Unedited: Footage from Pelican Bay Secure Housing Unit Yard

  • Today in Sacramento lawmakers are delving into a growing national controversy over special security units that are used to isolate thousands of inmates from the regular prison population. Civil rights groups say long-term isolation amounts to torture while state corrections officials say the units are necessary and the conditions are humane.
Around the state there are four of these facilities, which are known as Security Housing Units. The most controversial is at Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City.
At the heart of the debate: conditions in the units (many inmates are held in windowless cells and have been denied everything from calendars and sweatpants to phone calls); criteria that determine which prisoners are placed there and how they get out; and the lengthy terms some inmates spend in the facilities.
More than 500 California prisoners have been locked in the special units for 10 years or longer, according to state data. Of those people, 78 prisoners have been held inside for more than 20 years.
Over the years, authorities have allowed media into Pelican Bay's Security Housing Unit, but access has been limited and the inmates carefully selected by staff.
However, top corrections officials granted unusual access to a team of reporters and videographers from the Center for Investigative Reporting and KQED. We visited all areas of Pelican Bay's Security Housing Unit except for a section housing leaders of a 2011 hunger strike.
Using a small camera mounted to a wall, our team was able to record Beasley exercising with a rubber handball in the small concrete pen (prison staff only began allowing the balls last year). At all other times--day and night-he is held in his cell alone. While skylights allow filtered sunlight into the units, there are no windows.

It's been proven over and over again that solitary confinement only makes an inmate worse, and more violent. As the warden of Maine State Prison said recently "You want to confine then by themselves, fine, but I don't want to live across the street from them when they get out". Take a sane individual, and within a couple months he'll be throwing his own shit on the walls, and then release a fucking monster back into society, happens 1000 times every day, and people wonder why they re-offend.

These are all animals who have earned their way to SHU by being violent, manipulative and completely unmanageable. Are the conditions harsh, yes. But spend a little time around these shit heads and you'll think their conditions aren't harsh enough.

I pray god gives this man the strength to stay sane . I'm all for punishment like this man I committed a crime and had to pay but the treatment we receive scars us for life . I paroled in 1998 and never have gone back SO for those people who say there is no such thing as rehabilitating YOU CAN KISS MY ASS I'm living proof that people can change IF giving

I mean, for real. Put a guitar or a piano in that room and at least conduct some worthwhile studies on how good a human can learn something proficiently without any one instructing them. I think that'd help all of us in some sense - them included. Give these guys something therapeutic to do if you're going to be releasing them on to the streets again. They'll at least come out in to society with a skill at something and a hobby that keeps them busy doing something constructive.

I love how everyone acts like "they" know what it takes to end up there... How about doing some research on overturned cases after people have done twenty years or more( or less) for crimes they did not commit. Pretty staggering numbers. Also think about what you have done in your own lives which could be deemed illegal, and punishable by law. And to those who have been fortunate enough to have never been tangled in our fucked up judicial system I hope you never are... It's a nightmare, I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Not wise, or dignified, to make judgments on something you have absolutely no understanding of... Just reveals the true arrogance of our society, which, I feel, is the core of all our problems, as a nation, to begin with... Take the blinders off, see who the real criminals are.

Some of these people are so ignorant. You hear the word Shu, and you automatically think rape or murder etc, that’s understandable, but a lot of time prisoners end up in the shu like this just for being inmates who are hard to deal with. Such as constant cell extracts, assaulting guard or inmates. Basically being a pain in the ass for maximum so they upgrade you to supermax.

What I'm saying is, is that prison should be a place for rehabilitation, not exclusion. If staff act in animalistic ways which they often do, you can hardly expect a hardened criminal who has never taken shit from anybody (and in some cases and quite often, that's completely understandable considering these peoples backgrounds) to lie down and roll over when a person who is suppose to be upholding "the law" is doing what he or someone that harmed him did in the past.

You cant rehabilitate some violent felons. This type of punishment fits crimes of extreme violence perfectly. Rape and kill a 7 year old girl or torture to death an innocent homeowner during a burglary deserves a desolate life until death with no hope of parole. Punish more and stop asking whether evil people are worth rehabilitating.

He was released after a little over a year because of all the protests. The people in power wanted to hide his existence and have him 'broken.

Cont. If an inmate once sent to State prison starts programming and not getting into trouble, there will be no issues, and he will likely get out early for good behavior. If he starts murdering, raping and assaulting people once locked up, he has to be put out of circulation for the safety of other inmates who wish to do time peacefully. As far as my argument being weak, I've stated facts and the way it is behind bars, if you choose not to believe that's on you.

And yet, some of the most violent criminals may never be releasable into society again. You both have unique situations so I thought I'd ask.

Solitary confinement means they are housed alone without a cellmate. In SHU housing units if the inmate is double cell cleared they will have a cellmate, many in the SHU units constantly refuse a cellmate by their own choice. The video incorrectly portrays SHU units as "solitary confinement" which is simply not true.

Essentially the bottom line of what I am saying is, is that this system is broken and needs to change. It's practically been the same system that's been employed for thousands of years and so far it's given no indication of a high success rate in reconciling the "criminals" with themselves or society. If anything, its perpetuated criminal activities and not hindered them. Often times you find criminals from all walks of life have experienced some traumatic experience themselves in the past.

If that was me I’d pretty much be dead within days. It would not be possible to spend 20+ in that box 💯

what has this guy done to wind up in this place?

yes i do, his work ethic is exemplary, but unfortunately its probably also the cause for his extremely high blood pressue and type 2 diabetes so it doesn't come without it costs in health. He would leave home at 7:50 for work stay till about 8/8:30 at night (despite him only being required to be present till 5pm), he'd come home, eat dinner and then work solidly every night till the early hours of the morning usually finishing up between 3 am and 5 am.

you have to understand i gave the number as a rough figure, its complete stupidity to expect that a human being works those hours down to the last second everyday of the year but generally that was/is the life he currently leads.

People have choices to make. If they are incarcerated in GP, they know that if they run with a prison gang, or seriously assault or kill someone while incarcerated they will get a SHU term. And FYI, these aren't "solitary confinement" conditions. Many of these inmates refuse to have a cellmate once they get to the SHU. It's all about choices.

No wonder they go on hunger strike!

Let's see....by viciously assaulting/murdering staff in prison, murdering other inmates, shot calling as a prison gang leader and having people murdered on the streets. Many of these inmates have been continuous program failures on the mainline and wind up here. BTW, these inmates aren't in "solitary confinement" as the video suggest, rather many of these inmates refuse to take cellmates. These inmates know the rules, and are responsible for their own actions, earning their place there.

Thanks Draicula, my ex has since been released from the SHU and we're no longer together but it's still cruel & inhumane.
