Roughly speaking, there are two modes of inquiry into the most important questions we can ask about ourselves. The first, we might describe as the ancient approach, is to ask, what is a human person and what best produces the flourishing of the human person?
This approach treats this question as both an internal and external one. Internal because we are human beings ourselves, and so we can look at our own personal experiences to inform the answer, but also because there are other human beings external to myself who can give us more perspective than only one person can.
The other approach, which we could call the modern approach, asks, what brings the fulfillment of the self? What will bring me satisfaction? The inquiry in this case is not external, but merely internal.
We look at everything through the lens of the subjective rather than the objective. We want to find ways for my appetite, my desires, my beliefs, and my dreams and ambitions to find satisfaction.
For me, there’s a simple way of contrasting these two sensibilities. Ask yourself what is more noble and good - the flourishing or fulfillment of an individual person or the flourishing and fulfillment of a community of individuals?
If you say it’s better that many should flourish, then our exploration for how to encourage that outcome should be an exploration of what is common and shared. It should examine humanity and the human person rather than just the isolated selfish individual perspective.
The modern world frames this question as something personal - to each his own. You do you. You speak your truth. These are the trademarks relativism and subjectivism.
But if we can all agree that it’s better for many to thrive than for only one to thrive, then we necessarily have to expand our inquiry to consider what is common to all of us - it assumes that there is something objective that informs our inquiry about ourselves and about reality.
And this is what the ancient world did. It sought to understand the human person. What is a human person, what is our purpose, what leads to our flourishing and fulfillment? Notice that all of these questions are inclusive of the many.
Whereas, the modern world says, what is my purpose, what is my perspective, what is my truth, and how do I find my own personal fulfillment.
And if we get off track and our dysfunctions become too much to bear, what do we do? We seek psychological therapy where the focus is again, on the self. We spend hours talking about ourselves. Not about ethics, not about spiritual fulfillment, not about anything objective or external, only internal and subjective.

Last comment: the LGBTQ+ community was formed because they suffered legal and social marginalization, and were discriminated against in housing and employment (among other things). If they were not subjugated in the ways they historically have been, there would be no need for an LBGTQ+ community because they would be fully integrated into their local communities. Please read some history on this if you haven't already, the idea that LGBTQ+ people only band together to be horny is blatantly false. A lot of words that you use to diminish me and others as a human being. That's because you treat my sexuality as mere passion, which is a cheap rhetorical device. In my case, as a kid, I had a sense that I was different from many of my peers, but it was years before there was even a sexual component. Later as I got older, there was indeed a sexual aspect to my attraction to other males, but it wasn't the whole thing. I didn't marry my husband because of sex, I married him because I love him, he loves me, and we want to participate in the many rights and responsibilities that come with being married.

Yea, the more sugar you consume, the more you want, and the more you'll need. If you lack temperance and decision making, and are lead by instinct, the hunger will only grow. I've had to deal with a warped sexuality since I was a kid. One of the biggest revelations I had was that my attractions didn't define me. The lower faculties don't make me who I am. It is my intellect and the choices I make which matters the most. If I want to truly be free, I have to tame the passions in me and follow the law completely. The way I see it, subjectivity and pleasure are prisons where one becomes a slave to an existence defined by exponential consumption. Becoming more and more blind by their hunger and sin. The temperance and wisdom of truth is the only thing which can bring you lasting order and peace. That is an existence serving God and submitting to his eternal edicts, which by design, fulfill you and bring you closer to him.

I appreciate that you are trying to sound compassionate and objective in this video. And I also agree that simple sexual urges and impulses are not necessarily positive things to be indulged but can be negative and dehumanizing. But when it comes to same sex attraction, there's a difference between a heterosexual person who is simply indulging their sexual impulses with somebody of the same sex, and someone who is truly homosexual seeking a romantic, committed relationship. Whatever your position on Church teaching, whether you agree with the church's teaching on homosexuality or you disagree with it, there has to be a distinction between a person who would just as soon gratify themselves with anything or anyone available and someone who is mentally, emotionally, and biologically programmed towards romantic relationship with the same gender. Yes, truly LGBTQ people are fairly rare in the big scheme of the global population, but it doesn't mean that we should reduce them and their orientation to simple cravings to be controlled just because it's not how WE were created.

