Odd. I've worn a pocket-clip folding knife for around 30 years, various makes and clip designs, and never once had one eating my pocket the way your pants are showing. Perhaps it's a difference in environment - I was a city/desk worker all my life, didn't have a chance to spend large amounts of time working outdoors, so maybe that makes a difference. I carry a Swiss army knife on a homemade clip made out of a large cotter pin and a fishing clip. It works great. I have it where it fits loose enough to slide over the denim easily. If you still have a problem with clips wearing out the top of the pocket, I would think the best course of action would be to whip stitch the area where the clip normally lies on new pairs of jeans and then replace the whipping if it wears out so that the denim under it would never wear out.

Being a pocket knife carrier for 50 years I noticed recently a big trend in smaller straight blades. From the street as well as what's being made available. Tried it, love it!
Idk if this is interesting or relevant in any way, but as someone who lives in a country with strict knife laws where the law is really vague around it on top of that (its one of those "you have to have a sufficient reason but we will never tell you what we consider a good enough reason), this is a problem ive tangled with for quite a long time. SAKs and similar multitools have gotten a bit of a free pass for a long time since they are generally considered very un-threatening and the general public just considers them a tool, but any dedicated and/or "scary looking" knife is just not something you want to be caught in public with. So the obvious answer have been small folders with pocket clips, such as a Delica. I havent ruined my pants, but the moment I clip a Delica and a tiny edc flashlight in my pocket, I just cannot fit my hand down that pocket to retrieve anything from the bottom anymore. Fixed blades are out of the question for anything outside my own property or in the woods/worksite etc because of said laws. Ive also tried what you said of just taking off the clip, but after having one of my knuckles snipped off from a Hogue Deka with a bad detent I dont wanna do that anymore either. So I have come to 2 solutions that actually work out well for me. One is making a custom swiss army knife with a spyderco blade in it and whatever tools I actually want, which is a good compromise imo. The other is to simply wear work pants, if you wear work pants with those carpenter pockets and padded knees etc, noone bats an eye if theres a knife hanging off you 😂 Oh and I dont know if you remember but I commented about the insane price of the Buck 110 where I live? I just checked the Izula and the 1095HC version is 170 bucks. Yay me.
I almost lost a pocket clip knife once, kneeled down to pick something up off the floor. As I stood up I noticed my knife clipped onto a knitted blanket. After that, I always carry knife inside my pocket, especially aware of the expensive ones.
I got tired of shredding pockets too and just put a slip joint knife in my pocket instead. If I’m using a knife outdoors I’ll grab whatever knife is suitable but for constant carry a medium sized slip joint is fine.
I have used kershaws wave release for a decade with no issues even in gym short or slacks. I have to adapt my pull out technique a little but no significant wear on pockets.

@knifetimestory I haven't seen any comments here agreeing that this is a problem... You must be doing something wrong by carrying a knife or pocketknife and it's destroying your pants. Even with cheaper jeans, like the ones I use for heavy work, I've never had one of them fray in the pocket... I usually lose at least 2 pairs of pants when I'm on a heavy job, mainly on the legs and thighs, but I've never had one of them damaged in the waistband of the pocket... I really don't understand how that could be possible... I'm not the type of guy who could be said to be the most delicate, on the contrary, I weigh around 100 kg (220 pounds) and I'm a little over 1.8 m (6 feet) tall. I'm not fat... Thanks. Now I’m going to binge watch a bunch of your videos in Idaho where I can carry any damn thing I want anywhere I want. 👍🏻🇺🇸 Edit: Almost anywhere except the courthouse.
@@knifetimestory Sorry, I mean , you certainly use a clip with the sheath for your fixed blade. Does it wear out your pocket? If not I'll take your advice. Sorry for my bad english but I'm just a little french guy !!!
Never had a problem with the clips wrecking my pockets. I like pocket clips for the convenience but think they are uncomfortable when using the knife for longer tasks. When I am working outside I will carry a fixed blade or a folder without a pocket clip in a sheath.
So a wire clip is probably ur best option on a smooth in and out of the pocket, pocket clip. Many knives offer wire clip options I can recommend many if need be, but imho they don’t wear out ur pants nearly as bad or fast as a bent clip or titanium clip.
