cheers mate.
For my Novation Impulse 49, I had to activate the "HUI (Beta)" protocol in the Mackie Control - 1 dialog. All works now, transport controls and knobs and faders in DAW mode to control volume, pan, effect sends etc. 😊 Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, Sir.
Thanks Mike. Helped quickly get me sorted for my Arturia keylab 49 for the most part. Loop doesn’t seem to work, and the 9th rotary knob just seems to be there for twiddling only…. No function. This is the first MCU enabler controller and I used to using ACT and setting up my own maps. The MCU utility doesn’t midi learn new buttons so a crash course in the finer workings in cakewalk if you get around to it! Thanks again for the quick primer. Very useful.
Hey Mike, I remember I contacted you after a previous video about problems I was having hooking up my Arturia Keylab 61 to Cakewalk and you very kindly told me about the Hand Shake option, which certainly helped. However I was still not entirely happy with the way it was working, or not working, especially after trying the keyboard with Ableton as an experiment just to check that there wasn't a problem with my PC and found it all worked perfectly. I then contacted Arturia support who informed me that Bands Lab hadn't got the MCU protocol set up properly. With that I contacted Band Lab and they told me that one of there engineers would look into it. That was back in February. There have been a couple of up dates from Band Lab recently, neither of which mentioned the MCU protocol problem, so I contacted them again to be told that their engineers are still looking into it. It is a shame when in every other respect I find Cakewalk a brilliant DAW, that something like this lets them down. Hopefully they will sort it out soon. Love your video, very informative as usual.👍
Hey MIke, great stuff as always!! As some of the comments mentioned below, could you do one where you show how to connect external midi controller and set it in a way to make control changes in plugins? I think it would be an interesting topic to cover.. Thank you!!
Thanks ever so much Mike. This worked a treat for my Arturia 61 MKII. Needed all the steps you mentioned to make it work, including the 'disable handshake' and now all my controls work.
Thanks for this Mike. This was a great one. It is a pity you did not have a Korg nanoKontrol2... no automated fader movement but it does the basic job. Thanks again.
Success! I set up my Zoom R8 to Cakewalk. It works fine as an audio interface but did not work as a control surface. Your tip on disabling the handshake cured the problem. Thank you.
Thanks Mike, I'm using a Arturia Keylab Mkii and after this video this video I was finally able to get my hands on some of the control functions. However I ran into some problems. When I use the MCU mode, when I press the Save or Undo button, the mackie control WAI color strip moves to the bus strips only and I can no longer control track strips, and there is no button to let me switch the WAI strip back to track strips. And the other buttons in the second row (In Out Metro) are functionless buttons in MCU. Then when I changed the mode to HUI, I can control every track using the faders and knobs. However the master fader doesn't control the master volume in the bus strip. I've tried the solution you said in the comments and tried to Master Fader option from master to bus but it still doesn't work. Also, the write and undo button doesn't work in HUI, and the metro button somehow toggles the browser view, which is very weird. I really wish that I can make the controller control the correct things in Cakewalk. Is there any way for me to guide the buttons to executing the correct functions, and solve the aforementioned fader problems? Thanks a lot!
Please keep making good content like this. You are a very good teacher teaching from the basic to advanced. So so so helpful for musicians like me. I owe you.
The 'Disable Handshake' tip worked for me. I've just started learning on a Donner DMK25 Pro and that fixed my issues. Thanks! You got yourself a subscribe and a like for that.
Thanks Mike , it was very informative. Could you also make dedicated video for connecting Arturia Keylab Essential 49 mk 3 with Cakewalk because I searched and found no videos for this.
Very useful video. Here is an alternate way to access the preference configuration windows: While in the MIDI section of Cakewalk Preferences first open the Control Surfaces window and then you can select the "MIDI Devices" button to open the MIDI Devices window.
You got me working! I'm using Cakewalk with a Novation Launchkey MK3 Mini. Had midi settings right, but when I went into Utilities and checked HUI, my Mini lit up in DAW mode! Thanks, Mike!! 😊 It comes (and is made for) Ableton (Lite) but I just don't seem able to like Ableton much.
I've just had the same experience, although I can't get the stop/solo/mute button to work. I'd also like to be able to control the plugins with it. Have you had any luck with either of these issues.
