@Matti cat If you want to get technical about it, then sure, every animation by virtue of being an animation, moves frame by frame. We all know that's not what they meant. Frame-by-frame is a term for a specific style of animation, however redundant it may be. There's a difference between hand-drawn frame by frame, and using a program to motion-tween a puppet between key frames. A motion-tweened puppet saves time and money but isn't capable of the same squash and stretch techniques used in Cuphead, because the program is filling in the gap between key frames instead of there being a natural transition. Hand-drawn frame by frame allows for bigger movements and a lot more squash and stretch, and crazy transitions. This is the type of animation where smear frames are necessary. Especially with this being drawn on paper instead of on a computer, that reduces your room for error. Instead of hitting ctrl+z, you'll need to start over or open it in a program to fix the lineart, and it also means every frame needs to be scanned as well. Look at the difference between Cuphead and a mostly motion-tweened show like The Lion Guard. Every animation goes "frame by frame" but that's not what that term means when it comes to talking about an animation style.

This makes me appreciate the game even more! What a masterpiece
Anyone here after the DLC rediscovering their love for cuphead and the lengths studio MDHR went to to make this awesome game
OMG I love the songs and the animations
Man this soundtrack and the game are such a masterpiece
The game is beautiful and this behind the scenes makes me appreciate it even more. Huge thanks to everyone involved.
It’s so awesome to see how much effort developers put into making games for our entertainment.
Wow - Came here for the making-of animation, and ended up seeing my old uni music faculty profs recording the soundtrack! These guys are great, top notch Toronto musicians.
The game is awesome. I love gameplay, characters, bosses, music. The game is just perfect.
when i want developers to take their time making games, i want it to turn out like cuphead not like y*ndere simulator...
@3 CreamyCats sorry to break it to you, but yandere simulator isnt even close to being finished and its not a good game in every aspect. this isnt my opinion, it's literally everyone's opinion online
Even if you aren't a Cuphead fan, you really need to appreciate the effort put in for this
Its quite amazing that the bosses were all done by drawings and sculptures
Ugh back to the beautiful frame by frame animation on paper and all, love it
I love how in the recording of floral fury they show every boss.... *except floral fury*

U know. The magic algorythm.
The Studio's youtube page originally published this.
You don't see that many hand drawn animated games, I'd like to see more, and, this is coming from a pixel artist.
how can a pixel be an artist
@@stabbityjoe7588 its what its called, Seinfeld.
@@stabbityjoe7588 hey! pixels have dreams too you know
Sundered is another must play of the genre.
Cuphead is a great game, I have a room in my heart full of Cuphead, Thank you studio MDHR For a masterpiece at work dedicated to 1930s animation
I only hand draw and seeing this makes me want to draw something, even something simple. Honestly I always wanted this game but now I just want it even more. I'll get it as soon as possible.
Waiting for the new dlc i love the hard work they put in this game to make it so unique at least for me this is one of the best games of this gen console without a doubt.
I dont care how much we have to wait till the dlc drops to anyone because i know they are trying to make perfection.
We even get to see them work on delicious last course, im prepared to wait aslong as possible ^^
They went back to the roots of animation and came out with nothing synthetic. Just complete and inspiring effort that shines when you see it made and finished. I love it! :D
Seriously, did you have _any_ stock in this? Because if not then you're fricking legendary.
Speaking of legendary. Chalice 04:58 is fricking adorable.
i did spot some lazyness but for 99.83% of the game its perfect
And the DLC is almost here boyz
I'd say the only thing that comes close to "synthetic" is the digital color they used, but even then the grainy film effect masks it well and makes it look organic!
The art and music make the game so enjoyable. It's rare that game developers put this much effort into their games
Words cannot express how happy I am cuphead succeeded! The hard work and dedication alone that went into this hope project is incredible to see especially as an aspiring artist myself.
As a game Dev, this must've been absolute hell to make
This game is about 3 years old but still it’s insanely good
Edit: 3 months ago and this much likes thanks y’all
Edit: 11 months old
Same
Withered Man and hard
And insanely hard
It's probably gonna be the most memorable game because of its art and it's just like dark souls PewDiePie would say.
Does the age matter?
And people still demand the dlc when they see all off this blood sweat and tears being put into this masterpiece.
4:37 is my favorite! he does a lil’ dance and it’s just a nice and minor animation to enjoy at the start of each round playing as Mugman
This is the exact reason that Cuphead will forever be my favorite video game. I've never seen so much effort put into a video game before and it blows me away. I'll wait decades if I have to for more Cuphead content because I know it's gonna be great when it's done. Much love to Kristofer and all of Studio MDHR. I can't thank you enough for the masterpiece that is Cuphead.
This is possibly the last bit of media that required animation cels.
@@herr_crustovsky it did use cells for inking, but not for painting.
@@herr_crustovsky it looks like they outlined the frames digitally though?
@@nohomo4774 no, they just coloured in digitally since they would be the same quality paper or digital
I feel bad I didn’t appreciate all the hard work that was put into this game the first time I played it!
These guys literally worked so hard on this game!
Me too!
I have a lot more respect for cuphead now because now i am seeing all the hard work put into it☺️
The Animation, the music, the art style it all is done so well it’s honestly a miracle I’m alive the same time this game came out
The music is AMAZING but hits different when you actually see the musicians play 😍
Never knew the animation was hand drawn, no wonder it looks so authentic!
CoolDudeClem, Wow... you never noticed that?
What i love is tjat thr characters bounce in a very rythmical way. Gives them a life a lot of game characters dont have.
Yeah, not just standing there lifeless.
Such an incredible project. This takes a lot of creativity, passion and patience to do this much of hard work. Props to the whole crew for making this game.
I finally beat the game recently and I have to say it’s definitely one of my favourite games ever ❤
Ive played this game for many hours, but never took the time to appreciate how beautiful, crisp, and efortful these animations are.
This is so amazing. So much love included in all production, i reaaaally appreciate this game!
This honestly is my favorite art style out of any game created
Best!
the amount of hardwork these people put making this video game is really respectable ,that's why this game is a masterpiece , the characters , the bosses and their stupid and funny acts with a twist of hard difficulty makes this game really fun to play
Watching this four years later, im still in shock and awe the deticated love, patience and work put into this game.
and no, i still havent beat the game.
I can't wait for the DLC, this game is such a fresh air in the platforming genre
They put SO much unnecessary effort into this game, and I love it. They put their hearts into this game, and I can't congratulate them enough. These guys are awesome and they deserve more love and recognition.
Let’s just do a rehearsal.
* *plays floral fury with absolute perfection* *
The more I watch the more I appreciate cuphead... The art was all hand drawn the music live recorded I love this game... I can't wait for the dlc
I truly hope the original artform of animation never disappears. It looks so much more pleasant than 3d animated content.
7 Dislikes from people who just don't like super quality animation that oozes sweat, tears, sleepless nights, wrecked nerves and blood. My god this is so satisfying to watch all the drawed frames. My eyes drip honey every time I see animation this good 8'D
Or 7 dislikes from people who thought it was too hard and that the developers should have done it easier...

Remembering way back when I saw the very first trailer I cannot express how happy I am that these guys finished their passion project and that it turned out to be a very solid and successful game.
This whole game has James Baxter level if effort put into it. You guys worked so hard and made something absolutely incredible