The Cold Steel Luzon has a nice fat and wide clip made out of the handle material so it’s not a tight metal clip. It’s what I use for work and it doesn’t shred my jeans at all.
Yeah of the same opinion. I still own folding knives (the still have their place) but will 8/10 times carry a fixed blade along with a SAK. I mostly carry BRK as well, but in CA I have to open carry a big fixed blade. So it's a little different for me, as I carry a folder when I don't want people to see a big blade on my hip.
Hey, I agree, but I found a simple solution to the problem. I dont carry it using a pocket clip, but with a paracort at my belt. This means the knife is hanging down from my belt into the pocket. This way I dont even realize I have my victorinox swisschamp with me, but when I need it, it is right in my pocket 😊
That's a clever solution! Using a paracord for easy access is a great way to keep your SwissChamp handy without it being in the way. Thanks for sharing your method!
Lovely knives Tom. Glad you've been able to find good Barkies. Are they much cheaper used down there? They're extremely pricey up here, and that plus the risk of QC crappolla make them undesirable, and there's not many used for sale in my neck o' the woods.... My jeans be like dat, too. Yo.
Thanks Jeff. I got cocky and bought another Barkie and wouldn't you know it, it had a burned edge towards the tip. So. After 10 minutes of gentle grinding and reprofiling, the knife looks perfect. I'll feature that knife in a video, just to keep BRK honest and show off the real reason I bought it...the custom sheath!!! Stay Warm my friend!!!
This is just my nervous habit of constantly taking the knife out, opening and closing it a couple times, every hour or so, over the last 25 years. But...I may try your idea if I decide to start carrying clip knives in any newer jeans.
How/why does a pocket clip knife cause such a problem? Knife in or out of the pocket? I've been wearing knife "in" for decades and not one pair of pants has worn out the pocket before other wear made them unwearable. If the knife is too big to be clipped "in" the pocket then it probably would be too big for comfort while sitting in my office chair. So my "pocket" knife is smaller, and I have a large folder in the desk drawer, in the truck, in the night stand, down in the basement, and etc. for when bigger is needed. And did you say a knife on your hip is illegal? On private property? You need a new state. One day I was out working and needed to make a quick run to the gas station (about 2 miles round trip) to fill up the gas cans. It wasn't until long after I was back at work when the .357 on my hip snagged on a branch and I realized I had forgot to remove it before my errand. (Normally I feel "concealed" around town makes me less of a target should someone of ill intent happen to be in the vicinity.)
No, no no. That knife is LEGAL. Maybe I spoke too quickly, or you were listening to slowly.😂. Also… That kind of pocket wear is the result of 25 years of constantly playing with the knife that’s in my pocket. In and out in and out in and out and using the knife as a fidget toy rough estimate… 25 times a day. That creates a lot of wear and tear over the years.
😂 Thanks for noticing. Those are my outside work/saunter into the woods glasses. I promise I have a pristine pair for all the other times. Forgot to change for the video.
Clips destroy pants, leather chairs, vehicle finishes, doors, etc.... And it interferes with pocket carry of a revolver. Done with clips. I wear carpenter jeans and the tool pocket is perfect for my Spyderco.
A friend of mine "lost" his Kershaw years ago. I went to his house and immediately found the knife, clipped quite precariously to the inside liner of his coat hanging on a coat rack. Clips are good and bad.
Nope. You are misinformed. Watch this and then tell me what you think. But watch it first. I won't debate the issue. ruclips.net/video/A1407hA1Beo/видео.html
Not legal to even carry a lock knife here without VERY very good reason...and a fixed blade, almost zero chance. How about wearing the pocket clip knives clipped into a very thin IWB kydex or similar belt loop or some other gizmo? Something stronger than fabric, but slim enough to not damage the clip? Should be possible. Think of the Yaqui (?) belt slide holster, or one of the Chic Gaylord minimalist rigs....
Easy solution….you can trim down a plastic shirt pocket protector and use it in your pants pocket. Just use a little excess tape from the bridge repair you did on your glasses to seal the edge you had to trim and voila! No more sad pants!
