You can open the Console view by pressing "D" on the keyboard. Also, you can zoom in and out holding Alt and then scrolling. Split tracks by pressing "S", mute tracks/track sections by pressing "K" as well. Those are some of the most useful ones I haven't yet seen on your videos. As always, excellent content.
I know you're a very good teacher, i go from tutorials to tutorials but when i get frustrated i always revert back to your channel and i truly understand what i need to do. Although i consider myself a slow learner your way of explanation helps me so much. Thanks mike 100 %
I've been using Cakewalk for over 20 years and I've never learned about the snap "by" function. That could have saved me alot of headaches over the years! Thanks Mike. I think I never have the patience to go through and learn all these little things on my own, so it's good to just have someone show me.
I've been using Cakewalk on and off since 1995. Only now do I know what Snap By does. 🤦🏼♂️ The number of times that would have come in handy! Thanks Mike, love your channel.
Mike you amaze me with your knowledge of Cakewalk. I've been using Cakewalk products since Pro 9 and I'm always learning something new from you. It might be interesting for you to give some history on how you learned so much about the software. I have many versions of Scott Garrigus's books on the use of Sonar, X1 thru X3 and that was always my go to. I'm sure we all have our bag of tricks on how we set up our projects. I mostly record acoustic driven projects so my knowledge is pretty good with say Folk ballads or Lite music. When it comes to Rock or heavy metal or as they say current Pop music there is a whole different set of fundamentals in setting up a project. It might be interesting to have others tell us their 'bag of tricks" as well.
I honestly don't know where it comes from... forums, articles... some of it also goes to the same place as guitar picks, and I have to research it again!
Hi Mike, I recently discovered your site! Thank you very much for presenting the programs virtually, because unfortunately I speak less English. But the way you show and tell the "secrets", I really enjoy understanding your messages! I really appreciate the many, many hours you put into introducing Cakewalk. This makes it so much easier for me to learn and explore Cakewalk!
Big help on the "snap by"! I have been using cakewalk since 2006. I never took the time to stop and learn what "snap by" really meant! Thank you. PS. just joined your facebook page!
Hey Mike, I hope u'r well! Just wanted to say thanks for another great video! Also a little tip on Docking.. pressing keyboard "D" will toggle the Console and Track views. I use that one very often.. Cheers!
Mike, I love this. I specially like the way you explain very simple and slowly. I'm just a guy who plays music for fun and most of the time the simpliest things make much easier.
Mike, I've been using this program off and on since the late 80's and I still learn, and re-learn, new things about it. It's always a hard balance of learning, creating, and playing music, or learning recording techniques. Thanks again for your videos. I've learned more from them then any other source.
My biggest life-saving discovery in Cakewalk is the "view undo" feature. Often times I'll accidentally press some mystery key that unexpectedly changes the layout-say, maybe all my tracks are suddenly resized. But with alt+z, I can instantly get the old view back. Hopefully this trick will be of use to somebody else!
Hi Mike, I learn new tricks from you all the time and I've been using Cakewalk since it was called Twelve Tone Systems Cakewalk and it was on floppy disk and didn't even record audio. It was just a midi sequencer. I had to stripe TC on track 8 of my tape machine and play it to kick off Cakewalk reading the TC from the tape and then I would record the audio on tracks 1 thru 7 along with the sequenced drums and strings and other stuff. Technology is much easier now. I love your channel and learn great tips. Thanks
Thanks Mike, been using Cakewalk since before it did audio, around 1992-93. I always noticed the snap by option, but never took the time to learn what its was. I was splitting clips on the down beats and lining them up so I can snap to... now I dont have to. Thanks again!!
A couple of things I'd add to docking tricks, if you haven't already covered them: the "D" key acts as minimise/restore for the Multidock, and Shift+D will maximise the multidock so that it covers Track View entirely. These keystrokes are essential to me when I work on my 14" notebook. The other is how to get the Browser to run full-length on the right side (I notice that you have this set up in your videos). To do it, click on the Docking Options icon and even if Dock at Right is already checked, select it again. It's especially handy when you've used Shift+D to maximise the multidock
I love these "secrets" videos! I'm almost certain that my issues lately with snapping in the PRV are related to the features you explained. It would be a relief if I finally got this right now!
Thanks for all the fantastic cakewalk videos Mike! How about a video detailing how to save and archive a completed project? Do you just save a cakewalk bundle or stems or something else?
And to reinforce Mike's point about using a drive other than 'C' for data is that it's much easier to manage backups. I've always setup my PC with a 'C' for OS, and a 'D' for data for more than 30 years now.