Addiction is not a moral failure because for people like me, the will can be hijacked by a complicated bio-psycho-social response that is way beyond the scope of your ideas here. Addiction requires a spiritual response, but not because people choose to be chemically dependent. Recovering addicts have other things in common, like humility, so you might try hanging out with some of us sometime. I know you think you speak for everyone, life really just isn't that simple. And since your world view on addiction seems quite limited, I would have to infer that it has its limits in this area as well.

(reply to the section about sex) You're misrepresenting sexual education. 'they teach you not to control your appetite?' Comprehensive sex education teaches students about consent, one of the most important parts of intercourse. This is LITERALLY teaching people to control their desires in a productive and safe manner. This model is, ironically given your characterization of the modern model of inquiry, *more* cognizant of the need for a flourishing community than the old, abstinence-only, PIV only sex education curriculum, which arbitrarily suppresses certain human desires and has historically enabled such things as spousal r*p3, only made illegal in many US States in the past couple decades.

    • @danielviets4427

Emphasis on consent in education is not a means to control sexual appetite. Instead it’s if you want to (Aka if you consent) you can have sex. That’s different then saying to yourself “I want to have sex with this person, but I do not think it will be good for me so I am choosing not to.” Versus “I want to have sex with this person, therefore I consent and it’s good so long as they consent too.” In the videos he’s making the argument that there’s a higher level than just 2 people making an agreement.

It's about making sure people understand what sex is, what its consequences (good and bad) are, and how to do it it the safest way possible if one does choose to take part. Brian, and yourself, are being dishonest about what sex ed is by saying it encourages people to be recklessly h0rny. It doesn't, that's hormones. You can refuse to consent for ANY reason, regardless of the combination of passion, will, and intellect you use to decide. Sex education is perfectly compatible with Brian's basic moral prescriptions, but because he's lying about what it is, it rhetorically seems like it's incompatible. By arbitrarily shunning sex ed like he does, you're both implicitly condoning the increase in sexual assaults and r@p3s that will occur due to lack of knowledge about consent and lack of awareness for minors, even the abuse which occurs within the Church's power structure.

@@partydean17 Yeah there's a way forward for Brian here that builds on the current sociological consensus rather than contradicting it. I have a feeling the real reason he doesn't like comprehensive sex ed is because it teaches kids about more than just PIV sex, and educates them about other forms of intimacy as well as other sexualities.
Even given (I'm assuming, I could be wrong) his views on LGBTQ+ identities, I think it would be better to let the kids get educated about the facts and then tell them what's immoral afterwards. If he's confident that he's correct then he shouldn't have any problem with any facts about human behavior. If he has to rely on keeping kids hoodwinked about the existence of gay people or safe sex, it seems like there's something wrong.
On a related point, it's possible for sex ed to be somewhat 'propogandizing' in its apporach. In this case, however, it's an issue with the way sex ed is being done, not an issue with sex ed inherently. The solution in this case is to improve the program, not advocate for its removal.

I think you outlined this principle very clearly, but it feels as though you just scratched the surface of something much more complicated. Speaking as a same-sex attracted Catholic woman, I fully accept and understand the teaching of 'your desires should not govern your choices'. I know plenty of lesbian women who agree with this principle too.
But for us, that's irrelevant. It's a moot point. The key question, for us, is whether falling in love with a woman (and pursuing a romantic relationship with them) is wrong. If we're unable to find evidence (secular or otherwise) as to why it IS wrong, unhealthy, damaging for society etc. then why should we deny ourselves the joy of a loving relationship? I'm wondering if it is still a will & intellect answer as it is a question of one's desires not being rightly ordered according to the natural law (which is God's law of course)? Teleology addresses the question of what a 'thing' is ordered towards. Sex is primarily ordered towards procreation (& of course union- drawing the couple closer). Homosexual relations frustrate the teleology of sexual intercourse (obviously there is no possibility of conceiving a child by natural means without both sperm and egg present in the intercourse), and thus our will & intellect can deduce such physical relations are a wrong use of the natural physiology of man and woman.

