Another tip is that when you automating a clip you can hold Shift then click on the clip where the automation lane is not (above the line or below it, but still on the clip) that will quickly take you back to the “clip” mode, so you dont have to move your mouse to the track to change back to clips. You can also hold Shift and click on an automation lane to select it and edit it, so you dont have to go back to the track and select what lane you wanna automate

this video is packed with SO much useful information!! i had no idea cakewalk was capable of this much. i never even noticed that there was a bus pane or that you could automate busses like tracks. so cool! thanks so much for this tutorial!
I would suggest you to reduce the playback speed and watch closely. & yea. Automation is super useful. Especially in the kind of music (electronic) I'm into. Good luck
Like all your videos this is a really in depth tutorial of automation. I have to slow down your videos even though I probably have to watch them several times too. did you read the whole manual 100 times? : ) Thank you so much to spread your amazing knowledge! away.
@adk_studios I have a book on Sonar. It's almost 1500 pages and still doesn't cover everything. It's amazing how feature rich Cakewalk is. I don't feel a need to buy the new Sonar. I could live three lifetimes and still not know Cakewalk through and through. Thanks for all the info you put out. It's a great help for those of us that struggle with the software.
Gain is the level of audio signal before processing. Volume is the level of audio signal after processing (volume fader in the console) Additional info - A lot of VST FX plugins are modelled after analogue hardware. And they might operate the best when audio at certain gain is input to it. This process of increasing or decreasing the audio signal level before processing is called gain staging. Look it up
No. Both control the level of audio signal. We call the level before processing as gain while we call the level after processing as volume. Processing is done by VST FX plugins
Thank you so much for the video. Your videos are the best! I have a question: you can use the fader in the mixer to write an automation lane for 'volume', Question: Is there a way that you can assign the fader to write automation for a different MIDI parameter such as 'Modulation', meaning that you can move the fader up and down to create an automation lane for Modulation parameter during playback?
This was perfect! I think the only thing left was using knobs or surface controls and how to automate using them. Also I don't know if there's a function like the one in Fl studio called Last Tweaked which it helps you to know the parameter name and the knob or fader is linked to it by moving it. Is there something like this in cakewalk?
I would have loved to show how to control with external devices. But if only I had any such device..... I'm afraid there isn't anything like "last tweaked" in CbB.
@@adk_studios unfortunately there's not such option. I was searching yesterday because I have a controller with 2 knobs. I could see which parameter was assigned to the knob my moving it on my controller but i couldn't see the 2nd one, although it was assigned to another parameter. So this is why I thought cakewalk maybe had a last tweaked option or something similar, to see the name parameter assigned to my knob and what's it name, but i didn't find nothing about this. All I could find was the remote control on automation track and it list all the parameters available for each plugin but it doesn't tell you what knob is being assigned to them.
@@adk_studios Thanks…just a point on tempo automation…could I firstly record all of my tracks at a slow tempo then, when they are all bounced down to a final stereo mix adjust the tempo to suit at the end without affecting pitch of the vocals? (I’m new to Cakewalk) …Thanks again
@@adk_studios Yeah…Thanks very much…Could I increase or decrease the tempo of a vocal track in audiosnap to match the global tempo without warping the vocals?…they seem to be lagging behind the rest a little 😐
As far as I can tell, warping is how audio snap works. If you don't want to warp, you will have to split the audio clips and fix them in time by yourself
Effective videotutorial, thanks. A kind question: can VSTi Program Change be automated? I tried clicking "W" on the top of the VSTi UI and than changing the Program/preset in the UI while playing, but nothing happened...Thanks in advance!
Hi, so for automations, I know there is volume and that, but I would like to ask where I can find high and low cut. The tips for how to create in the automation lane is great, and with this, I want to create some sort of high cut effect. However, I can’t find high cut or low cut in the automation lane choices, neither in the other automation sections. Do I need a plugin with high cut??
At 3:29 you can see Pro channel options. One of them is for EQ. If you open the EQ inside the Pro channel section, you can enable filters in it. Then right click the filter's knob and select "automation snapshot"
I have a question. Sometimes I open up a plugin like vital, and some factors of the synthesizer change after a while. For example, I open up vital, but then the first oscillator's audio turns off after using vital for a bit, and I have to turn it back on.
When in a CbB project, Open Preferences Under Project, click MIDI. Enable "Zero Controllers When Play Stops". If its already enabled, then disable it. This will affect all the instruments that might need the MIDI CC to return to zero. (It mostly applies to plugins where the Modulation Wheel, the one controlling that CC plays a huge part in giving expression).
I need help :( I have a problem, I have two instruments, in this case 2 "vital" tracks, I automated the pitch in the first one, and in the second one I did it too. And for example when I try to move the clip in the midi, the two Automation lines are interchanged with each other. I don't know if I made myself understand...
Interchanged? I don't think that is suppose to happen. It could be a bug? Just to be safe, create the second vital track without duplicating the first one.
I'm trying to use Cakewalk's own FX Transpose to transpose some MIDI notes, but when I go to Clips -> Clip Automation -> the only option available is Velocity. Any clue what is causing this?

In CbB, hybrid tracks go by the name instrument track. (MIDI + instrument out). So, simple add an instrument plugin as a "simple instrument track from the CbB browser