Well, I've been using carrying and working with knives for over 50 years and NONE of my pants get like this. Here's a hint SON. Adjust your pocket clip accordingly when you first receive it. There. You are welcome. 😁😁😁
It looks like many of those pants need to be displayed on your Smithsonian selves with retired pocket clip knives. That pocket wear almost looks like habitual tic, at least it’s a respectable one. I mean it could have been from scratching your nether regions...lol
I don’t know how you all destroy your pants. I carry a pocket clip knife every day, and have for at least 3 decades. I very very rarely ever see any wear on my pocket. The pants wear out in many other areas long before I ever see anything on my pockets. Maybe it’s the quality of pants or the fit, I’m not sure but there has to be another reason.
Ive carried pocket clip knives for 40 years every day and when Im at work that knife is removed a dozen times a day. And No problems at all. Sounds like your knives clips are way to tight or your pants are cheap material.
Knife laws are just freaking stupid. I quit carrying pocket clip knives because I lose them. I carry a knife in my pocket always and usually one on my belt if I’m working. I have large hands and I think I was probably pulling the knives part way out of my pocket when just going after my wallet or what not then they would fall out later on.
I totally understand your frustration with knife laws! It can be challenging to navigate them, especially when you're just trying to carry a useful tool.
That is actually a crack and those are my work out in the yard/hiking/safety glasses that I forgot to switch out before the video. I’ve actually gotten so used to that crack and it’s in such a place that it really is never even noticeable. But thank you for your concern.
If you need proof that knife laws are BS, simply compare laws in NY vs. Oregon. In Oregon, the knife must NOT be concealed, especially in regards to "automatic" knives (which I believe are entirely illegal in NY for no good reason) and fixed blades. In fact, in Oregon, there are very few limits on fixed blades as long as they are clearly visible - exactly the opposite of NY. Go figure.
In all fairness, it’s not the knife, it’s the jeans. Carhartt clothing is absolute garbage. Especially the new stretchy stuff. They haven’t made anything decent in two decades.
LI. I've been there and well, I'll admit I was in the western part and basically they are all NYC people who can't afford NYC. Perhaps the easter part is better. Used to be all farmland out there. Upstate is the part that should secede from the NY and form a new state. We get hammered tax-wise for NYC BS. And...we provide them with all their water. How about calling it North New York and then charging NYC for all the water and electricity it uses.
@@knifetimestory Yes Nassau County, the county closest to Queens(NYC) has many people from the City but they vote Republican as they have seen high property taxes, along with high electric rates too. Suffolk county has boomed in people not wanting the colder temps of Upstate, and they also vote Republican & most Dems are conserative in actions. The farmers are being pushed out and no one is on board with Gov "Huckleberry" plan for heating pumps and no fireplaces, or no gas stoves. The NYS gun laws don't favor law abiding citizens and NY is too lax on prosecuting crime in the "blue" cities. The DA's in the 2 LI Counties have been voted in to try to clean up the Gov's mess.
👍 Another excellent video with a remarkably good alternative to folding knives with pocket clips. The plain simple truth is that pocket clips belong on pens & pencils, they do not belong on knives.
Nope. Be careful what you say and how you interpret the law. The law is actually "four inches or longer" not as you say "longer than four inches". May seem trivial, but as far as the law is concerned, there is a huge difference. Watch this video, I make it crystal effing clear: ruclips.net/video/A1407hA1Beo/видео.html

Thanks. Now I’m going to binge watch a bunch of your videos in Idaho where I can carry any damn thing I want anywhere I want. 👍🏻🇺🇸 Edit: Almost anywhere except the courthouse.
Binge away my friend. Thank you!!!
Man... Even here in CA many people at the bar wear fixed blades on their hips... But im in the sierra Nevada mountains.
Sort of like NYC and Upstate NY. Same laws, different mindset and values.
The Sheath for your fixed blade doesn't ruin your pocket?
Huh?
@@knifetimestory Sorry, I mean , you certainly use a clip with the sheath for your fixed blade. Does it wear out your pocket? If not I'll take your advice. Sorry for my bad english but I'm just a little french guy !!!
@@drkpg1 - I believe the Bark River sheath attaches to the belt, not the pocket. Not sure about the Izula sheath.
I've found that coins get stuck in between the scales on the back of the knife and dulls the edge of the blade.
