    It’s amazing how Frankfurt can build T3 with ease even with all those problems, while Berlin’s airport (alongside Stuttgart main station of course) remain as an embarrassment 😂

      Perhaps inform yourself, stuttgart 21 is not just a main station but a massive network of new tunnels, bridges, roads, new stations that connects the city and the region with the airport and Berlin is the epitome of anti-german socialists who fuck everything up.

      BER was led and observed by state-run or state-funded companies. Same thing with the train station. Fraport is mostly private. Private corporations can't afford cost overruns as they'd have to declare bankruptcy whereas the government can use taxpayers money at ease.

      With ease? I see where you're coming from, but the planning, the pre-construction and the process of building is certainly not easy 😅
      I don't deny that BER project failed for many years, but don't forget, BER was a whole airport and was meant to replace an other international airport and not "only" an extra terminal. If i remember correctly, even the switch from Istanbul Atatürk to New Istanbul Airport was quicker and done better.

      ​@@k.r.99 mate, a new airport and a new terminal fli FRA T3 are basically the same thing in terms of construction complexity. It's the buildings, their technical equipment and the logistics Systems that drive the complexity, not the runway. The only exception being ramping up ATC. It is most definitely up to the professionalism of the project management team, and I fully agree that public companies have a significantly worse track record there.
      Source: worked for a government customer for 4 years and now run the ramp-up of a large logistics facility in a private company.

      It might be a rumour but at some point of building BER I heard they wanted to hire Fraport to finish it, but they declined. Also, there was that joke that it would have been cheaper to deconstruct the city of Berlin and rebuild it next to a functioning airport 🙂

    I often use this airport when flying anywhere in Europe and it just always amazes me how big it is. I always get over 10k steps in with hardly trying 😂

    The reason why I like this channel is the fact that they don't afraid to upload videos under 15min length.
    Really some topics like this doesn't need long video, every important details said in this video and that's it, some channels make 50min videos on topics that can be described in 5min.
    Also this channel doesn't have clickbait covers or headlines.

    I have been in Terminals 2 and 1 in 2018 and 19 respectively. Terminal 2 was simple to navigate through while Terminal 1 was like walking through a corn maze.

      Terminal 1 itself with its concourses A, A plus, B and C would be defined as two or even four terminals at most other airports.

    Fraport assumed the control of my city airport (Fortaleza, in Brazil) and in a few years the airport has doubled its size. It's impressive how they know how to make an airport work and grow.

    The storytelling in this piece is great. As someone who frequently passes through FRA, I can't help but wonder how Frankfurt will manage to fill the 81,000 new vacancies. The customer journey through Frankfurt can be painfully slow, with most of the issues occurring at security and baggage. I hope that they are actively working on finding a solution to these problems and making the experience smoother for travellers. Nevertheless, I look forward to experiencing the new terminal in 2026!

      It isn't 81,000 new vacancies; They're currently employing 81,000 people and terminal 3 will add a couple of thousand new jobs likely ending up at around 100,000ish once terminal 2 has been renovated. So "only" 19,000 new vacancies.

    It ought to be mentioned that Frankfurt (am Main) actually has two railway stations: one for local trains, and one for long-distance trains. The latter are mostly high-speed trains that whisk you all around Germany and further into Europe. It's a remarkably smoth ride at 300 km/h from Frankfurt to Cologne.

    I remember 25 years ago, we often drove to the airport and went to the visitors platform and I watched the planes land and take off. You could see the US base and the C5 Galaxys over there. Thats where they build the new terminal. Frankfurt might be ugly, but they get their stuff done.

    Frankfurt is totally amazing compared to the UK, when one considers it's not even the capital city - Berlin. Manchester is the only airport outside of London that is undergoing any significant expansion - and unfortunately, it has gone for the low-cost 'Lidl look' on the outside. 68 million people are forced through Heathrow and Gatwick with only Manchester taking up some of the slack in the north. In the UK, everything revolves around London.

      Germany is far more polycentric than the UK. While Berlin has approx. 3 million more inhabitants than Frankfurt (800000 vs. 3.8 million), the Frankfurt-Rhein-Main metropolitan area is actually more populous than Berlin. You step 3 meters outside of Berlin: cow pastures. You cross the Frankfurt city limits, you enter another city with 100000 or more people.