Hi Mike Just bought a Presonus io station 24c per your recommendation. The Mark Mcleod link to get the MCU drivers just seems to default to this page again. Doesn't go to the download page. Tried searching online for these MMcL Mackie Control #1 but can't find them anywhere. I do have the 24c working somewhat with just the Mackie Control selected in surface control setup marked with red btw. on the panel view It will show a block of eight channels at a time with a red color. Not sure where to go from here. Always love your videos, Thanks Will
Thanks for that great video - helped me a lot undestanding the different ways on using a midi-controller. I have one question though - how do i map my midi-controllers physical buttons to certain VST-Effects? the keyboard itself (AKAI mini) is working flawlessly - but i dont get the knobs connected to let's say the reverb of an effect. regards
Hi Mike, I've been working to get a Novation LaunchKey 88 (mk3) going with Cakewalk and your video was a big help, thanks! In order to get my transport controls, faders, buttons, etc working I had to switch the Utilities/Mackie Control option for Protocol away from "Mackie Control Universal" and over to ""HUI (Beta)". While this works, it is not perfect as sometimes a fader movement (or other control) is missed requiring an additional movement to get the new value to register. I'm guessing that since it says "Beta" right in the option label, this mode isn't 100% stable yet, and may never be! Oh, well, it works well enough for my needs, and the note midi control is fine so it's a win!
Brilliant video Mike and it seems that the McLeod Mackie updates have been integrated into Cakewalk (except for the multiple Mackie device stuff). Anyway I now have my Novation SL MkIII working in 'InControl' Mode with Cakewalk after following your demonstration. The only thing different for me was to select the protocol 'HUI (Beta)' on the 'Mackie Control - 1' pop-up instead of 'Mackie Control Universal'. Works like a bought-one :)
thanks this might do the trick for my EZ Creator Fade controller ..I can see midi signals working but no faders moving nor start/-stop working..maybe disable handshake mode.
Hi Mike. I bought a M-audio oxygen pro mini and I am unable to control remotely from it. As long as it works with your method I'm going to look for you anywhere from Barcelona and give you a kiss!😅
Mike, any chance of getting details of exactly how you have your Pro G2 set up, like how to check and set up the buttons, how you have your buttons assigned. You have the experience, intelligence and patience that a number of us are short of, so any help would be greatly appreciated at least, by me. Thanks. Love your vids and the abundance if knowledge you set free to us acolytes !!
Hi, Thanks to this video my Launkey MKIII mini works at last with most of the Cakewalk controls. My experience was slightly different, I had to set the Mackie Control to the HUI protocol wich is in beta now in Cakewalk, instead of disabling the handshake. So if the handshake didn't work look at that one! It did the miracle for me!
Hi Alfred - can you point me to information on how to get the LaunchKey MKIII set up? You mentioned HUI protocol in the Beta. How I do I get access to the beta. I would love to make this work! Thanks.
@@AharonRabinowitz Go to 8:50. When the dialog setup opens under the column F1 through F8 there's a choice box. Set that to HUI (Beta). For the rest all the info is in here in this video.
@@alfredgrupstra Thanks. But my confusion is coming before that. 1. what are you choosing for the controller/surface (since they don't list our keyboard there)? and 2. What are you choosing for Input Port/Output Port? Thanks!
Hi Mike - Thanks for some good tips from your vid - I have been trying to set up an M Audio Oxygen Pro 61 with Cakewalk. Using the Preset Editor and setting up Mackie I have some controls working but not all - I can't seem to get the Zoom button/function working from the keyboard - just wondering whether you have any experience with the Oxygen Pro (you recommend Oxygen on your Gear section) and whether there are any templates for this keyboard?
So this is the best video ever. I've had the KEYLAB61 MKII for a while and this is the first time I've used the transport controls to move things around. I somehow switched the WAI to the bus controls instead of the tracks, how do I switch it back? I pressed the 'Save' key under the DAW commands / user... but now I can't switch the WAI back to tracks. Thanks for the awesome video!
My Faderport might be broken as I can get the slider and pan knob to work, but none of the buttons. I tried the legacy Presonus Faderport and AZ drivers and got the same result. Nevertheless, thanks for doing what you can to help. There was a day when every controller of any kind supported Cakewalk, but none of them do anymore.