Easy fix. Do what I do, don't carry change in that pocket.
I think the clips that look like a big paper clip are easier on the pants than the other ones. :)
You’re right! They do seem to work better!
Never had a problem with the clips wrecking my pockets. I like pocket clips for the convenience but think they are uncomfortable when using the knife for longer tasks. When I am working outside I will carry a fixed blade or a folder without a pocket clip in a sheath.
It's really my fault for constantly fidgeting with the knife and taking it out of my pocket.
@@knifetimestory well one advantage to a folder is the fidget factor
That is for sure!!
So a wire clip is probably ur best option on a smooth in and out of the pocket, pocket clip. Many knives offer wire clip options I can recommend many if need be, but imho they don’t wear out ur pants nearly as bad or fast as a bent clip or titanium clip.
That's a great idea. Wire clips are the best.
"So, that ship has sailed. " ... lol kudu's :) .. still loving the humour :D :D
Thank you as always!!
I’m still using my Buck 110 folding Hunter that I bought in 1972.
That's awesome! The Buck 110 is a classic and it’s great to hear it's still serving you well after all these years!
I always carry a clip-on knife and don't have any issues with the pockets being destroyed.
Glad to hear it.
The Cold Steel Luzon has a nice fat and wide clip made out of the handle material so it’s not a tight metal clip. It’s what I use for work and it doesn’t shred my jeans at all.
Thanks for sharing that. Good info.
Good Thinking!
I always put a shim on my pocket clip to loosen it enough so it still hold het doesnt wipe out your pocket
Try carrying it inside waist band i have been carrying this was for 38 years
In California we aren't allowed to carry fixed blades😢😢
Wow!
I'm so sorry...that you live in NY. JK (no, I"m not). Anyway, have a great Thanksgiving, a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year sir.
YOUR sorry. How do you think I feel!
Happy Thanksgiving to you as well and a Merry Christmas!!
Thanks. Oh, spend some money on your glasses and replace the right lens before it breaks more on damages your eye. Safety first.
You’ve hit the nail on the head.
subbed fellow upstater and liked the new studio lol.
Glad you liked the new studio!!! Thanks for watching.
I never believed being told that pocket clips would cause you to lose you knife until it almost happened to me. Now I just take em off.
A friend of mine "lost" his Kershaw years ago. I went to his house and immediately found the knife, clipped quite precariously to the inside liner of his coat hanging on a coat rack. Clips are good and bad.
That pocket clip thing is NYC not NYS...
Autos/Balis aside, knife laws here are kinda reasonable IMO, especially by NY standards.
Nope. You are misinformed. Watch this and then tell me what you think. But watch it first. I won't debate the issue.
ruclips.net/video/A1407hA1Beo/видео.html
You should always carry fixed blade been doing this for 38 years
I still use my good old Buck 110 (high quality JAPANESE) replica, it functions flawlessly.
No replicas!!! Get the real deal!!!
I normally wear bdus & keep my clip knife in the back pocket
I live in the free state of Florida. We don't worry about laws
@@terrysmith4465 yall worry about them hurricanes though. :(
@Richard-yi3us It's worth it
I can see that.
I occasionally carry a fixed blade, but do not share your experience with pocket knives. My pockets are holding up.
Watch my follow-up and you'll understand why my pants may be wearing faster than the average guy!
ruclips.net/video/ur1_lPY_hks/видео.html
Not legal to even carry a lock knife here without VERY very good reason...and a fixed blade, almost zero chance.
How about wearing the pocket clip knives clipped into a very thin IWB kydex or similar belt loop or some other gizmo? Something stronger than fabric, but slim enough to not damage the clip? Should be possible. Think of the Yaqui (?) belt slide holster, or one of the Chic Gaylord minimalist rigs....
Some good ideas. Thank you.
I solved my pocket clip problems years ago. I simply take them off. I have always hated pocket clips
Not sure what you mean. You simply take off your pants? :-)
Easy solution….you can trim down a plastic shirt pocket protector and use it in your pants pocket. Just use a little excess tape from the bridge repair you did on your glasses to seal the edge you had to trim and voila! No more sad pants!
Thanks. Maybe I’ll have to try that!
