California's Prison Isolation Units: Necessary or Inhumane? | KQED News

- In Sacramento, California lawmakers are delving into a growing national controversy over special security units that are used to isolate thousands of inmates from the regular prison population. Civil rights groups say long-term isolation amounts to torture while state corrections officials say the units are necessary and the conditions are humane.
Around the state there are four of these facilities, which are known as Security Housing Units. The most controversial is at Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City.
At the heart of the debate: conditions in the units (many inmates are held in windowless cells and have been denied everything from calendars and sweatpants to phone calls); criteria that determine which prisoners are placed there and how they get out; and the lengthy terms some inmates spend in the facilities.
More than 500 California prisoners have been locked in the special units for 10 years or longer, according to state data. Of those people, 78 prisoners have been held inside for more than 20 years.
Over the years, authorities have allowed media into Pelican Bay's Security Housing Unit, but access has been limited and the inmates carefully selected by staff.
However, top corrections officials granted unusual access to a team of reporters and videographers from the Center for Investigative Reporting and KQED. We visited all areas of Pelican Bay's Security Housing Unit except for a section housing leaders of a 2011 hunger strike.
Using a small camera mounted to a wall, our team was able to record Beasley exercising with a rubber handball in the small concrete pen (prison staff only began allowing the balls last year). At all other times-day and night-he is held in his cell alone. While skylights allow filtered sunlight into the units, there are no windows.

Imagine being innocent and in this situation. You know they are out there.
Dino A I will be crazy, when I’ll come out even if I’m not a criminal I’ll be one it’s so sad about staying in place like this for no reason. It’ll break you mental state
Idk you likely have to do sick things to get this treatment. I very strongly doubt that anyone has be put into this situation without thorough evidence of a crime that suggests they deserve this.
Splarff the world isn’t always right, sometime it’ll happen mistake, like here in Italy a poor guy left the prison after 7 year (of 14 if I’m not mistaken because) only because he was INNOCENT!!! The prison or the judge didn’t even pay for this...

This dudes hand-eye coordination shouldn’t be ignored..
it’s ez with practice, ima goalie and the hand eye coordination doesn’t get u noticed
It shouldn’t be ignored when convicted murders have learned to master the skill. The short story to solitary confinement is that it fine tunes criminals or even innocent people making them crazy (crazier) and deadly (deadlier) . That’s the governments idea of rehabilitation (well it’s what they want you to believe is them trying to rehabilitate) what it really is...the government making their citizens more criminal then they started out in hopes that when they are released they will come right back and the prisons for profit (private prisons) will seem necessary and will continue to make billions (because they all have stock in them) off of the incarceration of the citizens it’s sworn to protect.
Mr Manga lol sorry wrongful incarceration is a bit of a sore subject for me considering Ive been fighting for my loved one for over two years now... honestly thought I wasn’t sure if you were being sarcastic or not and right away I thought of a convicted killer with quick reflexes and it was concerning.

Keeping people in isolation for long periods of time is torture, imo it’s a fate worse than death and I can’t believe our government would allow this
I spent one night in a small jail cell for something that In did not do when I was 16 years old, (My mother had to wait till my dad was not able to see me come in the house). When my mother picked me up, I was soooo incredibly relieved that she got me out, that i never got in trouble ever because of the fear of that cell. The feeling in that cell was sooo lonely and hopeless, that I can not imagine being in that box for months. it would make me a totally different person.

Horrifically inhumane. These men will come out more dangerous than when they went in. This is not rehabilitation. This is torture. And it will cause great anger and bitterness. Might want to not run into them on the outside.
Rehabilitation doesn't work on all prisoners, there is no point wasting time on money on rehabilitation when it will not work.
Imagine the anxiety he will have when he gets out. I hope he doesn't go back 💜
NCG I think it only works on those that needed to be there. In my opinion I feel some people need to die. And some need to be put in jail. Example ones that murder more then 4 people depending on there reasons. Should die. Child rape same deal no reason just dead. Child molesters that never actually did anything jail while taking lessons to uncover why this urge hits then ship them off the bangkok and give them about $350 every 2 weeks for 3 months and forget all about them.