This worked form me using the M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini. Disable Handshake allowed the transport controls to work. The only issue is now the the sliders and wheels give inaccurate results depending on the speed you move them. EDIT: If you set the DAW mode to Bitwig it works better.
Hi Mike. Thank you for the video. I have an oxygen61 from M-AUDIO and I can't get it to work as a surface controller in Cakewalk. Can you help me with this model?
Thank you for making great and high quality tutorials. You are very good at explaining! I watched this video with great interest since I have a two weeks old M-Wave SMC-PAD with buttons for play, pause, record and so, that I am still trying to configure. Cakewalk by Bandlab is not responding to anything else but the pads. Is there anyhow in Cakewalk by Bandlab that I can monitor the raw MIDI signals from any connected devices to see if anything is going into Cakewalk from the M-Wave in the first place, and/or which MIDI / CC / note, commands it sends? 🤔
Hi Mike, I've been looking forward to this video and you didn't disappoint! Thanks again for a clear, well-paced explanation. I've been holding off buying the Presonus IoStation 24C because of Cakewalk compatibility concerns. This video has reassured me and I've gone ahead and ordered it! I will let you know how I get on with controlling Cakewalk with the Presonus, and I'm also looking forward to trying Studio One bundled with it. Again, many thanks, much appreciated!
So did you get the IoStation to work with Cakewalk? What about following track selection? Does the device focus on the track that has been selected in Cakewalk?
Great info Mike! I love all the new gear that's out but, I also love my rack full of great old modules. I control them with a Kurzweil controller linked to a MOTU midi express128. I just purchased the Arturia Keylab 61 Essential. Is there a way I can use the Keylab USB to control plugins and the MOTU to control my rack midi modules at the same time?
Wow I can't believe it worked!! I never thought I'd be able to use the faders on my vstudio 20 interface with cakewalk! Now .... how do I assign all of the controls??? Lol
Hi Mike, been learning from your cakewalk tutorials, thank you so much. Currently, I have an old Novation launch key 25 Mk2. I can't seem to make it work with any of the built-in VST midi's that came with Cakewalk. Tried the SI-bass, SI-strings and others. It only response to my PC keyboard. All the Midi drivers input/output are set correctly. My MIDI works fine when using Kontak player & Komplete Kontrol. Hope you can help me out.
Mike, Thank you for what you do! Can you PLEASE HELP? Iam trying to use an Akai Professional MiDiMiX Midi Controller and I can not for the life of me figure this out. I've never had trouble like this with anything. Thanks to your video here, a couple random buttons light up and do random things, but only a couple and they do not line up or make sense. Most still do nothing. I can't find anything else online about it. You are my only hope!
Hi Mike, do you have any ideas how to manually assign MIDI knobs to certain knobs and faders in the differnet cakewalk views or even inside the stock plugins like the different SI-Instruments or the Cakewalk TTS-1? I remember that it was very easy to get this done in Ableton a vew years ago, when I had a look at a demo version of it. I've got an Akai MPK mini MKii and a Nektar Impact LX88+ Thank you for the very helpful videos about cakewalk and all the possibilities it comes with!
another great video. unfortunatly for me, didnt work with my Alesis QX49. once i set up the output as well i cant use as piano anymore, no soud, and only 1 knob do the paning and in the oposite direction....any tip? thanks
Hello Mike - I know that you can`t cover all devices connected to Cakewalk ! - I have a Allen & Heath QU Mixer (QU32) - The Mixer is set to work via MIDI but I not able to connect the 2 devices for the remote funktion (rocording and playback works) - (I have installed the A&H driver and also the correct MIDI Channel and the protocoll as well [Mackie]) - Is it possible that you do a video to connect "Cakewalk with A&H QU Series" ? - By the way - I bought a 12 hour video (very good one) but the explanation about the remote funktion is not the one I need because the video describes A&H / Qbase ... (If the english sounds a bit starnge ... I`m from Germany) - BTW - Your videos are all the time great ! - THX
Hi !! amazing video but about makie control i still have doubts about , i have a arturia mk2 and once i could reach play and pause with the press buttons of the device , but there was a lot of options to set up. but some of them i could not set up Would you find annoying, to make a video of how to set up and use nicely the makie control in cakewalk? and which could be the possible erros to make once doing that........ kind regards thank you always for your help, you are the best!!
