  • Color Q&A with Dr. Chris Bai - ∆e, backlight type, why hardware calibration is better & metamerism. In this video, we'll cover a range of topics in color management to answer the following questions:
    1. When I calibrate multiple displays, all have an ∆e of less than 2, but the color does not match; why is this happening? We'll also touch on Palette Master Ultimate display cloning and why this is a phenomenon feature when trying to match multiple displays.
    2. How to choose the backlight type for your display and why hardware calibrated display is much better than software calibrated one in these situation.
    3. Metamerism, color perception under varying lighting conditions, along with a quick overview of how each of us perceived color differently.
    And few other bits here and there about color management. Enjoy!

    Thank you for the video, very informative. Just to a better understanding: metamerism is the good guy, the one that allows us to match screens and prints. Metameric failure is the bad guy 🖖🏾

      @ArtIsRight  8 месяцев назад +1

      Metamerism is not necessarily good or bad; it is what describes color perception in a wide variety of scenarios

       @ArtIsRight Art, you're right (no pun intended) :).
      Mine was just a way to provide another perspective on a technical-terminology matter. As reported on wiki, which btw is mostly well maintained on about color science: "In colorimetry, metamerism is a perceived matching of colors with different (nonmatching) spectral power distributions. Colors that match this way are called metamers".
      So if we wanna better describe when this phenomena, fundamental for colorimetry thus for color management, doesn't happen - maybe is better to use the more precise terminology: "metameric failure".
      - Equal stimulus with equal activations: isomers;
      - Different stimulus with different activations: non metamers;
      - Different stimulus with similar activations: paramers;
      - Different stimulus with same activations: metamers.
      But hey, let’s not split hairs here, you’re doing a great service to the community and really thank you for pushing it forward.

      @@ArtIsRight Ive actually called BenQ back in the days when I got my SW2700pt and ask them about the LCD panel... When they haven't been able to specify it I tought myself how unprofessional it was for benq to put out hardware calibrated display, but not being able to tell me those things. This video makes a lot of sense... It took me "only" 7 years to find out why thay couldn't answer my question 🤣

    Hi, I have a question and that is I have an Asus Proart 279CRV connected to my Macbook Pro M1. Now I'm thinking about buying a Benq SW240 as a reference monitor for color grading. Is there any way to connect the Asus monitor and the Benq to the Macbook at the same time so that both monitors still display accurate colors and can be calibrated without problems?

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  8 месяцев назад

      Just connect them independently to the laptop and calibrate them independently.

    Gyts can anybody suggest me why Windows 10 does not show 10 bit color on my computer?
    I have Apple Mac Pro 2013 and monitor Nec Pa 272w connected via dp. I have test 10 bit image.
    On Mac Os this tast image shows that i have 10 bit.
    While when i switch to Windows 10 i hve only 8 bit.
    In Windows all possible sethings are set to 10 bit and monitor it self say it is reciving 10 bit signal. But the picture according to test image is 8 bit color. What is wrong?

      When you say all possible settings in Windows, are you using a Studio Driver for Nvidia or AMD Pro Driver for AMD? Reply in a new thread please I don't see responses and will not likely follow up reply, or you can dm me as well

    PMU does not always change ICC profiles after switching System/calibration settings via hotkey (WIN10). I would be interested to know if I'm the only one who occasionally doesn't always change the ICC profile in the system settings after a certain amount of work and then when switching with the hotkey. I wrote the error message to German support. They are very friendly but after about 10 E-Mails they don't really get any step further .

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  8 месяцев назад

      Are you referring to the custom icc that you just generated with PMU. Also is your puck set to change slot 1, 2 and 3 to calibration 1, 2 and 3 respectively?

    • @FDunst-xj8rn
      @FDunst-xj8rn 8 месяцев назад

      Thx for your answer. yes, the ICC was generated with PMU.
      Yes the puck is set to change 1, 2 and 3.
      But I just set slot 2 and 3. Number 1 is not set.

    ask BenQ why in PMU they do not supply .EDR files for specifically for their panels instead shipping something from X-Rite that was measured like a decade ago and comes with X-Rite SDK ? for example PMU uses "RGBLEDFamily_07Feb11.edr" for my SW270C ( the same file used in X-Rite SDK since 2011 ) .... I have to procure proper spectral measurements for BenQ panel actually used in SW270C elsewhere and replace them inside that .EDR ... come on

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  8 месяцев назад

      No other display company does this either.

    • @oktait
      @oktait 8 месяцев назад

      @@ArtIsRight but of course - BenQ has the data, but does not strive to distinguish themselves positively ... now if you use the actual spectral data and non BenQ software ( argyll cms ) to verify the results of BenQ calibration/profiling with the same colormeter but with way more patches and actually checking multiple patches close to min luminosity you will see how bad it is, but no complaints... BenQ monitors are cheap for a reason ... still using the proper spectral data (.EDR files) will result in better outcome with PMU...