The prison system punishes those who have committed a crime. However, the incarcerated time should include compulsory rehabilitative processes. This doesn't mean behavorial tuition but rather work and classrooms that teach and distract the prisoners from destructive thinking and add to their skillset and make their minds better from the lowly depths they may have been in before. Simple examples include carpentry / religious teachings/ languages etc. High risk individuals can be instructed online and distanced from actual tools or equipment.

@Jacob Stahl none of us know what his crime was (EDIT: murder.) The punishment should be proportional to the crime; if the measure is an eye for an eye, just kill the guy and get it over with, solitary confinement is torture.
@Jacob Stahl it doesn't matter who he killed he is still a human being what they are doing is no better so what makes it right for the ones in power.. Just because they say so? One crime doesn't justify another and yeah this is a crime of inhumane

@James Alexandros It's human nature, and also every other species in the world's nature, to want to "stay with their own," hence why people tend to form groups. Asking for people to live in a utopia where there are no groups is just unnatural and would never be achieved, because it will always end up failing, one way or another.

In my country he would learn a decent profession while in jail and after a few years he would be a free man again, having a home and a job, and some folks taking care of him. The last ten years, we closed half our prisons, because of running out of criminals in our country.
Isolation is torture, and it created more crime. It's an easy short term solution with disastrous consequences in the long run.
An eye for an eye.
Wazz sure, if the prisoners are destined to spend the rest of their life in prison, but if you want them to integrate back into society at some point, solitary is going to make that impossible.
English Cloud Inviting the criminals to your home will not be tortures
Moey 2moey It's not as simple as throwing someone into solitary confinement and saying "fuck them." Most of the people who aren't there for life have families, kids, or lovers to go back to. That degree of solitude can drive someone crazy, and possibly make them even worse than when they came in, which is be detrimental to the society if all these people go mad and are released.
The whole prison system doesn't work efficiently. In the US after coming out of prison people are very likely to commit another crime, because they have no other choice. Nobody wants these people to work for them etc. I think prison should show the people what they did wrong and make them realise the consequences, not just put them in a box for many many years.

if you close the game and then enter again, the textures will not have time to load and you can run through the wall

It only works when you play offline.

if it was me i would just lie down and sleep.
Same dude. I have already developed a skill to sleep for 15 hours straight. Just sleep, workout, sleep.
Somewhat hard to sleep on that floor but it’ll do
LMAO. You need sunlight to align your circadian rhythm and sleep restfully. After awhile, sleep would become "closing your eyes to ignore the hell you're in".
Not that easy wen people wanna hurt you
Its not that ez
In denmark, high security prisons are more like high luxury hotels and their crime rate reduced 75% so maybe we should be focusing more on rehabilitation and reintegration ..
*me being antisocial and staying at my house all summer*
Pretty much
You have internet and other freedom inside your house which this guy doesn’t
You still have freedom to do as you please when you please, how you please. This man is on someone else’s time, someone else’s home, and does things when he is told or how he is told to
Goth boy Clique same
Pxsseiidon lmao probably what went through his head for a while
If he ever gets out he'll be even worse than what put him there
Joeys Father that’s why they should shoot his sorry ass with a 27 cent bullet and be done with him.
primate4

@@primate4 you're like 7 gtfo
@@primate4 i think calling you a primate is a compliment
Mickey G
People go to prison for jay walking?
Do you have a positive environment in your home? Embrace it. 90 minutes of isolation felt like years inside this prison for him.
The thing is you're treated like an animal and then you are expected to become civil afterwards. Doesn't even make sense. Jail is supposed to rehabilate you to become a productive member of society. The system is failing society