Everyone is able to give their own perspective, but should also listen to the perspectives of others. This means that the modern model is less prone to the problems related to a single authority claiming to speak for a whole group, who can then speak over that group for their own personal gain. The additional collaborative dimension of the modern model allows for a more transparent dialogue to occur. However, one must 'read the comments' to see most of this dialogue occurring, so I wouldn't blame someone for not noticing that it's happening.

I don't pretend to have the answers and homosexually presents many problem for Christian sexual teaching is but it does make me uneasy in passing judgement on my brother's without ever having to walk in their shoes myself. Yes, homosexual people may not find sexual gratification, and it's hard, but that doesn't in any way remove value to their life. The value of a life the depends on virtue, not gratification.
Furthermore, we should also stop assuming that a homosexual person necessarily has to remain single and forget any degree of sexual gratification whatsoever. This is because a homosexual man CAN marry a woman. Nothing in the law of the Church forbids this. Of course the woman must know and accept the situation beforehand. Same if it's a lesbian woman with a straight man. Such marriages could be difficult, of course, but they can work. I saw one time on youtube a homosexual man who was married to a lesbian woman. 1. We already have internal governance of our sexuality. Most people that have fantasies that include legal or moral indiscretions don’t act on those fantasies.
    2. Conflating same sex relations as indulgent or feeding of ones insatiable appetite, but not granting the same of heterosexual relationships is subjective and bigoted towards same sex relationships, you’re still working on the framework that straight=good/normal/natural and gay=indulgent/bad/deviant even though hundreds of mammalian and non mammalian animals practice gay sex (if you’re not doing this and I just got that from the title then correct me)
    3. The logical conclusion of the argument that sex should be productive in a societal sense is that women should reproduce as much as possible. And if woman aren’t expected to reproduce as much as possible, what’s the problem with the minority of same sex relationships that do exist? If you DO think that women should value reproducing as much as possible there’s nothing I can say to argue with that other than: I don’t want to.

I thought this was the general consensus so im quite shocked to see the comments so surprised by this kind of a perspective.
But also we should consede that it is part of human nature to do thinks that are enjoyable and lustful, and i do not see a problem with that if enjoyed in moderation of course.

@@mannytps9986 our human nature is fallen, and every human being has to wrestle with that fact.
As Chesterton foresaw, we are living an age when sex is overrated. Every sin and flaw revolves around sex which seems to be the only thing worth living for or discussing, but heterosexual people, even catholic heterosexuals have to struggle with other sinful tendencies.
Are those tendencies the Will of God or the result of a flawed human Nature? And are those tendencies a curse or the opportunity to fight and deserve Salvation?

@@mannytps9986 How do you know what His will is on sexuality?
Homosexuality as we know it today wasn't practiced in stable relationships like it is today, so there's the intellect governing the passion.
All the bible talks about are incidents of rape, idolatry and a greek practice, where rich men had young boys (~12 y.o.) at home which in my opinion should be considered rape.
By that logic, how do you know that using a computer isn't sinful?
If you are referring to leviticus; turn back one page and it says you must not cut your hair.

@@clementphilippe6766 hey. First refer to the passage on cutting hair and let me see if you're in OR out of context. Next, assuming you're in context, that sounds like a ceremonial law, which was replaced with Jesus Laws of love (Paul on faith, not works of Moses). Yet, homosexual act was mentioned among other immoral sexual acts, as a member of the immoral sexual acts. Pretending I didn't say the aforementioned, cutting hair in the Bible doesn't cancel out the homosexual acts in the Bible. So saying, "here's something you don't know is here" doesn't invalidate another thing that we know is there.

The vedic religion has said that a culture obsessed with sex and food will be on it's knees #netflix. Basically we have two tongues (a lower and higher) that we need to have discipline, control or at least an awareness to evolve as a human race. Passion and desire come from the mind and the mind is fed by the oculus ie our eyes so what you see you become unless you generate self consciousness or an element of higher awareness.
