RL Burnside doing his version of .44 blues that was written by Roosevelt Sykes. The videos not that great, just wanted to share the song since it's not on youtube.
fact! i myself pushed him very much, so that people would hear about him - back then i was like studying music - and they asked me wtf is that music who is this i said ahahaha xD
My grandfather by blood was a professional artist and sign painter who hung out with the outlaw bikers down here in Florida and he had a rooster fighting club called.the dirty peckers lol
If you care about literature .... or Coen Brothers... thats a line straight out of Cormac McCarthy.... No Country for Old Men ...or better still... the raw lyrical violence of Blood Meridian.. all set in the south.
The phrasing is amazing when I realize every mistake I think I hear, he purposefully places in the song, only proven by him repeating said rhythm, or phrase seemingly with ease. It seems as though his expression is that of dis-array or strife. This guy really has opened my eyes to this genre, and has expressed to me what it really means for him to play the Blues. Very nice.
thank you. your comment has just made me aware too that I listen deeply in awe to another blues player who sounds "off" in many parts of his playing, keeps repeating same "off notes" and I'm loving it though. Must be me comprehending his blues style. His music connecting with my soul and emotions. Authentic self taught style unpolished pure down to earth heartachy gutsy foot-tapping twangin with suffering, love, life and hope. thankyou Lord.🙏 Blues is so cool. 🖤💙🖤💙🖤
Well I wore my .44 so long, but it made my shoulder sore (2x) The woman I'm loving by the morning was no more Got up so mad this morning, I don't know where in the world to go (x2) The woman I'm loving by the morning was no more

@whemadre I would have posted a video of him playing instead of this psychadelic artsy crap if there was a video of him playing this song. I thought it would be good to at least have this bad ass song up on youtube. Feel free to post the video of him playing it.
@eldorado62 Roosevelt Sykes recorded it first in 1929 and he also added the lyrics. The song dates back to the early 20's though and was being played by many other artists.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But I think Howlin' Wolf did the original version & it was called ' .44 Blues'. No doubt, R.L.Burnside was one of the great Mississippi bluesmen.
Working in the florida swamps today at work. Waste deep in swamp with snakes and alligators. I'm cutting with my machete blasting this. It's a good day.
Thanks for posting the song! Don't care what the video is...I would like the song if the screen was blank!! I thought music was for the ears anyway!! Probably why I didn't like MTV either!! And yes...I am an old fart!! Now where is my kerosene record player!?!
hey it's been years and years that I'm looking forward to know who is the author of the picture (women dancing) from 1'39". it would be kind of you to help me. cheers, Gino
I don't know who took the picture..but I know where it was taken! That was at Junior Kimbrough's Juke Joint in Chulahoma,Ms. It was between Senatobia and Holly Springs,Ms. on Hwy 4..It was burned to the ground back in year 2000. They rebuilt Junior's Juke Joint #2 in Holly Springs,Ms. on Hwy 7. I grew up a few miles down the road (in a dry county) and my dad would always go there to by beer or whatever they were selling under the counter..lol..I went there as well when I was a teen and by a 40oz for someone to go in there and by me beer too..LOL! ;) You can see Junior in the background of that picture you are talking about! Hope this might help you,if you haven't found it already..I know it's been 4yrs since you wrote this comment.
I was going to comment how the guitar riff reminded me of Wolf's "Smokestack Lightening" but it appears that has been said, so I'll just add my "reminds me of it too".
This is the real deal guitar style from Africa. Just listen to Ali farka toure. I love real soul in my blues. We need more young artists to live poor and play happy. The only deference between rich and poor is satisfaction if they are satisfied with the way they sound hen the play they are rich in their soul. Don't let some producer lead you wrong they don't know shit about music.
if you can play both pieces on guitar (like me), then I guess your opinion is as valid as mine, and we'll just have do disagree if you can't play them, then perhaps other guitarists on here can say their opinion - the hook is all over this such that I think many casual listeners would misidentify it if asked to compare with the 2 Howlin Wolf songs, without picking out the lyrics
I don't know if you actually read what I wrote, but it doesn't use the word 'wrong'. The hook played here is closer to smokestack lightning than 44, so if anyone without the depth of knowledge of Blues is looking for the tab they might want to know this I don't think anything is 'wrong'. I think the music is very good, but if someone mashes things together, lyrics and hooks and rhythms, I don't think it wrong of me to point out the lyrics from 44 are mixed with playing closer to smokestack lightning someone looking for tab to learn this might understand my point
well they are thinking of skinny girl boy like justin bieber music, of course those kind of popularity have an expiration date that comes as soon as they find another new one
No one can ever replace RL miss you everyday
If you don't listen to R L Burnside. You are not living.
Imagine....I discovered him only today.... im 45 years old. Just been born my brothers !
I just started too live.
neoaureus - it’s never too late to discover awesome music...RIP Mr Burnside your music lives 4ever.
After 34 years of living on this Earth, I've just realized that lesson. Love his sound.
fact! i myself pushed him very much, so that people would hear about him - back then i was like studying music - and they asked me wtf is that music who is this i said ahahaha xD
How many great grandsons can look back at their great granddaddy and say Damn!! he was a BadAss!!
My grandfather by blood was a professional artist and sign painter who hung out with the outlaw bikers down here in Florida and he had a rooster fighting club called.the dirty peckers lol
This is music, this is life! What a treasure!
Hè is above all the commercial drama . . . and, all that.
R.L. = Majesty .. .
This is one catchy tune! Once you start listening to it, it is hard to stop.
I've listened to it about 4 or 5 times in a row already.
I put it on repeat and listen to it all day long.
he is up in heaven sittin down.. bless his soul
Don't think so..laying low in the grave
The video is good. Love the stills! Burnside was self-effacing. And didn't care one whit about what others thought. Just did his own thing.
"I didn't mean to kill nobody. I just meant to shoot the sonofabitch in the head and two times in the chest. Him dying was between him and the Lord."
Such a savage
Seems legit. That cat just had bad luck is all, little piece of metal ain't the problem, it was god that killed him.
I think I'll use that defence when I off someone
If you care about literature .... or Coen Brothers... thats a line straight out of Cormac McCarthy.... No Country for Old Men ...or better still... the raw lyrical violence of Blood Meridian.. all set in the south.
@@neoaureus Its a direct lift, or in the spirit of...?
That is killer