Great tips as always Mike. I'd just add for any newbies - always back up your projects etc at least to another disk - don't just rely on having one copy! :-)
Top right of the pro-channel you should sees a "Show/Hide Pro-Channel" button. When you hide the pro-channel it should then show you the inspector view in its place.
Another tip.. using the "D" key on the tab of the tool you want to expand or close; double clicking the tab will toggle it up, half-way, and then again toggle it to full screen.. The "D" key on the tab, just hides it (not remove it) that's what the [x] is for on the multi-doc display
Always learning something - never explored the duplicate channel in console view - just ignored it mostly. Wish several things could live simultaneously in the dock section (Console and Markers one example - like the old days). This FB group is starting to pay dividends in many ways - I'd say a "Win/Win" situation. Can't believe how many views in just a few hours :D
Great content , simple but great explanations. Thank you ! I have a quick question or opinion request. I use SONAR X3 since for a long time. Which is no support at all. Is there any advantage when compared with using Bandlab like sound quality , engine difference etc.. ? Does it worth to skip Bandlab ?
On a tab with console or whatever you have there. Clicking opens it up a set height.. double click it takes the whole docked-screen height, click again, it goes back to the set height; one thing I had be searching for is, how do I minimize the tab? well you can grab the top of the displayed tab which is an extra step.. mouse, drag.. but you can use simply the "D" key and it will minimize the open tab.. THIS IS Awesome.. been hunting this down for years.. It so nice. one keystroke, and done (hit "D" key again, and opens up to the last height setting, eh? cool?
Ah!!! I knew those ones! The 'undock' for the tabs I use all the time. I got two monitors the first one, and bigger is for Cakewalk main screen and the second one for the Console. It's amazing to work this way. I got you one nice tip when working with MIDI. We can hide tracks for the MIDI and use only the VSTi track, that is the 'most important'. But we can 'unhide them already by clicking on 'Strips' and then 'Track Manager' The window with all tracks, hidden or not, is displayed so we can make them visible again. Isn't it a good one to make a video? Regards from Rio
Mike, how do you get the 'transport' cursor to stay in Place while zooming in and out? without that, it is really frustrating to go chase where the transport cursor is.. Also is there a way to keep the transport cursor in place while the tracks move under it?
Hi Mike, thanks for another informative video. Recently I've been (unsuccessfully) trying to make use of the "Draw pattern" tool on automation lanes. I expected it to work in a similar fashion to how it behaves in the piano roll: you select a pattern of midi notes and then "paint" with them. But it doesn't... It doesn't really seem to do anything on automation lanes. I've tried all combinations of shift/ctrl/alt keys when selecting and dragging it, but the tool doesn't actually do anything. I've looked online for solutions and found nothing. Any thoughts? Am I missing something, or did the developers overlook it (I found no answers in the documentation either)?
Mike.. I have two things I'm confused about: A).. on the Tool bar (smart, select, move, edit, draw, erase) there another "Snap" like drop down.. what does that control? B).. I can set the gridlines, and gridline snap to work in the PRV, but how do you get grid lines on the TRK view C). How do you effectively use NUDGE.. it doesn't seem to work as easily as ProTools.. so what about that? Also.. Found that the multidock.. when you click to open it, once, it opens up half way up leaving view of the tracks view.. if you click again, it will fill the screen; click again, it goes to half.. If you press "D" it will minimize the selected multi-docked control module
Hi my name is Michael bayley and im new to cakewalk, i have 1 question for now, does cakewalk have horns such as trumpets 🎺 or do i have to download an external plugin??
Mike, I have been following you for quite a while now. I consider myself a novice at recording and mixing and have found these videos very educational. I started out using Cool Edit Pro, so I am dating myself. Cakewalk is a great toolbox and thanks for showing us what is in that box to be productive. Any suggestions on how to get a project out here to be critiqued by someone like yourself?
Here's a question.. when you have multiple tabs docked, is there a way to toggle thru them like you can do on a Browser to cycle thru the tabs.. Chrome Shift-TAB will move you thru the browser tabs.. Alt-TAB lets you toggle thru all running apps, to bring them to the foreground.
Hi Mike, I’m not English so I ask straight ahead. i’m using undock often but when I close a window with the “-“ in the richt upper corner, I only can find it back by switching from advanced view to another and back. Is there another easyer way
You can either use the Console view (Mike explains in this video how to access it), or the view at the left of your screen. You use the sliders, up and down. Pretty straightforward once you get to them.

Thanks, Mike. There is always some trick that I did not know. In this case, the TO or BY snap (It was stucked in "TO" for whole years haha)