Hi Mike! This is the tutorial I've been waiting for, thanks for making it. But I'm still a bit confused. I see you're using an Arturia keyboard rather than the NI S88 you've used before. I have an NI A61 and despite following your instructions I still can get the transport buttons to work with CbB. Any ideas?
@@nickellis9251 hmmm, I was just reading that they were slow to get it to the mkii (but its on mki). But that was a year ago, so maybe start with a firmware update?
Hey mike, love ur videos. Very informative and engaging. Have you every used the generic control surface option(vs maki)? I have a controller set up with that option and it controls tracks fine, but i cant get it to control busses.
Love your videos, I am a Cakewalk and Sonar Plat user. I recently purchased a Arturia KeyLab Essential 49 mk3 and love it, however, I cannot seem to get the control surfaces to work in Cakewalk or Sonar. I have followed your video here, which is helpful, but I b=need some other direction. I have attempted multiple time to create profiles using The MIDI Control Center, but to no avail. Any suggestions how to proceed?
Hi Mike! This is the tutorial I've been waiting for....... I'm using M-AUDIO OXYGEN PRO 61, and in my case the thing doesn’t work. If you have another solution, please help me ... God bless you.
Thanks Mike, rght now i want co use cakewalk with a wing console from behringer but, i cant to connect the second XT, besides msmcleud software its not available
Is this the method you used to set up your Arturia keyboard? I know it comes with integration for many DAWs, but I don’t think Cakewalk is one of them. I still don’t have one ☹️ but I keep hoping...
Hi Mike. Thanks for the great content (as per usual). I got my Arturia KeyLab 61 mkII Working with the MCU driver and turning off the handshake as you suggested. How did you get the fader on the right to control the Master fader in CW? All the others map nicely to track 1-8 in CW but the “Master” fader on the Arturia does some weird panning thing.
Hey Rob, try going into Utilities > Mackie Controller - 1 and then at the bottom left, select 'Bus' under the Master Fader section. Counter intuitive I know, but its worked for me on a number of controllers!
I love your vids. I have been using Cakewalk/Sonar for almost 30 yrs, and I learn something from all your videos. Is there somewhere I could get templates for X-Touch and Cakewalk to work together with more functionality? Or a place to get tutorials just on that specific combination of hardware and software?
Mike, good evening. First, thank you for taking the time to put together this channel and curate this content. It's been tremendously helpful. Recently, however, I bought a Labkey 61 MKII, looking forward to the kind of DAW control you demonstrate in Cakewalk. Sadly, I cannot get this to work at all. I get the MIDI Keys input fair enough, but no DAW control at all. I tried all the fixes you suggested, but they still won't respond in CW. I'm starting to contemplate moving to another DAW...but I really like CW. I tried to find and install the MMcL drivers, but the link is down. Any other suggestions. Thanks again...great channel!
Hi Mike. You're excellent at this..an invaluable support and the only you tuber I felt I had to support on patreon! Great channel. I do have a Q which I think would be helpful to others as well. I use Icon Qcon G2. The Master fader doesn't map, How do I fix that? All other faders work. If I can sneak in a second Q. I don't understBand what function hitting the red 'select' button serves. What is it's purpose. I don't see what it's meant to do. But mapping the master fader is my real head scratcher. Thanks.
Hey Tim, thanks for that. Sorry just answering very quickly from my phone during a session. The master fader works as expected for me, I dont recall any additional setup. It may be worth testing with the free program MIDI-OX to make sure the fader is working, and its not a hardware issue.
Sir I am troubleshooting problem from cakewalk I have installed melodyne but audio to midi is not converting it is saying choose any algorithm to transfer audio material I have tried every algorithm but it is not converting plz plz help
Not directly related to today's topic but to MIDI controllers and Cakewalk in general I observe that, in the Preferences MIDI Devices section that many hardware and even software MIDI I/O sources have multiple entries, including one listed as "controller name (automap)". What is the significance of "automap"?

Love your vids and the abundance if knowledge you set free to us acolytes !!
