  • This wasn't a perfect conversation. It was awkward, tough, challenging. But it was a start - and that's not a bad thing! Over the last year, we have started having difficult conversations about race with people we haven't seen for years - but we have them bc they want to support us and understand. So Diane de Boer-Phelan and I put ourselves out there - after not having spoken for a few years bc life took me to the west coast - and we decided to begin to have a much needed conversation about the strained relationship between Black Americans and Asian Americans and colonialism planted seeds of mistrust that keep us from truly supporting each other. It's awkward - the convo won't be linear - and you might say the wrong thing. That's ok. That. Is. Ok. It's part of the work.
This is just the beginning. And we are much stronger together than apart.
