  • Dr. Greg Carr, head of Africana Studies at Howard University, discuss the importance of leaning on history and building on institutional memory. He also delivers a harsh critique of the play "Hamilton." We also talk about Broadway plays like "Arms Too Short to Box With God," Ralph Carter, Laurence Fishburne, Wesley Snipes and #Blade (the first #Marvel movie to make money), Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan and Black Panther. This is a smorgasbord! #InClasswithCarr #Hamilton #LinManuelMiranda #KarenHunter

So much Hamilton content, my historían heart is happy!! I’m so ready to learn on a Tuesday!! John Roberts defiantly uses his historical knowledge, we are in a larger cycle. The selective look at history is interesting in this musical. I do feel that there has to be scholarship that comes with working on Historical Musicals. I feel like there is always a risk we must take, but if we think about money we have to look at Broadway historically. Now is the time to use the star power that Hamilton has given actors and actresses to learn our history. The mixtape is so powerful, Dr. Carr always reminds me to use my whole historical brain. Immigration in time has changed, that meaning of us versus them idea. That Marvel conversation has just blown my mind. Thank you for more knowledge!!

I really appreciate this conversation. We were discussing Hamilton "at work" the Monday after it premiered on Disney Plus. And my boss was quick to ask me what I thought. First off, I had NO IDEA that this show was about Alexander Hamilton. Two, I had to watch with the subtitles in order to follow along. So when asked my opinion, I stated I was conflicted at best. Given our current climate, why was this even shown. Then I thought more about it. The big push was to let everyone know that it would debut on July 3rd. So it was released just in time for folks to watch as they "celebrated" the 4th of July. Although Dr. Carr introduced Frederick Douglas' 5th of July speech in to my awareness, watching this Hamilton foolishness was the impetus for to actually READ the speech.
I guess the show was supposed to be some sort of achievement for actors/actresses of color. But I wholeheartedly agree, this could have done with another subject matter.
Lastly, Dr. Carr always pays homage to his southern roots. But he ALWAYS has a Philadelphia reference...💕💕💕 Come on home, Dr. Carr, come on home.

Dr. Carr is an interesting man. I knew that August Wilson would only allow black directors to make movies out of his books. What I did not know was that Wesley wanted to do Black panther. This explains why the Blade series was trashed, and Wesley wound up in prison on trumped-up-charges (no pun intended.) Even the movie Hancock was to ridicule the very IDEA of a black superhero (hence no sequel.)

A majority black cast telling the story of America was unprecedented in 2015 and he crafted it for years. Black Panther was released in 2018. Obama's election was in 2009...all have moved us forward! There is an arrogance (ignorance) with present people that has us thinking 1) the world gave our ancestors different tools to work with, and 2) our understanding of life is deeper than theirs. Nope! Speaking to a 90-year old who was a former high-school teacher put white workplace attitudes in perspective for me. Knowing his experiences encompassed my experiences meant using his and my tools to undermine their sabotage. How could anyone think in the 21-c that s/he is the first to come up with a game plan to counter whasshole behaviour? That's reinventing the wheel when the manuals for making and managing the wheel can be found through research (talk and literature). We can add our experiences to theirs to make navigating North America easier for upcoming generations.

Michael...Raisin in the Son. He would ride the subway with His Elders staff back in the 80's i would see him on the Subway from BKNY To Harlem for M&A High and He would always speak to me; his postures and gate would glide with nobility as he navigated the quaking subway car. Lol

Sister Karen, as usual yourself and Dr. Carr bring it. One aspect that I think about the concept of black people playing roles of white people, now sets the precedent that they have been wanting to do all along. That is them playing roles of black people, but now not getting dragged, because as I said the precedent has been set