That is a problem with clip knives for sure. That part of the right pocket gets torn up before the pants are worn out and ready to be thrown away.
Totally feel you on that! It's so annoying when your pants give up before you do.
Well, I've been using carrying and working with knives for over 50 years and NONE of my pants get like this.
Here's a hint SON. Adjust your pocket clip accordingly when you first receive it.
There. You are welcome. 😁😁😁
Thanks Dad.
@knifetimestory 😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing 😊
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
It looks like many of those pants need to be displayed on your Smithsonian selves with retired pocket clip knives. That pocket wear almost looks like habitual tic, at least it’s a respectable one. I mean it could have been from scratching your nether regions...lol
20+ year old jeans with thousands of necessary and unnecessary (fidget) removals and insertions. No scratching!!!😂
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
or....use a smal gas burner and bend the clip to the right strenght , but dissasamble it !
Carhartt. Patch can be seen in the thumbnail. That's about 25 years of lots of in and out and washings.
A knife with a clip takes up room in my pocket, and my hand doesn’t fit
I totally understand! Sometimes, the design can be a bit awkward.
i prefer to carry folding knives in belt sheaths, even if they have a clip
Leaving the clip in the 940 actually is not a bad idea. Gives me something else to hold onto. Otherwise that knife can get kinda thin.
Hoping that your eye problem is resolving.
Thank you. I appreciate that.
Ive carried pocket clip knives for 40 years every day and when Im at work that knife is removed a dozen times a day. And No problems at all. Sounds like your knives clips are way to tight or your pants are cheap material.
Maybe it's the fidgeting, I'm guilty of that.
NYC is a disappointing failure.
@ ahh useful tool. My wife’s pet name for me 😂
Great Video and discussion. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
Thanks, I appreciate it. Peace back at ya!!
Doesn't the mega scratch in your glasses bother you more? :))))
That is actually a crack and those are my work out in the yard/hiking/safety glasses that I forgot to switch out before the video. I’ve actually gotten so used to that crack and it’s in such a place that it really is never even noticeable. But thank you for your concern.
@@knifetimestory :)
Well pronounced...
I-zula = E-zula 👌
Thank you. I was hoping someone would let me know I finally said it correctly.
@knifetimestory 😁👌
Go figure.
Autos are not illegal in NY.
@knifetimestory that's good to know. Do you know what type of restrictions are placed on them in NY?
Not sure what you mean by restrictions. You should watch my video about knife laws. It pretty much makes it all crystal clear.
Spyderco for forty s years no problem. 5:
In all fairness, it’s not the knife, it’s the jeans. Carhartt clothing is absolute garbage. Especially the new stretchy stuff. They haven’t made anything decent in two decades.
The jeans are almost 25 years old. I would’ve thought they’ve been from back when they made good jeans.
Good video. zane
Thank you Zane. Hey, check your email!!
The NY State knife laws are just another reason for Long Island to leave and form their own State
I couldn’t agree more.
Agreed.
Using a knife with a clip is irritating. The clip most often creates a hot spot.
Remove clip, carry deep in pocket or from a belt sheath.
Why? Bend the clip out. That's on you.
Wow. That is genius.
Beware of those Free Range Karen’s.
Excellent line. I believe I may use that someday...with your permission.
@knifetimestory Abso-freakin-lutly!
Just a heads up the younguns pay hundreds of dollars to get a pair of pants 👖 all worn out like your are. 💵💵💵💵💵💵🤑
Great to know. Thanks.
😂😂 cheap
Straight from the Google - It's illegal to carry a knife with a blade longer than four inches, whether it's concealed or not.
Google ?
I put less thought into Google than i do my toilet paper . . . ☆
@ But you use them both.
Where is that illegal?
@ NYC
Nope. Be careful what you say and how you interpret the law. The law is actually "four inches or longer" not as you say "longer than four inches". May seem trivial, but as far as the law is concerned, there is a huge difference.
Watch this video, I make it crystal effing clear:
ruclips.net/video/A1407hA1Beo/видео.html
Correct! I would want to see a sheath or clip if I were law enforcement! Husband just puts giant knife in pocket! Not much sense but that's NYC
Nothing in NY makes sense.
