    Mate you're fucking spot on with the bit about high school. Being an angry little white teenager in the 2000s when this music was coming out, it like, spoke directly to your soul. This song gave words to how people going through Depression and Suicidal Ideations felt on a daily basis struggling with their mental health. Nowadays help is much more easily accessed, when this song came out, it wasn't as easy. People were told that they were just being dramatic or faking for attention, especially if they were younger. Many people still had the terrible idea that only "crazy" people went to therapy or took meds, so the landscape for mental health wasn't where it's at now. These misconceptions about mental illness still exist today, but not in the capacity they used to. Music like this gave a small sense of "I am understood, I am not alone" to those of us just trying to stay alive.

      I’ve listened to LINKIN PARK since I was a teen, and I continued to listen to them throughout their entire career. There’s certainly some albums I liked better than others. Chester passed away in 2017, and a few months later my wife passed away that year too. We were high school, sweethearts, and thinking back I had started listening to the band around the same year we got together. LINKIN PARK and also Mike Shinodas solo album, post traumatic, basically got me through the first couple years after she passed. One more light hits so hard for me. Which is kind of ironic because they were instrumental in helping me through my teen years too.

      @@Wittynametag why not? The bad wolves is an homage to the original as well as a continuation saying that the issues then are still prevalent now. I’m not saying it’s better than the original but it’s damn good.

    • @Wittynametag
      @Wittynametag 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@GreenSargent The original song is about generational sectarian conflict and terrorism that impacted the band and inspired by a real life event, the zombies are the hate filled unquestioning divided communities that murder children because of ideology and political differences that are said to represent the person who wrote the song, the song was a mixture of (at the time) modern alternative grunge rock the same year Kurt Cobain died and ends with a take on traditional Irish death keening singing.
      It's not a protest song it's a scream that ended up being an unofficial anthem of the peace process and means a lot to the people of NI, and is still disliked by the extremist factions that too this day hold the beliefs that the violence is justified.
      The Bad Wolves cover had none of that personality, it changes lyrics and changes the meaning, it's no longer a personal realisation of frustration but a generic war is bad song that was so none controversial it was in step with US foreign policy to wind down it's overseas actions, "since 1916" showed the stupidity of this is still on going, "in 2018" just dates it with every year since 2018, changing it from tanks, bombs, bombs, guns, to tanks, bombs, guns, drones it removes the criticism of all sides of a multi factional conflict and is just a list of military weapons.
      If those lyrics had been sung by an Afghan women using traditional Pashto singing styles with a hard rock sound then it might have worked, but otherwise it's like if Disturbed covered Fuck the Police and changing lyrics to talk when they got pulled over for drink driving, Sure sounds well polished and the guy can sing but its missing the point, the rawness and the feeling.
      They didn't even understand the original subject, with the singer saying it was about bombings during the "Irish rebellion" which about sums up the naivety and dislocation of US views on the troubles and the reality of the situation.
      Now maybe with her vocals on it, it would have become a much better song, but the absence just leaves a hole where the soul of the song should be, the fact they dedicated it to her and sent money to her kids is commendable, but that doesn't change the song to be anything more than a generic 2010s American rock cover in style that's been around for decades.

    • @lukegerhard
      @lukegerhard 5 месяцев назад +2

      @Wittynametag in the end, all music opinions are subjective so there will be some who think the cover version is better, and for them, it is. However, you make an unbelievably good argument for why that opinion is wrong. I personally liked the original even though I didn't fully grasp all the meaning behind it like you described. I'm an American with Irish ancestry for context.

    Chester Bennington is the lead singer. He is legendary for his vocal fry (screaming type of vocals). Mike Shinoda is the rapper/guitarist in the band. They have other songs where Mike sings/raps the verses and Chester sings the chorus. I think the best song to hear the extent of Chester's voice is Given Up (Live at Milton Keynes), and for Mike's rapping I'd recommend Bleed It Out (also the Live at Milton Keynes version). While Hybrid Theory album and Meteora albums have some great songs, I think these 2 are straight fire and wouldn't disappoint. Also, Mike Shinoda had a side group called Fort Minor, which was rap, and had a very popular song called "Remember The Name." I'd check that out. Finally, Linkin Park did a collab with Jay-Z. I've been to hundreds of concerts and Linkin Park remains one of the all-time best shows I've ever seen. I don't normally get bent out of shape by deaths of famous people, but Chester Bennington's death was a punch in the gut.

    Since you like Panic! At the Disco, try out Ice Nine Kills. Its obviously not a one to one, but Ice Nine Kills is theatrical like Panic! At the Disco, but gets really hard. Especially try them out if you like horror movies. The song I would recommend for a first listen is "Hip to Be Scared" by Ice Nine Kills.
    Although, I'm gonna be honest, if you do check them out, the music video for that song is too good to pass up.

    You are 1000% correct about some metal/hardcore fans acting elitist towards Linking Park. Years ago I saw a video of a guy standing outside an LP concert holding a sign and shouting “Linkin Park is a roller coaster!” And when people asked what he meant he said “it seems dangerous but is actually really safe and not real danger.”
    He was an asshat upset that people liked rock music that wasn’t hard enough for him. And I’m sure there are lots out there like him. I personally think LP was a great fusion of a few genres that allowed people to find the parts the liked and then move deeper into that genre.

    This is the band that got plenty of black kids into rock music in the early 2000s. Back when u basically had to hide that u liked any other type of music besides rap and rnb. They got solid albums their whole career, but must listens....hybrid theory, meteora, reanimation, fort minor, minutes to midnight, a thousand suns, and living things. After that I would say at least listen to one more light the song as that's the last track they had before the lead singer deleted himself. Out of all the music and genres I listen to this is the only band/act that I've paid to see more than once...and I come from mainly Atlanta/southern rap music as my daily listening since a kid.

    I think all kinds of people with different tastes in music enjoy Linkin Park because there is real shit and real pain behind that man's incredible vocals. Chester was molested and abused by his father when he was a child and he struggled with depression his whole life. Even if you don't know that, I think we can still subconsciously hear and feel that pain and frustration and we can relate to it, connect to it. It gives us an outlet for things we hold inside and don't express, things we've been through or struggled with. I have a similar history to Chester and for me, listening to his music wasn't an emo thing or even a rocker thing... it was an emotional release and relief.

    If you like this kind of merging of genres gotta do "Electric Callboy - Hypa Hypa", hard to describe a bit like Metallica meets EMD music, meets NYSYNC and they pretty much established their own brand of music called partycore. Really is undescribable, even if you don't react to it, your life will be better for having seen it!!

    Ok I am loving these reaction vids. Totally enjoying your reactions to these great songs! 2 suggestions for you. 1) Mudvayne- Fall into Sleep or Dig. Their greatest hits is on a loop for gym work outs, especially weight lift days. 2) Nine Inch Nails-Closer or lesser known Happiness in Slavery. There is a whole story to the EP this song is on and how it is basically Reznors F* you to his then record company. Dude is freaking brilliant.

    It's funny you mention DBZ, because in the early RUclips days, this is EXACTLY one of the tracks they used to use in big DBZ fight scenes.
    Also if you dig Hybrid Theory, in their follow-up, ReAnimation, they remix the entire Hybrid Theory album but have hiphop features and a few other guest stars but with a more electronic lean. This was the soundtrack to my Halo LAN parties.