      It--like most-any of the larger airports world-wide--is a failure from the perspective of user-friendliness.
      It is instead a testament to how ridiculously far people are forced to walk. Just so that more planes can be served simultaneously.
      On the other hand, removing ALL forms of powered people-movers would force people to actually WALK, thus subjecting them to a form of diet. Which would be a GoodThing in countries with a high obesity-rate...

    It kind of reminds me of Berlin's Brandenburg Airport from a design perspective. Im also surprised that they didnt add more to it for public transit or higher order transit. If they keep growing one would think that they would need it as a capacity issue.

    Very good video with much information. One thing, that is MAYBE happening, is that the Terminal 3 is getting its own Train station for the Frankfurt S-Bahn. It's not entirely sure when that will happen, but maybe 2026 (when Terminal 3 will go into full service) or 2030. Just wanted to add that.

      Actually it will happen. The Bundesverkehrswegeplan 2030 contains a regional train station for the S7 and the regional trains to Mannheim through the Riedbahn

      @@xfel5913 No. They're bulding the train station at the same time as the terminal but the terminal will be finished sooner than the train station because the train station is supposed to start service in 2030.

    The passenger numbers for 2023 looks like they will be around 60 million and therefore it will likely only be another year to get back to pre-Covid numbers.

    Portland, Oregon, USA airport PDX has always been one of the top rated airports in the USA. I see many elements in this airport that are in PDX. Having the departures on top and the arrivals below is a smart layout and makes for better movement. It also has a lot of local restaurants & stores in each terminal, which makes waiting for your flight much more enjoyable.

      This arrangement of arrivals and departures and the other infrastructure can already be found in Terminals 1 and 2 of the airport, even though they are already decades old. This has absolutely proved its worth. I think planners around the world recognize the advantages and disadvantages of certain building forms and when you have as little space available as Frankfurt - the population around it is very dense - you have to save space and therefore you build both upwards and downwards. Maybe I'll have the pleasure of flying to Portland one day. Then I will remember your words

      ​@@AL5520 Terminal 1 in Frankfurt opened in 1972 and offered split levels for departures and arrivals from.the very beginning.
      And the new terminal got its own train station underneath, nowadays the regional train station. Whereas the later built station for longhaul and highspeed trains is situated in a gap between two highways, 200 m away.

    The last part to be completed will be the new S-Bahn train station for this terminal. Deutsche Bahn has a reputation for beeing extremely slow in construction projects, even for German standards. In the far future there will be the train station for long distance ICEs with four tracks and an S-Bahn staion with three tracks north of the airport and new S-Bahn station with probably 2 tracks in the south to serve the new terminal and connect it directly to Frankfurt main station.

    It should be noted that T3 will will not only add capacity to the Airport, but will first replace T2 as they carry out extensive renovations in T2. T1 and T2 will then merge to serve Star Alliance flights, with T3 becoming the main Terminal for other airlines. Cheers!

      @@Bubbirock Sorry, but he ist rigth. Fraport stated that they want to modernize T2 because of Age and because they have a lot of problems there in terms of efficiency and processes.

      ​@@immermitderruheyeah theyre renovating many areas of terminal 1 right now. I don't think it would be possible to close it due to the sheer number of flights it handles. Terminal 2 is very small in comparison.

    FRA airport layout is a MESS comparing to MUC airport.
    However, the FRA airport city is great ,there are a lot of good shop and facilities in their. Moreover, the ATC service over FRA is great ,those hard working ATC people can handle large amount of plane with professional way .I suggest LHR ATC shall pay a visit to FRA ATC tower.

    It looks like a beautiful terminal, but it’s a shame it is built on the opposite side of the airport. It would have been so nicer if it would have been built in line with terminal 1 and 2. And replace the cargo section and the fuel depots to the opposite side of the airport. More logical and convenient for passengers, public transport, taxis and supply for airport shops and restaurants. Missed opportunity if you ask me.

    It will be a wonderful addition to FRAPORT. I'm hoping that it will eliminate the need for those awful "remote gates" where you freeze or roast while getting on/off your flight and then have to board a bus to get to/from the terminal. If anyone has any info on this, please let me know. Cheers.