Excellent video. Does UF8 controller works with Cakewalk
Rebooting the ARTURIA worked, but that seems a little extreme.
Love it🎼
~Gratitude🕊️
It totally worked. Thanks a lot !!!
Great info!
You re the BEST!!!
Great video! Thank you!
Wow I can't believe it worked!! I never thought I'd be able to use the faders on my vstudio 20 interface with cakewalk! Now .... how do I assign all of the controls??? Lol
Hello .. you said (or using my smartphone ) and I wished you explain that..
I use a tablet as a controller using an app called 'TouchDaw'. Download the app, then I did a Google search to set it up. I hope this helps.
Your videos are great. Thank you.
Any ideas on how to get an Alesis QX25 to control volume faders and pan knobs? Thanks
Cakewalk and Presonus studio 24C Audio Interface can be use together
Any control for iPhone? The touchdaw only operates for android?
Great video! Does the novation launchkey 61 MK2 supports this MCU?
I like it when you said hit the "dislike button twice " :-) - BTW, you are awesome, your channel is awesome.
thank you so much you are greate my bcf2000 is back to live
Hi Mike, do you have any ideas how to manually assign MIDI knobs to certain knobs and faders in the differnet cakewalk views
or even inside the stock plugins like the different SI-Instruments or the Cakewalk TTS-1?
I remember that it was very easy to get this done in Ableton a vew years ago, when I had a look at a demo version of it.
I've got an Akai MPK mini MKii and a Nektar Impact LX88+
Thank you for the very helpful videos about cakewalk and all the possibilities it comes with!
another great video. unfortunatly for me, didnt work with my Alesis QX49. once i set up the output as well i cant use as piano anymore, no soud, and only 1 knob do the paning and in the oposite direction....any tip?
Any ideas?
Hi Nick, you must have me confused with some other charming RUclipsr, as I havnt used the S88 in my videos. Do you have mk1 or 2?
@@CreativeSauce Sorry Mike, I thought you had. I bought mine under a year ago so I guess it's a Mk2.
I can't use cakewalk because when I hear cake I get hungry. Thanks again for all of your videos!
🤔😋😅
Hi Mike! This is the tutorial I've been waiting for....... I'm using M-AUDIO OXYGEN PRO 61, and in my case the thing doesn’t work. If you have another solution, please help me ... God bless you.
I just got a Pro 49 and haven't anything working yet. How about you?
I believe the answer is to use MIDIIN3 as the In Port. It seems to have got the transport, faders and pans working.
Thanks Mike, rght now i want co use cakewalk with a wing console from behringer but, i cant to connect the second XT, besides msmcleud software its not available
wow some nice equipment u have there Mike, You must feel well privileged! ;)
Is this the method you used to set up your Arturia keyboard? I know it comes with integration for many DAWs, but I don’t think Cakewalk is one of them. I still don’t have one ☹️ but I keep hoping...
Yes, this is the method I used for my Arturia KeyLab 88 Mkii :)
@@CreativeSauce Thanks Mike, I will try that out!
@@CreativeSauce That worked a treat! Mike, you are a gentleman!
so excited but then; no mcu pro option in cakewalk device . can i use m-audio mk3 to control cakewalk?
Hello dear there is a control room section like in cubase?
I love your vids. I have been using Cakewalk/Sonar for almost 30 yrs, and I learn something from all your videos. Is there somewhere I could get templates for X-Touch and Cakewalk to work together with more functionality? Or a place to get tutorials just on that specific combination of hardware and software?
Hey Mike can u share the keyboard integration of ur keylab mk2 ,I too have that😅
Mike, good evening. Thanks again...great channel!
you mean keylab mkii?...I use the same . Works great in studio one but im scratching my head with cakewalk bandlab
Is there a foot switch option to start recording?
hi Mike, thankyou so much for brings this topic on youtube, but im currently using alesis VI61, i searrch on the manual book and theres nothing talk about Mackie MCU mode. i tried all you've listed on the video but nothing works. the play stop pause fast forrward etc button nothing works. any tips?
Mike, is that desk custom built or did you buy it somewhere?
Hi Dan, I designed and built it myself. You can see here: ruclips.net/video/_KFrNO-7cN0/видео.html