Burnside you are fantastic ! See ya in heaven.
It didn't matter what guitar you handed him to play...and his soul played it

Great song. Burnside was way underrated.

Sensacional
If you dont love this somethin wrong with you.
Exactly.... Some ppl don' feel SH*T !
@whemadre He put photos of the man, for crying out loud, I've seen other posters upload weird themes unrelated to the subject.
is it just me ore is the main riff kinda like smokestack lightnin ? , anyways love the guy !
coming along w/rl
Excelente.
RL was influenced by a lot of great musicians. The main riff sounds like Smokestack Lightning by Howlin Wolf. It really is great regardless.
He preceded howlin wolf
No the fucking he didn't.
Bull....
Sho love both mine.
Love it
@whemadre I didn't see any psychadelic artsy crap.
nice groove
great way to start the day!
That's NMHM North Mississippi Hill MUSIC folks
Copies delta blues but played it their way
love it..
Didn't Burnside once shoot a man dead with a 44?
Boomboom! Great shot!
He may have been part the bridge 'tween delta and Chicago styles
DAMN OHHH YEAAAA
as much as I like this, for anyone who doesn't know, the guitar is really playing something closer to Smokestack Lightning than 44

someone looking for tab to learn this might understand my point
Hoopazero No doubt about it.
+Hoopazero
Hell man, you just play something and sing something.
It'll go or it won't.
This goes!
LOL
hell, I'm a drummer and I can hear it... definitely a Smokestack Lightning -esque hook to it... but almost like its played note for note in reverse...
@TheTibbert thanx
One soul , ten fingers
@diagreen yeah... It is.....E blues
If the song's called "44 Pistol," why does the video start with a revolver?
this song just works
Who tf is on the drums? Never heard anything with timing like that. Perplexed
His grandson
muito bom!
genio
I think it's funny when I hear kids talking
about 30 is too old to be in the music business.
well they are thinking of skinny girl boy like justin bieber music, of course those kind of popularity have an expiration date that comes as soon as they find another new one
Tell that shit to BB, he played almost till the day he died. Age did not weary him!
BANG!
great guy good song

big boss man
rather 'meet me in the bottom'
I was talking about the singer
Burnside
Remake of howlin wolf is justice
anybody know how to play this song? I can almost get it in open G but there's a few little notes I can't figure out
The main riff reminds me of Honey bee of MuddyWaters.