      I was on an airport tour 2 weeks ago, the guide explained some details while we were driving by in the tour bus:
      The G-Gate area is internally often jokingly described as G-günstig (cheap) because it was designed in coorperation with low cost airlines (don't qoute me on it but I think Ryanair). It will feature no jet ways and limited amenities, the planes will park at the gate and you will have to get down to ground level, walk to your plane and get on. This is to keep cost very low for the airlines.
      Areas H and J will feature jet ways and are closer related to terminal 1 in terms on amenities.
      Also when Terminal 3 is open, they will close Terminal 2 for a few years to completely overhaul it.
      The guide also made a joke that what Berlin calls the "BER Mega Airport" and "International Hub", they call "Terminal 3". The whole bus laughed
      Then something I read in a random new article:
      The airport proposed to connect Terminal 3 via a completely new train station if they were financially supported for it, the government didn't support it, so now they just run the Sky Line in between the "old" train station (only built in the late 90s) and the new terminal.
      But anyway I guess we wouldn't have gotten something like Frankfurt am Main Flughafen Fernbahnhof (long distance), but instead something more like the Regionalbahnhof for S-Bahn trains

      When did they start calling it FRAPORT? Seems like they should be more true to their german culture, Is sticking to the old name, "Flughafen Frankfurt am Main." Why the English-based acronym?

    still hard for me to understand that the airport is almost twice the size of Heathrow (2160 vs 1227 ha) and has four runways, but Heathrow is still moving more passengers (66 vs 49 millions per year).

      Since when does the size of an area have anything to do with the number of passengers arriving at an airport? Frankfurt is the final destination for very few passengers, but rather an airport for transit passengers. London, on the other hand, will be the final destination for most people, because London is a major city in the whole world. Besides, Frankfurt only has around 700,000 inhabitants and London has how many? That's right, just under 9 million. If you assess this correctly, the answer is self-evident. You can't compare apples with pears

      Heathrow serves whole UK, while in Germany there are three to four airports with international traffic (Frankfurt, Munic, Berlin and Hamburg and some smaller ones). So Fraport has not the traffic of Heathrow. Logical.

    This all just makes me sad. I was stationed at Rhein Main Air Base In the nineties, Before we had to move to ramstein.
    That base had a lot of history especially with the berlin airlift.
    I understand the germans need to expand but it was still sad to see.

      @@patrickp.1001 BER Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt it's a major project which took way way to long to complete. But it was the Biggest known Airport Expansion in cost I ever seen so far with over $7BN in costs.

    My company is providing the rolling stock for the new Sky Line people mover. Just recently the first cars have been tested.
    I however will probably not use T3 anytime soon, as I am mostly flying Lufthansa/Star Alliance and they will stay in Terminal 1 and will also occupy a then joint Terminal 2 after renovation.

    Surely there is a maximum capability for any airport which depends on the number of flights that it can cope with and the size of aircraft which governs the number of passengers carried which itself depends on how many wish to fly and where they wish to fly to. Hence the number of passengers this new airport I can cope with has nothing to do with its size. It ma just be a very costly white elephant!

      What a great statement. Neither of these are airports that have existed for more than 70 years and have had to be adapted time and again to changing circumstances. They were built on a greenfield site or in the sand without having to pay attention to nature, people or anything else. So in future, switch on your brain - if you have one - before you say something so stupid.

    So, if done on schedule, construction will have taken 11 years. What an example of German efficiency. For reference, building Terminal 5 at Heathrow, which is far larger, took 6 years.

    To be honest , Frankfurt is so big already I refuse to fly to it at the moment , the changing time was 1 hour and it took his 45 mins to get to the damn get from where we landed and that was when we had assistance. It is absolutely humungous. Dont bother unless you have at least 3 hours especially if you are from the UK as we are not in the EU anymore!

      Come on, be realistic. Regardless of the fact that you Brits now have to go through the checks for third countries, I would never, not even at a regional airport, allow for a transfer time of less than 90 minutes. I once had a transfer time of 70 minutes in Zurich and the airport is manageable and I and a whole bunch of other passengers ran through the terminals like idiots to catch our connecting flight.
